In the quest for new energy sources, the research on controlled thermonuclear fusion has been boosted by the start of the construction phase of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). ITER is based on the tokamak magnetic configuration, which is the best performing one in terms of energy confinement. Alternative concepts are however actively researched, which in the long term could be considered for a second generation of reactors. Here, we show results concerning one of these configurations, the reversed-field pinch (RFP). By increasing the plasma current, a spontaneous transition to a helical equilibrium occurs, with a change of magnetic topology. Partially conserved magnetic flux surfaces emerge within residual magnetic chaos, resulting in the onset of a transport barrier. This is a structural change and sheds new light on the potential of the RFP as the basis for a low-magnetic-field ohmic fusion reactor. © 2009 Macmillan Publishers Limited.

- Abstract
This paper reports the highlights of the RFX-mod fusion science programme since the last 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The RFX-mod fusion science programme focused on two main goals: exploring the fusion potential of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration and contributing to the solution of key science and technology problems in the roadmap to ITER. Active control of several plasma parameters has been a key tool in this endeavour. New upgrades on the system for active control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability are underway and will be presented in this paper. Unique among the existing fusion devices, RFX-mod has been operated both as an RFP and as a tokamak. The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q(edge) < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Strong interaction has continued with the stellarator community in particular on the physics of helical states and on three-dimensional codes.

- Abstract
This paper summarizes the main achievements of the RFX fusion science program in the period between the 2008 and 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conferences. RFX-mod is the largest reversed field pinch in the world, equipped with a system of 192 coils for active control of MHD stability. The discovery and understanding of helical states with electron internal transport barriers and core electron temperature >1.5 keV significantly advances the perspectives of the configuration. Optimized experiments with plasma current up to 1.8 MA have been realized, confirming positive scaling. The first evidence of edge transport barriers is presented. Progress has been made also in the control of first-wall properties and of density profiles, with initial first-wall lithization experiments. Micro-turbulence mechanisms such as ion temperature gradient and micro-tearing are discussed in the framework of understanding gradient-driven transport in low magnetic chaos helical regimes. Both tearing mode and resistive wall mode active control have been optimized and experimental data have been used to benchmark numerical codes. The RFX programme also provides important results for the fusion community and in particular for tokamaks and stellarators on feedback control of MHD stability and on three-dimensional physics. On the latter topic, the result of the application of stellarator codes to describe three-dimensional reversed field pinch physics will be presented. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

- Abstract
An interesting result of magnetic chaos reduction in RFX-mod high current discharges is the development of strong electron transport barriers. An internal heat and particle transport barrier is formed when a bifurcation process changes the magnetic configuration into a helical equilibrium and chaos reduction follows, together with the formation of a null in the q shear. Strong temperature gradients develop, corresponding to a decreased thermal and particle transport. Turbulence analysis shows that the large electron temperature gradients are limited by the onset of micro-tearing modes, in addition to residual magnetic chaos. A new type of electron transport barrier with strong temperature gradients develops more externally (r/a = 0.8) accompanied by a 30% improvement of the global confinement time. The mechanism responsible for the formation of such a barrier is still unknown but it is likely associated with a local reduction of magnetic chaos. These external barriers develop primarily in situations of well-conditioned walls so that they might be regarded as attempts towards an L-H transition. Both types of barriers occur in high-current low-collisionality regimes. Analogies with tokamak and stellarators are discussed. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

- Abstract
The full three-dimensional (3D) approach is now becoming an important issue for all magnetic confinement configurations. It is a necessary condition for the stellarator but also the tokamak and the reversed field pinch (RFP) now cannot be completely described in an axisymmetric framework. For the RFP the observation of self-sustained helical configurations with improved plasma performances require a better description in order to assess a new view on this configuration. In this new framework plasma configuration studies for RFX-mod have been considered both with tools developed for the RFP as well as considering codes originally developed for the stellarator and adapted to the RFP. These helical states are reached through a transition to a very low/reversed shear configuration leading to internal electron transport barriers. These states are interrupted by MHD reconnection events and the large Te gradients at the barriers indicate that both current and pressure driven modes are to be considered. Furthermore the typically flat Te profiles in the helical core have raised the issue of the role of electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence in these reduced chaos regions, so that a stability analysis in the correct 3D geometry is required to address an optimization of the plasma setup. In this viewtheVMECcode proved to be an effectiveway to obtain helical equilibria to be studied in terms of stability and transport with a suite of well tested codes. In this work, the equilibrium reconstruction technique as well as the experimental evidence of 3D effects and their first interpretation in terms of stability and transport are presented using both RFP and stellarator tools. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

- Abstract
A source for the production of low-power plasmas at atmospheric pressure, to be used for the nondamaging sterilization of living tissues, is presented. The source, powered by radiofrequency and working with a helium flow, has a specific configuration, studied to prevent the formation of electric arcs dangerous to living matter. It is capable of killing different types of bacteria with a decimal reduction time of 1-2 min; on the contrary, human cells such as conjunctival fibroblasts were found to be almost unharmed by the plasma. A high concentration of OH radicals, likely to be the origin of the sterilizing effect, is detected through their UV emission lines. The effect of the UV and the OH radicals on the fibroblasts was analysed and no significant effects were detected.

- Abstract
The reversed field pinch (RFP) is a magnetic configuration alternative to the tokamak that can be considered for a second generation of reactors. In this paper new remarkable results obtained in the RFP experiment RFX-mod are presented, showing that an internal transport barrier delimitates a large fraction of the plasma volume in a RFP when the current is raised to ∼1.5 MA. The formation of this transport barrier is related to a profound, spontaneous modification of the magnetic topology. Due to the occurrence of a saddle node bifurcation the plasma enters in the single helical axis state, which is theoretically known to be more resilient to chaos. This bifurcation is driven by the amplitude of the helical perturbation which dominates the mode spectrum. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

- Abstract
With the exploration of the MA plasma current regime in up to 0.5 s long discharges, RFX-mod has opened new and very promising perspectives for the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration, and has made significant progress in understanding and improving confinement and in controlling plasma stability. A big leap with respect to previous knowledge and expectations on RFP physics and performance has been made by RFX-mod since the last 2006 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. A new self-organized helical equilibrium has been experimentally achieved (the Single Helical Axis - SHAx - state), which is the preferred state at high current. Strong core electron transport barriers characterize this regime, with electron temperature gradients comparable to those achieved in tokamaks, and by a factor of 4 improvement in confinement time with respect to the standard RFP. RFX-mod is also providing leading edge results on real-time feedback control of MHD instabilities, of general interest for the fusion community. © 2009 IAEA, Vienna.

- Abstract
The reversed field pinch configuration is characterized by the presence of magnetic structures both in the core and at the edge: in the core, at high plasma current the spontaneous development of a helical structure is accompanied by the appearance of internal electron transport barriers; at the edge strong pressure gradients, identifying an edge transport barrier, are observed too, related to the position of the field reversal surface. The aim of this paper is the experimental characterization of both the internal and edge transport barriers in relation to the magnetic topology, discussing possible analogies and differences with other confinement schemes. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

- Abstract
Optimization of machine operation, including plasma position control, density control and especially feedback control on multiple magnetohydrodynamic modes, has led RFX-mod to operate reliably at 1.5 MA, the highest current ever achieved on a reversed field pinch (RFP). At high current and low density the magnetic topology spontaneously self-organizes in an Ohmical helical symmetry, with the new magnetic axis helically twisting around the geometrical axis of the torus. The separatrix of the island disappears leaving a wide and symmetric thermal structure with large gradients in the electron temperature profile. The new topology still displays an intermittent nature but its overall presence has reached 85% of the current flat-top period. The large gradients in the electron temperature profile appear to be marginal for the destabilization of ion temperature gradient modes on the assumption that ions and electrons have the same gradients. There are indications that higher currents could provide the conditions under which to prove the existence of a true helical equilibrium as the standard RFP configuration. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

- Abstract
RFX-mod is a reversed field pinch (RFP) experiment equipped with a system that actively controls the magnetic boundary. In this paper we describe the results of a new control algorithm, the clean mode control (CMC), in which the aliasing of the sideband harmonics generated by the discrete saddle coils is corrected in real time. CMC operation leads to a smoother (i.e. more axisymmetric) boundary. Tearing modes rotate (up to 100 Hz) and partially unlock. Plasma-wall interaction diminishes due to a decrease of the non-axisymmetric shift of the plasma column. With the ameliorated boundary control, plasma current has been successfully increased to 1.5 MA, the highest for an RFP. In such regimes, the magnetic dynamics is dominated by the innermost resonant mode, the internal magnetic field gets close to a pure helix and confinement improves. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

- Abstract
ITER design requires delivering to the plasma a total power of 33 MW up to one hour in a stationary condition by two heating neutral beam injectors (HNB). This level of power is provided by negative ion beams generated by an RF source and accelerated at 1 MeV. The HNB specifications have never been simultaneously achieved so far and therefore a neutral beam test facility is being constructed at Consorzio RFX in Padova, Italy, to demonstrate the feasibility of a prototype injector and to optimize its performances. The facility will host two experimental devices: SPIDER, a 100 kV negative hydrogen/deuterium RF source, full size prototype of the HNB source, and MITICA, a prototype of the full HNB. The mission of SPIDER and MITICA is to guarantee reliable and efficient operation of HNB on ITER, where it will be impossible to have a direct view of the plasma in the source and of the beam in the injector, but a much reduced set of diagnostics will be available, mainly thermocouples. The diagnostics to be installed on SPIDER and MITICA are therefore essential to qualify and optimize the HNB for ITER in a full scale, full performance device, and to assess the amount of information on the source and beam which can be gathered by means of the HNB set of diagnostics. Sufficient instrumentation as then been included in each component to monitor its performance within the design envelope, to alert plant operators of the onset of operation outside design margins and to monitor source and beam characteristics to improve the injector performance. The suite of diagnostics for SPIDER, besides some systems dedicated also to the operation of pecific plants (electric measurements of power supplies, vacuum, cesium oven, cooling plant calorimetry of ion source and beam dump), is dedicated to characterize the plasma in the source and the beam. Thermocouples on heat exposed surfaces of the source and beam dump will characterize the distribution of the power load. The source will be investigated also with electrostatic probes, absorption spectroscopy for cesium density, cavity ring down spectroscopy for negative ion density, emission spectroscopy for electron temperature, density of electrons, negative ions, cesium, neutral hydrogen and to monitor the amount of impurities. The beam will be analyzed mainly in terms of uniformity and divergence: a short pulse calorimeter made of 1D CFC tiles and observed by IR cameras will provide a high resolution map of the beam intensity and thus its uniformity and divergence; it will be complemented by beam tomography and neutron imaging on the beam dump, both not limited to short pulses and the latter one only operational with deuterium. MITICA will have the same set of operational diagnostics, with a large number of thermocouples on the beamline components, including and exceeding those foreseen in the HNB. Source spectroscopy will use a reduced number of lines of sight. The beam will be investigated between beam line components with beam mission spectroscopy and tomography using narrow apertures on the cryopump backplane; and by neutron imaging installed on the beam dump. The paper will present the integrated set of diagnostics, their scope within the mission of the two experiments and their expected capabilities, based on the nearly finalized design.

- Abstract
The thermonuclear fusion experiment ITER requires a 33 MW auxiliary heating power from two Neutral Beam Injectors (HNB), each of them providing 40 A of negative deuterium ions. The EU activities oriented to the realisation of a negative ion electrostatic accelerator for the HNB comprise the construction in Padova of SPIDER, a test bed devoted to the optimisation of the beam source. The secondary particles which are generated inside the SPIDER accelerator are the subject of the present contribution.

- Abstract
Optical emission spectroscopy was used to characterize the plasma produced by DC and pulsed corona discharges in air at ambient pressure in a wire-cylinder reactor. The experiments have been performed both in dry and humid air and also in the presence of n-hexane, used in 500 ppm concentration as a model pollutant. The results provide a thorough characterization of different plasma regimes in terms of electron, vibrational and rotational temperature and are discussed with reference to chemical reactivity data.

The RFX reversed field pinch experiment has been modified (RFX-mod) to address specific issues of active control of MHD instabilities. A thin shell (tau(Bv)similar to 50 ms) has replaced the old thick one (tau(Bv)similar to 500 ms) and 192 (4 poloidal x 48 toroidal) independently powered saddle coils surround the thin shell forming a cage completely covering the torus. This paper reports the results obtained during the first year of operation. The system has been used with various control scenarios including experiments on local radial field cancellation over the entire torus surface to mimic an ideal wall ('virtual shell') and on single and multiple mode feedback control. Successful virtual shell operation has been achieved leading to: a 3-fold increase in pulse length and well controlled 300 ms pulses(similar to 6 shell times) up to similar to 1MA plasma current; one order of magnitude reduction of the dominant radial field perturbations at the plasma edge and correspondingly 100% increase in global energy confinement time. Robust feedback stabilization of resistive wall modes has been demonstrated in conditions where rotation does not play a role and multiple unstable modes are present.

The RFX device (Padova, Italy) has evolved in time from the passive control of the magnetic field configuration to the active control of both the field errors and the m=0 field harmonics. Encouraging results were obtained in terms of reduction of localized plasma-wall interaction and of induced rotation of MHD modes: on this basis the RFX load assembly has been recently modified, reducing by a factor of ten the time constant of the stabilizing shell and covering the whole plasma surface by a system of 192 saddle coils, each of them independently fed by a fast amplifier. Moreover, the new toroidal field power supply allows to produce robust m=0 rotating field harmonics, to drag the locked modes by non-linear coupling among different modes. These features realize the most powerful control system of plasma dynamics in any fusion device, with the best space resolution and the fastes response time. Specific real-time control technologies and software tools have been developed with the aim of offering a variety of control scenarios: driven rotation of MHD modes, controlled formation of Quasi-Single Helicity states, feedback stabilization of resistive wall modes, combinations of the above schemes. The work is supported by theoretical simulations of plasma response to the various control actions performed by the digital regulators and the fast amplifiers. The scientific programme to be pursued by means of these real-time control tools is considered to be highly relevant not only for Reverse Field Pinches, but also for Tokamaks, in particular when operating under advanced confinement scenarios.

The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q edge < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Strong interaction has continued with the stellarator community in particular on the physics of helical states and on three-dimensional codes., QC 20131028

- Abstract
The ITER heating neutral beam (HNB) injector, based on negative ions accelerated at 1 MV, will be tested and optimized in the SPIDER source and MITICA full injector prototypes, using a set of diagnostics not available on the ITER HNB. The RF source, where the H−/D− production is enhanced by cesium evaporation, will be monitored with thermocouples, electrostatic probes, optical emission spectroscopy, cavity ring down, and laser absorption spectroscopy. The beam is analyzed by cooling water calorimetry, a short pulse instrumented calorimeter, beam emission spectroscopy, visible tomography, and neutron imaging. Design of the diagnostic systems is presented.

On the latter topic, the result of the application of stellarator codes to describe three-dimensional reversed field pinch physics will be presented., QC 20111227

Analogies with tokamak and stellarators are discussed., QC 20111216

In this work, the equilibrium reconstruction technique as well as the experimental evidence of 3D effects and their first interpretation in terms of stability and transport are presented using both RFP and stellarator tools., QC 20111216

The aim of this paper is the experimental characterization of both the internal and edge transport barriers in relation to the magnetic topology, discussing possible analogies and differences with other confinement schemes., QC 20111216

A new self-organized helical equilibrium has been experimentally achieved ( the Single Helical Axis-SHAx-state), which is the preferred state at high current. Strong core electron transport barriers characterize this regime, with electron temperature gradients comparable to those achieved in tokamaks, and by a factor of 4 improvement in confinement time with respect to the standard RFP. RFX-mod is also providing leading edge results on real-time feedback control of MHD instabilities, of general interest for the fusion community., QC 20110413
