In the last five years, the controversy about whether or not gauge transformations can be empirically significant has intensified. On the one hand, Greaves and Wallace(2014) developed a framework according to which, under some circumstances, gauge transformations can be empirically significant, and Teh (2015) further supported this result by using the Constrained Hamiltonian formalism. On the other hand, Friederich (2015, 2016) claims to have proved that gauge transformation can never be empirically significant. In this paper, I accomplish two tasks: first, I show that Friederich’s proof is not valid, and that once it is corrected, it entails a result that is compatible with the treatments by Greaves and Wallace, and Teh. Second, I show that, despite criticism byBrading and Brown (2004) and Friederich (2015), t'Hooft's Beam-Splitter experimentis indeed a concrete realization of a case where a local gauge symmetry has empiri-cal significance. By shedding light on these two points, this paper shows that recent arguments that claim gauge transformations cannot be empirically significant are not satisfactory.

We provide evidence for partial deconfinement -- the deconfinement of a SU($M$) subgroup of the SU($N$) gauge group -- by using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We take matrix models as concrete examples. By appropriately fixing the gauge, we observe that the $M\times M$ submatrices deconfine. This gives direct evidence for partial deconfinement at strong coupling. We discuss the applications to QCD and holography., Comment: 49 pages, 24 figures, 3 tables. In the single-machine non-clairvoyant scheduling problem, the goal is to minimize the total completion time of jobs whose processing times are unknown a priori. We revisit this well-studied problem and consider the question of how to effectively use (possibly erroneous) predictions of the processing times. We study this question from ground zero by first asking what constitutes a good prediction; we then propose a new measure to gauge prediction quality and design scheduling algorithms with strong guarantees under this measure. Our approach to derive a prediction error measure based on natural desiderata could find applications for other online problems.

The axial capacity of light–gauge steel tube columns filled with concrete including recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates and recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) was investigated. A total of 51 specimens, including 6 bare steel tubes, 30 composite columns and 15 concrete-only columns were tested under uniaxial load. Fifteen concrete mixes were considered by replacing the weight of natural coarse aggregates (NA) with RCA and RAP at replacement levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%. In addition, RAP and RCA were combined in the same mixes with replacement levels of (1) 20% RAP and 80% RCA; (2) 40% RAP and 60% RCA; (3) 60% RAP and 40% RCA; and (4) 80% RAP and 20% RCA. Experimental results were analyzed by reporting the ultimate capacities and the patterns of failure. Moreover, the predictions of EUROCODE 4 (EC4) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) codes were checked. ABAQUS software was used to perform a finite element analysis (FEA) of the tested composite specimens. The results showed that using recycled aggregates decreased the carrying capacity of columns. Carrying capacity of light–gauge steel tubes filled with concrete including different combinations of RCA, NA and RAP aggregates can be conservatively predicted by the AISC and EC4 recommendations. Results of FEA showed a good agreement with the experimental results.

Pipeline inner inspection technology based on Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG), is the primary means for ensuring the safety of submarine pipelines. The dynamic characteristics of a PIG can change abruptly with the excitation of obstacles such as girth welds inside the pipeline, which would result in failure or inaccuracy of the inspection results. This study establishes a dynamic model of the PIG sealing disc based on Kelvin spring damping in the circumferentially confined space. The axial vibration differential equations of the PIG is examined in detail. MSC/ADAMS is used to conduct the dynamic simulation of the PIG at different motion velocities and center of mass positions while passing through the girth weld process. Results indicate that the axial vibration caused by the girth weld intensifies substantially as the speed of the PIG increases, while the pitch and vertical vibrations exhibit a significant decline with an increase in the motion velocity. The change in the PIG’s center of mass positions has little effect on its axial vibration, while the pitch and vertical vibration conditions are significantly different in the same circumstances.

This paper summarizes the submissions to a recently announced contact-mechanics modeling challenge. The task was to solve a typical, albeit mathematically fully defined problem on the adhesion between nominally flat surfaces. The surface topography of the rough, rigid substrate, the elastic properties of the indenter, as well as the short-range adhesion between indenter and substrate, were specified so that diverse quantities of interest, e.g., the distribution of interfacial stresses at a given load or the mean gap as a function of load, could be computed and compared to a reference solution. Many different solution strategies were pursued, ranging from traditional asperity-based models via Persson theory and brute-force computational approaches, to real-laboratory experiments and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of a model, in which the original assignment was scaled down to the atomistic scale. While each submission contained satisfying answers for at least a subset of the posed questions, efficiency, versatility, and accuracy differed between methods, the more precise methods being, in general, computationally more complex. The aim of this paper is to provide both theorists and experimentalists with benchmarks to decide which method is the most appropriate for a particular application and to gauge the errors associated with each one.

In the cylindrical grinding process, the residual grinding allowance is left owing to the rubbing of the abrasive grains and the elastic deformation of the grinding system caused by the large normal grinding force. Therefore, a sizing gauge is generally used to monitor the workpiece diameter during the process. However, the sizing gauge disturbs the grinding operations, such as loading and unloading the workpiece. In this study, a new method for estimating the grinding stock of a ground workpiece is proposed. In the proposed method, the grinding stock can be estimated without a sizing gauge. The removed volume of the workpiece can be calculated from the power consumption of the wheel motor, which is easily measured. Before the grinding experiments, the specific grinding energy is determined from several grinding results. During the grinding process, the grinding stock of the ground workpiece was estimated using the determined specific grinding energy. It was confirmed that the grinding stock could be accurately estimated under several grinding conditions.

The Present Study focuses to gauge the performance of Steel fibre reinforced Self compacting concrete designed with target strength of 30 N/mm2. The specimen were prepared by using recycled aggregates as a partial replacement of coarse aggregates with varying percentage of 10, 30 and 50 percent. Thereafter, casted samples were tested for fresh concrete properties such as V-funnel, L-box and U-box. The compressive strength test and Split Tensile tests were performed to determine the effect of hardened concrete using recycled aggregates and steel fibre.

The main purpose of this study is to optimize strain gauge mounting cross section length of strain gage (gauge) balance component to measure forces and moments experienced by test models. This is done by using three dimensional models of balance component using version NX 10.0 unigraphics software and the results are analysed using high- fidelity finite element modelling altair hyperworks software version13.0 and optistruct solver. It may be noted that a maximum diameter of 25 mm and 200 mm length is permitted for strain gauge balance component design. The material used for calculation of the balance component is maraging C-250 steel with maximum yield stress of 1655 N/mm2. It is very important that designer is supposed to choose the strain gauge mounting cross section length by considering the limits of the design. Distance between front and aft loading location is specifically 100 mm. The present work involves design of cross sectional length for wind tunnel integral strain gauge balance component with minimum factor of safety of 2.5, maximum deflection of 1.2 mm and maximum stress 662 N/mm2 which is permitted.

The capacity of combined gauge-satellite precipitation estimates largely depends on the characteristics of the input data such as the number, location and reliability of rain gauges, and satellite-derived precipitation quality. The objective of this study is to examine the influence of rain gauge network configuration including density and spatial distribution on the performance of the gauge-satellite merging estimation at monthly and ten-day temporal scales. Dense rain gauge observations and satellite-derived precipitation data (i.e., TMPA 3B42 Version 7 and Version 06 IMERG Final Run) in two provinces of China are used. A two-stage downscaling-integration approach is applied in the gauge-satellite precipitation estimation. Various scenarios of rain gauge density and combination are designed and their corresponding merged precipitation estimates are evaluated using statistical indices. The merged results using the TMPA and IMERG precipitation product, respectively, are compared. The results show that: 1) the influence of rain gauge network configuration on the gauge-satellite merged precipitation estimates gradually decreases with the increase in rain gauge density, and the gauge-satellite merged precipitation estimates are more sensitive to the rain gauge network density in wet season and ten-day temporal scale than in dry season and monthly scale, respectively and 2) the merged precipitation estimation using the IMERG precipitation data generally outperforms the estimation using TMPA precipitation data in the low gauge density scenarios, and the gap decreases with the increase in the rain gauge network density. In the areas with sparse rain gauges, improving the quality of satellite precipitation data would significantly improve the performance of the gauge-satellite merging estimation.

In this research, an experimental and numerical investigation on the influence of strengthening steel square hollow sections (SHS) subjected to pure torsion with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) wraps. CFRP was widely used to strengthen steel members in bending and compression. Experimental tests were conducted on 8 light-gauged steel SHS having two different cross-sections, SHS 48 × 2 mm, SHS 80 × 2 mm. Four strengthening configurations were tested; namely, Spiral, Reverse, Spiral-Reverse, and Reverse-Spiral. All specimens were wrapped with an orientation angle 45° with respect to the longitudinal axes of the specimen. Results showed that Spiral-Reverse and Reverse-Spiral configurations offered higher capacity enhancement. Strengthened specimens with these configurations reached up to 96% increase in their torsional capacity with respect to the control bare specimen. Spiral and Reverse configurations showed lower torsional capacity enhancement with a maximum percentage of 47%. Finite element models were constructed to simulate the tested specimens. The general purpose finite element program ANSYS was used to establish a numerical model for strengthened SHS incorporating geometric and material non-linearity. The numerical solution was essentially non-linear static analysis at which the load was applied incrementally using the arc-length method. The limit load of strengthened SHS was defined by the load at which the total strain energy reached 1.2 times that of respective bare SHS as per experimental results obtained herein. The proposed numerical model provided compatible results with test results obtained herein and previous literature.

Purpose A harvesting robot is developed as part of kiwifruit industry automation in New Zealand. This kiwifruit harvester is currently not economically viable, as it drops and damages too many kiwifruit in the harvesting task due to the positional inaccuracy of the gripper. This is due to the difficulties in measuring the exact effective dimensions of the gripper from the manipulator. The purpose of this study is to obtain the effective gripper dimensions using kinematic calibration procedures. Design/methodology/approach A setup of a constraint plate with a dial gauge is proposed to acquire the calibration data. The constraint plate is positioned above the robot. The data is obtained by using a dial gauge and a permanent marker. The effective dimensions of the gripper are used as error parameters in the calibration process. Calibration is exercised by minimizing the difference between target positions and measured positions iteratively. Findings The robot with the obtained effective dimensions is tested in the field. It is found that the fruit drops due to positional inaccuracy of the gripper are greatly reduced after calibration. Practical implications The kiwifruit industry in New Zealand is growing rapidly and announced plans in 2017 to double global sales by 2025. This growth will put extra pressure on the labour supply for harvesting. Furthermore, the Covid pandemic and resulting border restrictions have dramatically reduced seasonal imported labour availability. A robotic system is a potential solution to address the labour shortages for harvesting kiwifruit. Originality/value For kiwifruit harvesting, the picking envelope is well above the robot; the experimental data points obtained by placing a constraint plate above the robot are at similar positions to the target positions of kiwifruit. Using this set of data points for calibration yields a good effect of obtaining the effective dimension of the gripper, which reduces the positional inaccuracy as shown in the field test results.

A physical assessment of the lateral gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet transistor (NSFET) at the G40M16 node (gate length = 12 nm projected for 2028) of the newly defined beyond-Moore International Roadmap for Devices and Systems [~5 nm node of the predecessor International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS)], supported by 3-D numerical device simulations and based on a proposed per-footprint scheme, is presented. The traditional evaluation scheme to gauge the performance of the transistor ``per effective channel width'' is shown to be improper due to pervasive bulk inversion. Bulk inversion, along the width of the nanosheet and at its ends, obfuscates the dependence of current on sheet/channel width and undermines the presumed added benefit of short-channel effect (SCE) control in the GAA device. The NSFET provides a flexible sheet width, as opposed to that of the FinFET with discrete fins, but the allowed range of sheet width is limited due to significant parasitic capacitance at a relatively narrow width and degraded SCE control and increased resistance for desired wide width. Furthermore, the nanosheet (NS) device density is undermined at a narrow width, especially for decreasing pitch. The FinFET is shown to be a favorable alternative to the NSFET even at the G40M16 node.

Directional spreading of ocean waves plays an important role in various aspects of ocean engineering, such as wave-induced loads, nonlinear wave evolution, and wave breaking. Wave following buoys, which are widely deployed across the oceans, offer the potential to measure directional wave properties. To assess the accuracy of directional spreading estimates made using buoy measurements, we compared estimates based on experimentally obtained buoy and wave gauge measurements, first presented in McAllister and van den Bremer (J Phys Oceanogr 50:399–414, 2020) Buoy and gauge measurements were recorded at the same locations and in identical sea states, allowing for a like-for-like comparison. We examine experiments with both following (unimodal in direction) and crossing (bimodal in direction) sea states. In addition to this, we use synthetic wave data to investigate the effects of wave generation and nonlinearity on spreading estimates. Our results show that while directional estimates produced using buoy measurements are reasonably accurate in following sea states, they struggle to identify distinct directional peaks in crossing sea states. We find that spreading estimates made using buoy measurements tend to underestimate the degree of directional spreading by approximately $$9-14\%$$ 9 - 14 % in following sea states, which is most apparent in narrowly spread conditions.

This article discusses the energy-power parameters of forming a pipe billet in the course of continuous molding. In addition, it expounds on the calibration of a roll tool for pipe Dt × St = 50 × 1.5 mm of strength class K52. First, the pipe billet’s deformation state and longitudinal deformation were determined, with the latter ranging from 0.18–0.26 %, which is considered a permissible value. Moreover, the contact surface of the pipe billet and the roll tool were estimated for gauge study. The effective diameters were then calculated for all driven forming rolls. Various options for the location of the effective diameters are described, which divide the contact surfaces into lead and lag zones. A method was then proposed for determining the lead and lag zones and the total pulling forces on the forming mill gauges. Depending on the location of the effective diameter for both upper and lower roll, pulling force distribution graphs were plotted. Finally, the schemes of distribution of energy-power parameters of the deformation process of a pipe billet were determined, which facilitated the rational selection of parameters for a specific pipe grade.

This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of the Maxwell–Schrödinger system under the temporal gauge, which describes light–matter interactions. We first propose a semidiscrete finite element scheme for the system and establish stability estimates for the finite element solution. Due to the lack of control over its divergence we cannot get $\textbf{H}^{1}$$a \;priori$ estimates for the vector potential, making it difficult to obtain error estimates by usual techniques. We apply an exhaustion argument to overcome this difficulty and derive error estimates for the finite element approximation. An energy-conserving time-stepping scheme is proposed to solve the semidiscrete system.

The finite-temperature behaviour of ghost and gluon propagators is investigated within an approach based on the rainbow truncated Dyson–Schwinger equations in Landau gauge. In Euclidean space, within the Matsubara imaginary-time formalism, the gluon propagator is not longer a O(4) symmetric function and possesses a discrete spectrum of the fourth momentum component. This leads to a different treatment of the transversal and longitudinal (with respect to the heat bath) parts of the propagator. Correspondingly, the gluon Dyson–Schwinger equation splits also into two parts. The resulting system of coupled equations is considered within the rainbow approximation and solved numerically. The solutions for the ghost and gluon propagators are obtained as a function of temperature T, Matsubara frequency Ωn and three-momentum squared k2. The effective parameters of the approach are taken from our previous fit of the corresponding Dyson–Schwinger solution to the lattice QCD data at zero temperature. It is found that, for zero Matsubara frequency, the dependence of the ghost and gluon dressing functions on k2 are not sensitive to the temperature T, while at k2 = 0 their dependence on T is quite strong. Dependence on the Matsubara frequency Ωn is investigated as well.

With the availability of satellite-based precipitation products, it is pertinent to develop methods to use these data products to design hydraulic structures. The satellite precipitation products play a vital role in ungauged locations or when information is required on a catchment scale. Before such applications, the accuracy and uncertainty associated with the products have to be investigated. In this study, we develop a framework that includes bias correction for the development of robust IDF curves. The framework is applied to a small region in the southeastern part of India, and the IDF curves were evaluated using the gauge data at nine locations. This study compares Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curves using the recent precipitation product Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM-IMERG V6) with ground-based gauge data. Results show that the spatial correlation between the satellite IDF and the gauge-based IDF improves significantly after bias correction, and the value is as high as 0.75 for 2–10 year return period. The bias between the satellite IDF and gauge IDF is low in the north part of the study region and is high in the southeastern part, prone to extreme rainfall. Further, a significant percentage of the satellite-based IDFs (with and without bias correction) lie inside the confidence interval of the gauge-based data. Thus, GPM V6 data have the potential to be used as an alternate data source for IDF generation in developing countries.

A coupling dynamic model of a subway train and an embedded track is established to study the safety limits of track irregularities. The simulated vehicle system was a 74-degrees of freedom multi-rigid body model, and the rail was a Timoshenko beam. The slab was a three-dimensional solid finite element model. The sensitive wavelength irregularity was first studied, and then the safety limit of the sensitive wavelength was analyzed. The wheel-rail lateral force exhibited a substantial effect on the track alignment and gauge irregularity safety limit. The wheel-rail vertical force and the rate of wheel load reduction significantly affected the height and cross-level irregularity safety limit. The results demonstrate that the safety limits of the alignment, gauge, height, and cross-level embedded track geometric irregularity are 5.3 mm, [− 10.5, 8] mm, 5.6 mm, and 6 mm, respectively.

We present an extension to the gauge-invariant formulation of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, which allows its application to symmetric teleparallel gravity theories. In its original formulation, the gauge-invariant PPN formalism makes use of a gauge-invariant perturbative expansion of tensor fields; however, one of the fundamental gravitational field variables in symmetric teleparallel gravity theories is a flat, torsion-free connection, hence not a tensor field. Since connections transform differently from tensor fields under diffeomorphisms, we introduce here an adapted notion of gauge-invariant perturbation variables for the symmetric teleparallel connection, and show how the lowest order terms can be expressed in terms of the common PPN potentials., Paper presented at the Fourth Zeldovich meeting, an international conference in honor of Ya. We investigate the NSVZ relations for ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories with multiple gauge couplings. As examples, we consider MSSM and the flipped $SU(5)$ model, for which they easily reproduce the results for the two-loop $\beta$-functions. For ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD interacting with the Abelian gauge superfield we demonstrate that the NSVZ-like equation for the Adler $D$-function follows from the NSVZ relations. Also we derive all-loop equations describing how the NSVZ equations for theories with multiple gauge couplings change under finite renormalizations. They allow describing a continuous set of NSVZ schemes in which the exact NSVZ $\beta$-functions are valid for all gauge coupling constants. Very likely, this class includes the HD+MSL scheme, which is obtained if a theory is regularized by Higher covariant Derivatives and divergences are removed by Minimal Subtractions of Logarithms. That is why we also discuss how one can construct the higher derivative regularization for theories with multiple gauge couplings. Presumably, this regularization allows to derive the NSVZ equations for such theories in all loops. In this paper we make the first step of this derivation, namely, the NSVZ equations for theories with multiple gauge couplings are rewritten in a new form which relates the $\beta$-functions to the anomalous dimensions of the quantum gauge superfields, of the Faddeev--Popov ghosts, and of the matter superfields. The equivalence of this new form to the original NSVZ relations follows from the extension of the non-renormalization theorem for the triple gauge-ghost vertices, which is also derived in this paper., Comment: 39 pages

As part of a research on structural response of modular buildings and assemblages, this experimental study investigates the effects of gypsum sheathed light-gauge steel stud walls on the natural dynamic characteristics of modular steel frames. A full-scale volumetric steel module is instrumented with sensitive accelerometers connected to a data acquisition system, to study the effects of different infill wall configurations. To this end, the module’s sides are covered with bare light gauge steel frames and then different configurations and arrangements of gypsum plasterboard linings. The module’s acceleration responses are recorded during free and ambient vibration tests for each case. Then the operational modal analysis is conducted on the recorded data using output-only algorithms to extract the main dynamic characteristics of the steel module, including natural frequencies, mode shapes, and modal damping ratios. The contribution of different configurations and arrangements of infill walls to the response are examined and their effects are discussed. It is observed that the infill walls can change the dynamic characteristics of the modular steel frame more than the level suggested by the design specifications, such as 30–50% reduction by ASCE7-16.

We analyse the physical constraints of the higher derivative Chern–Simons gauge model by means of Faddeev–Jackiw symplectic approach in the first-order formalism. Within such framework, we systematically determine the zero-mode structure of the corresponding symplectic matrix. In addition, we calculate the Faddeev–Jackiw quantum brackets by choosing appropriate gauge-fixing conditions and evaluate the determinant of the non-singular symplectic matrix as well as the transition-amplitude. Finally, we present a detailed Hamiltonian analysis using Dirac–Bergmann algorithm method and show that the Dirac brackets coincide with the FJ brackets when all the second-class constraints are treated as zero equations.

We consider the Higgs branch of 5d fixed points engineered using brane webs with an O7$^+$-plane. We use the brane construction to propose a set of rules to extract the corresponding magnetic quivers. Such magnetic quivers are generically framed non-simply-laced quivers containing unitary as well as special unitary gauge nodes. We compute the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the proposed magnetic quivers. In some specific cases, an alternative magnetic quiver can be obtained either using an ordinary brane web or a brane web with an O5-plane. In this article, we report a wafer-level packaged Pirani vacuum gauge using the proprietary InvenSense CMOS MEMS technology. The micro Pirani vacuum gauge features three serpentine-shaped molybdenum thermistors on the suspended silicon-on-insulator (SOI) bridges, while the wiring gap of each serpentine-shaped silicon microbridge is 1.6 ${ {\mu }}\text{m}$ . For the vacuum range of $5\times 10^{-{4}}$ –760 Torr, the CMOS MEMS Pirani gauge configured with a constant temperature interface circuit achieves a sensitivity of 0.414 V/Torr in a very fine vacuum regime, while its heating power is less than 21.3 mW. Moreover, the measured output of the micro Pirani gauge shows good agreement with a semi-empirical model, while the model predicts that the proposed Pirani gauge can measure a vacuum pressure as low as $2.6\times 10^{-{4}}$ Torr. The performance achieved by this Pirani vacuum gauge combined with its high level of integration makes it a promising Internet of Things (IoT) sensing node for vacuum monitoring in the industry.

The mechanical properties of root system play an important role in soil reinforcement by plants. Root tensile properties are affected by many factors. It is necessary to explore the mechanical properties of root system and the influencing factors. In this study, tensile tests were conducted on roots of Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad and Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb to study root tensile properties, including maximum tensile force, tensile strength and elastic modulus under the three factors, gauge length (50, 100, 150, and 200 mm), root spacing (0, 1, and 2 cm) and root number (single root, double roots, and triple roots). The results showed that the maximum tensile force, tensile strength, and elastic modulus of the roots decreased with increasing gauge length in power functions. Under 100 mm gauge length, the maximum tensile force, tensile strength and elastic modulus decreased with increasing root spacing, but the effect of root spacing considered in this study on the maximum tensile force and tensile strength was not significant. Besides, with increasing root number, the maximum tensile force increased, tensile strength, and elastic modulus decreased. These findings stretched our understanding of the relationship between gauge length, root spacing and root number on root tensile characteristics, and provided the necessary data basis for root tensile properties and soil reinforcement by plants.

Precipitation is spatially and temporally unevenly distributed. The unevenness of precipitation is crucial for climate change, as well as for water resource management, environmental risk reduction and industrial/agricultural production. In this study, gauge observations and eight reanalysis products are used to examine the unevenness of precipitation from 1979 to 2018 over China. The results show that all the reanalysis datasets can reproduce the spatial pattern of the annual number of wet days and precipitation intensity, as shown in the observations; however, most reanalyses overestimate the former and underestimate the latter. The mean cumulative fractions of the precipitation amount on the wettest 1, 5, and 10 days to annual total are approximately 9.3%, 29.8% and 45.1% in the gauge observations, and are 6.6%±0.8%, 22.1%±2.5% and 34.3%±3.5% in the reanalyses. The mean cumulative fractions of precipitation amount on the wettest 1, 5, and 10 days to annual total displays a small negative trend based on gauge observations over China (-0.06%/decade, -0.10%/decade and -0.10%/decade, respectively), but are positive and stronger in the eight current reanalyses (0.08% ± 0.08%/decade, 0.25%±0.08%/decade and 0.35%±0.10%/decade). The Japanese 55-year reanalysis is the best in quantifying the annual variability of the cumulative fractions of precipitation on the wettest 1, 5, and 10 days over China, while the ERA-Interim is the best in reflecting their trends. The reanalyses agree best with the observations in reflecting cumulative fractions of precipitation in the Yangtze River Basin and the worst in the Northwest China.

The effective sectional area concept was adopted to conduct the analysis of cold-formed Tension members. ANSYS software was utilized to simulate the behavior of cold-formed steel angle under tension load. The paper describes the results from a finite element investigation into the load capacity tension members of single angle sections of 1.5,.1.6,2 3,4 mm and double angles sections of 2mm under plain (without Lipped) and with Lipped conditions subjected to tension. Numerical investigations were carried out using finite element software ANSYS. In order to simulate the experimental behavior using the analytical model, material non-linearity’s and geometric nonlinearity’s were incorporated. The ultimate strength for cross – sectional dimensions with varying eccentricity loads under tension loading conditions was achieved through the ANSYS 15.0 workbench. In the numerical investigation, 180 specimens were modeled on tensioning elements attached to bolts. To find equivalent stress, equivalent elastic strain and total deformation of single and double-angle sections were investigated.

Based on the studies of stress­strain metal formation during railway rails rolling in roughing stands of a universal rail­and­beam mill, carried out using the DEFORM­3D software package, the authors have determined the features of distribution of the Cockcroft­Latham criterion over the cross­section of the rolled stock of various shapes. An extremely uneven distribution of the Cockcroft­Latham criterion over the roll section has been established. According to the data obtained, values of the specifed criterion are minimal in the axial zone, and in the near­surface layers the greatest value of the Cockcroft­Latham criterion and, accordingly, the highest probability of defects formation occur near the gauge vertical axis. In gauges of complex shape (“trapezium”, “recumbent trapezium”, rail gauges), the authors have revealed the presence of local zones with maximum Cockcroft­Latham criterion, located in the places where the foot of the rail profle is formed. And rolling in gauge of the “trapezium” type is marked by the presence of such a zone in the near­surface area near the gauge vertical axis. Within the framework of determining formation regularities of the diagram of metal stress­strain state at the initial stage of rail rolling, direct relationship was established between the uneven temperature distribution over the section of rolling and the values (maximum and average over the section) of the Cockcroft­Latham criterion. At the same time, it was shown that uneven temperature distribution over the cross­section of the roll tends to decrease with an increase in the coefcients of extracts along the passes and increase in tilting frequency, regardless of the shape of the used gauges. For gauges of complex shape, in addition to the listed parameters, an increase in similarity of shape of the roll and gauge used also has a signifcant effect on reducing temperature inhomogeneity. Based on the results of theoretical studies, a new mode of railway rails rolling has been developed. Its pilot testing in the conditions of a universal rail­and­beam mill of JSC “EVRAZ ZSMK” has shown a decrease in rail rejection by 0.78 % compared to the previously used rolling mode.

In this paper, a second order Gauge Uzawa scheme for the governing equations of an incompressible micropolar fluid flow is introduced and analyzed. The derivation of this scheme is obtained using the second order backward difference approximation. Later, the unconditional stability of the GUM scheme for the micropolar equations will be shown. Then, an a priori error estimate is established to prove the convergence. Finally, we present some numerical simulations that confirm the theoretical results.

Motivated by the appearance of fractional powers of line bundles in studies of vector-like spectra in 4d F-theory compactifications, we analyze the structure and origin of these bundles. Fractional powers of line bundles are also known as root bundles and can be thought of as generalizations of spin bundles. We explain how these root bundles are linked to inequivalent F-theory gauge potentials of a $G_4$-flux. While this observation is interesting in its own right, it is particularly valuable for F-theory Standard Model constructions. In aiming for MSSMs, it is desired to argue for the absence of vector-like exotics. We work out the root bundle constraints on all matter curves in the largest class of currently-known F-theory Standard Model constructions without chiral exotics and gauge coupling unification. On each matter curve, we conduct a systematic "bottom"-analysis of all solutions to the root bundle constraints and all spin bundles. Thereby, we derive a lower bound for the number of combinations of root bundles and spin bundles whose cohomologies satisfy the physical demand of absence of vector-like pairs. On a technical level, this systematic study is achieved by a well-known diagrammatic description of root bundles on nodal curves. We extend this description by a counting procedure, which determines the cohomologies of so-called limit root bundles on full blow-ups of nodal curves. In transient stability simulators such as PSS/E, the bus frequency is estimated using a window of (positive-sequence) phasor angle measurements. A digital filter is often used to account for the filtering effect in actual measurement devices and to eliminate sudden changes during frequency computations. Although transient stability simulators label the filtered angle derivative as the “frequency,” the frequency provided by such programs does not match actual measurements reported by phasor measurement units (PMUs), which makes it difficult to gauge the validity of studies (e.g., wide-area event detection and control applications) that are based on such simulations. In this paper, we implement a frequency computation method directly using positive phasor angles provided by simulators. The proposed method is tested on two systems extensively and validated against the measurements of an actual PMU. The improved frequency measurements closely match PMU responses. Cross-validation results also suggest the method may be used for other systems without conducting full time-domain simulations.

Motivated by applications to soft supersymmetry breaking, we revisit the expansion of the Seiberg-Witten solution around the multi-monopole point on the Coulomb branch of pure SU(N) $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions. At this point N − 1 mutually local magnetic monopoles become massless simultaneously, and in a suitable duality frame the gauge couplings logarithmically run to zero. We explicitly calculate the leading threshold corrections to this logarithmic running from the Seiberg-Witten solution by adapting a method previously introduced by D’Hoker and Phong. We compare our computation to existing results in the literature; this includes results specific to SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories, the large-N results of Douglas and Shenker, as well as results obtained by appealing to integrable systems or topological strings. We find broad agreement, while also clarifying some lingering inconsistencies. Finally, we explicitly extend the results of Douglas and Shenker to finite N , finding exact agreement with our first calculation.

This paper is concerned with the construction of the fifth-order inhomogeneous Heisenberg supermagnetic models. Moreover, the Lax representations of the models are presented. By means of the gauge transformation, we establish their gauge equivalent equations with different quadratic constraints, i.e., the super and fermionic fifth-order inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations, respectively. In addition, we investigate their Lax representations and Bäcklund transformations from which the solutions of the super integrable systems have been discussed.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the accuracy of six depth gauges used in three tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) plate holes. STUDY DESIGN Ex vivo experimental study. ANIMALS AND SAMPLE POPULATION Cadaveric canine limbs (n = 10), one 25-mm-thick wood board, and one 33.8-mm-diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe. METHODS A TPLO was performed on 10 canine cadaveric pelvic limbs. Three 3.5-mm plate holes were filled with screws. The remaining three plate holes: a compression hole, a combination compression-locking hole, and a stacked combination compression-locking hole were measured by three observers using six commercial depth gauges and using a micrometer as gold standard. The process was repeated on one wood board and one PVC pipe. RESULTS Bone measurements collected using two depth gauges with base diameter 5.5 mm (p ranging from < .001 to .038). Mean depth gauge measurements were smaller than micrometer measurements by 2.20 mm for the compression hole, 0.82 mm for the combination hole, and 3.57 mm for the stacked combination hole. Measurement differences among depth gauges were also present for wood board and PVC pipe measurements. Bone measurement variability between depth gauges was less for the combination and compression holes than for the stacked combination hole. CONCLUSION Depth gauges lacked accuracy. Measurements differed among gauges and measurement variability varied based on plate hole geometry. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Depth gauge measurement accuracy varies based on measuring devices and on 3.5-mm plate hole geometry.

We study the stability and spectrum of BPS states in ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity. We find evidence, and prove for a large class of cases, that BPS stability exhibits a certain filtration which is partially independent of the value of the gauge couplings. Specifically, for any perturbative value of any gauge coupling $g \ll 1$, a BPS state can only decay to some constituents if those constituents do not become infinitely heavier than it in the vanishing coupling limit $g \rightarrow 0$. This stability filtration can be mathematically formulated in terms of the monodromy weight filtration of the limiting mixed Hodge structure associated to the vanishing coupling limit. We present a simple argument which seems to favor, when applied to a large class of strongly-coupled chiral gauge theories, a dynamical-Higgs-phase scenario, characterized by certain bifermion condensates. Flavor symmetric confining vacua described in the infrared by a set of baryonlike massless composite fermions saturating the conventional 't Hooft anomaly matching equations, appear instead disfavored. Our basic criterion is that it should be possible to write a strong-anomaly effective action, analogous to the one used in QCD to describe the solution of the $U(1)_A$ problem in the low-energy effective action, by using the low-energy degrees of freedom in the hypothesized infrared theory. We also comment on some well-known ideas such as the complementarity and the large $N$ planar dominance in the context of these chiral gauge theories.Some striking analogies and contrasts between the massless QCD and chiral gauge theories seem to emerge from this discussion., Comment: 43 pages, 2 figures

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present a methodology to evaluate the accuracy of intraoral scanners (IOS) used in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A specific feature-based gauge was designed, manufactured, and measured in a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), obtaining reference distances and angles. Then, 10 scans were taken by an IOS with the gauge in the patient's mouth and from the obtained stereolithography (STL) files, a total of 40 distances and 150 angles were measured and compared with the gauge's reference values. In order to provide a comparison, there were defined distance and angle groups in accordance with the increasing scanning area: from a short span area to a complete-arch scanning extension. Data was analyzed using software for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Deviations in measured distances showed that accuracy worsened as the scanning area increased: trueness varied from 0.018 ± 0.021 mm in a distance equivalent to the space spanning a four-unit bridge to 0.106 ± 0.08 mm in a space equivalent to a complete arch. Precision ranged from 0.015 ± 0.03 mm to 0.077 ± 0.073 mm in the same two areas. When analyzing angles, deviations did not show such a worsening pattern. In addition, deviations in angle measurement values were low and there were no calculated significant differences among angle groups. CONCLUSION: Currently, there is no standardized procedure to assess the accuracy of IOS in vivo, and the results show that the proposed methodology can contribute to this purpose. The deviations measured in the study show a worsening accuracy when increasing the length of the scanning area.

This study investigates the role of strong seismic motions on the dynamic responses of high CFRDs through elastoplastic analysis. Damage measures (DMs) including vertical and horizontal displacements, plastic shear strain, as well as a face-slab damage index are selected to gauge the deformation, stability of the dam slope and the anti-seepage ability of the face slab, respectively. The selected DMs are key to the safety of high CFRDs. A group of 35 as-recorded ground motions with a wide range of durations are modified to conform to a 5% damped target spectrum are used as input motions for dynamic analysis. A comprehensive understanding of the effects of ground motion duration is obtained through a tri-fold analysis of the ground motion records, the nonlinear dynamic response of CFRDs and the statistics of the results. The definitions of significant duration, bracketed duration and uniform duration, each with consideration to two different thresholds, are selected to characterize strong motion durations. The results suggests that significant duration is the most useful indicator for seismic assessment of high CFRDs and for evaluating the effects of the duration of an earthquake on the integrity of high CFRDs.

We review recent advances in the construction of models of compositeness using four-dimensional gauge theories with fermionic matter. We discuss the group theory data needed to fulfill the basic phenomenological requirements and we touch upon the main predictions of these constructions.

We propose a novel gauge fluid solver based on Clebsch wave functions to solve incompressible fluid equations. Our method combines the expressive power of Clebsch wave functions to represent coherent vortical structures and the generality of gauge methods to accommodate a broad array of fluid phenomena. By evolving a transformed wave function as the system's gauge variable enhanced by an additional projection step to enforce pressure jumps on the free boundaries, our method can significantly improve the vorticity generation and preservation ability for a broad range of gaseous and liquid phenomena. Our approach can be easily implemented by modifying a standard grid-based fluid simulator. It can be used to solve various fluid dynamics, including complex vortex filament dynamics, fluids with different obstacles, and surface-tension flow.

In industrial manufacturing of bright steel rods, one important quality factor is the straightness or straightness deviation. Depending on the application, deviations of less than 0.1 mm per meter rod length are desired and can be reached with state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment. Such high-quality requirements can only be guaranteed with continuous quality control. Manual straightness measurements conducted offline using a dial gauge provide accurate results on single positions of the rod. We propose a contactless, optical measurement technique based on laser scanning which has the potential to be used inline during production to inspect all rods over the entire length. Only for calibration of the system the rod needs to be turned around its axis. For the measurement of straightness deviation, it is not required to turn the rod. The method is based on evaluating the intensity signal of the reflected laser radiation against the scan angle. It is shown that in combination with an accurate calibration, this signal can be used to determine the rod’s deviation from a straight rod. We explain the measurement and calibration principle as well as data evaluation. We present the experimental setup and first measurement results on a single position on several samples. For a homogeneous sample surface and neglecting laser drift, accuracy and precision were determined to be in the range of 10–20 μm. We discuss the working principle of a potential inline system.

Background Surface roughness has a significant effect on leaf wettability. Consequently, it influences the efficiency and effectiveness of pesticide application. Therefore, roughness measurement of leaf surface offers support to the relevant research efforts. To characterize surface roughness, the prevailing methods have drawn support from large equipment that often come with high costs and poor portability, which is not suitable for field measurement. Additionally, such equipment may even suffer from inherent drawbacks like the absence of relationship between pixel intensity and corresponding height for scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results An imaging system with variable object distance was created to capture images of plant leaves, and a method based on shape from focus (SFF) was proposed. The given space-variantly blurred images were processed with the proposed algorithm to obtain the surface roughness of plant leaves. The algorithm improves the current SFF method through image alignment, focus distortion correction, and the introduction of NaN values that allows it to be applied for precise 3d-reconstruction and small-scale surface roughness measurement. Conclusion Compared with methods that rely on optical three-dimensional interference microscope, the method proposed in this paper preserves the overall topography of leaf surface, and achieves superior cost performance at the same time. It is clear from experiments on standard gauge blocks that the RMSE of step was approximately 4.44 µm. Furthermore, according to the Friedman/Nemenyi test, the focus measure operator SML was expected to demonstrate the best performance.
