1. Advanced and versatile signal conditioning for GNSS receivers using the high-rate DFT-based data manipulator (HDDM)

Abstract

Proper signal conditioning is crucial for reliable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) navigation. Signal conditioning includes correcting receiver front-end distortions, shaping noise, removing interferences, and altering the received signal. The high-rate DFT-based data manipulator (HDDM) is a versatile signal processing architecture based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). In this article, the HDDM is theoretically modeled, analyzed, and evaluated. Some applications are presented, including interference mitigation, spectrum reconstruction, overlay signal design, altering signal modulations, and signal equalization. Additionally, the complexity of one concrete hardware implementation is investigated. The HDDM has shown excellent results with interference mitigation, and it can simultaneously achieve other signal conditioning tasks. Processing several tasks with the same nested architecture provides a significant processing benefit compared to discrete processing architectures. It emphasizes the benefits of a single architecture to simultaneously address several signal condition tasks, as opposed to separate structures requiring significantly more processing or poorer synergy.

Abstract

IntroductionLate-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD, onset age > 60 years) is the most prevalent dementia in the elderly1, and risk is partially driven by genetics2. Many of the loci responsible for this genetic risk were identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS)3–8. To identify additional LOAD risk loci, the we performed the largest GWAS to date (89,769 individuals), analyzing both common and rare variants. We confirm 20 previous LOAD risk loci and identify four new genome-wide loci (IQCK, ACE, ADAM10, and ADAMTS1). Pathway analysis of these data implicates the immune system and lipid metabolism, and for the first time tau binding proteins and APP metabolism. These findings show that genetic variants affecting APP and Aβ processing are not only associated with early-onset autosomal dominant AD but also with LOAD. Analysis of AD risk genes and pathways show enrichment for rare variants (P = 1.32 × 10−7) indicating that additional rare variants remain to be identified.

Abstract

Introduction: There is conflicting evidence whether high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. Genetic variation in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) locus is associated with altered HDL-C. We aimed to assess AD risk by genetically predicted HDL-C. Methods: Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms within the CETP locus predicting HDL-C were applied to the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) exome chip stage 1 results in up 16,097 late onset AD cases and 18,077 cognitively normal elderly controls. We performed instrumental variables analysis using inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger. Results: Based on 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms distinctly predicting HDL-C in the CETP locus, we found that HDL-C was not associated with risk of AD (P >.7). Abstract

Introduction: There is conflicting evidence whether high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. Genetic variation in the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) locus is associated with altered HDL-C. We aimed to assess AD risk by genetically predicted HDL-C. Methods: Ten single nucleotide polymorphisms within the CETP locus predicting HDL-C were applied to the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP) exome chip stage 1 results in up 16,097 late onset AD cases and 18,077 cognitively normal elderly controls. We performed instrumental variables analysis using inverse variance weighting, weighted median, and MR-Egger. Results: Based on 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms distinctly predicting HDL-C in the CETP locus, we found that HDL-C was not associated with risk of AD (P >.7). Discussion: Our study does not support the role of HDL-C on risk of AD through HDL-C altered by CETP. This study does not rule out other mechanisms by which HDL-C affects risk of AD.

Abstract

The advancement in performance of mobile devices goes hand in hand with increasing demand for communication bandwidth. In the past decade an almost unmanageable number of different wireless communication standards has emerged. In addition, the complexity of many of those standards has led to a steadily increasing demand for high performance modem signal processing. Future SDR baseband processing can significantly benefit from the massive parallelism provided by homogeneous many-core architectures. In this chapter, the CoreVA-MPSoC is presented as an example of an embedded hierarchical multiprocessor architecture for SDR processing. Parallelism is introduced at different levels of the CoreVA-MPSoC: basic building block is the resource-efficient VLIW processor CoreVA, providing fine-grained concurrency at the instruction level. Multiple CoreVA CPUs are combined within a CPU cluster and connected via a high speed, low latency interconnect. Finally, a dedicated Network on Chip is used to combine an arbitrary number of CPU clusters on a single chip. In addition to the hardware architecture, an MPSoC compiler for streaming applications is presented and utilized for the mapping of SDR applications to the CoreVA-MPSoC under throughput, latency, energy, and memory constraints.

Abstract

Safety & Security Engineering, due to its special nature, represents an interdisciplinary area of research and applications that brings together, in a systemic view, many disciplines of engineering, from the most traditional to the most advanced and novel. Safety & Security Engineering is characterized by a totally new approach since it first analyzes the hazard context not only by means of traditional tools but also by means of risk analysis techniques and then manages the above mentioned context through technical solutions, installations, systems, human resources and procedures to prevent and face incidental events, natural and voluntary, that could damage people or goods. The purpose of the fourth International Conference on Safety and Security Engineering (SAFE 2011) was to continue to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the most recent developments in the theoretical and practical aspects of Safety and Security Engineering. 42. From run-time reconfigurable coarse-grain arrays to application-specific accelerator design

Abstract

This Thesis focuses on the acceleration of different applications using a run-time reconfigurable array. In the cases under study, the author analyzes the main causes of performance degradation, which are classified as external and internal causes. The author proposes different solutions to reduce the impact of external causes. The adoption of mechanisms to reduce the external overheads give improvements of 10X in average. The logic to reduce the communication overhead occupies 0.6% of the total area but gives a speed-up of 15X for the transfer speed and 3X reduction of the overall cost of the transfers. The new reconfiguration infrastructure gives an 8% improvement for the maximum working frequency. The dynamic reconfiguration allows to hide the cost of reconfiguration behind the CREMA processing activity. The same consideration applies for the control operations. In addition the author considers the internal causes of performance degradation and proposes a new model that can be easily adapted to a chosen application. For this purpose the author presents a template called CREMA, that can be tailored to the application requirements, but keeps the possibility to share its internal resources using run-time reconfiguration. This new model can be used as a method to realize application-specific accelerators. The new design presents an application-specific accelerator that is 3X-4.5X smaller than the previous general-purpose device and 1.5X-5X faster. Mapping of SDR kernels shows figures that approach the real-time specifications.
