1. Valley-spin polarization at zero magnetic field induced by strong hole-hole interactions in monolayer WSe$_2$

Abstract

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as prominent candidates to explore the complex interplay between the spin and the valleys degrees of freedom. The strong spin-orbit interaction and broken inversion symmetry within these materials lead to the spin-valley locking effect, in which carriers occupying the K and K' valleys of the reciprocal space must have opposite spin depending on which valley they reside. This effect is particularly strong for holes due to a larger spin-orbit gap in the valence band. By reducing the dimensionality of a monolayer of tungsten diselenide to 1D via electrostatic confinement, we demonstrate that spin-valley locking in combination with strong hole-hole interactions lead to a ferromagnetic state in which hole transport through the 1D system is spin-valley polarized, even without an applied magnetic field, and that the persistence of this spin-valley polarized configuration can be tuned by a global back-gate. This observation opens the possibility of implementing a robust and stable valley polarized system, essential for valleytronic applications.

Abstract

We present a theory of interacting valence holes in a gate-defined one-dimensional quantum channel in a single layer of a transition metal dichalcogenide material WSe$_2$. Based on a microscopic atomistic tight-binding model and Hartree-Fock and exact configuration-interaction tools we demonstrate the possibility of symmetry-broken valley polarized states for strongly interacting holes. The interplay between interactions, perpendicular magnetic field, and the lateral confinement asymmetry together with the strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling present in WSe$_2$ material is analyzed, and its impact on valley polarization is discussed. For weaker interactions, an investigation of the pair correlation function reveals a valley-antiferromagnetic phase. For low hole densities, a formation of a zigzag Wigner crystal phase is predicted. The impact of various hole liquid phases on transport in a high mobility quasi-one dimensional channel is discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

Abstract

This study presents a machine-learning-based procedure to automate the charge tuning of semiconductor spin qubits with minimal human intervention, addressing one of the significant challenges in scaling up quantum dot technologies. This method exploits artificial neural networks to identify noisy transition lines in stability diagrams, guiding a robust exploration strategy leveraging neural networks' uncertainty estimations. Tested across three distinct offline experimental datasets representing different single quantum dot technologies, the approach achieves over 99% tuning success rate in optimal cases, where more than 10% of the success is directly attributable to uncertainty exploitation. The challenging constraints of small training sets containing high diagram-to-diagram variability allowed us to evaluate the capabilities and limits of the proposed procedure., Comment: 12 pages (main) + 14 pages (supplementary)

Abstract

We study the semigroups of random Schr\"odinger operators of the form $\widehat{H}f=-\frac12f''+(V+\xi)f$, where $f:I\to\mathbb F^r$ ($\mathbb F=\mathbb R,\mathbb C,\mathbb H$) are vector-valued functions on a possibly infinite interval $I\subset\mathbb R$ that satisfy a mix of Robin and Dirichlet boundary conditions, $V$ is a deterministic diagonal potential with power-law growth at infinity, and $\xi$ is a matrix white noise. Our main result consists of Feynman-Kac formulas for trace moments of the form $\mathbf E[\prod_{k=1}^n\mathrm{Tr}[\mathrm e^{-t_k\widehat{H}}]]$ ($n\in\mathbb N$, $t_k>0$). One notable example covered by our main result consists of the multivariate stochastic Airy operator (SAO) of Bloemendal and Vir\'ag (Ann. Probab., 44(4):2726-2769, 2016), which characterizes the soft-edge eigenvalue fluctuations of critical rank-$r$ spiked Wishart and GO/U/SE random matrices. As a corollary of our main result, we prove that if $V$'s growth is at least linear (this includes the multivariate SAO), then $\widehat{H}$'s spectrum is number rigid in the sense of Ghosh and Peres (Duke Math. J., 166(10):1789-1858, 2017). Together with the rigidity of the scalar SAO, this completes the characterization of number rigidity in the soft-edge limits of Gaussian $\beta$-ensembles and their finite-rank spiked versions., Comment: 90 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

We consider the Stochastic Heat Equation (SHE) in $(1+1)$ dimensions with delta Dirac initial data and spacetime white noise. We prove exact large-time asymptotics for multi-point correlations of the SHE for strictly sublinear space coordinates. The sublinear condition is optimal, in the sense that different asymptotics are known to occur when the space coordinates grow linearly [Lin 2023, Theorem 1.1]. Lastly, a notable feature of our result is that it confirms the connection between multi-point correlations in the SHE and the ground state of the Hamiltonian of the delta-Bose gas., Comment: 10 pages, comments welcome!

9. Probabilistic Representations of Ordered Exponentials: Vector-Valued Schr\'odinger Semigroups and the Combinatorics of Anderson Localization

Abstract

We provide two applications of an elementary (yet seemingly unknown) probabilistic representation of matrix ordered exponentials, which generalizes the Feynman-Kac formula in finite dimensions and the change of measure formula between two continuous-time Markov processes on a finite state space. Our first and main application consists of a new Feynman-Kac formula for a class of vector-valued Schr\"odinger operators on the line, which is driven by two sources of randomness: The usual Brownian motion, and a continuous-time Markov process on a finite state space. An important feature of these formulas -- which is at the core of our motivation -- is that they enable the calculation of the joint moments of the semigroup kernels when the matrix potential function contains a continuous Gaussian noise. In particular, our moment formulas shed new light on what the joint moments of the Feynman-Kac kernels of the multivariate stochastic Airy operators of Bloemendal and Vir\'ag (Ann. Probab., 44(4):2726--2769, 2016.) should be; we state a precise conjecture to that effect, which we pursue in a forthcoming paper. Our second application consists of Feynman-Kac formulas for the expected square modulus $\mathbf E\big[|\Psi(t,x)|^2\big]$ of the solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation $\partial_t\Psi=-\mathsf i\mathcal H(t)\Psi$ with a time-dependent Hamiltonian $\mathcal H(t)$. Using this, we show that when we take $\mathcal H(t)=-\Delta+q(t,x)$ restricted to a finite box within $\mathbb Z^d$, where $q(t,x)$ is a possibly time-dependent Gaussian process, $\mathbf E\big[|\Psi(t,x)|^2\big]$ can be written as a relatively simple expectation that involves self- and mutual-intersections of random walks. In particular, this formula hints at a unified combinatorial mechanism that explains the occurrence of localization for both time-dependent and time-independent noises., Comment: The basic idea of using probabilistic representations for OEs has been used before in the mathematical physics literature. 10. Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and respiratory health in an Inuit community

Abstract

Abstract Background Concentrations of plasma per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are elevated in the Inuit population of Nunavik and may be causing adverse health effects. Respiratory health outcomes have been associated with PFAS, but have not been explored in Inuit communities. The aim of the study was to examine the association between PFAS and respiratory health outcomes, and the moderating role of nutritional biomarkers. Methods We included up to 1298 participants of the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 survey aged 16–80 years. Generalized regression models were used to estimate the associations between six individual PFAS congeners and four self-reported symptoms, four spirometry measures, and physician-diagnosed asthma. Outcomes associated with PFAS from single chemical models were further explored using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR). The modifying effect of n-3 PUFA in red blood cell quartiles and vitamin D deficiency were examined on the associations between PFAS and respiratory outcomes. Results PFNA and PFOS were associated with asthma (odds ratio (OR) 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12, 2.32; OR 1.45 95% CI 1.04, 2.03). PFOA, PFNA, PFDA and PFHxS were associated with a decrease in the ratio between the forced expiratory volume in the first second and forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC). No associations were observed with self-reported respiratory symptoms. No associations were observed between a PFAS mixture and asthma. Some associations were modified by nutritional factors, namely, stronger associations between PFOA and PFHxS and asthma with lower n-3 PUFA levels and stronger associations between PFDA, PFUnDA and PFOS and FEV1/FVC with vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion These findings add to the growing literature on the impacts of PFAS on respiratory health, and the importance of their global regulation. Associations were modified by nutritional factors pointing to the nutritional value of traditional Inuit foods.

11. The Unanticipated Side Effects of an Attachment Intervention: Parents Ask Higher Quality Questions

Abstract

Research suggests foster children are at risk for poor language skills. One intervention, attachment and biobehavioral catch-up (ABC), was shown to successfully improve not only young foster children's attachment to their parents, but also their receptive vocabulary skills (Bernard et al., 2017; Raby et al., 2019). Given that language acquisition is intricately linked to parents' sensitive interactions with their children, we ask whether the ABC intervention also improves the quality of parents' talk addressed to children. We test whether the ABC intervention results in more conversational turns between parents and their children. Crucially, we also look within these conversational turns, assessing the number and types of questions that parents ask children. Results suggest that parents who received the ABC intervention do not have more conversational turns or ask higher numbers of questions, compared to parents who received the control intervention. Rather, parents in the ABC group ask a higher proportion of child-led and restatement questions, and a lower proportion of parent-led and pedagogical questions, compared to the control. Additionally, the higher proportion of child-led questions were related to higher parental sensitivity scores. Together, these results suggest that an intervention originally designed to improve children's socioemotional outcomes had positive benefits for the quality of conversations between parents and children.

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. 19. Examining the Association between Procrastination and Decreases in Academic Achievement during the Transition from High School to University: A Piecewise Growth Model

Abstract

The grades of students have been shown to severely decrease during the transition from high school to university. Although past findings have shown that procrastination negatively relates to academic achievement, no study has examined the influence of procrastination on the grade trajectory of students during this critical academic transition. Therefore, our main goal was to use a prospective design to examine the potentially detrimental role of procrastination on the grade trajectory from high school to the first year at university. We also examined the influence of procrastination over and above five demographic and socio-economic control variables. A sample of 269 first-year university students completed a procrastination questionnaire during their first semester at university. The official grades at three time points were obtained via the Registrar's Office: (1) the average grade of the last year of high school; (2) the average grade of the first semester at university; and (3) the average grade of the second semester at university. Results of piecewise multilevel growth modeling revealed that higher procrastination was associated with a larger grade decrease from high school to the first semester at university, which was maintained during the second semester at university even after considering demographic and socio-economic control variables. This study underscores that procrastination is a risk factor that tends to exacerbate the achievement difficulties experienced by students during the transition from high school to university.

Abstract

Abstract Streptococcus suis is a bacterial pathogen that causes important economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. Since there are no current commercial vaccines, the use of autogenous vaccines applied to gilts/sows to enhance transfer of passive immunity is an attractive alternative to protect weaned piglets. However, there is no universal standardization in the production of autogenous vaccines and the vaccine formulation may be highly different among licenced manufacturing laboratories. In the present study, an autogenous vaccine that included S. suis serotypes 2, 1/2, 5, 7 and 14 was prepared by a licensed laboratory and administrated to gilts using a three-dose program prior to farrowing. The antibody response in gilts as well as the passive transfer of antibodies to piglets was then evaluated. In divergence with previously published data with an autogenous vaccine produced by a different company, the increased response seen in gilts was sufficient to improve maternal antibody transfer to piglets up to 5 weeks of age. However, piglets would still remain susceptible to S. suis disease which often appears during the second part of the nursery period. Vaccination did not affect the shedding of S. suis (as well as that of the specific S. suis serotypes included in the vaccine) by either gilts or piglets. Although all antibiotic treatments were absent during the trial, the clinical protective effect of the vaccination program with the autogenous vaccine could not be evaluated, since limited S. suis cases were present during the trial, confirming the need for a complete evaluation of the clinical protection that must include laboratory confirmation of the aetiological agent involved in the presence of S. suis-associated clinical signs. Further studies to evaluate the usefulness of gilt/sow vaccination with autogenous vaccines to protect nursery piglets should be done.

Abstract

Abstract Synthetic aperture radar is an invaluable tool for monitoring lake ice. This study utilizes synthetic aperture radar to analyze the 2019-2023 backscatter time series of perennially ice-covered Lake Untersee in East Antarctica. We observed stark seasonal backscatter variations, averaging –9.6 dB from December to March and –3.7 dB from May to November. These fluctuations correspond to the abundance of sub-centimeter bubbles at the ice/water interface. Notably, the backscatter increase in April-May aligns closely with variations in ice thickness across the lake. Our findings suggest that ice cover thickness influences the timing and duration of ice accretion at the bottom, the accumulation of dissolved gases and bubbles, and the resultant changes in surface roughness at the ice/water interface. These factors collectively impact the backscatter response. This study enhances our understanding of the interactions between subsurface processes and synthetic aperture radar backscatter, shedding light on the seasonal dynamics of perennially ice-covered lakes.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

Let $\xi$ be a singular Gaussian noise on $\mathbb R^d$ that is either white, fractional, or with the Riesz covariance kernel; in particular, there exists a scaling parameter $\omega>0$ such that $c^{\omega/2}\xi(c\cdot)$ is equal in distribution to $\xi$ for all $c>0$. Let $(\xi_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon>0}$ be a sequence of smooth mollifications such that $\xi_\varepsilon\to\xi$ as $\varepsilon\to0$. We study the asymptotics of the moments of the parabolic Anderson model (PAM) with noise $\xi_\varepsilon$ as $\varepsilon\to0$, both for large (i.e., $t\to\infty$) and fixed times $t$. This approach makes it possible to study the moments of the PAM with regular and singular noises in a unified fashion, as well as interpolate between the two settings. As corollaries of our main results, we obtain the following: $\textbf{(1)}$ When $\xi$ is subcritical (i.e., $0<\omega<2$), our results extend the known large-time moment and tail asymptotics for the Stratonovich PAM with noise $\xi$. Our method of proof clarifies the role of the maximizers of the variational problems (known as Hartree ground states) that appear in these moment asymptotics in describing the geometry of intermittency. We take this opportunity to prove the existence and study the properties of the Hartree ground state with a fractional kernel, which we believe is of independent interest. $\textbf{(2)}$ When $\xi$ is critical or supercritical (i.e., $\omega=2$ or $\omega>2$), our results provide a new interpretation of the moment blowup phenomenon observed in the Stratonovich PAM with noise $\xi$. 28. Current-use pesticide exposures in remote Inuit communities

The global use of pesticides is increasing; however, few studies have examined the exposure of current-use pesticide exposure in Inuit populations. Some current use pesticides are also capable of long-range transport, potentially increasing exposures to northern populations. The study aim was to analyse pesticide (chlorophenoxy, organophosphates, and pyrethroid pesticide) biomarker levels in pooled samples from an Inuit population in Nunavik, Quebec. Thirty pooled samples from the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 survey (Q2017) from individuals aged 16–80 years were included. Creatinine-adjusted arithmetic (AM) were compared by sex, age, and region sub-groups, and geometric mean concentrations (GM) were compared to those in the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). Most analysed pesticide biomarkers were detected, and PNP (a metabolite of methyl and ethyl parathion), trans-DCCA (a metabolite of pyrethroids), and 3,5,6-TCP (a metabolite of chlorpyrifos) had the highest concentrations. Concentrations in Q2017 were largely similar to or less than CHMS concentrations. Although not significant, there was a general increase in 2,4-D (a chlorophenoxy biomarker), 3,5,6-TCP, 3-PBA (a metabolite of pyrethroids), and trans-DCCA with increasing age. Concentrations were also somewhat higher in females versus males, but these were not significant. Environmental exposures to current use pesticides were detected in Nunavik and concentrations were similar to or less than those in the general Canadian population. Regular monitoring of current use pesticide exposures is recommended given the increasing global use of pesticides.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe multi-drug resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii has gained global attention as an important clinical challenge. Owing to its ability to survive on surfaces, its capacity for horizontal gene transfer, and its resistance to front-line antibiotics, A. baumannii has established itself as a successful pathogen. Bacterial conjugation is a central mechanism for pathogen evolution. The epidemic multidrug-resistant A. baumannii ACICU harbours a plasmid encoding a Type IV Secretion System (T4SS) with homology to the E. coli F-plasmid, and plasmids with homologous gene clusters have been identified in several A. baumannii sequence types. However the genetic and host strain diversity, global distribution, and functional ability of this group of plasmids is not fully understood. Using systematic analysis, we show that pACICU2 belongs to a group of almost 120 T4SS-encoding plasmids within four different species of Acinetobacter and one strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae from human and environmental origin, and globally distributed across 20 countries spanning 4 continents. Genetic diversity was observed both outside and within the T4SS-encoding cluster, and 47% of plasmids harboured resistance determinants, with two plasmids harbouring eleven. Conjugation studies with an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strain showed that the XDR plasmid could be successfully transferred to a more divergent A. baumanii, and transconjugants exhibited the resistance phenotype of the plasmid. Collectively, this demonstrates that these T4SS-encoding plasmids are globally distributed and more widespread among Acinetobacter than previously thought, and that they represent an important potential reservoir for future clinical concern.

Introduction: The CASPIAN and IMpower133 trials revealed a significant survival benefit of chemotherapy plus immunotherapy in patients with extensive-stage SCLC. The current study characterizes the proportion of real-world patients who would have met eligibility for these trials and highlights factors influencing eligibility in the real-world setting. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patient data was conducted for stage IV patients with SCLC treated at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, Canada. Trial eligibility was based on criteria used in the IMpower133 and CASPIAN trials. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Overall survival was assessed using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: Of the 116 patients included, only 12.1% met the overall eligibility criteria for the IMpower133 trial, and 14.7% for the CASPIAN trial. The most common reasons for ineligibility included: Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) 2 or greater (77.5%), inadequate organ function (48%), and the presence of brain metastases at diagnosis (37.3%). Sixty-one patients (59.8%) met two or more major ineligibility criteria. If trial eligibility was expanded to include ECOG 2 patients, an additional 10.3% would have met eligibility. The median overall survival for all-comers was 6.5 months. Conclusions: Only a small minority of real-world patients with extensive-stage SCLC would have met eligibility for the IMpower133 and CASPIAN trials, with ECOG greater than or equal to 2, inadequate organ function, and brain metastases comprising the most common reasons for trial ineligibility. Future clinical trials should expand the inclusion criteria to better represent real-world patient populations.

In recent years, resistive memories have emerged as a pivotal advancement in the realm of electronics, offering numerous advantages in terms of energy efficiency, scalability, and non-volatility [1]. Characterized by their unique resistive switching behavior, these memories are well-suited for a variety of applications, ranging from high-density data storage to neuromorphic computing [2]. Their potential is further enhanced by their compatibility with advanced semiconductor processes, enabling seamless integration into modern electronic circuits [3]. A particularly promising avenue for resistive memory lies in its integration at the Back-End-of-Line (BEOL) stage of semiconductor manufacturing [4]. BEOL integration involves processes that occur after the fabrication of the transistors, primarily focusing on creating interconnections that electrically link these transistors. Integrating resistive memories at this stage can lead to compact, efficient, and high-performance architectures, pivotal for in-memory computing applications where data storage and processing are co-located [5]. This paper studies three ways to integrate TiOx-based resistive memory into passive crossbar array structures, using chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) processes, focusing on identifying the optimal integration techniques.

Abstract

Detecting single charging events in quantum devices is an important step towards realizing practical quantum circuits for quantum information processing. In this work, we demonstrate that van derWaals heterostructure devices with gated nano-constrictions in monolayer WSe2 can be used as charge detectors for nearby quantum dots. These results open the possibility of implementing charge detection schemes based on 2D materials in complex quantum circuits.

33. Dicamba and 2,4-D in the Urine of Pregnant Women in the Midwest: Comparison of Two Cohorts (2010–2012 vs. 2020–2022)

Abstract

Currently, there are no known human biomonitoring studies that concurrently examine biomarkers of dicamba and 2,4-D. We sought to compare biomarkers of exposure to herbicides in pregnant women residing in the US Midwest before and after the adoption of dicamba-tolerant soybean technology using urine specimens obtained in 2010–2012 from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be (N = 61) and in 2020–2022 from the Heartland Study (N = 91). Specific gravity-standardized concentration levels for each analyte were compared between the cohorts, assuming data are lognormal and specifying values below the LOD as left-censored. The proportion of pregnant individuals with dicamba detected above the LOD significantly increased from 28% (95% CI: 16%, 40%) in 2010–2012 to 70% (95% CI: 60%, 79%) in 2020–2022, and dicamba concentrations also significantly increased from 0.066 μg/L (95% CI: 0.042, 0.104) to 0.271 μg/L (95% CI: 0.205, 0.358). All pregnant individuals from both cohorts had 2,4-D detected. Though 2,4-D concentration levels increased, the difference was not significant (p-value = 0.226). Reliance on herbicides has drastically increased in the last ten years in the United States, and the results obtained in this study highlight the need to track exposure and impacts on adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.

34. Use of Apremilast to Achieve Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment Goals and Satisfaction at 1 Year in the Canadian Real-World APPRAISE Study

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The APPRAISE study was conducted to better understand the 12-month effectiveness, tolerability, and patient satisfaction with apremilast treatment for patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in real-world settings. Methods APPRAISE (NCT03608657), a prospective, multicenter, observational study, enrolled adults with active PsA prescribed apremilast per routine care between July 2018 and March 2020. Patients were followed for 12 months with visits suggested every 4 months. The primary outcome measure was achievement of remission (REM) or low disease activity (LDA), defined as a Clinical Disease Activity Index for Psoriatic Arthritis (cDAPSA) score ≤ 13. Results Of the 102 patients who enrolled, 45 (44.1%) discontinued the study by 12 months. Most patients (75.5%) had moderate or high disease activity, and 24.5% were in REM/LDA at baseline based on cDAPSA score. Achievement of cDAPSA REM/LDA was 63.7%, 67.2%, and 53.8% at months 4, 8, and 12, respectively. In those continuing in the study, significant improvements were seen in swollen and tender joint counts, pain visual analog scale, psoriasis body surface area, and complete dactylitis resolution. Enthesitis reduction was also observed. Improvements in treatment satisfaction and patient-reported outcomes, including Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index and the 36-item Short Form physical and mental component scores, were observed over 12 months. Abstract

Abstract Background Acute kidney injury is a common disorder that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Point-of-care ultrasonography (PoCUS) is an imaging modality performed at the bedside and is used to assess for obstructive causes of acute kidney injury. Little is known about the test characteristics of PoCUS in patients with acute kidney injury. Objective Our primary objective was to describe the test characteristics of PoCUS for the detection of hydronephrosis in patients presenting with acute kidney injury at our centre. Our secondary objective was to describe the current rate of use of PoCUS for this indication. Results In total, 7873 patients were identified between June 1, 2019 and April 30, 2021, with 4611 meeting inclusion criteria. Of these, 94 patients (2%) underwent PoCUS, and 65 patients underwent both PoCUS and reference standard, for a total of 124 kidneys included in our diagnostic accuracy analysis. The prevalence of hydronephrosis in our cohort was 33% (95% CI 25–41%). PoCUS had a sensitivity of 85% (95% CI 71–94%) and specificity of 78% (95% CI 68–87%) for the detection of hydronephrosis. Conclusion We describe the test characteristics of PoCUS for the detection of hydronephrosis in a cohort of patients with acute kidney injury. The low uptake of this test presents an opportunity for quality improvement work to increase its use for this indication.

Abstract

Ocean wave periods are estimated using measurements of S-band signals-of-opportunity reflections from the sea surface. The measurements were collected on an oil platform and show a time evolving Doppler centroid frequency and spectral width due to the vertical motion of ocean waves within the glistening zone observed. Previous results for estimating the significant wave height are also re-examined using the Doppler spectral width. For the one month dataset considered, the period of oscillations in the Doppler centroid frequency are found highly correlated ($\mathbf {R \approx 0.78}$ and $\mathbf {Bias \approx 1.02 (s)}$) to ocean wave period information from a nearby buoy.

38. Differential effects of pesticides on dioxin receptor signaling and p53 activation

Abstract

Abstract As modern agricultural practices increase their use of chemical pesticides, it is inevitable that we will find a number of these xenobiotics within drinking water supplies and disseminated throughout the food chain. A major problem that arises from this pollution is that the effects of most of these pesticides on cellular mechanisms in general, and how they interact with each other and affect human cells are still poorly understood. In this study we make use of cultured human cancer cells to measure by qRT-PCR how pesticides affect gene expression of stress pathways. Immunoblotting studies were performed to monitor protein expression levels and activation of signaling pathways. We make use of immunofluorescence and microscopy to visualize and quantify DNA damage events in those cells. In the current study, we evaluate the potential of a subset of widely used pesticides to activate the dioxin receptor pathway and affect its crosstalk with estrogen receptor signaling. We quantify the impact of these chemicals on the p53-dependent cellular stress response. We find that, not only can the different pesticides activate the dioxin receptor pathway, most of them have better than additive effects on this pathway when combined at low doses. We also show that different pesticides have the ability to trigger crosstalk events that may generate genotoxic estrogen metabolites. Finally, we show that some, but not all of the tested pesticides can induce a p53-dependent stress response. Taken together our results provide evidence that several xenobiotics found within the environment have the potential to interact together to elicit significant effects on cell systems. Our data warrants caution when the toxicity of substances that are assessed simply for individual chemicals, since important biological effects could be observed only in the presence of other compounds, and that even at very low concentrations.

Abstract

We prove that the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator is rigid in the sense of Ghosh and Peres (Duke Math. J., 166(10):1789--1858, 2017) for Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. This proves the rigidity of the Airy-$\beta$ point process and the soft-edge limit of rank-$1$ perturbations of Gaussian $\beta$-Ensembles for any $\beta>0$, and solves an open problem mentioned in a previous work of Bufetov, Nikitin, and Qiu (Mosc. Math. J., 19(2):217--274, 2019). Abstract

Recently, we used the Sinc collocation method with the double exponential transformation to compute eigenvalues for singular Sturm-Liouville problems. In this work, we show that the computation complexity of the eigenvalues of such a differential eigenvalue problem can be considerably reduced when its operator commutes with the parity operator. In this case, the matrices resulting from the Sinc collocation method are centrosymmetric. Utilizing well known properties of centrosymmetric matrices, we transform the problem of solving one large eigensystem into solving two smaller eigensystems. We show that only 1/(N+1) of all components need to be computed and stored in order to obtain all eigenvalues, where 2N + 1 corresponds to the dimension of the eigensystem. We applied our result to the Schrödinger equation with the anharmonic potential and the numerical results section clearly illustrates the substantial gain in effciency and accuracy when using the proposed algorithm.

42. Grades of University and College Students Decrease during the Transition from High School to Tertiary Education: A Latent Change Analysis of the 2 × 2 Model of Perfectionism

Abstract

Academic performance tends to deteriorate during the transition from high school to post-secondary education. In this study, our goal was to investigate whether the degree of this performance deterioration differs across the four subtypes of perfectionism from the 2 × 2 model of perfectionism. Samples of 392 university students and 946 college students completed a perfectionism questionnaire. Their high school and first semester grades were obtained through the office of the registrar. Results of latent change analyses revealed that the grades of students decreased during the transition to university (-12%) and college (-4%). The four subtypes of perfectionism were associated with a different degree of performance deterioration and supported the four hypotheses of the 2 × 2 model of perfectionism. Both university and college students with pure socially prescribed perfectionism experienced the strongest decrease in academic performance and should be closely monitored during their transition into post-secondary education.

Abstract

The choice of substrate orientation for semiconductor quantum dot circuits offers opportunities for tailoring spintronic properties such as g-factors for specific functionality. In this letter, we demonstrate the operation of a few-electron double quantum dot circuit fabricated from a (110)-oriented GaAs quantum well. We estimate the in-plane electron g-factor from the profile of the enhanced inter-dot tunneling (leakage) current near zero magnetic field. Spin-blockade due to Pauli exclusion can block inter-dot tunneling. However, this blockade becomes inactive due to hyperfine interaction mediated spin flip-flop processes between electron spin states and the nuclear spin of the host material. The g-factor of absolute value ~0.1 found for a magnetic field parallel to the direction [11(bar)0], is approximately a factor of four lower than that for comparable circuits fabricated from material grown on widely-employed standard (001) GaAs substrates, and is in line with reported values determined by purely optical means for quantum well structures grown on (110) GaAs substrates., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures
