We compute the one-loop contribution to the $\bar{\theta}$-parameter of an axion-like particle (ALP) with CP-odd derivative couplings. Its contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment is shown to be orders of magnitude larger than that stemming from the one-loop ALP contributions to the up- and down-quark electric and chromoelectric dipole moments. This strongly improves existing bounds on ALP-fermion CP-odd interactions, and also sets limits on previously unconstrained couplings. The case of a general singlet scalar is analyzed as well. We demonstrate that the true QCD axion that solves the strong CP problem can be found in all generality outside the customary standard QCD band, with QCD being the sole source of Peccei-Quinn breaking. The essential reason is that the basis of axion-gluon interactions does not need to coincide with the mass basis. Specifically, we consider the case in which the QCD axion field is not the only singlet scalar in Nature but it mixes with other singlet scalars (besides the $\eta'$). We determine the exact mathematical condition for an arbitrary $N$-scalar potential to be Peccei-Quinn invariant. Such potentials provide extra sources of mass for the customary axion without enlarging the Standard Model gauge symmetry. The contribution to the axion mass stemming from the QCD topological susceptibility is shown to be shared then among the $N$ axion eigenstates through a precise sum rule. Their location can only be displaced to the right of the standard QCD band. We demonstrate that the axion closest to this band can be displaced from it by a factor of $\sqrt{N}$ at most, and this corresponds to the case in which all axion signals are maximally deviated. Conversely, if one axion is found on the standard QCD band, the other eigenstates will be out of experimental reach. Our results imply that any ALP experiment which finds a signal outside the standard QCD axion band can be solving the strong CP problem within QCD, with the associated $N-1$ excitations to be found in an area of parameter space that we determine. The symmetry-protected masses and potentials of those discrete Goldstone bosons offer promising physics avenues, both theoretically and in view of the blooming experimental search for ALPs. We develop this theoretical setup using invariant theory and focusing on the maximally natural minima of the potential. For these, we show that typically a subgroup of the ultraviolet discrete symmetry remains explicit in the spectrum, i.e. realized "\`a la Wigner"; this subgroup can be either abelian or non-abelian. This suggests tell-tale experimental signals for those minima: at least two (three) degenerate scalars produced simultaneously if abelian (non-abelian), while the specific ratios of multi-scalar amplitudes provide a hint of the full ultraviolet discrete symmetry. We explore whether the axion which solves the strong CP problem can naturally be much lighter than the canonical QCD axion. The $Z_\mathcal{N}$ symmetry proposed by Hook, with $\mathcal{N}$ mirror and degenerate worlds coexisting in Nature and linked by the axion field, is considered and the associated phenomenology is studied in detail. On a second step, we show that dark matter can be accounted for by this extremely light axion. This includes the first proposal of a "fuzzy dark matter" QCD axion. A novel misalignment mechanism occurs -- trapped misalignment -- due to the peculiar temperature dependence of the $Z_\mathcal{N}$ axion potential, which in some cases can also dynamically source the recently proposed kinetic misalignment mechanism. The resulting universal enhancement of all axion interactions relative to those of the canonical QCD axion has a strong impact on the prospects of ALP experiments such as ALPS II, IAXO and many others. We show that dark matter can be accounted for by an axion that solves the strong CP problem, but is much lighter than usual due to a $Z_\mathcal{N}$ symmetry. The whole mass range from the canonical QCD axion down to the ultra-light regime is allowed, with $3\le\mathcal{N}\lesssim65$. This includes the first proposal of a "fuzzy dark matter" QCD axion with $m_a\sim10^{-22}$ eV. A novel misalignment mechanism occurs --{\it trapped misalignment}-- due to the peculiar temperature dependence of the $Z_{\mathcal{N}}$ axion potential. The dark matter relic density is enhanced because the axion field undergoes two stages of oscillations: it is first trapped in the wrong minimum, which effectively delays the onset of true oscillations. Trapped misalignment is more general than the setup discussed here, and may hold whenever an extra source of Peccei-Quinn breaking appears at high temperatures. Furthermore, it will be shown that trapped misalignment can dynamically source the recently proposed kinetic misalignment mechanism. All the parameter space is within tantalizing reach of the experimental projects for the next decades. We explore whether the axion which solves the strong CP problem can naturally be much lighter than the canonical QCD axion. The $Z_\mathcal{N}$ symmetry proposed by Hook, with $\mathcal{N}$ mirror and degenerate worlds coexisting in Nature and linked by the axion field, is considered in terms of generic effective axion couplings. We show that the total potential is safely approximated by a single cosine in the large $\mathcal{N}$ limit, and we determine the analytical formula for the exponentially suppressed axion mass. The resulting universal enhancement of all axion interactions relative to those of the canonical QCD axion has a strong impact on the prospects of axion-like particle experiments such as ALPS II, IAXO and many others. The finite density axion potential is also analyzed and we show that the $Z_\mathcal{N}$ asymmetric background of high-density stellar environments sets already significant model-independent constraints: $3\le\mathcal{N}\lesssim47$ for an axion scale $f_a\lesssim 2.4\times10^{15}$ GeV, with tantalizing discovery prospects for any value of $f_a$ and down to $\mathcal{N}\sim9$ with future neutron star and gravitational wave data, down to the ultra-light mass region. In the context of the minimal SO(5) linear {\sigma}-model, a complete renormalizable Lagrangian -including gauge bosons and fermions- is considered, with the symmetry softly broken to SO(4). The scalar sector describes both the electroweak Higgs doublet and the singlet {\sigma}. Varying the {\sigma} mass would allow to sweep from the regime of perturbative ultraviolet completion to the non-linear one assumed in models in which the Higgs particle is a low-energy remnant of some strong dynamics. We analyze the phenomenological implications and constraints from precision observables and LHC data. Furthermore, we derive the d <= 6 effective Lagrangian in the limit of heavy exotic fermions.

This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $\tau\to 3\mu$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation, Comment: 200 pages + appendices/references

In composite Higgs models the Higgs is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of a high-energy strong dynamics. We have constructed the effective chiral Lagrangian for a generic symmetric coset, restricting to CP-even bosonic operators up to four momenta which turn out to depend on seven parameters, aside from kinetic terms. Once the same sources of custodial symmetry breaking as in the Standard Model are considered, the total number of operators in the basis increases up to ten, again aside from kinetic terms. Under these assumptions, we have then particularised the discussion to three distinct frameworks: the original $SU(5)/SO(5)$ Georgi-Kaplan model, the minimal custodial-preserving $SO(5)/SO(4)$ model and the minimal $SU(3)/(SU(2)\times U(1))$ model, which intrinsically breaks custodial symmetry. The projection of the high-energy electroweak effective theory into the bosonic sector of the Standard Model is shown to match the low-energy chiral effective Lagrangian for a dynamical Higgs, and it uncovers strong relations between the operator coefficients. We compute the muon to electron conversion in the type-I seesaw model, as a function of the right-handed neutrino mixings and masses. The results are compared with previous computations in the literature. We determine the definite predictions resulting for the ratios between the muon to electron conversion rate for a given nucleus and the rate of two other processes which also involve a mu-e flavour transition: mu -> e gamma and mu -> eee. For a quasi-degenerate mass spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses -which is the most natural scenario leading to observable rates- those ratios depend only on the seesaw mass scale, offering a quite interesting testing ground. In the case of sterile neutrinos heavier than the electroweak scale, these ratios vanish typically for a mass scale of order a few TeV. Furthermore, the analysis performed here is also valid down to very light masses. It turns out that planned mu -> e conversion experiments would be sensitive to masses as low as 2 MeV. Taking into account other experimental constraints, we show that future mu -> e conversion experiments will be fully relevant to detect or constrain sterile neutrino scenarios in the 2 GeV-1000 TeV mass range., Comment: 32 pages 14 figures, references added and some minor precisions; results unchanged

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard {\mu} - {\tau} flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement.
