Introduction: Burnout and mental health disorders in parents can have significant implications for families. Little is known about these conditions in working parents. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and mental health risk factors for working parent burnout., Method: De-identified data were collected on a convenience sample of 1285 working parents through an online survey., Results: Sixty-five percent of working parents reported burnout. Depression, anxiety, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder, abuse, or history of a mental health disorder in the parent were significantly correlated with parental burnout. Anxiety, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder, presence of a mental health disorder in the child, or if parents thought their child might have a mental health disorder were significantly correlated with parent burnout. Virtual reality (VR) simulation use in graduate nursing education is a growing innovative trend that can help with competency-based education. The Virtual Reality Simulation to aid in competency-based online nurse practitioner curriculum (VR-NP) pilot innovation and quality improvement project sought to deliver VR simulation as an educational strategy in an online graduate nursing program advanced health assessment course that enrolled sixty-six students. Twenty-nine of the students were provided loaner VR equipment to complete simulated advanced health assessments from their home while the remainder of students completed the same simulations using screen-based technology. For all students, weekly simulations were paired with follow-up debriefing led by faculty using synchronous web conferencing. Students using VR completed a mid-implementation and post-implementation survey, consisting of the System Usability Scale (SUS), Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified (SET-M), and open ended questions. Students using screen-based technology, completed similar surveys with only the SET-M and open-ended questions. Necessary adjustments were made to the implementation process based on data received mid-implementation. Overall students were satisfied with the use of VR simulation from a distance and minimal implementation challenges were encountered. Background: Factors including sleep disturbances, shift work, secondary traumatization, and workplace violence make emergency nurses uniquely susceptible to burnout. A recent study cited nearly half of emergency registered nurses (49.3%) experienced moderate to severe burnout. There is an urgent need for evidence-based solutions to address burnout and turnover in emergency nurses. The objective of this quality improvement project was to determine the effectiveness of a wellness coaching program for reducing burnout and turnover in emergency nurses and advanced practice providers., Methods: Baseline assessments of burnout and turnover intention were measured at the beginning of the coaching program and measured again upon completion of the coaching program., Intervention: Eight registered nurses and 2 advanced practice providers from an emergency department in a west coast community hospital completed 6 to 8 weeks of wellness coaching led by a board-certified nurse coach. The wellness coaching program was an evidence-based, modular curriculum in which participants chose the number and length of sessions., Results: An average of 6 hours of individualized, 1-on-1 wellness coaching was completed over 7.5 weeks. The project resulted in a large reduction in emotional exhaustion and turnover intention, no effect on depersonalization, and a small reduction in lack of personal achievement (Cohen's d = 0.79, 1.53, -0.18, and -0.35). Ninety percent of clinicians agreed or strongly agreed that coaching helped improve their burnout and said they would consider it again in the future., Conclusion: This quality improvement project demonstrates wellness coaching was an evidence-based solution for improving burnout and turnover in emergency nurses. Burnout is a public health crisis that persists at the expense of clinician well-being, the healthcare workforce, and the quality of care provided. Clinician well-being is a professional imperative, yet nursing students still report higher levels of burnout than non-nursing students. Cultivating an academic learning environment that supports the development of resiliency, well-being, and improved student mental health requires a coordinated and sustained effort from nurse educators and academic leaders. This article aims to inspire nurse educators to take the first or next steps toward integrating wellness into nursing curricula. The ten dimensions of wellness provide a framework for wellness programming. Practical strategies aligned with each dimension are offered. As an exemplar, the Banding Together for Wellness program is summarized, including innovative incentives for student participation. Over the past five years, 426 (approximately 54 %) undergraduate nursing students voluntarily completed the program. While best practices may vary by institution, the strategies and resources offered herein can support nurse educators in the classroom, lab, and clinical setting as we all work to foster personal and professional well-being in nursing students. Introduction: Parental burnout is an underrecognized condition with adverse consequences for parents and children. The objective of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of a new scale, the Working Parent Burnout Scale, and a concurrent one-item assessment., Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted. The sample included parents (N = 1,285) living with children < 18 years. Content, face, construct, and predictive validity and reliability were established., Results: Cronbach α was 0.90 with the elimination of item four on the scale. All factor loadings were > 0.40. The one-factor model was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The Pearson r correlation was 0.59 for the total score on the original 10-item burnout scale (item 4 excluded) and the one-item assessment., Discussion: These are the first known scales to measure working parent burnout. Background: Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and affects nearly one in two adults in the United States when defined as a blood pressure of at least 130/80 mm Hg or on antihypertensive medication (Virani et al., 2021, Circulation, 143, e254). Long-standing disparities in hypertension awareness, treatment, and control among racial and ethnic populations exist in the United States. High-quality evidence exists for how to prevent and control hypertension and for the role nurses can play in this effort. In response to the 2020 Surgeon General's Call to Action to Control Hypertension, nursing leaders from 11 national organizations identified the critical roles and actions of nursing in improving hypertension control and cardiovascular health, focusing on evidence-based nursing interventions and available resources., Aims: To develop a unified "Call to Action for Nurses" to improve control of hypertension and cardiovascular health and provide information and resources to execute this call., Methods: This paper outlines roles that registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, schools of nursing, professional nursing organizations, quality improvement nurses, and nursing researchers can play to control hypertension and prevent CVD in the United States. It describes evidence-based interventions to improve cardiovascular health and outlines actions to bring hypertension and CVD to the forefront as a national priority for nursing., Linking Evidence to Action: Evidence-based interventions exist for nurses to lead efforts to prevent and control hypertension, thus preventing much CVD. Background: High rates of mental health conditions and poor healthy lifestyle behaviors are reported in nurses, other clinicians, and health science students but have not been compared across different professions., Purpose: The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) describe rates of mental health problems and healthy lifestyle behaviors across the Big 10 health professional faculty and students, (2) compare the health and healthy lifestyle behaviors of the Big 10 health sciences faculty and students across health sciences' professions, and (3) identify factors predictive of depression, stress, and anxiety., Methods: Faculty and students from eight health science colleges at the Big 10 Universities responded to the study survey, which included: demographics, healthy lifestyle behavior questions, and three valid/reliable mental health scales. Descriptive statistics described the findings and multiple linear regression identified factors associated with mental health conditions., Results: Eight-hundred and sixty-nine faculty and 1087 students responded. Approximately 50% of faculty and students reported 7 h of sleep/night, a third achieved 150 min of physical activity/week; 5.5%-9.9% screened positive for depression; and 11.5%-25.5% had anxiety. Age, sleep, and physical activity were associated with lower depression and anxiety., Conclusions: University leadership must build wellness cultures that make healthy lifestyle behaviors easy to engage in and enhance mental well-being., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: To estimate the effects of stress on hypertension and high cholesterol with a focus on Million Hearts priority populations., Design: A population-based cross-sectional survey on cardiovascular health and its risk factors., Setting: Million Hearts cardiovascular community screenings., Sample: Deidentified data were collected on a convenience sample of 59 798 participants., Measures: Self-reported stress score using the Perceived Stress Scale-4 (PSS-4), blood pressure, and total cholesterol., Analysis: Descriptive statistics were used to estimate the prevalence of high stress (PSS-4 score ≥ 9), prehypertension or hypertension, and elevated total cholesterol. Multiple logistic regression modeling was used to estimate the effect of stress on the risk of elevated blood pressure and total cholesterol., Results: Twenty-four percent of the participants had high stress. Younger participants had an increased prevalence of high stress than older participants (28% vs 20%, P < .001). African Americans had a high prevalence of stress (26.4%), prehypertension or hypertension (65.4%), and elevated total cholesterol (48.6%). Compared to those with low stress, high stress was associated with significant higher risks of having prehypertension/hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 1.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.28-1.53) and elevated cholesterol (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.41-1.66)., Conclusions: Stress needs to be routinely identified and treated, especially in Million Hearts priority populations. More research is needed in designing culturally sensitive and effectively tailored interventions relative to both stress and disease management.

Mental illness is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in society. Undergraduate nursing students designed and implemented a mental health awareness campaign called the I Will Help You initiative as part of their senior leadership nursing course. The aims of the initiative were to: spread awareness on mental illness; give the general public the skills and resources needed to identify and assist individuals who are struggling with mental illness; and decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness. A website, four online educational modules, four social media accounts, and two videos were designed by the students in order to promote the initiative. One month following the initiative's launch, the website had over 4000 page views, the videos had over 20,000 views, there were over 200 pledges, and the educational modules had 60 users. The initiative received substantial media attention and was featured via a variety of platforms including: a local news story, numerous health blogs, the state nurses' website and across the university campus. The I Will Help You initiative provided real life application of nursing leadership to an undergraduate student population while building a sustainable, evidence-based tool that can be used as a public health resource for mental illness., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: To present nationally representative data on the prevalence of "social" smoking and its relationship to cardiovascular health., Design: A population-based, cross-sectional survey on cardiovascular health and its risk factors across the United States., Setting: Million Hearts ® cardiovascular screenings that took place in community settings., Participants: De-identified data were collected on a convenient sample of 39, 555 participants., Measures: Reported smoking status, blood pressure, and total cholesterol., Analysis: The prevalence of current smoking, social smoking, and non-smoking were cross-tabulated and stratified by sample characteristics. The adjusted estimates were derived from multiple logistic regression models, adjusting for demographics and other biometric measures., Results: Ten percent identified as social smokers. Social smokers were more likely to be aged between 21 and 40, male, and Hispanic. Social smokers had significantly higher risks of having hypertension (odds ratio [OR]: 2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.80-2.41) and elevated cholesterol (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.33-1.75) than non-smokers. There was no significant difference between social smokers and current smokers (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.80-1.14 for hypertension and OR = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.81-1.11 for elevated cholesterol)., Conclusion: This is the first population health study to compare the blood pressure and cholesterol levels of people who self-identify as current verses social smokers. Although previous smoking behavior was not controlled for in the analysis, this study demonstrates there is no significant difference in the prevalence of elevated blood pressure or cholesterol among the 2 smoking groups.
