Non-resolving consolidation refers to the persistence of radiographic abnormalities beyond the anticipated timeframe. Conditions such as infection, malignancy, inflammatory disorders, and connective tissue diseases can all manifest as non-resolving consolidation. We share a clinicopathological case study involving a 30-year-old male who exhibits non-resolving consolidation accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly.

Past studies have empirically demonstrated a surprising agreement between gravitational waveforms computed using adiabatic–driven–inspiral point–particle black hole perturbation theory (ppBHPT) and numerical relativity (NR) following a straightforward calibration step, sometimes referred to as α-β scaling. Specifically focusing on the quadrupole mode, this calibration technique necessitates only two time-independent parameters to scale the overall amplitude and time coordinate. In this article, part of a Special Issue, we investigate this scaling for non-spinning binaries at the equal-mass limit. Even without calibration, NR and ppBHPT waveforms exhibit an unexpected degree of similarity after accounting for different mass scale definitions. Post-calibration, good agreement between ppBHPT and NR waveforms extends nearly up to the point of the merger. We also assess the breakdown of the time-independent assumption of the scaling parameters, shedding light on current limitations and suggesting potential generalizations for the α-β scaling technique.

Over the past few decades, public universities have faced significant declines in state funding per student. We investigate whether these declines affected the educational and research outcomes of these schools. Declining funding induced public universities to shift toward tuition as their primary source of revenue. Selective research universities enrolled more out-of-state and international students who pay full fare and increased in-state tuitions, moderating impacts on expenditures. Public universities outside the research sector had fewer options to replace stagnating state appropriations, requiring diminished expenditures and increased in-state tuitions. We find suggestive evidence that cuts have negatively affected research, and more definitive evidence that they adversely affected degree attainment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Background/Aims The existing histological classifications for the interpretation of small intestinal biopsies are based on qualitative parameters with high intraobserver and interobserver variations. We have developed and propose a quantitative histological classification system for the assessment of intestinal mucosal biopsies. Methods We performed a computer-assisted quantitative histological assessment of digital images of duodenal biopsies from 137 controls and 124 patients with celiac disease (CeD) (derivation cohort). From the receiver-operating curve analysis, followed by multivariate and logistic regression analyses, we identified parameters for differentiating control biopsies from those of the patients with CeD. We repeated the quantitative histological analysis in a validation cohort (105 controls and 120 patients with CeD). On the basis of the results, we propose a quantitative histological classification system. The new classification was compared with the existing histological classifications for interobserver and intraobserver agreements by a group of qualified pathologists. Results Among the histological parameters, intraepithelial lymphocyte count of ≥25/100 epithelial cells, adjusted villous height fold change of ≤0.7, and crypt depth-to-villous height ratio of ≥0.5 showed good discriminative power between the mucosal biopsies from the patients with CeD and those from the controls, with 90.3% sensitivity, 93.5% specificity, and 96.2% area under the curve. Among the existing histological classifications, our quantitative histological classification showed the highest intraobserver (69.7%–85.03%) and interobserver (24.6%–71.5%) agreements. Conclusions Quantitative assessment increases the reliability of the histological assessment of mucosal biopsies in patients with CeD. Such a classification system may be used for clinical trials in patients with CeD.

Context: Cysts arising from the hepatobiliary tree are a group of heterogeneous lesions with regard to pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and radiological finding. They can be intrahepatic or extrahepatic, developmental, secondary to infective/inflammatory etiologies, as well as neoplastic. This study was conducted to determine the spectrum of hepatobiliary cysts in surgically intervened cases, with regard to their prevalence, histological spectrum, and clinicoradiological correlation, wherever possible. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, hematoxylin and eosin stained slides of all cases of hepatobiliary cystic lesions, operated between 2009 and 2016 were reviewed. Special stains as reticulin, Masson's trichrome, and periodic acid Schiff were done wherever necessary. Overall prevalence, age-sex distribution, clinical presentation and histopathological patterns were studied. Relevant imaging findings were correlated wherever possible. Results: A total of 312 cases of hepatobiliary cysts were identified, the majority in females. Choledochal cysts (CCs) were the most common type (n = 198,63.5%), followed by hydatid cysts (n = 73,23.3%), simple hepatic cysts (n = 10,3.2%), congenital hepatic fibrosis (n = 10,3.2%), biliary cystadenomas (n = 4,1.2%) hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas (n = 7,2.2%), and cavernous hemangiomas (n = 3,0.9%). Fibropolycystic liver disease (n = 2,0.6%), Caroli's disease (n = 1, 0.3%), liver abscess (n = 2, 0.6%), infantile hemangioendothelioma (n = 1,0.3%), and biliary cystadenocarcinomas (n = 1,0.3%) were rare. Lesions noted mostly in 1st decade of life were: CCs, fibrocystic liver disease, Caroli's syndrome, cystic mesenchymal hamartoma, and infantile hemangioendotheliomas. Conclusion: In our cohort of surgically intervened cases of hepatobiliary cystic lesions from a tertiary care hospital in North India, the CCs, followed by hydatid cyst were the most common lesions. Histology can play vital role in characterization, as often clinical findings and radiology can overlap.

Histological diagnosis of biliary cystadenoma is based on the type of epithelial cells lining the cyst and radiological features. The cyst-lining cells are not usually ciliated. We herein report a very rare example of an intrahepatic biliary cystadenoma with ciliated epithelial lining, which had taken us away from this diagnosis toward an intrahepatic foregut duplication cyst. Radiologically, also the lesion was deceptive, and a possibility of hydatid cyst was considered. However, immunohistochemical workup finally led us to this diagnosis. This report would document this rare morphological variant, which may pose diagnostic difficulty.

Recent studies of scalar and gravitational waveforms from high-eccentricity, extreme mass-ratio black-hole binaries show the presence of quasinormal bursts (QNBs), lingering high-frequency decaying oscillations (also known as “wiggles”), soon after each periapsis passage. One puzzle associated with these QNBs is that in the case of a nearly extreme rotating central black hole the frequency of the QNBs has been found to be in a range which is lower than the corresponding range of relevant quasinormal modes. We reproduce these results using a different approach and perform a detailed analysis to find evidence for the resolution of the puzzle and for the origin of the QNBs. We find that the QNB frequency as measured at future null infinity evolves in (retarded) time and approaches the dominant quasinormal frequency exponentially in time. We also show that the QNB amplitude decays inversely in (retarded) time. We discuss the time dependence of both the QNB waveform frequency and its amplitude and argue that this behavior arises as a result of the excitation of many quasinormal overtones and the summation thereof.

It has been shown recently that extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes perturbed by a minimally coupled, free, massless scalar field have permanent scalar hair. The hair, a conserved charge calculated at the black hole's event horizon, can be measured by a certain expression at future null infinity: The latter approaches the hair inversely in time. We generalize this newly discovered hair also for extreme Kerr black holes. We study the behavior of nearly extreme black hole hair and its measurement at future null infinity as a transient phenomenon. For nearly extreme black holes the measurement at future null infinity of the length of the newly grown hair decreases quadratically in time at intermediate times until its length becomes short and the rate at which the length shortens further slows down. Eventually, the nearly extreme black hole becomes bald again like nonextreme black holes.

In this article, we review the use of numerical techniques to obtain solutions for the quantum Hamiltonian constraint in loop quantum cosmology (LQC). First, we summarize the basic features of LQC, and describe features of the constraint equations to solve - generically, these are difference (rather than differential) equations. Important issues such as differing quantization methods, stability of the solutions, the semi-classical limit, and the relevance of lattice refinement in the difference equations are discussed. Finally, the cosmological models already considered in the literature are listed, along with typical features in these models and open issues.

We describe the hyperboloidal compactification for Teukolsky equations in Kerr spacetime. We include null infinity on the numerical grid by attaching a hyperboloidal layer to a compact domain surrounding the rotating black hole and the orbit of an inspiralling point particle. This technique allows us to study, for the first time, gravitational waveforms from large- and extreme-mass-ratio inspirals in Kerr spacetime extracted at null infinity. Tests and comparisons of our results with previous calculations establish the accuracy and efficiency of the hyperboloidal layer method.
