This study investigates the correlation between ocular hemodynamics, scleral rigidity (SR), and plasma endothelin-1 (ET1) levels in treatment-naive patients with asymmetrical AMD.Patients and Methods: This study included 20 treatment-naive patients (12 females and 8 males) with an average age of 76.4 ± 3.7 years, who presented with AMD with neovascular membrane formation (nAMD) in one eye, and intermediate grade 2 AMD (iAMD) in the other eye. The control group consisted of 20 healthy subjects (13 females and 7 males) with a mean age of 74.7 ± 3.9 years. All patients and healthy controls underwent color Doppler imaging (i) of the ophthalmic artery (OA), short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs), and central retinal artery (CRA); Plasma ET-1 levels were measured for all patients and healthy subjects. Corneal biomechanics were assessed using an Ocular Response Analyzer and two indices were obtained: corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF).Results: Results showed reduced blood flow velocities and increased resistance indices in AMD eyes, particularly affecting the short posterior ciliary arteries. According to mechanical theory, ARMD eyes exhibited elevated scleral rigidity and corneal resistance factor compared to controls, with a notable rise in SR in neovascular AMD (nAMD) eyes. As per the chronic subacute inflammation theory, plasma ET-1 levels were significantly higher in AMD patients, correlating with abnormal SPCAs blood flow and increased resistance indices. Conclusion: Findings suggest a multifactorial etiology of AMD involving an increase of ET-1 plasma levels with biomechanic damages of corneal and scleral tissue in nAMD.Keywords: AMD, endothelin-1, corneal biomechanics, scleral rigidity, hemodynamics

- Abstract
Researching the process of development during field experience before an elementary education teacher is hired is necessary to better understand their teaching self-efficacy. The purpose of this qualitative, single case study design was to explore how field experience, as part of a university undergraduate teaching program, developed novice elementary teachers' preparedness for employability and self-efficacy in classrooms. Yin's 5 step analysis process was used to classify, examine and describe themes found within the qualitative data. Three collection tools were used to obtain data to answer three research questions; individual interviews, two focus groups, and virtual participation reflection journals. There were twenty seven initial codes that summarized the responses from ten participants, yielding six themes: (1) Field Experience in the Elementary Education Classroom Better Prepared Teachers by Providing Real-World Experiences, (2) Student Teaching as a Capstone for an Academic Program Supported the Candidates Professional Foundation, (3) Instructional Support for Teacher Candidates Supported the Candidates Employability, (4) Pedagogy for Teacher Candidates Provided Structured Practice for Future Teachers, (5) Teacher Self-Efficacy in the Elementary Education Classroom Supported Teacher Confidence, (6) Teaching Strategies for Classroom Instruction Better Prepared Teachers for the Elementary Education Classroom. The findings suggested a variety of field experiences best prepared teachers to be employed and supported their self-efficacy in the classroom. Such findings may be applied to institutes of higher education teacher preparation programs. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Abstract Although mostly considered distinct, conspiracy mentality and paranoia share conceptual similarities (e.g., persecutory content, resistance to disconfirming evidence). Using self-report data from a large and multinational online sample (N = 2510; from the UK, the US, Hong Kong, Germany, and Australia), we examined whether paranoia and conspiracy mentality represent distinct latent constructs in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Utilising network analysis, we then explored common and unique correlates of paranoia and conspiracy mentality while accounting for their shared variance. Across sites, paranoia and conspiracy mentality presented distinct, yet weakly correlated (r = 0.26), constructs. Both were associated with past traumatic experiences, holding negative beliefs about the self and other people, sleep problems, and a tendency to worry. However, paranoia was related to increased negative affect (i.e., anxiety) and decreased social support, whereas the opposite pattern was observed for conspiracy mentality (i.e., decreased anxiety and depression, increased social support). Paranoia and conspiracy mentality are related but not the same constructs. Their similar and distinct correlates point to common and unique risk factors and underlying mechanisms.

Nonlinear Sciences - Adaptation and Self-Organizing Systems - Abstract
Characterization of complexity within the sociological interpretation has resulted in a large number of notions, which are relevant in different situations. From the statistical mechanics point of view, these notions resemble entropy. In a recent work, intriguing non-monotonous properties were observed in an opinion dynamics Sznajd model. These properties were found to be consequences of the hierarchical organization assumed for the system, though their nature remained unexplained. In the present work we bring an unified entropical framework that provides a deeper understanding of those system features. By perfoming numerical simulations, the system track probabilistic dependence on the initial structures is quantified in terms of entropy. Several entropical regimes are unveiled. The myriad of possible system outputs is enhanced within a maximum impredictability regime. A mutual structural weakness of the initial parties could be associated to this regime, fostering the emergence of a third position., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (BF) has the greatest potential impact on child mortality of any preventive intervention. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) during the first hour of life is beneficial for initiating BF; however, routine separation of mother and infant is still common. This work aimed to demonstrate that SSC during the first hour of life is associated with a greater frequency and duration of exclusive BF. Methods: This is an observational case–control study. We reviewed the medical records of patients born between 2016 and 2022 classified as cases or controls based on the history of SSC in the first hour of life. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 28. Results: We included 362 medical records, of which 200 (55.2%) had SSC and were considered cases; the 162 (44.8%) who did not have SSC were considered controls. Those who received SSC were more likely to receive exclusive BF at 3 (163 [81.5%] vs. 94 [58%], p < 0.001) and 6 months of age (147 [73.5%] vs. 83 [51.2%], p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients who received SSC in the first hour of life were more likely to receive exclusive BF at 3 and 6 months of age. Promoting and respecting this practice is essential to increase the possibility of a newborn to be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life.

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is currently the most effective diagnostic tool for detecting prostate cancer (PCa) and evaluating adenocarcinoma-mimicking lesions of the prostate gland, among which granulomatous prostatitis (GP) represents the most interesting diagnostic challenge. GP consists of a heterogeneous group of chronic inflammatory lesions that can be differentiated into four types: idiopathic, infective, iatrogenic, and associated with systemic granulomatous disease. The incidence of GP is growing due to the increase in endourological surgical interventions and the adoption of intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer; therefore, the difficulty lies in identifying specific features of GP on mpMRI to avoid the use of transrectal prostate biopsy as much as possible.

BackgroundTo evaluate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) parameters, such as TransPA (transverse prostate maximum sectional area), TransCGA (transverse central gland sectional area), TransPZA (transverse peripheral zone sectional area), and TransPAI (TransPZA/TransCGA ratio) in predicting prostate cancer (PCa) in prostate imaging reporting and data system (PI-RADS) 3 lesions.MethodsSensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV), the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and the best cut-off, were calculated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to evaluate the capability to predict PCa.ResultsOut of 120 PI-RADS 3 lesions, 54 (45.0%) were PCa with 34 (28.3%) csPCas. Median TransPA, TransCGA, TransPZA and TransPAI were 15.4cm2, 9.1cm2, 5.5cm2 and 0.57, respectively. At multivariate analysis, location in the transition zone (OR=7.92, 95% CI: 2.70-23.29, P

This is a case of [68 Ga]Ga-Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-11 PET/CT in a 73-years old patient presenting high Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels despite both multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and 12-core saturation biopsy negative for prostate cancer (Pca). This is a highly interesting case because, despite the advanced metastatic spread at initial presentation as showed by [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-PET/CT, the primary Pca was detected by none of the diagnostic techniques (12 random sample biopsy, mpMRI, PSMA PET/CT). However, [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-PET/CT showed a suspicious axillary lesion suitable for biopsy, which finally resulted as Pca metastasis. This case report is therefore a brilliant example of how [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-PET/CT optimized patient’s management.

Abstract Understanding factors driving vaccine hesitancy is crucial to vaccination success. We surveyed adults (N = 2510) from February to March 2021 across five sites (Australia = 502, Germany = 516, Hong Kong = 445, UK = 512, USA = 535) using a cross-sectional design and stratified quota sampling for age, sex, and education. We assessed willingness to take a vaccine and a comprehensive set of putative predictors. Predictive power was analysed with a machine learning algorithm. Only 57.4% of the participants indicated that they would definitely or probably get vaccinated. A parsimonious machine learning model could identify vaccine hesitancy with high accuracy (i.e. 82% sensitivity and 79–82% specificity) using 12 variables only. The most relevant predictors were vaccination conspiracy beliefs, various paranoid concerns related to the pandemic, a general conspiracy mentality, COVID anxiety, high perceived risk of infection, low perceived social rank, lower age, lower income, and higher population density. Campaigns seeking to increase vaccine uptake need to take mistrust as the main driver of vaccine hesitancy into account.

The concept of logos takes on a new and interesting connotation through Christian revelation. The logos—word, discourse, reason—becomes human-divine flesh. Moreover, God, who is Word, needs human words to explain and reveal himself to human beings. In so doing, God lowers himself to the human level, thus becoming manipulable, but at the same time, he makes human words and, consequently, human beings greater and of higher dignity. As a result, the human person becomes the giver of language to the one who allows him to speak. In this paper, I will highlight the consequences of a logos becoming flesh for anthropology, following the line of thought of Klaus Hemmerle. In particular, I will focus on Hemmerle’s trinitarian perspective and his phenomenology of language as a means for explaining Christian revelation.

Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Objectiveto evaluate the impact of 3D model for a comprehensive assessment of surgical planning and quality of partial nephrectomy (PN).Materials and methods195 patients with cT1-T2 renal mass scheduled for PN were enrolled in two groups: Study Group (n= 100), including patients referred to PN with revision of both 2D computed tomography (CT) imaging and 3D model; Control group (n= 95), including patients referred to PN with revision of 2D CT imaging. Overall, 20 individuals were switched to radical nephrectomy (RN). The primary outcome was the impact of 3D models-based surgical planning on Trifecta achievement (defined as the contemporary absence of positive surgical margin, major complications and ≤30% postoperative eGFR reduction). The secondary outcome was the impact of 3D models on surgical planning of PN. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify predictors of selective clamping and Trifecta’s achievement in patients treated with PN (n=175).ResultsOverall, 73 (80.2%) patients in Study group and 53 (63.1%) patients in Control group achieved the Trifecta (p=0.01). The preoperative plan of arterial clamping was recorded as clampless, main artery and selective in 22 (24.2%), 22 (24.2%) and 47 (51.6%) cases in Study group vs. 31 (36.9%), 46 (54.8%) and 7 (8.3%) cases in Control group, respectively (p

Paraganglioma (PGL) is characterized by equivocal clinical manifestations and arriving to a suspicion might be challenging. Nevertheless, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine are a fundamental part of the diagnosis and management of this particular neuroendocrine tumor (NET). We herein report a rare case of bladder paraganglioma with unusual onset and typical PET/CT characteristics that led to its recognition.

BackgroundAtaxia is a rare neurological condition causing a deficit in the coordination of motor activities, preventing the fluidity of movements. Children with ataxia may show several different ataxic signs, along with difficulties in walking autonomously and ataxic gait often associated with trunk instability. Ataxic signs can be either acute or chronic, and in either case, the diagnosis can be extremely complex. Symptoms and their etiology are often widely heterogeneous, even within the same condition.MethodsThe guideline was developed based on the methodology defined by the Methodological Handbook of the Italian National Guideline System (SNLG) and was reported following the AGREE-II checklist. The SNLG methodology required the adoption of the GRADE approach for the whole development process. To facilitate the implementation of the contents and recommendations from the guideline, two care pathways were developed based on the NICE and the European Pathway Association (EPA) models.ResultsThe guideline included 28 clinical questions, 4 on the identification and management of acute ataxias, and 24 on the diagnosis and management of chronic ataxias. The document included 44 recommendations, 37 clinical recommendations, and 7 recommendations for research.ConclusionThe working group, despite the lack and methodological limitations of the evidence, deemed as essential to provide indications and recommendations, in particular in some clinically relevant areas. The care pathway was produced as a tool to facilitate the implementation of the contents and recommendations. The interactive version of the pathway is available on the SNLG website along with a leaflet dedicated to families and caregivers.

Enterococcus hirae is a rare pathogen in human infections, although its incidence may be underestimated due to its difficult isolation. We describe the first known case of E. hirae infective endocarditis (IE), which involves the mitral valve alone, and the seventh E. hirae IE worldwide. Case presentation: a 62-year-old male was admitted to our department with a five-month history of intermittent fever without responding to antibiotic treatment. His medical history included mitral valve prolapse, recent pleurisy, and lumbar epidural steroid injections due to lumbar degenerative disc disease. Pre-admission transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) showed mitral valve vegetation, and Enterococcus faecium was isolated on blood cultures by MALDI-TOF VITEK MS. During hospitalization, intravenous (IV) therapy with ampicillin and ceftriaxone was initiated, and E. hirae was identified by MALDI-TOF Bruker Biotyper on three blood culture sets. A second TEE revealed mitral valve regurgitation, which worsened due to infection progression. The patient underwent mitral valve replacement with a bioprosthetic valve and had an uncomplicated postoperative course; he was discharged after six weeks of IV ampicillin and ceftriaxone treatment.

BackgroundThe objective of this study was to determine whether hatha yoga is an efficacious adjunctive intervention for individuals with continued depressive symptoms despite antidepressant treatment.MethodWe conducted a randomized controlled trial of weekly yoga classes (n = 63) v. health education classes (Healthy Living Workshop; HLW; n = 59) in individuals with elevated depression symptoms and antidepressant medication use. HLW served as an attention-control group. The intervention period was 10 weeks, with follow-up assessments 3 and 6 months afterwards. The primary outcome was depression symptom severity assessed by blind rater at 10 weeks. Secondary outcomes included depression symptoms over the entire intervention and follow-up periods, social and role functioning, general health perceptions, pain, and physical functioning.ResultsAt 10 weeks, we did not find a statistically significant difference between groups in depression symptoms (b = -0.82, s.e. = 0.88, p = 0.36). However, over the entire intervention and follow-up period, when controlling for baseline, yoga participants showed lower levels of depression than HLW participants (b = -1.38, s.e. = 0.57, p = 0.02). At 6-month follow-up, 51% of yoga participants demonstrated a response (⩾50% reduction in depression symptoms) compared with 31% of HLW participants (odds ratio = 2.31; p = 0.04). Yoga participants showed significantly better social and role functioning and general health perceptions over time.ConclusionsAlthough we did not see a difference in depression symptoms at the end of the intervention period, yoga participants showed fewer depression symptoms over the entire follow-up period. Benefits of yoga may accumulate over time.

35. Environmental Education under Siege: Climate Radicality

- Abstract
The present article gravitates around the radical dilemma in which the evolution of the current human civilization has placed us. This route derives from certain global problems, such as most notably climate change, which have exacerbated the magnitude and complexity of the known socio-environmental problems. Avoiding the most extreme scenarios requires us to promote urgent structural social changes aimed at reorienting the course followed by the dominant development model, by undertaking a deep socioecological transition in an extremely short time -- during the next 10 or 15 years --, or face an imminent collapse of civilization. During the last fifty years, conventional environmental education has remained anchored in a set of environmental issues and problems to whose resolution it has contributed little, by promoting pedagogical strategies of individual change that lacked the necessary socio-political substrate and prospective vision that should stem from the increasingly evident environmental and social complexity. What can environmental education offer in order to face these terrible conditions? What alternatives are there to promote a reflexive citizenship that can modify the collision course with the limits of the biosphere in which we live? What means and tools can be used as a contribution to at least mitigate the collapse, considering that education cannot do everything? These questions are addressed in this article.

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) is a topic of increasing relevance across virtually all sectors of our society, with the potential for a significant impact on corporations and more broadly on our economy and society. While people are typically the most valuable asset of every organization, human resources (HR) in general, and D&I in particular, are dominated by qualitative approaches. This paper introduces an agent-based simulation that can quantify the impact of certain aspects of D&I on corporate performance. The simulation provides a parsimonious and compelling explanation of the impact of hiring and promotion biases on the resulting corporate gender balance, accurately replicating real-world data about gender imbalances across multiple industry sectors. In addition, the paper shows that the simulation can be used to predict the likely impact of different D&I interventions. Specifically, once a company has become imbalanced, even removing all promotion biases is not sufficient to rectify the situation, and it can take decades to undo the imbalances initially created by these biases. These and other results demonstrate that agent-based simulation is a powerful approach for managing D&I in corporate settings and could become an invaluable tool for the strategic and tactical management of human resources.

The accelerated growth of cities since the middle of the last century occupies a prominent place in urban agendas. The development of planning strategies depends on the knowledge and understanding this phenomenon. Therefore, identifying the modification pattern in the spatial configuration is of paramount importance. In this sense, the high level of detail offered by remote sensing technologies makes it possible to estimate the distribution of human settlements and their relationship to other coverages. The information obtained allows to analyze spatial contiguity and general expansion but other indicators are needed to identify spatial singularities. This work aims to present a compaction indicator and fragmentation indicator, useful for identifying local configuration patterns and their temporal variation. The study area consists of the Moreno, Pilar, Gral Rodriguez, Luján and Mercedes municipalities of the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) for the period 1986–2019. The results indicate an increase in impervious surfaces higher than 300% in this period and the detection of new urban centres in those municipalities. In the future it is hoped to replicate the techniques presented throughout the AMBA in order to contribute to medium and long-term territorial planning.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) in the detection of local recurrence of prostate cancer (PCa) with the evaluation of the added value of signal Intensity/Time (I/T) curves. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of 22 patients undergoing mpMRI from 2015 to 2020 was carried out, with the following inclusion criteria: performing transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy within 3 months in the case of positive or doubtful findings and undergoing biopsy and/or clinical follow-up for 24 months in the case of negative results. The images were reviewed, and the lesions were catalogued according to morphological, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and dynamic contrast- enhanced (DCE) features. Results: The presence of local recurrence was detected in 11/22 patients (50%). Greater diameter, hyperintensity on DWI, positive contrast enhancement and type 2/3 signal I/T curves were more frequently observed in patients with local recurrence (all p < 0.05). Of all the sequences, DCE was the most accurate; however, the combination of DCE and DWI showed the best results, with a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 82%, a negative predictive value of 100% and a positive predictive value of 85%. Conclusions: The utility of MRI in the detection of local recurrence is tied to the multiparametric approach, with all sequences providing useful information. A combination of DCE and DWI is particularly effective. Moreover, specificity could be additionally improved using analysis of the signal I/T curves.

It is presented the general properties of N-dimensional multi-component or many-particle systems exhibiting self-similar hierarchical structure. Assuming there exists an optimal coarse-graining scale at which the quality and diversity of the (box-counting) fractal dimensions exhibited by a given system are optimized, it is computed the generalized entropy of each hypercube of the partitioned system and shown that its shape is universal, as it also exhibits self-similarity and hence does not depend on the dimensionality N . For certain systems this shape may also be associated with the large time stationary profile of the fractal density distribution in the absence of external fields (or control)., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures This work has been submitted for publication to the proceedings of The Latin American Congress on Computational Intelligence (http://la-cci.org/)

Newborn. Breastfeeding. Weight loss. ,Pediatrics ,RJ1-570 ,Public aspects of medicine ,RA1-1270 - Abstract
As health professionals, we have memorized that “newborns can lose up to 10% of their birth weight during the first week of life and should regain it by two weeks of age”. However, this statement, which appears so accurate, comes from studies conducted in the 1960s, when medical knowledge and how newborns were fed were utterly different from what it is today. Currently, multiple factors contribute to the percentage of weight loss at birth and the rate at which this weight is regained. There are nomograms for exclusively breastfed and formula-fed newborns and those by vaginal or cesarean delivery. To meet the World Health Organization’s goal of exclusively breastfeeding newborns, it is essential to recognize that “loss of more than 10% of birth weight” does not represent the need for formula supplementation. When assessing these cases, we must consider several factors that influence the percentage of weight loss in newborns. Therefore, diagnostic decisions should always be individualized in favor of breastfeeding.

BackgroundThe increasing number of physicians leaving practice, especially hospitalists, has been well-documented. The most commonly examined factor associated with this exodus has been burnout. The COVID-19 pandemic has put a unique and unprecedented stress on hospitalists who have been at the front lines of patient care. Therefore, the investigation of burnout and its related factors in hospitalists is essential to preventing future physician shortages.ObjectiveThis study examined the relationship between burnout, second victim, and moral injury experiences before and during the COVID-19 pandemic among hospitalists.MethodsTwo anonymous cross-sectional surveys of hospitalists from a community hospital in the metropolitan Washington, DC area were conducted. One was conducted pre-COVID-19 (September-November 2019) and one was conducted during COVID-19 (July-August 2020). The surveys were sent to all full-time hospitalists via an online survey platform. A variety of areas were assessed including demographic (e.g., age, gender), work information (e.g., hours per week, years of experience), burnout, second victim experiences, well-being, and moral injury.ResultsBurnout rates among providers during these two time periods were similar. Second victim experiences remained prevalent in those who experienced burnout both pre and during COVID-19, but interestingly the prevalence increased in those without burnout during COVID-19. Moral injury was predictive of burnout during COVID-19.ConclusionWhile there were some factors that predicted burnout that were similar both pre- and during-pandemic, moral injury was unique to predicting burnout during COVID-19. With burnout as a contributing factor to future physician shortages, it is imperative that predictive factors in a variety of different environments are well understood to prevent future shortages. Hospitalists may be an excellent barometer of these factors given their presence on the front line during the pandemic, and their experiences need to be further explored so that targeted interventions aimed at addressing those factors may be created.

Ebola virus ,SARS-CoV-2 ,inactivation ,sterilization ,filovirus ,coronavirus ,Microbiology ,QR1-502 - Abstract
Viral pathogens with the potential to cause widespread disruption to human health and society continue to emerge or re-emerge around the world. Research on such viruses often involves high biocontainment laboratories (BSL3 or BSL4), but the development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics often uses assays that are best performed at lower biocontainment. Reliable inactivation is necessary to allow removal of materials to these spaces and to ensure personnel safety. Here, we validate the use of gamma irradiation to inactivate culture supernatants and pellets of cells infected with a representative member of the Filovirus and Coronavirus families. We show that supernatants and cell pellets containing SARS-CoV-2 are readily inactivated with 1.9 MRad, while Ebola virus requires higher doses of 2.6 MRad for supernatants and 3.8 MRad for pellets. While these doses of radiation inactivate viruses, proinflammatory cytokines that are common markers of virus infection are still detected with low losses. The doses required for virus inactivation of supernatants are in line with previously reported values, but the inactivation of cell pellets has not been previously reported and enables new approaches for analysis of protein-based host responses to infection.

46. Evaluating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: An Analysis of a Recent Critique

- Abstract
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a newer psychotherapy that has generated much clinical and research interest in recent years. However, the approach has begun to receive strong criticism from proponents of traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Hofmann and Asmundson (2008) recently compared and contrasted ACT and traditional CBT. They concluded that ACT's criticisms of traditional CBT are inaccurate; both ACT and CBT can be understood using a similar theoretical model; and there is no evidence that ACT represents a "third wave" of behavior therapy, as is sometimes claimed by its proponents. In the current article, I further analyze Hofmann and Asmundson's critique of ACT to determine its evidential merit and to attempt to clarify potential points of misunderstanding between CBT and ACT proponents.
