1. Focused Kerr measurements on patterned arrays of exchange biased square dots

Abstract

Microstructural effects on the antiferromagnetic layer were investigated on IrMn/Co exchange biased square dots. IrMn grain size and distributions were tuned by changing Cu buffer layer or IrMn thicknesses. Lateral dimensions from 200 to 50nm were varied. Exchange bias (Hex) variability was analysed through focused Kerr measurements on small groups of dots. Patterned samples presented average exchange bias values following the trends and values of full sheet samples. Concerning the dot to dot behaviour, it resulted that IrMn microstructure variations have minor effects on Hex variability, because no particular trend is observed as a function of grain size and distribution. The variability is attributed to geometry variation and Co intrinsic variability.

Abstract

We demonstrate that magnetic skyrmions with a mean diameter around 60 nm can be stabilized at room temperature and zero external magnetic field in an exchange-biased Pt/Co/NiFe/IrMn multilayer stack. This is achieved through an advanced optimization of the multilayer stack composition in order to balance the different magnetic energies controlling the skyrmion size and stability. Magnetic imaging is performed both with magnetic force microscopy and scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometry, the latter providing unambiguous measurements at zero external magnetic field. In such samples, we show that exchange bias provides an immunity of the skyrmion spin texture to moderate external magnetic field, in the tens of mT range, which is an important feature for applications as memory devices. These results establish exchange-biased multilayer stacks as a promising platform towards the effective realization of memory and logic devices based on magnetic skyrmions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We report on the excitation and detection of short-waved spin waves with wave vectors up to about $40\,\mathrm{rad}\,\mu\mathrm{m}^{-1}$ in spin-wave waveguides made from ultrathin, in-plane magnetized Co$_{8}$Fe$_{72}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB). The CoFeB is incorporated in a layer stack of Ta/CoFeB/Mgo, a layer system featuring large spin orbit torques and a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant. The short-waved spin waves are excited by nanometric coplanar waveguides and are detected via spin rectification and microfocussed Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. We show that the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy benefits the spin-wave lifetime greatly, resulting in a lifetime comparable to bulk systems without interfacial damping. The presented results pave the way for the successful extension of magnonics to ultrathin asymmetric layer stacks featuring large spin orbit torques.

Abstract

Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are considered as potential information carriers for future spintronics memory and logic devices. Such applications will require the control of their local creation and annihilation, which involves so far solutions that are either energy consuming or difficult to integrate. Here we demonstrate the control of skyrmion bubbles nucleation and annihilation using electric field gating, an easily integrable and potentially energetically efficient solution. We present a detailed stability diagram of the skyrmion bubbles in a Pt/Co/oxide trilayer and show that their stability can be controlled via an applied electric field. An analytical bubble model, with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction imbedded in the domain wall energy, account for the observed electrical skyrmion switching effect. This allows us to unveil the origin of the electrical control of skyrmions stability and to show that both magnetic dipolar interaction and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction play an important role in the skyrmion bubble stabilization.

Abstract

We show that the spin-orbit torque induced magnetization switching in nanomagnets presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction is governed by a chiral domain nucleation at the edges. The nucleation is induced by the DMI and the applied in-plane magnetic field followed by domain wall propagation. Our micromagnetic simulations show that the DC switching current can be defined as the edge nucleation current, which decreases strongly with increasing amplitude of the DMI. This description allows us to build a simple analytical model to quantitatively predict the switching current. We find that domain nucleation occurs down to a lateral size of 15 nm, defined by the length-scale of the DMI, beyond which the reversal mechanism approaches a macrospin behavior. The switching is deterministic and bipolar.

7. Phenomenology of chiral damping in noncentrosymmetric magnets

Abstract

A phenomenology of magnetic chiral damping is proposed in the context of magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry breaking. We show that the magnetic damping tensor adopts a general form that accounts for a component linear in magnetization gradient in the form of Lifshitz invariants. We propose different microscopic mechanisms that can produce such a damping in ferromagnetic metals, among which spin pumping in the presence of anomalous Hall effect and an effective "$s$-$d$" Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange. The implication of this chiral damping in terms of domain wall motion is investigated in the flow and creep regimes. These predictions have major importance in the context of field- and current-driven texture motion in noncentrosymmetric (ferro-, ferri-, antiferro-)magnets, not limited to metals., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The recent observation of current-induced domain wall (DW) motion with large velocity in ultrathin magnetic wires has opened new opportunities for spintronic devices. However, there is still no consensus on the underlying mechanisms of DW motion. Key to this debate is the DW structure, which can be of Bloch or N\'eel type, and dramatically affects the efficiency of the different proposed mechanisms. To date, most experiments aiming to address this question have relied on deducing the DW structure and chirality from its motion under additional in-plane applied fields, which is indirect and involves strong assumptions on its dynamics. Here we introduce a general method enabling direct, in situ, determination of the DW structure in ultrathin ferromagnets. It relies on local measurements of the stray field distribution above the DW using a scanning nanomagnetometer based on the Nitrogen-Vacancy defect in diamond. We first apply the method to a Ta/Co40Fe40B20(1 nm)/MgO magnetic wire and find clear signature of pure Bloch DWs. In contrast, we observe left-handed N\'eel DWs in a Pt/Co(0.6 nm)/AlOx wire, providing direct evidence for the presence of a sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the Pt/Co interface. Abstract

Current induced domain wall (DW) motion in perpendicularly magnetized nanostripes in the presence of spin orbit torques is studied. We show using micromagnetic simulations that the direction of the current induced DW motion and the associated DW velocity depend on the relative values of the field like torque (FLT) and the Slonczewski like torques (SLT). The results are well explained by a collective coordinate model which is used to draw a phase diagram of the DW dynamics as a function of the FLT and the SLT. Abstract

We employ a scanning NV-center microscope to perform stray field imaging of bubble magnetic domains in a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer with 6 {\AA} of Co. The stray field created by the domain walls is quantitatively mapped with few-nanometer spatial resolution, with a probe-sample distance of about 100 nm. Abstract

We show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can lead to a tilting of the domain wall (DW) surface in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic nanotracks when DW dynamics is driven by an easy axis magnetic field or a spin polarized current. The DW tilting affects the DW dynamics for large DMI and the tilting relaxation time can be very large as it scales with the square of the track width. The results are well explained by an analytical model based on a Lagrangian approach where the DMI and the DW tilting are included. We propose a simple way to estimate the DMI in a magnetic multilayers by measuring the dependence of the DW tilt angle on a transverse static magnetic field. Our results shed light on the current induced DW tilting observed recently in Co/Ni multilayers with inversion asymmetry, and further support the presence of DMI in these systems., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 Supplementary Materials

Abstract

Domain wall propagation has been measured in continuous, weakly disordered, quasi-two-dimensional, Ising-like magnetic layers that are subject to spatially periodic domain wall pinning potentials. The potentials are generated non-destructively using the stray magnetic field of ordered arrays of magnetically hard [Co/Pt]$_m$ nanoplatelets which are patterned above and are physically separated from the continuous magnetic layer. The effect of the periodic pinning potentials on thermally activated domain wall creep dynamics is shown to be equivalent, at first approximation, to that of a uniform, effective retardation field, $H_{ret}$, which acts against the applied field, $H$. We show that $H_{ret}$ depends not only on the array geometry but also on the relative orientation of $H$ and the magnetization of the nanoplatelets. A result of the latter dependence is that wall-mediated hysteresis loops obtained for a set nanoplatelet magnetization exhibit many properties that are normally associated with ferromagnet/antiferromagnet exchange bias systems. These include a switchable bias, coercivity enhancement and domain wall roughness that is dependent on the applied field polarity., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The electric (E) field control of magnetic properties opens the prospects of an alternative to magnetic field or electric current activation to control magnetization. Multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have proven to be particularly sensitive to the influence of an E-field due to the interfacial origin of their anisotropy. In these systems, E-field effects have been recently applied to assist magnetization switching and control domain wall (DW) velocity. Here we report on two new applications of the E-field in a similar material : controlling DW nucleation and stopping DW propagation at the edge of the electrode.

Abstract

An analytical model was developped to describe the current induced DW dynamics of a Bloch DW in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field. The model takes into account the DW deformation and the magnetization tilting in the domain. The model is compared to the results of micromagnetic simulation and an excellent agreement is obtained. In the steady state regime, the model shows that the domain tilting does not change the DW mobility. An external or current induced transverse magnetic field such as the Oersted or Rashba field can prevent the Walker breakdown leading to a higher domain wall velocity., Comment: to be published in Journal of Applied Physics

Abstract

Current-induced domain wall (DW) displacements in an array of ultrathin Pt/Co/AlOx wires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been directly observed by wide field Kerr microscopy. DWs in all wires in the array were driven simultaneously and their displacement on the micrometer-scale was controlled by the current pulse amplitude and duration. At the lower current densities where DW displacements were observed (j less than or equal to 1.5 x 10^12 A/m^2), the DW motion obeys a creep law. Abstract

We report the direct measurement of the non-adiabatic component of the spin-torque in domain walls. Our method is independent of both the pinning of the domain wall in the wire as well as of the Gilbert damping parameter. We demonstrate that the ratio between the non-adiabatic and the adiabatic components can be as high as 1, and explain this high value by the importance of the spin-flip rate to the non-adiabatic torque. Abstract

Background Optimal treatment of prosthetic joint infection and chronic osteomyelitis consists of surgical removal of biofilm-embedded bacteria, followed by a 6–12 week course of antimicrobial therapy. However, when optimal surgery is not feasible, oral prolonged suppressive antibiotic therapy (PSAT) is recommended to prevent prosthesis loosening and/or relapse of infection. Since 2010, we have used infection salvage therapy using off-label subcutaneous (sc) injection of a β-lactam as PSAT for patients in whom oral PSAT is not possible. Methods A single-centre prospective cohort study (2010–18) reporting treatment modalities, efficacy and safety in all patients receiving sc PSAT. NCT03403608. Results The 10 included patients (median age 79 years) had polymicrobial (n = 5) or MDR bacterial (n = 4) prosthetic joint infection (knee, n = 4; hip, n = 3) or chronic osteomyelitis (n = 3). After initial intensive therapy, seven patients received ertapenem, three patients received ceftriaxone and one patient received ceftazidime by sc injection (one patient received 8 days of ceftriaxone before receiving ertapenem). In one patient, sc PSAT failed with recurrent signs of infection under treatment. In three patients, sc PSAT had to be discontinued due to side effects; in only one of these was the sc route implicated (skin necrosis following direct sc injection and not gravity infusion). Median treatment duration was 433 days. In six patients, sc PSAT was successful with favourable outcome at the time of writing. Interestingly, three patients with MDR bacterial carriage at baseline lost this under PSAT during follow-up. Conclusions As salvage therapy, sc PSAT delivered by gravity infusion is a safe and interesting alternative when an optimal surgical strategy is not feasible and no oral treatment is available.

Abstract

In this paper, we describe a new media for heat assisted magnetic recording at ultrahigh density. Thermal simulations were performed to optimize this media. It consists in a patterned porous silicon substrate on which magnetic multilayers are deposited by magnetron sputtering. Magnetic properties of these multilayers are compared to those of layers deposited on regular silicon substrate. Despite the very particular structure of porous silicon surface, no big differences are observed and magnetic properties of the multilayers are conserved. Writing tests will be performed on these media with heating tips. Index Terms--Magnetic materials, nanostructured materials, thermomagnetic recording.

Abstract

We report on the excitation and detection of short-waved spin waves with wave vectors up to about $40\,\mathrm{rad}\,\mu\mathrm{m}^{-1}$ in spin-wave waveguides made from ultrathin, in-plane magnetized Co$_{8}$Fe$_{72}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB). The CoFeB is incorporated in a layer stack of Ta/CoFeB/Mgo, a layer system featuring large spin orbit torques and a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant. The short-waved spin waves are excited by nanometric coplanar waveguides and are detected via spin rectification and microfocussed Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. We show that the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy benefits the spin-wave lifetime greatly, resulting in a lifetime comparable to bulk systems without interfacial damping. The presented results pave the way for the successful extension of magnonics to ultrathin asymmetric layer stacks featuring large spin orbit torques.

Abstract

The preparation and magnetic properties of submicron magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are described by using magnetic electrodes based on Co/Pt multilayers displaying perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) on both sides of an alumina barrier. The magnetic moments of both electrodes are shown to be out of plane and two well-separated switching fields are used for obtaining the well-defined parallel and antiparallel configurations of the magnetizations.
