Aalenian-Bajocian phylloceratid ammonites, typically oceanic, are being increasingly recorded in the Neuquén Basin. In this paper we describe three species, one of them new: Costiphylloceras limayense n. sp. The other two are: Phylloceras perplanum (Prinz) and Calliphylloceras cf. achtalense (Redlich). According to the literature Calliphylloceras and Phylloceras are the most common phylloceratid genera in the Andean Aalenian.

Como metodología, se realizaron salidas de campo con especialistas en geología, paleobotánica, flora-fauna y usos tradicionales para el relevamiento e inventario georreferenciado de las paradas interpretativas e instalaciones actuales del área e identificación de geositios actuales y potenciales que pudieran surgir (perfiles litoestratigráficos, leños fósiles y sectores con comunidades/especies de flora representativos y con valor cultural asociado). Para el análisis de los umbrales ambientales, se aplicaron de manera combinada las metodologías LAC (Límites de cambio aceptable) y VERP (Proceso de protección de la experiencia de los visitantes y de los recursos).

A new collection of ammonites from the Picunleufuense Zone (standard base of the Andean Tithonian) of the locality Estancia María Juana (southern Neuquén Basin, Argentina) has provided abundant and well preserved material of new transients of Indansites picunleufuense and Choicensisphinctes platyconus. These transients are described and a detailed review of the early evolution of the Indansites lineage is presented. The meaning of changes in rib density, variations within the microconchs (males) and the length of the bodychamber in Indansites picunleufuense are discussed. It is concluded that the changes in rib density which characterize the successive macroconchs of the transients indicate changes in the rate of shell-growth. The more densely ribbed phragmocone of later transients would have had lower growth rates, which would also explain their smaller adult size. The microconchs show high variation in adult size suggesting high plasticity in the size-age maturation, most likely caused by influence of seasonal environmental conditions. A small collection of ammonites from the outcrops of the Los Catutos Member (Vaca Muerta Formation) in Cuchillo Curá indicates a stratigraphic position in the upper Internispinosum Zone. This ammonite assemblage is composed of Cieneguiticeras aff. falculatum (Steuer), Lingulaticeras sp. A, Haploceratoidea indet. (Lamellaptychus), Choicensisphinctes sp. A, Zapalia triplex (Zeiss & Leanza), Catutosphinctes cf. inflatus (Leanza), Catutosphinctes sp. A, Parodontoceras cf. calistoides (Behrendsen), Aspidoceras euomphalum (Steuer), Toulisphinctes cf. rafaeli (Oppel), and Windhauseniceras internispinsoum (Krantz). The record of C. aff. falculatum in the studied outcrop extends the stratigraphic range of the genus, which thus spans from the lowermost Tithonian Picunleufuense Zone up to the upper Internispinosum Zone. P. cf. calistoides is the oldest known record for the genus Parodontoceras. A detailed lithostratigraphic study of the Quintuco Fm in the Cerro Mallín Quemado area (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta) has provided the opportunity to review the conflictive diversity of interpretations proposed in the last 40 years for this unit. In the study area the Quintuco Fm shows a heterolithic succession about 80 m-thick. This succession is composed of interbedded sandy mudstones, wacky sandstones and fine to medium-grained sandstones in a coarsening-upwards arrangement. Thin coquiniferous levels occur interestratified towards the medium and upper parts of the stratigraphic column. The underlying offshore Vaca Muerta Fm-facies, developed under euxinic to anoxic conditions change gradually towards the dysoxic, storm waves-influenced conditions of the offshore transition zone of the Quintuco Fm-facies. Upwards the Quintuco Fm passes gradationally to shoreface sandy deposits of the Mulichinco Fm. The transition between both units is defined in a short section of the sedimentary column. The Quintuco Fm can be clearly recognized, and differentiated from the contiguous units, following the lithologic characterization of the original definition. There are important discrepancies in its determination among the authors. The main source of these discrepancies has been the use of biostratigraphic, chronostratigraphic and/or sequence-stratigraphic criteria. Once recognized the lithostratigraphic unit from the observed lithology in the section, the ammonites collected from there were studied in order to date these rocks and to establish regional time-correlation. These ammonites indicate the Quintuco Fm in the study area is Berriasian in age. This age was obtained from the chronostratigraphic zones estimated from the ammonite biostratigraphy of the studied section. Towards northern positions in the basin, e.g. Pampa Tril area, the age of the Quintuco Fm is early Valanginian. This pattern of the units becoming younger towards north reflects the shoreline progradation towards the basin. Litofacies y edad de la Formación Quintuco (Cretácico Inferior) en el área de Mallín Quemado (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta, Cuenca Neuquina, Argentina). Implicancias estratigráficas y depositacionales. A partir de un estudio detallado de la litoestratigrafía de la Formación Quintuco en el área del Cerro Mallín Quemado (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta) se efectuó una revisión de las numerosas interpretaciones de esta unidad propuestas en los últimos 40 años. En el área estudiada la Formación Quintuco muestra una sucesión heterolítica de unos 80 m de espesor. La sucesión está compuesta por limolitas arenosas interestratificadas, areniscas grauvaquicas y areniscas de grano fino a mediano, con un arreglo de tamaño de grano creciente hacia arriba. Hacia las partes media y superior de la columna estratigráfica se presentan delgados niveles coquiníferos interestratificados. Las facies subyacentes de la Formación Vaca Muerta, que se han desarrollado bajo condiciones euxínicas a anóxicas, pasan hacia arriba gradualmente a condiciones disóxicas, influenciadas por olas de tormenta de la zona de transición correspondiente a las facies de la Formación Quintuco. Hacia arriba la Formación Quintuco pasa gradacionalmente a depósitos arenosos costeros correspondientes a la Formación Mulichinco. La transición entre estas dos últimas unidades está definida en un corto tramo de la columna sedimentaria. La Formación Quintuco puede reconocerse claramente y diferenciarse de las unidades contiguas a partir de la caracterización litológica de la definición original. Existen importantes discrepancias entre los distintos autores acerca de su determinación. La principal fuente de estas discrepancias ha sido el uso de criterios bioestratigráficos, cronoestratigráficos y/o de estratigrafía secuencial. Una vez reconocida la unidad litoestratigráfica a partir de la litología observada en la sección analizada, los amonites allí muestreados fueron estudiados con el objetivo de datar estas rocas y establecer correlaciones temporales regionales. Estos amonites indican que la Formación Quintuco es de edad Berriasiana. Esta edad fué obtenida a partir de las zonas cronoestratigráficas estimadas a partir de la bioestratigrafía de dichos amonites. Hacia posiciones del norte de la cuenca, e.g. Pampa Tril, la edad de la Formación Quintuco corresponde al Valanginiano temprano. Este patrón de las unidades siendo mas jóvenes hacia el norte refleja la progradación de la línea de costa hacia el interior de cuenca. A.C. Materials and methods

The sedimentary succession corresponding to the Vaca Muerta Fm (Tithonian-Lower Valanginian) at Pampa Tril (Neuquén Basin, Argentina) is described in detail. In this framework, the ammonite succession, sampled bed-by-bed, is described for first time. The Vaca Muerta Fm reaches 421.6 m in thickness in the study area, consisting of a succession of shales (strongly bituminous in the lower part) with several relatively thin intercalations of calcareous shales and fine-grained sandstones; it overlies the Tordillo Fm (Kimmeridgian continental sandstones) and underlies the Quintuco Fm (Lower Valanginian greenish gray claystones). The scope and definition of the Quintuco Fm are shortly reviewed. Four lithofacies are differentiated in the Vaca Muerta Fm: (1) bituminous shale: gray to black, fine-grained clastic deposits with high organic matter contents, calcareous concretions, and abundant fossils, (2) sandy shale: moderate contents of organic matter, lighter in colour, with tuffaceous sandstone levels intercalated, and few fossils, (3) calcareous shale: carbonate material with varying proportions of fine-grained epiclastics and organic matter, forming thick-massive beds of marly aspect and conchoidal fracture, with moderately abundant fossils (ammonites and marine reptiles), and (4) finegrained sandstone: psamitic components (quartz grains) with total absence of pelitic components and minimal contents of organic matter, scarcely fossiliferous. Volcanic ash evidences the activity of the western magmatic arc. Storm event records are frequent and recurrent all throughout the succession. The sequence reflects an upward-shallowing marine environment with euxinic-anoxic passing to dysoxic conditions, and increasing input of terrigenous epiclastics along an outer ramp. The fauna of the succession is composed mainly of ammonites, followed by bivalves, gastropods, reptiles, fishes, and nautiloids. Ammonites occur in abundance throughout the sequence, mainly in the calcareous and sandstone levels. Nine ammonite families are represented in the fauna, including 35 genera, of which one is new: Lytoceratidae (Lytoceras), Ataxioceratidae (Lithacoceras, Choicensisphinctes, Krantziceras, Catutosphinctes, Mazatepites, Paraboliceras), Neocomitidae (Parodontoceras, Pseudoparodontoceras gen. nov., Substeueroceras, Blanfordiceras, Neocosmoceras, Argentiniceras, Raimondiceras, Cuyaniceras, Subthurmannia, Thurmanniceras, Pseudoblanfordia, Lissonia, Pseudofavrella), Olcostephanidae (Groebericeras, Spiticeras, Aspidostephanus), Himalayitidae (Windhauseniceras, Corongoceras, Himalayites), Aspidoceratidae (Physodoceras, Pseudhimalayites, Toulisphinctes), Haploceratidae (Haploceras), Lissoceratidae (Pseudolissoceras), and Oppeliidae (Metahaploceras, Pasottia, Parastreblites, Cieneguiticeras). The fauna (especially the perisphinctoids) is dominated by adult and juvenile macroconchs whereas adult microconchs are very scarce. Lithacoceras picunleufuense is very well represented by adult macroconchs which show clearly the aspect of the successive transients from the very base of the Andean Tithonian sequence. The genera Choicensisphinctes and Catutosphinctes are also well represented throughout the Tithonian, exhibiting the main evolutionary changes of the lineages. The well controlled stratigraphic distribution of the 55 species described allows, considering the succession of their assemblages, a rather confident chronostratigraphic subdivision of the column at zonal level. Furthermore, the recognition of fourteen ammonite biohorizons (four of them tentatively) increases notably the resolution of the cronostratigraphic subdivision, enabling much more precise time-correlations. Three of these biohorizons are new: internispinosum alfa Hz. (base of a standard Internispinosum Zone), azulense Hz. (Alternans Zone), and koeneni Hz. (Koeneni Zone). The Internispinosum (Tithonian) as well as the Noduliferum and Damesi zones (Berriasian) are standarized by fixation of their bases by means of biohorizons. The rich succession studied allows to time-correlate some few Andean horizons with the Tethyan Primary Standard Scale through the Tithonian and Berriasian. For first time the tipically Tethyan Berriasian Subthurmannia boissieri is documented confidently from horizoned samples (well preserved macroconchs) in the upper Noduliferum-Damesi zones interval. Estratigrafía y fauna de amonites de la Formación Vaca Muerta (Tithoniano-Valanginiano Inferior) en Pampa Tril, Cuenca Neuquina, Argentina. La sucesión sedimentaria correspondiente a la Fm Vaca Muerta (TithonianoValanginiano Inferior) en Pampa Tril se describe detalladamente. En este contexto, la sucesión de amonites, muestreada estrato por estrato, se describe por primera vez. La Fm Vaca Muerta presenta un espesor de 421.6 m, y consiste en una sucesión de lutitas (fuertemente bituminosas en la parte inferior) con numerosos intercalaciones de pizarras calcáreas y areniscas finas. La Fm Vaca Muerta yace sobre la Fm Tordillo (areniscas continentales kimmeridgianas) y subyace a la Fm Quintuco (arcillitas verde-grisáceas del Valanginiano Inferior). El alcance y la definición de la Fm Quintuco son revisados aprovechando la información obtenida en el presente relevamiento. Cuatro litofacies son diferenciadas en la Fm Vaca Muerta: (1) lutita bituminosa: depósitos clásticos finos, grises a negros, con alto contenido de materia orgánica, abundantes concreciones calcáreas y abundantes fósiles, (2) lutita arenosa: color mas claro, contenido de material orgánica moderado, niveles de arenisca tobácea intercalados, pocos fósiles, (3) lutita calcárea: material calcáreo con proporciones variadas de material epiclástico finamente granulado y materia orgánica, formando capas gruesas masivas con aspecto margoso y fractura concoidal, fósiles moderadamente abundantes (amonites y reptiles marinos), y (4) arenisca fina: componentes psamíticos (granos de cuarzo) con total ausencia de componentes pelíticos y mínimo de materia orgánica, fósiles escasos. La presencia de ceniza volcánica evidencia la actividad volcánica del arco magmático occidental. Através de toda la sucesión hay frecuentes y recurrentes registros de eventos de tormentas. La sucesión refleja un ambiente marino de somerización progresiva con condiciones anóxico-euxínicas pasando a disóxicas, y un incremento del ingreso de epiclásticos terrigenos a lo largo de una rampa distal. La fauna de la sucesión está compuesta principalmente por amonites, seguidos por bivalvos, gastrópodos, reptiles, peces y nautiloideos. Amonites se presentan en abundancia a través de toda la secuencia, principalmente en los niveles calcáreos y areniscas. Nueve familias de amonites están representadas en la fauna, incluyendo 35 géneros de los cuales uno es nuevo: Lytoceratidae (Lytoceras), Ataxioceratidae (Lithacoceras, Choicensisphinctes, Krantziceras, Catutosphinctes, Mazatepites, Paraboliceras), Neocomitidae (Parodontoceras, Pseudoparodontoceras gen. nov., Substeueroceras, Blanfordiceras, Neocosmoceras, Argentiniceras, Raimondiceras, Cuyaniceras, Subthurmannia, Thurmanniceras, Pseudoblanfordia, Lissonia, Pseudofavrella), Olcostephanidae (Groebericeras, Spiticeras, Aspidostephanus), Himalayitidae (Windhauseniceras, Corongoceras, Himalayites), Aspidoceratidae (Physodoceras, Pseudhimalayites, Toulisphinctes), Haploceratidae (Haploceras), Lissoceratidae (Pseudolissoceras), y Oppeliidae (Metahaploceras, Pasottia, Parastreblites, Cieneguiticeras). La fauna (especialmente los perisphinctoideos) está dominada por macroconchas adultas y juveniles mientras que las microconchas son muy escasas. Lithacoceras picunleufuense está muy bien representada por macroconchas adultas que muestran claramente el aspecto de los sucesivos transients a partir de base de la secuencia del Tithoniano andino. La detallada distribución estratigráfica de las 55 especies de amonites permite, considerando la sucesión de asociaciones, establecer una consistente subdivisión cronoestratigráfica de la columna a nivel zonal. Además, el reconocimiento de catorce bio-horizontes de amonites (cuatro de ellos tentativamente) incrementa sustancialmente la resolución en la subdivision cronoestratigráfica, lo cual posibilita correlaciones temporales mucho mas precisas, e.i. alta resolución. Tres de estos biohorizontes son nuevos: el Hz. internispinosum alfa (base de una Zona Internispinosum estándar), el Hz. azulense (Zona Alternans), y el Hz. koeneni (Zona Koeneni). La Z. Internispinosum (Tithoniano andino) así como las zonas Noduliferum y Damesi (Berriasiano andino) son estandarizadas mediante la fijación de sus bases por un biohorizonte de amonites. La rica sucesión estudiada pemite correlacionar temporalmente algunos horizontes andinos con partes del Tithoniano y Berriasiano de la Escala Primaria Estándar del Tethys. Por primera vez el berriasélido tethysiano Subthurmannia boissieri (macroconchas bien preservadas) se documenta a partir de muestras posicionadas exactamente en niveles de un intervalo determinado por las zonas Noduliferum (parte superior)-Damesi. The ammonite fauna of the Lower Tithonian of the locality Estancia María Juana, southern Neuquén Basin is described for first time. The studied material was collected from the Portada Covunco Member (lower part of the Vaca Muerta Formation) which consists of finely sandy shaly marls with large concretions containing abundant crushed ammonites, aptychi, bivalves and gastropods. The ammonites belong to the species Choicensisphinctes choicensis and Lithacoceras picunleufuense transient a, indicating the picunleufuense a Horizon, which is the base of the Lower Tithonian Picunleufuense standard chronostratigraphic Zone. Middle Tithonian ammonites occur as poorly preserved specimens of Catutosphinctes in calcareous sandstones. An aptychus, collected from a concretion, among the bulk of Choicensisphinctes choicensis is of the Praestriaptuchus-type and is concluded it belongs to this ammonite. This association gives additional support to the hypothesis on the origin of Choicensisphinctes from L. picunleufuense in the Late Kimmeridgian or earliest Tithonian. The concretions of the picunleufuense a Horizon are interpreted as late diagenetic, showing that this kind of concretions are among the few marine sedimentary settings where ammonites with their aptychus in-situ could have been preserved. Se reconocen dentro de la sucesión sedimentaria atribuida al “Loteniense” o “Formación Lotena” en el área del anticlinal de Picún Leufú, dos unidades litoestratigráficas cuya relación de contacto está delineada a través de una superficie de discontinuidad de gran extensión regional. Se propone el nombre de Formación Mutrucó (nov.) para identificar a los antiguamente denominados “conglomerados basales del loteniense”, caracterizados por el desarrollo de depósitos gravosos gruesos de origen aluvial-costero, con retrabajo bajo influencia marina. Se restringe el nombre de Fm. Lotena (emend.) para denominar a la sucesión clástica fina caracterizada por la presencia de depósitos marinos someros, desarrollados entre los sectores de anteplaya inferior a plataforma interna bajo la influencia de oleaje y ocasionales eventos de tormentas (tempestitas). La sucesión de amonites de la Fm. Lotena (emend.), por primera vez descripta en detalle incluyendo especies no registrados anteriormente, permite asignar esta unidad a una posición cronoestratigráfica fehaciente. La sucesión de amonites representa claramente los horizontes patagoniensis y Choffatia de la Zona (cronoestatigráfica estándar) Patagoniensis. Esta zona cronoestratigráfica se correlaciona con la Zona Athleta del Caloviano Superior de la clasificación cronoestratigráfica estándar primaria internacional. Sobre la base de la información bioestratigráfica se asigna la Fm. Lotena (emend.) al Caloviano Superior (y con dudas a la parte baja del Oxfordiano Inferior, Zona Pressulus), mientras que la Fm. Mutrucó (nov.) es atribuida en función de sus relaciones estratigráficas al Caloviano Medio. Stratigraphy and ammonite fauna of the “Lotenian” deposits (Middle Callovian-Lower Oxfordian?) at the Picún Leufú anticline, Neuquén Basin, Picún Leufú Sub-basin, Argentina. The study area is located near the bridge of the National Road 40 on the Arroyo Picún Leufú, about 45 km south of Zapala Town in the Neuquén Province. The studied outcrops are approximately aligned along the Picún Leufú Anticline in the southern part of the Neuqúen Basin. The objective of this paper is to present the results of a detailed stratigraphical and palaeontological study of the Lotena Formation (s.l.). The Neuquén Basin consisted of an ensialic depression in southwestern South America originated in the MiddleLate Triassic in the western margin of the Gondwana Continent. Through the tectonic evolution of this basin there was a topographically positive structure named Dorsal de Huincul or Huincul Arc which acted intermitently dividing the basin asymetrically. South of the Huincul Arc developed a depocenter named Picún Leufú Sub-basin (PLSB) to which the studied deposits of the Lotena Formarion belong. In the PLSB the Lotena Group includes the Lotena, Fortín 1° de Mayo and Barda Negra (subcrop) formations. The Lotena Fm was originally roughly defined including deposits very different genetically, thus producing different interpretations, especially considering its vertical extent and the relationships between the deposits south and north of the Huincul Arc. The current interpretation of the Lotena Fm is as a succesion of conglomerates at the base followed by a thicker succession of yellowish-gray siltstones and yellowish-green claystones with ammonites and ostreids. Along the Neuquén Basin, the “Lotenian” (Lotena Group) includes coarse epiclastic deposits presented as thin horizons of conglomerates and/or coarse sandstones which have been linked to the dynamics of the margins of the basin and, especially, to the Huincul Arc. The basal conglomerate horizon in the section of the Lotena Group at Picún Leufú is herein differentiated from the Lotena Formation as a new lilhostratigraphic unit named Mutrucó Formation (nov.). The pelitic deposits overlying the Mutrucó Fm (nov.) become to conform a restricted Lotena Fm (emend.). The type locality of the Mutrucó Fm (nov.) is the Cañadón Mutrucó (from the Mapuche: Mutrú, agrio; Co, agua). The characteristic lithology consists of 4-5 m of moderately consolidate, coarse, gray conglomerates in the form of tabular bodies with wide lateral extension. The palaeoenvironmental analyisis indicates that the sedimentary processes which produced the deposits of the Mutrucó Fm (nov.) were under marine-alluvial influence. In the Cerro Lotena area the unit may reach a thickness of 16 m. The pelitic deposits overlying the Mutrucó Fm (nov.) and underlying the Fortín 1° de Mayo Fm (conglomerates) conform the Lotena Fm. (emend.). The type locality of the Lotena Fm s.l. has remained undefined, roughly in the Cerro Lotena area, for it is herein designated formally at Cañadón Mutrucó. The Lotena Fm (emend.) is composed by poorly consolidated, pelitic and finely psamitic deposits with thin calcareous siltstone levels commonly fossiliferous. The predominance of fine, light colour sediments with isolated coarse intercalations, and the occurrence of a diverse fossil macrofauna indicate shallow marine conditions, a sedimentary environment in the lower shoreface or inner shelf. The ammonite fauna has been sampled bed-by-bed in order to obtain a succession adequate for a reliable timecorrelation of the Lotena Fm, which had been remained uncertain. The ammonites collected show a moderately diverse local fauna, composed by at least six species belonging to four subfamilies (Hecticoceratinae, Reineckeiinae, Pseudoperisphinctinae and Perisphinctinae). Most of the species have been classified in open nomenclature because of the persistent scarcity and poor preservation of the ammonites in the upper Callovian of the Neuquén Basin. The species indentified are: Hecticoceras cf. lairense (Waagen), Rehmannia patagoniensis (Weaver), transients  and , Rehmannia? sp., Choffatia cf. isabellae Bonnot et al., Alligaticeras? aff. raguini (Gerard & Contaut), and Bol. This same ammonite succession is known from better material already described from the patagoniensis Horizon and Choffatia Horizon of the Upper Callovian Patagoniensis (standard chronostratigraphic) Zone of Manzano Escondido, just north of the Huincul Arc. The later transient  of R. patagoniensis has no tubercles on the phragmocone and the bodychamber has a single row of the conical tubercles typical of the species. These specimens closely resemble Jaspeiceras covacevichi Gröschke & Kossler from the upper Callovian/lower Oxfordian of Chile, suggesting Jaspeiceras Gröschke & Kossler could have originated from R. patagoniensis during the Late Callovian. Based on the ammonite succession of the Lotena Fm (emend.), it is concluded confidently that the lower part of this unit is Late Callovian in age, mainly Athleta Zone of the Primary International Standard Chronostratigraphic scale. The upper part of the Lotena Fm (emend.), where no ammonites were found, could be latest Late Callovian to Early Oxfordian in age. The Mutrucó Fm. (nov.) has not yielded ammonites, thus its age is estimated approximately Middle Callovian on the basis of its stratigraphic relationships only. Fil: Garrido, Alberto C.
