Abstract

The ECN3 Beam Delivery Task Force was mandated by the PBC Study Group to assess the technical feasibility of increasing the proton beam intensity to the ECN3 hall of the North Area to satisfy the demands of a compelling set of PBC experimental physics proposals. This report summarises the findings of the Task Force that converge on a technically feasible solution with an implementation timeline that could exploit and build upon the investment already foreseen as part of Phase 1 of the NA-CONS project, and take the SPS complex into a new intensity frontier for Fixed Target physics in Run4.

Abstract

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/ c muons on a transversely polarised 6 LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both, the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions. Abstract

We present the first measurement of the gluon polarisation in the nucleon based on the photon-gluon fusion process tagged by charmed meson production and decay to charged K and pi. The data were collected in polarised muon scattering off a polarised deuteron target by the COMPASS collaboration at CERN during 2002-2004. The result of this LO analysis is _x = -0.47 +- 0.44 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst) at ~= 0.11 and a scale mu^2 ~ 13 (GeV/c)^2., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole range of x., 17 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Due to the vanishing quadrupole interaction only a single narrow 2.8 kHz full-width half-maximum nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) line is observed in the (LiD)-Li-6 target material for deuterium and Li-6 with spin 1. The second and fourth moments are obtained from a Memory function fit to the measured NMR signal. The values are compared to the calculations from dipole interaction between nuclei. Abstract

The COMPASS (NA58) experiment at CERN operates with a large solid polarized target (PT) to study the spin structure of the nucleon. The COMPASS PT system started its operation with the target material (LiD)-Li-6 in 2001. Deuteron polarizations of +54.2% and -47.1% were achieved in a He-3/He-4 dilution refrigerator at a magnetic field of 2.5 T. The equal spin temperature (EST) concept was found to hold among the deuteron, the Li-6 and the Li-7 nuclei during the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) process. The agreement with the EST concept allows the permanent monitoring of only one nuclear species by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
