o ensure sustainable agricultural management, there is a need not only to quantify soil erosion rates but also to obtain information on the status of soil water content and soil loss under different soil types and land uses. A clear understanding of the temporal dynamics and the soil moisture spatial variability (SMSV) will help to control soil degradation by hydrological processes. This study represents the first attempt connecting cosmic-ray neutron sensors (CRNS) with soil erosion research, a novel approach to explore the complex relationships between soil water content (SWC) and soil redistribution processes using two of the most powerful nuclear techniques, CRNS and fallout 137Cs. Our preliminary results indicate that CRNS captured soil moisture dynamics along the study toposequence and demonstrated the sensitivity of neutron sensors to investigate the effect of parent material on soil water content. The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the comprehensive data from seven CRNS surveys revealed that one dominant spatial structure (EOF1) explains 89.2% of SMSV. The soil redistribution rates estimated with 137Cs at the nine locations along the hillslope, together with local factors related to soil properties (SOC, soil depth, hydraulic conductivity) and land use showed significant correlations with EOF. This study provides strong field evidence that soil type significantly affect SMSV, highlighting the key impact on soil erosion and sedimentation rates. Nevertheless, more research is needed to investigate the specific contributions of soil properties to the spatial variability of soil moisture and their subsequent effects on soil redistribution dynamics of interest for soil management.

In slopes of Mediterranean mid-mountain areas, land use and land cover changes linked to the abandonment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution; however, limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment scale. This paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management (through natural revegetation and afforestation) on soil redistribution rates using fallout 137Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment (0.45 km2, Central Spanish Pyrenees). A total of 52 soil core samples, distributed in a regular grid, from the first 30–40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were analysed. Fallout 137Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples. 137Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the catchment. Results show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area, while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area, but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation practices. However, the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term scale. The information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in Mediterranean mountain areas.

Mediterranean mountains are sensitive agroecosystems that have suffered intense land use and land cover changes (LULCC) during the last century. From the middle of the twentieth century, most of the cultivated lands in Mediterranean mountains were abandoned, allowing the recovery of vegetation (through natural revegetation and afforestation programmes). To examine the effects of farmland abandonment, secondary succession (natural revegetation) and afforestation, an intensive soil sampling was carried out in the Araguás catchment (Central Spanish Pyrenees) including sparsely vegetated areas (badlands), grasslands, shrublands and afforested sites. LULCC were mapped, and soil physico-chemical properties were analysed in reference sites (unaltered areas during the last centuries) and in the different land uses. Likewise, the soil organic carbon (SOC) content in the bulk soils and in the fractions separated by density fractionation have been studied. This study evidenced that farmland abandonment led to a mosaic landscape with different land use and land covers. Results show that LULCC significantly affect soil physico-chemical properties (soil texture, stoniness, pH, SOC, total carbon, CorgN ratio, bulk density and field capacity). Significant differences were observed between secondary and afforested sites following farmland abandonment. Afforestation triggered higher SOC than shrubland sites (natural revegetation) (1.4 and 1.1% respectively), suggesting a slower process of organic matter accumulation after farmland abandonment in the natural revegetation compared to afforestation. The significant role of grassland sites for enhancing the accumulation of SOC has been also confirmed. The results showed also significant differences in the relative contribution of each organic fraction to the bulk SOC: the amount of labile fraction (free and occluded labile fractions) is significantly higher in afforested and shrubland sites (58.1 and 51.2% respectively) than in grassland

Recent land use changes, the absence of soil protection between crop periods, and extreme precipitation events have been highlighted as major influential factors in the fluctuations of sediment export in the last decades at the catchment scale worldwide. In this regard, soil erosion and fine-particle export are two of the major concerns of soil nutrient loss and water-quality decrease (e.g., increasing turbidity and vector of chemicals). However, while rainfall effects have been well-monitored, recent land use changes and management need additional approaches to evaluate their effect. In Mediterranean mountainous environments, in addition to forest management, agricultural practices during different cropland stages likely increase sediment and particle-bound chemicals in the drainage system. Moreover, most catchments lack instrumentalization. Thus, there is a gap in the knowledge on the processes influencing the sediment exported in ungauged catchments. To evaluate the processes involved, remote sensing and seasonal sampling of suspended sediments were examined for 5 years in a representative agroforestry system in three sub-catchments (SBCs) with different proportions of land uses. Temporal trends of NDVI, EVI, MSAVI, SAVI, and NDWI indices were analyzed for monitoring the vegetation status. With this information, we attempt to evaluate the soil response in terms of particle size export to land use change, vegetation status, and precipitation distribution in fine-grained sediment-reaching streams. Our findings not only highlight the significant effect of heavy precipitation events and vegetation cover on the grain-size fraction of the exported sediment but also reveal the existence of more complex factors influencing the export dynamics. In the Cordillera Blanca, the glaciers delineated by some of the highest peaks in the tropical Peruvian Andes have experienced a fast retreat over the last few decades. At the foot of Artesonraju Peak, the glacier-fed river conveys fine sediments to Parón Lake, which is enclosed in the proglacial area created by the retreating glaciers of the unique confluence of the Huandoy, Chacraraju, Nevado Caraz and Artesonraju peaks (above 6000 m.a.s.l.). This research addresses the sediment contributions of main glacial landforms to sediment mixtures delivered to the river and lake system (1.6 km2) by applying novel conservativeness and consistency methods for tracer selection and a frequentist unmixing model. A total of 27 surface soil and sediment sources (0–3 cm) were sampled from moraines, alluvial fans and recent colluvium, and 10 composite sediment mixtures, including suspended sediments, were collected to identify the sediment provenance. The unmixing results reveal large variability of the contributing sources related to their predominance and the locations of the mixtures. The largest contributions were from moraines, in percentages varying from 28% to as much as 77%. Alluvial fans contributed between 23% and 47% of the sediments, and colluvium material contributed the least, between 6% and 28%. At the time of sampling, ice melt discharge incising moraines and alluvial fans and eroding riverbanks were the main mechanisms of fine sediment delivery. Runoff over the bare surfaces of recently exposed moraines and the lack of vegetation cover in very active landforms also control sediment mobilization. Overall, highly dynamic changes in this paraglacial environment involve active sediment fluxes accompanying snow and ice melt. Our results indicate that in high tropical mountains, shrinking glaciers expose new surfaces of glacial materials, which deliver fine sediments. Erosion causes significant soil and nutrient losses that can reach streams and degrade habitats. Phosphorus (P) is among the nutrients of greatest concern for water pollution. Due to the increase in the number of storm events over the last decade, which could rise further under climate change scenarios, a more in-depth analysis of the effect of rainfall on the behaviour of P in fragile environments is needed. Little is known about the mobilisation and export of P in mountainous Mediterranean agroecosystems. To contribute to this knowledge, this research analysed the variability of P in the sediments of streambeds of different orders in an agroforestry area of the Northern Ebro Basin (Aragón, Spain) following an exceptional rainfall event; the implications of different land uses were also explored. Sediment composition was assessed before and after the rainfall event in three nested subcatchments and then related to soil properties. Phosphorus was mostly linked to the mineral fraction (mainly to silicates), while the links between P with clay and organic matter (P-clay, P-OM) were very weak. The P-OM links occurred only in the soils of forested areas. Agricultural lands, which are prone to erosion and had the highest P concentrations, contribute to P release. However, the streambeds and the lateral erosion of channel banks by floods triggered by the rainfall event should be considered as the main contributors to the export of P. The high intensity rainfall event led to 35% and 60% reductions in clay and OM, respectively, and to an enrichment of P in the sediments, the concentrations of which were lower in the headwaters than downstream. This means that the P in streambeds remains exposed in relatively high concentrations following extreme rainfall events with implications for the P cycle and water pollution.

Sediment fingerprinting has emerged as a valuable tool for elucidating soil erosion processes and assessing the sources of sediment and particle-bound chemicals. Due to its upward trend in popularity and the parallel advances in analytical methods, different types of tracers such as Compound-Specific Stable Isotopes (CSSIs) have been incorporated to identify the potential sources. However, the physical processes of CSSIs, usually characterised by the ratio of two stable isotopes, also depends on the isotopic content requiring specific fingerprinting models. For this reason, isotopic tracers have not been combined with classical tracers such as the elemental composition. In this context, we i) propose a simple physical model describing the mixing of isotopic tracers, ii) derive the conservative balance (CB) governing the isotopic ratio of the mixture, iii) demonstrate that previous models for isotopic tracers are approximations of the proposed formulation, and iv) obtain an exact transformation combining the isotopic ratio and the isotopic content into a virtual elemental tracer. The CB model was successfully validated and tested in three fingerprint datasets from published isotopic tracer studies, demonstrating the equivalence of the proposed transformation. Compared to previously reported methods, the CB has two advantages: the model enables the analysis of isotopic tracers using classical unmixing models and, at the same time, allows the combined use of isotopic and elemental tracers. Within the CB framework the Consensus and the Consistent Tracer Selection (CTS) methods can also be applied to isotopic tracers, which is critical for a correct fingerprinting analysis. The effect of combining both types of tracers is illustrated in a dataset composed of elemental and CSSI tracers. The results support its compatibility and reveal an increase in the discriminant capacity and better-defined results for the channel bank source when combining elemental and CSSI tracers.
