Abstract

After eight months in his childhood home helping his mother through her bout with cancer, Matthew Frank and his wife were themselves desperate for comfort. They found sanctuary in the most unlikely place—amid a collection of outcasts and eccentrics on a plot of land miles outside their comfort zone: a “mostly medical” marijuana farm in California. Pot Farm details the strange, sublime, and sometimes dangerous goings-on at Weckman Farm, a place with hidden politics and social hierarchies, populated by recovering drug addicts, alternative healers, pseudo-hippie kids, and medical marijuana users looking to give back. There is also Lady Wanda, the massive, elusive, wealthy, and heavily armed businesswoman who owns the farm and runs it from beneath a housedress and a hat of peacock feathers. Frank explores the various roles that allow this industry to work—from field pickers to tractor drivers, cooks to yoga instructors, managers to snipers, illegal immigrants to legal revisionists, and the delivery crew to the hospice workers on the other end. Abstract

Depending on the patient population, the incidence of scarring is as great as 75% after burns. Skin pliability and functional recovery are affected negatively by hypertrophic scarring. Therapists use various treatment strategies to improve scar outcomes. However, a simple, objective, clinically useful method of measuring scar response to treatment eludes us. This study examines the inter-rater reliability and validity of scar pliability measures using the modified tissue tonometer (MTT). Twenty-four patients were tested by two blinded, randomly allocated raters. The MTT was used to assess scar pliability with a standardized, repeated-measures design. One normal and up to three scar points were assessed for each subject. One subject was excluded from the data analyses. Concerning inter-rater reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficient for averaged measures between measurers was 0.957, and the standard error of measurement was 0.025 mm. For validity, a significant difference (P = .0000) between scar (2.64 +/- 0.5 mm) and normal tissue (3.23 +/- 0.46 mm) measurements was demonstrated. Scar pliability scores between raters are extremely reliable and reproducible using the MTT. It can differentiate between injured and uninjured tissue. Hence, it provides clinicians with a reliable, transportable, and objective tool to document scar outcomes. The MTT provides a standardized method to longitudinally measure scar tissue pliability after burn injury.

43. A survey of the fishes of Lake Winnipeg and interactions of the introduced white bass with the native ichthyofauna of Hudson Bay drainage : with emphasis on young-of-the-year fishes in nearshore environments

Abstract

This project examined the littoral zone fish communities of Lake Winnipeg and adjacent waterways to determine 1) the distribution of all nearshore fishes, 2) the seasonal use of nearshore habitat by pelagic fish, 3) the food resources used by nearshore fish, 4) the fish species that are sympatric with white bass and 5) the diet similarity among fish species in sympatry with the invading white bass. Four basic distribution patterns were identified for the fishes of the Red River, Lake Winnipeg and their tributaries, and these are presented as individual species maps. Fish move inshore in early to late June and remain there until September. All combinations of pelagic fish occured in samples, suggesting no spatial or temporal habitat shift in the presence of white bass. Pelagic insectivorous, pelagic piscivorous, pelagic zooplanktivorous and benthic insectivorous feeding guilds were defined from analysis of the diets of nearshore fishes. Feeding guilds appeared stable throughout the summer with the exception of emerald shiners, which ate zooplankton and insects in varying proportions. Diet analysis determined that yellow perch, emerald shiner, goldeye, juvenile walleye and sauger and cisco feed on the same zooplankton species as juvenile white bass. Adult white bass feed on the same fish as adult walleye and sauger. Pelagic fish commonly found in sympatry with the white bass include goldeye, mooneye, walleye, sauger, emerald shiner, and yellow perch. These fish are found throughout the lake with no northward range retreat in response to invasion of white bass. Segregation by time occurs in this lake and minimizes contact between white bass, cisco and lake whitefish. There is no evidence of abundance decline, habitat shift or diet shift in native fish in relation to the presence of white bass and therefore there is no evidence for competition resulting from the white bass invasion.
