Search

We present a proposal for a future light dark matter search experiment at the Electron Stretcher Accelerator ELSA in Bonn: Lohengrin. It employs the fixed-target missing momentum based technique for searching for dark-sector particles. The Lohengrin experiment uses a high intensity electron beam that is shot onto a thin target to produce mainly SM bremsstrahlung and - in rare occasions - possibly new particles coupling feebly to the electron. A well motivated candidate for such a new particle is the dark photon, a new massive gauge boson arising from a new gauge interaction in a dark sector and mixing kinetically with the standard model photon. The Lohengrin experiment is estimated to reach sensitivity to couplings small enough to explain the relic abundance of dark matter in various models for dark photon masses between approximately 1 MeV and approximately 100 MeV.

We extend the recently presented, fully exclusive, next-to-leading-order accurate event generator for the simulation of massless neutral- and charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the case of incoming neutrinos. The generator can be used to study neutrino-nucleon interactions at (ultra) high energies, and is relevant for a range of fixed-target collider experiments and large-volume neutrino detectors, investigating atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos. The matching with multi-purpose event generators such as PYTHIA 8 is performed with the POWHEG method, and accounts for parton showering and non-perturbative effects such as hadronization. This makes it possible to investigate higher-order perturbative corrections to realistic observables, such as the distribution of charged particles. To illustrate the capabilities of the code we provide predictions for several differential distributions in fixed-target collisions for neutrino energies up to 1 PeV., Comment: 16 pages. In the context of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) the next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) QCD corrections to the Higgsstrahlungs ($Vh$) processes in hadronic collisions are calculated and matched to a parton shower (PS). NNLO+PS precision is achieved for the complete sets of SMEFT operators that describe the interactions between the Higgs and two vector bosons and the couplings of the Higgs, a $W$ or a $Z$ boson, and light fermions. A POWHEG-BOX implementation of the computed NNLO SMEFT corrections is provided that allows for a realistic exclusive description of $Vh$ production at the level of hadronic events. This feature makes it an essential tool for future Higgs characterisation studies by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Utilising our new Monte Carlo code the numerical impact of NNLO+PS corrections on the kinematic distributions in $pp \to Zh \to \ell^+ \ell^- h$ production is explored, employing well-motivated SMEFT benchmark scenarios., Comment: 43 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables; v2: revised manuscript published in JHEP

Identifying the flavour of reconstructed hadronic jets is critical for precision phenomenology and the search for new physics at collider experiments, as it allows to pinpoint specific scattering processes and reject backgrounds. Jet measurements at the LHC are almost universally performed using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm, however no approach exists to define the jet flavour for this algorithm that is infrared and collinear (IRC) safe. We propose a new approach, a flavour dressing algorithm, that is IRC safe to all orders in perturbation theory and can be combined with any definition of a jet. We test the algorithm in $\mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{e}^-$ and $\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p}$ environments, and consider the $\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p} \to \mathrm{Z}+\mathrm{b}\text{-jet}$ process as a practical application., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. v2: revision of original algorithm due to infrared and collinear safety issues

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We present an updated determination of nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs) from a global NLO QCD analysis of hard processes in fixed-target lepton-nucleus and proton-nucleus together with collider proton-nucleus experiments. In addition to neutral- and charged-current deep-inelastic and Drell-Yan measurements on nuclear targets, we consider the information provided by the production of electroweak gauge bosons, isolated photons, jet pairs, and charmed mesons in proton-lead collisions at the LHC across centre-of-mass energies of 5.02 TeV (Run I) and 8.16 TeV (Run II). For the first time in a global nPDF analysis, the constraints from these various processes are accounted for both in the nuclear PDFs and in the free-proton PDF baseline. The extensive dataset underlying the nNNPDF3.0 determination, combined with its model-independent parametrisation, reveals strong evidence for nuclear-induced modifications of the partonic structure of heavy nuclei, specifically for the small-$x$ shadowing of gluons and sea quarks, as well as the large-$x$ anti-shadowing of gluons. As a representative phenomenological application, we provide predictions for ultra-high-energy neutrino-nucleon cross-sections, relevant for data interpretation at neutrino observatories. Our results provide key input for ongoing and future experimental programs, from that of heavy-ion collisions in controlled collider environments to the study of high-energy astrophysical processes., Comment: 61 pages, 38 figures

We present predictions for the interactions of energetic neutrinos with matter as they propagate through Earth towards large-volume detectors. Our results are based on state-of-the-art calculations of the high-energy neutrino-matter interaction cross-sections, which we have implemented in the HEDIS module of GENIE. In addition to the dominant interaction process, deep inelastic scattering off quarks and gluons, we include the relevant subdominant channels: (in)elastic scattering off the photon field of nucleons, coherent scattering off the photon field of nuclei, as well as the scattering on atomic electrons via the Glashow resonance. Our predictions for the neutrino attenuation rates are provided by a new software package, NuPropEarth. The scattering rate of multi-${\rm TeV}$ and ${\rm PeV}$ energy neutrinos is fast becoming an interesting topic in (astro)particle-physics. This is due to experimental progress at Neutrino Telescopes such as IceCube which have begun to gain sensitivity to the flux of neutrinos in this energy range. In view of this, a precise calculation of the scattering rate of neutrinos upon atoms is presented. The two main components of the calculation are the differential cross-section predictions for neutrino scattering upon an atomic nucleus (such as that which make up water), as well as upon atomic electrons. In the first case, the predictions for neutrino-nucleon cross-sections in charged- and neutral-current scattering are refined by including resonant contributions generated within the photon field of the nucleus, which alter the considered distributions by up to $\approx 4\%$. In the latter case, radiative corrections are provided for all $2\to2$ scattering processes of the form $\bar{\nu}_e e^-\to f\bar{f}^{\prime}$. For antineutrino energies of $E_{\bar{\nu}_e}\approx6{\rm~PeV}$, where these processes become resonantly enhanced (the Glashow resonance) and dominate the total cross-section, these corrections amount to $\approx-10\%$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. v2: Matches published version. We present a phenomenological analysis of asymmetric bottom- and charm-quark production within the LHCb acceptance relevant for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. Predictions are provided for both anti-$k_t$ bottom- and charm-jet pairs, which are kept differentially with respect to the invariant mass of the jet pair. It is quantified how data in this region can provide sensitivity to the couplings of the $Z$ boson to heavy quarks, and we investigate what precision is needed to compete with LEP. We also discuss how asymmetry and rate measurements can provide constraints on a particular class of new-physics models, which contains gauge bosons with small/moderate couplings to light/heavy quarks and masses of the order of $100 \, {\rm GeV}$. Predictions are obtained including all relevant QCD and QED/weak contributions up to next-to-leading order, which have been implemented in a Fortran code which allows to directly compute the asymmetric cross sections. We present state-of-the-art predictions for the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino-nucleus cross-sections in charged- and neutral-current scattering. The calculation is performed in the framework of collinear factorisation at NNLO, extended to include the resummation of small-$x$ BFKL effects. Further improvements are made by accounting for the free-nucleon PDF constraints provided by $D$-meson data from LHCb and assessing the impact of nuclear corrections and heavy-quark mass effects. The calculations presented here should play an important role in the interpretation of future data from neutrino telescopes such as IceCube and KM3NET, and highlight the opportunities that astroparticle experiments offer to study the strong interactions., Comment: 30 pages (incl. data tables), 15 figures (v2 - figures updated). This paper summarises a few selected topics discussed during Working Group 5 of the Deep Inelastic Scattering 2017 conference, Physics with Heavy Flavours, related to the study of charm, bottom, and top quark physics. While the programme of this Working Group was structured by thematic areas, this conference was the occasion for intense cross-pollination between traditionally disjoint research lines. The four LHC experiments all contribute to heavy-flavour physics, with some degree of overlap in most areas, while experiments at other accelerators provide vital input in complimentary kinematic regions. Theorists now have the possibility to take inputs from more sources, and experimentalists focus on measurements that maximise utility. We review the constraints on the small-x gluon PDF that can be derived by exploiting the forward D meson production data from the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=5,7$ and 13 TeV. We then discuss the phenomenological implications of the resulting improved small-x gluon for ultra-high energy astrophysics, in particular neutrino telescopes, as well as for the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) with $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV. The LHCb collaboration has recently performed a measurement of the production rate of inclusive $B$ hadron production ($pp\to BX$) at both 7 and 13~TeV centre-of-mass (CoM) energies. As part of this measurement, the ratio of these two cross section measurements has been presented differentially in $B$ hadron pseudorapidity within the range of $\eta_B \in [2.0,5.0]$. A large tension ($4\sigma$) is observed for the ratio measurement in the lower pseudorapidity range of $\eta_B \in [2.0,3.0]$, where the data is observed to exceed theoretical predictions, while consistency is found at larger $\eta_B$ values. This behaviour is not expected within perturbative QCD, and can only be achieved by introducing ad-hoc features into the structure of the non-perturbative gluon PDF within the region of $x\in[10^{-3},10^{-4}]$. Specifically, the gluon PDF must grow extremely quickly with decreasing $x$ within this kinematic range, closely followed by a period of decelerated growth. However, such behaviour is highly disfavoured by global fits to proton structure. Further studies of the available LHCb $B$ and $D$ hadron cross section data, available for a range of CoM energies, indicate systematic tension in the (pseudo)rapidity region of $[2.0,2.5]$., Comment: 31 pages

The small-$x$ gluon in global fits of parton distributions is affected by large uncertainties from the lack of direct experimental constraints. In this work we provide a precision determination of the small-$x$ gluon from the exploitation of forward charm production data provided by LHCb for three different centre-of-mass (CoM) energies: 5~TeV, 7~TeV and 13~TeV. The LHCb measurements are included in the PDF fit by means of normalized distributions and cross-section ratios between data taken at different CoM values, $R_{13/7}$ and $R_{13/5}$. We demonstrate that forward charm production leads to a reduction of the PDF uncertainties of the gluon down to $x\simeq 10^{-6}$ by up to an order of magnitude, with implications for high-energy colliders, cosmic ray physics and neutrino astronomy., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. We calculate the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s)$ QCD corrections to the inclusive $h\to b\bar b$ decay rate in the dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The QCD corrections multiplying the dimension-6 Wilson coefficients which alter the $hb\bar b$-vertex at tree-level are proportional to the Standard Model (SM) ones, so next-to-leading order results can be obtained through a simple rescaling of the tree-level decay rate. On the other hand, contributions from the operators $Q_{bG}$ and $Q_{HG}$, which alter the $gb\bar b$-vertex and introduce a $hgg$-vertex respectively, enter at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s)$ and induce sizeable corrections which are unrelated to the SM ones and cannot be anticipated through a renormalisation-group analysis. We present compact analytic results for these contributions, which we recommend to be included in future phenomenological studies., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. We calculate a set of one-loop corrections to $h\to b\bar b$ and $h\to \tau\bar \tau$ decays in the dimension-6 Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). In particular, working in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings, we calculate directly in the broken phase of the theory all large logarithmic corrections and in addition the finite corrections in the large-$m_t$ limit. Moreover, we give exact results for one-loop contributions from four-fermion operators. We obtain these corrections within an extension of the widely used on-shell renormalisation scheme appropriate for SMEFT calculations, and show explicitly how UV divergent bare amplitudes from a total of 21 different SMEFT operators are rendered finite within this scheme. As a by-product of the calculation, we also compute to one-loop order the logarithmically enhanced and finite large-$m_t$ corrections to muon decay in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings, which is necessary to implement the $G_F$ input parameter scheme within the SMEFT., Comment: 38 pages. The recent observation of very high energy cosmic neutrinos by IceCube heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At these energies, the dominant background to the astrophysical signal is the flux of `prompt' neutrinos, arising from the decay of charmed mesons produced by cosmic ray collisions in the atmosphere. In this work we provide predictions for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux in the framework of perturbative QCD, using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generators. Our calculation includes the constraints set by charm production measurements from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV, and has been recently validated with the corresponding 13 TeV data. Our results for the prompt flux are a factor of about 2 below the previous benchmark calculation, in general agreement with two other recent estimates, and with an improved estimate of the uncertainty. This alleviates the existing tension between the theoretical prediction and IceCube limits, and suggests that a direct direction of the prompt flux is imminent., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures; corrected conventional flux in Fig. 6, to appear in JHEP. Predictions are provided for double differential cross sections and forward-backward ratios of $D^{0}$ production in $p\rm Pb$ (forward) and $\rm{Pb}$$p$ (backward) collisions at 5.02~TeV. The effect of nuclear corrections on the ratio of differential cross sections ratios is estimated to be $\simeq$ (10-30)\% in the kinematically accessible region of LHCb, and interestingly this ratio is approximately flat with respect to $p_T(D^0)$ due to a compensation of shadowing and anti-shadowing effects arising from the input nuclear PDFs. In comparison to $J/\psi(\rightarrow\mu^-\mu^+)$ measurements which have already been performed with the available data, the cross section for $D^{0}(\rightarrow K^-\pi^+)$ production is expected to be two-orders of magnitude higher., Comment: 6 pages + References+Appendix, matches PRD version. The recent observation by the IceCube experiment of cosmic neutrinos at energies up to a few PeV heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At such high energies, the conventional neutrino flux is suppressed and the prompt component from charm meson decays is expected to become the dominant background to astrophysical neutrinos. Charm production at high energies is however theoretically uncertain, both since the charm mass is at the boundary of applicability of perturbative QCD, and also because the calculations are sensitive to the poorly-known gluon PDF at small-x. In this work we provide detailed perturbative QCD predictions for charm and bottom production in the forward region, and validate them by comparing with recent data from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV. Finding good agreement between data and theory, we use the LHCb measurements to constrain the small-x gluon PDF, achieving a substantial reduction in its uncertainties. Using these improved PDFs, we provide predictions for charm and bottom production at LHCb at 13 TeV, as well as for the ratio of cross-sections between 13 and 7 TeV. The same calculations are used to compute the energy distribution of neutrinos from charm decays in pA collisions, a key ingredient towards achieving a theoretically robust estimate of charm-induced backgrounds at neutrino telescopes., Comment: 43 pages, 21 figures. The LHCb collaboration has recently performed a first measurement of the angular production asymmetry in the distribution of beauty quarks and anti-quarks at a hadron collider. We calculate the corresponding standard model prediction for this asymmetry at fixed-order in perturbation theory. Our results show good agreement with the data, which is provided differentially for three bins in the invariant mass of the $b \bar b$ system. We also present similar predictions for both beauty-quark and charm-quark final states within the LHCb acceptance for a collision energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. We finally point out that a measurement of the ratio of the $b \bar b$ and $c \bar c$ cross sections may be useful for experimentally validating charm-tagging efficiencies., Comment: 4.5 pages + references, 1 figure, 4 tables

The unique forward LHCb acceptance opens the possibility for performing precision Standard Model (SM) processes in a kinematical regime beyond the reach of both ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this article we discuss the feasibility of performing $W^{\pm}j$ measurements with 14 TeV LHCb data, and find that the leptonic asymmetry at high pseudorapidity, with appropriate cuts on the associated jet, can provide a factor of three reduction on the $d$ quark PDF uncertainty in a region of Bjorken $x > 0.5$., Comment: 6 pages + references, 5 figures, matches PRD version. The forward LHCb acceptance offers the possibility of measuring the top-quark pair asymmetry in a kinematic region that does not receive overwhelming dilution from the symmetric gluon-fusion channel. To investigate this possibility, two leptonic final states are identified, and analysis strategies are proposed for each channel with 14~TeV data. Leading fixed-order predictions are then provided for the relevant leptonic asymmetry variables in each channel. If backgrounds can be experimentally constrained, statistically, a non-zero asymmetry is estimated to be observable beyond 5$\sigma$ confidence level with the full LHCb 14~TeV data., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables. The forward LHCb acceptance opens interesting possibilities of studying precision Standard Model hard processes in a kinematical region beyond the reach of ATLAS and CMS. In this paper we perform a feasibility study for cross-section measurements of top quark pairs with the LHCb detector, with an analysis of signal and background rates for selected final states, and determine the potential precision achievable at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 and 14~TeV. We then study the dependence of theoretical uncertainties on the pseudorapidity distribution of top quarks produced in pair production at NLO, and observe that a cross-section measurement at high pseudorapidity has enhanced sensitivity to probe the high-$x$ gluon PDF as compared to measurements in the central-region. Based on simulated pseudodata, the impact of a 14~TeV cross-section measurement on the gluon PDF and charge asymmetry is quantified., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables. A global fit to the recent B->K*mu+mu- data shows indications for a large new-physics contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semi-leptonic vector operator. In this article we consider a simple Z'-boson model of 3-3-1 type that can accommodate such an effect without violating any other constraint from quark-flavour physics. Implications for yet unobserved decay modes such as B->Xsnunubar and longstanding puzzles like B->piK are also discussed. The Z'-boson masses required to address the observed anomaly lie in the range of 7 TeV. Such heavy Z' bosons evade the existing bounds from precision data and direct searches, and will remain difficult to discover even at a high-luminosity LHC. Recently LHCb has announced a discrepancy of 3.7 sigma in one of the theoretically clean observables accessible through studies of angular correlations in B->K*mu+mu-. We point out that in the most minimal Z' setup that can address this anomaly there is a model-independent triple-correlation between new physics (NP) in B->K*mu+mu-, B_s-Bbar_s mixing, and non-unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. This triple-correlation can be cast into a simple analytic formula that relates the NP contribution DeltaC9 to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic vector operator to a shift in the mass difference DeltaM_{B_s} and a violation of |Vud|^2+ |Vus|^2+ |Vub|^2 = 1. In contrast to the individual observables the found relation depends only logarithmically on the Z' mass. We discuss two projects exploring the integration of thin CMOS pixel sensors in order to prototype ladders matching the geometry needed for the ILD vertex detector. The PLUME project has designed and fabricated full-size and fully functional double- sided layers which currently reach 0.6 % X0 and aim for 0.3 % X0 in mid-2012. Another approach, SERNWIETE, consists in wrapping the sensors in a polyimide-based micro-cable to obtain a supportless single-sided ladder with a material budget around 0.15 % X0. ISIS (In-situ Storage Imaging Sensor) is a novel CMOS sensor with multiple charge storage capability developed for the ILC vertex detector by the Linear Collider Flavour Identification (LCFI) collaboration. This paper reports test results for ISIS2, the second generation of ISIS sensors implemented in a 0.18 micron CMOS process.
