Abstract

This Deep-Sea Research II special issue is the third volume of scientific papers to emerge from the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2, Fig. 1). This diverse body of contemporary Indian Ocean research (some motivated by IIOE-2 and others not) includes papers on physical, chemical and biological oceanography, and covers trophic levels ranging from phytoplankton to whales. With this volume the IIOE-2 takes another important step toward achieving its overarching goal, which is to “… advance our understanding of interactions between geologic, oceanic and atmospheric processes that give rise to the complex physical dynamics of the Indian Ocean region, and determine how those dynamics affect climate, extreme events, marine biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems and human populations” (Hood et al., 2015).

Gaye (b) Keywords: Northern Indian Ocean; Particle flux; Calcium carbonate; Biogenic opal; Sediment traps; Temporal and spatial variability Abstract: Mass fluxes of diatom opal, planktonic foraminifera carbonate and coccolithophorid carbonate were measured with time-series sediment traps at six sites in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Equatorial Indian Ocean (EIOT). The above fluxes were related to regional variations in salinity, temperature and nutrient distribution. Annual fluxes of diatom opal range between 3 and 28gm.sup.-2 yr.sup.-1, while planktonic foraminifera carbonate fluxes range between 6 and 23gm.sup.-2 yr.sup.-1 and coccolithophorid carbonate fluxes range between 4 and 24gm.sup.-2 yr.sup.-1. Annual planktonic foraminifera carbonate to coccolithophorid carbonate ratios range between 0.8 and 2.2 and coccolithophorid carbonate to diatom opal ratios range between 0.5 and 3.3. In the western Arabian Sea, coccolithophorids are the major contributors to biogenic flux during periods of low nutrient concentrations. Coccolithophorid carbonate fluxes decrease and planktonic foraminiferal carbonate and diatom opal fluxes increase when nutrient-rich upwelled waters are advected over the trap site. In the oligotropic eastern Arabian Sea, coccolithophorid carbonate fluxes are high throughout the year. Planktonic foraminiferal carbonate fluxes are the major contributors to biogenic flux in the EIOT. In the northern and central Bay of Bengal, when surface salinity values drop sharply during the SW monsoon, there is a drastic reduction in planktonic foraminiferal carbonate fluxes, but coccolithophorid carbonate and diatom opal fluxes remain steady or continue to increase. Distinctly higher annual molar Si.sub.bio/C.sub.inorg (>1) and C.sub.org/C.sub.inorg (>1.5) ratios are observed in the northern and central Bay of Bengal mainly due to lower foraminiferal carbonate production as a result of sharp salinity variations. We can thus infer that the enhanced freshwater supply from rivers should increase oceanic CO.sub.2 uptake. Its silicate supply favours the production of diatoms while the salinity drop produces conditions unfavourable for most planktonic foraminifera species. Sedimentation in the ocean is fed by large aggregates produced in the surface mixed layer that sink rapidly through the water column. These particles sampled by sediment traps have often been proposed to interact by disaggregation and scavenging with a pool of fine suspended matter with very slow sinking velocities and thus a long residence time. We investigated the amino acid (AA) composition and stable nitrogen isotopic ratios of suspended matter (SPM) sampled during the late SW monsoon season in the Arabian Sea and compared them to those of sinking particles to understand organic matter degradation/modification during passage through the water column. We found that AA composition of mixed layer suspended matter corresponds more to fresh plankton and their aggregates, whereas AA composition of SPM in the sub-thermocline water column deviated progressively from mixed layer composition. We conclude that suspended matter in deep waters and in the mixed layers of oligotrophic stations is dominated by fine material that has a long residence time and organic matter that is resistant to degradation. SPM in areas of high primary productivity is essentially derived from fresh plankton and thus has a strong imprint of the subsurface nitrate source, whereas SPM at oligotrophic stations and at subthermocline depths appears to exchange amino acids and nitrogen isotopes with the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool influencing also the δ15N values.

Abstract

The Kara Sea is one of the arctic marginal seas strongly influenced by fresh water and river suspension. The highlyseasonal discharge by the two major rivers Yenisei and Ob induces seasonal changes in hydrography, sea surfacetemperature, ice cover, primary production and sedimentation. In order to obtain a seasonal pattern of sedimentation inthe Kara Sea, sediment traps were deployed near the river mouth of the Yenisei (Yen) as well as in the central Kara Sea(Kara) within the framework of the GermanRussian project Siberian River run-off; SIRRO. Two and a half years oftime-series flux data were obtained between September 2000 and April 2003 and were analyzed for bulk components,amino acids, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes as well as sterols and fatty acids.Sediment trap data show that much of the annual deposition occurred under ice cover, possibly enhanced byzooplanktonic activity and sediment resuspension. An early bloom of ice-associated algae in April/May occurred in thepolynya area and may have been very important to sustain the life cycles of higher organisms after the light limitation ofthe winter months due to no/low insolation and ice cover. The strong river input dominated the months JuneAugust inthe southern part of the Kara Sea. The central Kara Sea had a much shorter productive period starting in August and wasless affected by the river plumes. Despite different time-scales of sampling and trapping biases, total annual fluxes fromtraps were in the same order of magnitude as accumulation rates in surface sediments. Terrestrial organic carbonaccumulation decreased from 10.7 to 0.3 gCm 2 a 1 from the riverine source to the central Kara Sea. Parallel to this,preservation of marine organic matter decreased from 10% to 2% of primary productivity which was probably related todecreasing rates of sedimentation.

Abstract

We report the results of our investigations on the catchment area, surface sediments, and hydrology of the monsoonal Lonar Lake, central India. Our results indicate that the lake is currently stratified with an anoxic bottom layer, and there is a spatial heterogeneity in the sensitivity of sediment parameters to different environmental processes. In the shallow (0?5 m) near shore oxic-suboxic environments the lithogenic and terrestrial organic content is high and spatially variable, and the organics show degradation in the oxic part. Due to aerial exposure resulting from lake level changes of at least 3 m, the evaporitic carbonates are not completely preserved. In the deep water (> 5 m) anoxic environment the lithogenics are uniformly distributed and the ?13C is an indicator not only for aquatic vs. terrestrial plants but also of lake pH and salinity. The isotopic composition of the evaporites is dependent not only on the isotopic composition of source water (monsoon rainfall and stream inflow) and evaporation, but is also influenced by proximity to the isotopically depleted stream inflow. We conclude that in the deep water environment lithogenic content, and isotopic composition of organic matter can be used for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sentence length influences the frequency of stuttering. Fourteen stutterers read, in random order, 20 long and 20 short sentences. The long sentences were constructed by means of additions to the short ones: for example, She learned to swim and She learned to swim in the clear water of the lake. Only the words that the pairs of sentences had in common were compared for occurrence of stuttering. Significantly more stuttering was found on the same words when they served as the initial segments of long sentences than when they stood alone as short sentences. The results seem to give evidence of the role of motor planning, or anticipated motor complexity in stuttering.

This document addresses the idea that Raven's task was primarily one of data collection: several observations regarding the data are in order; (1) Virtually all lower-level people felt that they had little or no input into the timeline setting process; (2) Of all the SGL Form 50's examined, none had estimates in excess of 1000 manhours; (3) The computational error rate on the Form 50's is remarkable; (4) A frequent complaint heard at SGL was that the person doing the work did not have access (due to transfers, resignations, etc.) to the person completing the Form 50; (5) Although PMS and REMARCS regularly collect manpower data, SGL currently has no program for collecting manpower data which can be traced back to SCR's; and (6) While PMS is an extremely powerful management tool, its slow turnaround time severely limits its usefulness. It is recommended that the Decision Support System, currently under development by AIRMICS, incorporate a scheduling/resource allocation program (such as PMS) which will allow managers to schedule and plan in an interactive environment.
