Abstract

Oligothiophenes are pi-conjugated semiconducting and fluorescent molecules whose self-assembly properties are widely investigated for application in organic electronics, optoelectronics, biophotonics and sensing. We report here an approach to the preparation of crystalline oli-gothiophene nano/micro-fibers based on the use of a sulfur overrich quaterthiophene building block, -T4S4-, containing in its covalent network all the information needed to promote the di-rectional, pi-pi stacking driven, self-assembly of Ar-T4S4-Ar oligomers into fibers with hierar-chical supramolecular arrangement from nano- to microscale. We show that when Ar varies from unsubstituted thiophene to thiophene substituted with electron withdrawing groups, a wide redistribution of the molecular electronic charge takes place without substantially affecting the aggregation modalities of the oligomer. In this way a structurally comparable series of fibers is obtained having progressively varying optical properties, redox potentials, photoconductivity and type of prevailing charge carriers (from p- to n-type). A thorough characterization of the fi-bers based on SEM, CD, CV, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and PL spectroscopies, photoconductivi-ty and KPFM measurements is reported. With the aid of DFT calculations, combined with X-ray data, a model accounting for the growth of the fibers from molecular to nano- and microscale is proposed. We believe that the simple strategy outlined in this study allows to establish a straightforward correlation between the molecular structure of the components and the function-al properties of the corresponding self-assembled nano/micro-fibers.

Abstract

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial process in various energy conversion and storage technologies, such as water electrolysis. Developing efficient and cost‐effective electrocatalysts is essential to achieve the commercialization of devices for the transition toward sustainable energy solutions. Herein, ternary layer double hydroxides (LDHs) are synthesized and characterized as electrocatalysts for OER using a potentiodynamic electrochemical deposition method on Grafoil. A chemometric approach based on experimental design is employed to rationalize the effort in the investigation of the LDHs which are based on Ni, Co, and Fe. The deposited films are characterized using cyclic voltammetry and X‐ray diffraction to determine peak currents and potentials, and crystal size. Furthermore, the electrocatalyst performances are assessed by linear sweep voltammetry in 1M KOH from which the Tafel slope and onset potential are calculated. The obtained data are used to derive models describing the material properties and electrocatalyst performance as a function of the electrolyte composition used during the LDHs electrodeposition. This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between the electrocatalyst composition and its OER activity, enabling the design of more efficient and sustainable electrochemical systems for energy applications. Abstract

PEA 46 is a biobased polymer with promising properties for sustainable packaging applications, which can be obtained via polymerization of a furan 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) derivative and a diol monomer containing internal amide bonds (46 amido diol). In the literature, PEA 46 showed a complex series of thermal transitions during DSC scans. For this reason, in this initial exploratory study PEA 46 was subjected to compression molding and the melting behavior of film samples was investigated with parallel DSC and WAXS analyses. At room temperature, a mesomorph phase was the only one observed. Subjecting the samples to heating scans led to the formation of phase α, caused by a sequence of partially overlapping melting and recrystallization phenomena. An additional melting and recrystallization phenomenon resulted in the development of a phase β, which melted at approximately 173 °C, the temperature after which the material was completely amorphous and isotropic. Phase α could be enhanced via thermal annealing, whereas phase β could be enhanced via a melt crystallization treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the present study, bio-based polymeric blends have been prepared for applications in the field of sustainable food packaging, starting from two furan-based homopolymers, poly(hexamethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PHF) and poly(pentamethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PPeF). PHF and PPeF were synthesized by two-step melt polycondensation—a solvent-free synthetic strategy—and then binary physical mixtures, PHF/PPeF, with different weight compositions were prepared by dissolution in a common solvent. The blends were processed into compression-moulded films, and molecular, morphological, structural, thermal, and mechanical characterizations were subsequently carried out. Blending did not negatively affect the thermal stability of the parent homopolymers, and good compatibility between them was observed. This strategy also allowed for the modulation of the chain rigidity as well as of the crystallinity, simply by acting on the relative weight amount of the homopolymers. From a mechanical point of view, the presence of PPeF led to a reduction in stiffness and an increase in the elongation at break, obtaining materials with an elastomeric behaviour. Evaluation of the gas barrier properties confirmed that the good barrier properties of PHF were preserved by blending. Finally, lab-scale composting tests confirmed a greater weight loss of the mixtures with respect to the PHF homopolymer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
