Search

Outflowing gas from supermassive black holes in the centers of active galaxies has been postulated as a major contributor to galactic evolution. To explore the interaction between narrow-line region (NLR) outflows and their host galaxies, we use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra and Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) images of 15 nearby (z < 0.02) active galactic nuclei (AGN) to determine the extents and geometries of their NLRs. We combine new HST WFC3 continuum and [O III] $\lambda$5007A images of 11 AGN with 4 archival AGN to match existing spectra from HST STIS. For the 6 AGN with suitable long-slit coverage of their NLRs, we use isophotal fitting of ground-based images, continuum-subtracted [O III] images, and the STIS spectra, to resolve, measure, and de-project the gas kinematics to the plane of the host galaxy disk and distinguish NLR outflows from galaxy rotation and/or kinematically disturbed gas. We find an average [O III] extent of $\sim$680pc with a correlation between gas extent and [O III] luminosity of R$_\mathrm{[O III]}$ $\propto$ L$_{\text{[O III]}}^{0.39}$. The measured extents depend strongly on the depth of the [O III] images, highlighting the importance of adopting uniform thresholds when analyzing scaling relationships. The outflows reach from 39-88% of the full NLR extents, and we find that all 6 of the AGN with STIS coverage of their entire NLRs show strong kinematic evidence for outflows, despite previous uncertainty for these AGN. This suggests that NLR outflows are ubiquitous in moderate luminosity AGN and that standard criteria for kinematic modeling are essential for identifying outflows., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ on July 9, 2024. Understanding the extent and role of inhomogeneity is a pivotal challenge in the physics of cuprate superconductors. While it is known that structural and electronic inhomogeneity is prevalent in the cuprates, it has proven difficult to disentangle compound-specific features from universally relevant effects. We combine advanced neutron and x-ray diffuse scattering with numerical modeling, which enables us to obtain insight into bulk structural correlations in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$. This cuprate exhibits a high optimal transition temperature of nearly 100 K, pristine charge-transport behavior, and a simple average crystal structure without long-range structural instabilities, and is therefore uniquely suited for investigations of intrinsic inhomogeneity. We uncover diffuse reciprocal-space patterns that correspond to nanoscale correlations of atomic displacements predominant perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. The real-space nature of the correlations is revealed through three-dimensional pair distribution function analysis and complementary numerical refinement. We find that relative displacements of ionic and CuO$_2$ layers play a crucial role, and that the structural inhomogeneity is not directly caused by the presence of conventional point defects. The observed correlations are therefore intrinsic to HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$, and thus likely important for the physics of cuprates more broadly. It is possible that the structural correlations are closely related to the unusual superconducting correlations and Mott-localization in these complex oxides. The experimental and analysis tools developed here for large volumes of diffuse scattering data can be expected to aid future investigations of a wide range of materials, especially as advances in scattering techniques present researchers with more comprehensive data to be analyzed., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

In robotic control tasks, policies trained by reinforcement learning (RL) in simulation often experience a performance drop when deployed on physical hardware, due to modeling error, measurement error, and unpredictable perturbations in the real world. Robust RL methods account for this issue by approximating a worst-case value function during training, but they can be sensitive to approximation errors in the value function and its gradient before training is complete. In this paper, we hypothesize that Lipschitz regularization can help condition the approximated value function gradients, leading to improved robustness after training. We test this hypothesis by combining Lipschitz regularization with an application of Fast Gradient Sign Method to reduce approximation errors when evaluating the value function under adversarial perturbations. Our empirical results demonstrate the benefits of this approach over prior work on a number of continuous control benchmarks.

Understanding spin and lattice excitations in a metallic magnetic ordered system form the basis to unveil the magnetic and lattice exchange couplings and their interactions with itinerant electrons. Kagome lattice antiferromagnet FeGe is interesting because it displays rare charge density wave (CDW) deep inside the antiferromagnetic ordered phase that interacts with the magnetic order. We use neutron scattering to study the evolution of spin and lattice excitations across the CDW transition $T_{\rm CDW}$ in FeGe. While spin excitations below $\sim$100 meV can be well described by spin waves of a spin-1 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, spin excitations at higher energies are centered around the Brillouin zone boundary and extend up to $\sim180$ meV consistent with quasiparticle excitations across spin-polarized electron-hole Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, $c$-axis spin wave dispersion and Fe-Ge optical phonon modes show a clear hardening below $T_{\rm CDW}$ due to spin-charge-lattice coupling but with no evidence for a phonon Kohn anomaly. By comparing our experimental results with density functional theory calculations in absolute units, we conclude that FeGe is a Hund's metal in the intermediate correlated regime where magnetism has contributions from both itinerant and localized electrons arising from spin polarized electronic bands near the Fermi level.

We use elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions and spin excitations in the two-dimensional (2D) zig-zag antiferromagnet FePSe$_3$. By determining the magnetic order parameter across the AF phase transition, we conclude that the AF phase transition in FePSe$_3$ is first-order in nature. In addition, our INS measurements reveal that the spin waves in the AF ordered state have a large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy gap, consistent with an Ising Hamiltonian, and possible biquadratic magnetic exchange interactions. On warming across $T_N$, we find that dispersive spin excitations associated with three-fold rotational symmetric AF fluctuations change into FM spin fluctuations above $T_N$. These results suggest that the first-order AF phase transition in FePSe$_3$ may arise from the competition between $C_3$ symmetric AF and $C_1$ symmetric FM spin fluctuations around $T_N$, in place of a conventional second-order AF phase transition.

A modern cold triple-axis spectrometer to study quantum condensed matter systems is planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the conceptual principles and design of a secondary spectrometer using a multiplexed, prismatic analyzer system relying on graphite crystals and inspired by the successful implementation of the Continuous Angle Multiple Energy Analysis (CAMEA) spectrometers at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This project is currently known as MANTA for Multi-analyzer Neutron Triple-Axis. We report Monte-Carlo ray-tracing simulations on a simple but realistic sample scattering kernel to further illustrate the prismatic analyzer concept's workings, calibration, and performance. Then, we introduce a new statistical analysis approach based on the prismatic analyzer concept to improve the number of final energies measured on the spectrometer. Two-dimensional kagome metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles offer a unique platform for studying strong electron correlations and band topology due to its geometrically frustrated lattice structure. The similar energy scales between spin, lattice, and electronic degrees of freedom in these systems give rise to competing quantum phases such as charge density wave (CDW), magnetic order, and superconductivity. For example, kagome metal FeGe first exhibits A-type collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at T_N ~ 400 K, then establishes a CDW phase coupled with AFM ordered moment below T_CDW ~ 100 K, and finally forms a $c$-axis double cone AFM structure around T_Canting ~ 60 K. Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate the presence of gapless incommensurate spin excitations associated with the double cone AFM structure at temperatures well above T_Canting and T_CDW that merge into gapped commensurate spin waves from the A-type AFM order. While commensurate spin waves follow the Bose population factor and can be well described by a local moment Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the incommensurate spin excitations first appear below T_N where AFM order is commensurate, start to deviate from the Bose population factor around T_CDW, and peaks at T_Canting, consistent with a critical scattering of a second order magnetic phase transition, as a function of decreasing temperature. By comparing these results with density functional theory calculations, we conclude that the incommensurate magnetic structure arises from the nested Fermi surfaces of itinerant electrons and the formation of a spin density wave order. The temperature dependence of the incommensurate spin excitations suggests a coupling between spin density wave and CDW order, likely due to flat electronic bands near the Fermi level around T_N and associated electron correlation effects., Comment: Submitted for publication in April 2023

We present dynamical models of the narrow line region (NLR) outflows in the nearby Seyfert galaxies Mrk 3, Mrk 78, NGC 1068, and NGC 4151 using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Apache Point Observatory. We employ long-slit spectroscopy to map the spatially-resolved outflow and rotational velocities of the ionized gas. We also perform surface brightness decompositions of host galaxy images to constrain the enclosed stellar mass distributions as functions of distance from the supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Assuming that the NLR gas is accelerated by AGN radiation pressure, and subsequently decelerated by the host galaxy and SMBH gravitational potentials, we derive outflow velocity profiles where the gas is launched in situ at multiple distances from the SMBH. We find a strong correlation between the turnover (from acceleration to deceleration) radii from our models, with the turnovers seen in the observed velocities and spatially-resolved mass outflow rates for the AGN with bolometric luminosities $>$ 10$^{44}$ erg sec$^{-1}$. This consistency indicates that radiation pressure is the dominant driving mechanism behind the NLR outflows in these moderate-luminosity AGN, with a force multiplier $\sim$500 yielding the best agreement between the modeled and observed turnover radii. However, in Meena2021 we found that this trend may not hold at lower luminosities, where our modeled turnover distance for NGC 4051 is much smaller than in the observed kinematics. Imitation learning allows social robots to learn new skills from human teachers without substantial manual programming, but it is difficult for robotic imitation learning systems to generalize demonstrated skills as well as human learners do. Contemporary neurocomputational approaches to imitation learning achieve limited generalization at the cost of data-intensive training, and often produce opaque models that are difficult to understand and debug. In this study, we explore the viability of developing purely-neural controllers for social robots that learn to imitate by reasoning about the underlying intentions of demonstrated behaviors. We present NeuroCERIL, a brain-inspired neurocognitive architecture that uses a novel hypothetico-deductive reasoning procedure to produce generalizable and human-readable explanations for demonstrated behavior. This approach combines bottom-up abductive inference with top-down predictive verification, and captures important aspects of human causal reasoning that are relevant to a broad range of cognitive domains. Our empirical results demonstrate that NeuroCERIL can learn various procedural skills in a simulated robotic imitation learning domain. We also show that its causal reasoning procedure is computationally efficient, and that its memory use is dominated by highly transient short-term memories, much like human working memory. We conclude that NeuroCERIL is a viable neural model of human-like imitation learning that can improve human-robot collaboration and contribute to investigations of the neurocomputational basis of human cognition.

Electron correlations often lead to emergent orders in quantum materials. Kagome lattice materials are emerging as an exciting platform for realizing quantum topology in the presence of electron correlations. This proposal stems from the key signatures of electronic structures associated with its lattice geometry: flat band induced by destructive interference of the electronic wavefunctions, topological Dirac crossing, and a pair of van Hove singularities (vHSs). A plethora of correlated electronic phases have been discovered amongst kagome lattice materials, including magnetism, charge density wave (CDW), nematicity, and superconductivity. These materials can be largely organized into two types: those that host magnetism and those that host CDW order. Recently, a CDW order has been discovered in the magnetic kagome FeGe, providing a new platform for understanding the interplay between CDW and magnetism. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe all three types of electronic signatures of the kagome lattice: flat bands, Dirac crossings, and vHSs. From both the observation of a temperature-dependent shift of the vHSs towards the Fermi level as well as guidance via first-principle calculations, we identify the presence of the vHSs near the Fermi level (EF) to be driven by the development of underlying magnetic exchange splitting. Furthermore, we show spectral evidence for the CDW order as gaps that open on the near-EF vHS bands, as well as evidence of electron-phonon coupling from a kink on the vHS band together with phonon hardening observed by inelastic neutron scattering. Our observation points to the magnetic interaction-driven band modification resulting in the formation of the CDW order, indicating an intertwined connection between the emergent magnetism and vHS charge order in this moderately-correlated kagome metal., Comment: submitted on April 22, 2022

Triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCe$X_2$ compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce$^{3+}$ ions, upon varying their anion character ($X_2$= O$_2$, S$_2$, SeS, Se$_2$, TeSe, Te$_2$). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO$_2$, that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO$_2$. Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and \textit{ab initio} calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the $J=5/2$ multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the $J=5/2$ manifold, we observe one extra, local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce$^{3+}$ sites., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) can launch outflows of ionized gas that may influence galaxy evolution, and quantifying their full impact requires spatially resolved measurements of the gas masses, velocities, and radial extents. We previously reported these quantities for the ionized narrow-line region (NLR) outflows in six low-redshift AGN, where the gas velocities and extents were determined from Hubble Space Telescope long-slit spectroscopy. However, calculating the gas masses required multi-component photoionization models to account for radial variations in the gas densities, which span $\sim$6 orders of magnitude. In order to simplify this method for larger samples with less spectral coverage, we compare these gas masses with those calculated from techniques in the literature. First, we use a recombination equation with three different estimates for the radial density profiles. These include constant densities, those derived from [S II], and power-law profiles based on constant values of the ionization parameter ($U$). Second, we use single-component photoionization models with power-law density profiles based on constant $U$, and allow $U$ to vary with radius based on the [O III]/H$\beta$ ratios. We find that assuming a constant density of $n_\mathrm{H} =$ 10$^2$ cm$^{-3}$ overestimates the gas masses for all six outflows, particularly at small radii where the outflow rates peak. The use of [S II] marginally matches the total gas masses, but also overestimates at small radii. Overall, single-component photoionization models where $U$ varies with radius are able to best match the gas mass and outflow rate profiles when there are insufficient emission lines to construct detailed models., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ on March 11, 2022. Fe3-xGeTe2 is a layered magnetic van der Waals material of interest for both fundamental and applied research. Despite the observation of intriguing physical properties, open questions exist even on the basic features related to magnetism: is it a simple ferromagnet or are there antiferromagnetic regimes and are the moments local or itinerant. Here, we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations coexist with the ferromagnetism through comprehensive elastic and inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements. Our realistic dynamical mean-field theory calculations reveal that the competing magnetic fluctuations are driven by an orbital selective Mott transition, where only the plane-perpendicular a1g orbital of the Fe(3d) manifold remains itinerant. Our results highlight the multi-orbital character in Fe3-xGeTe2 that supports a rare coexistence of local and itinerant physics within this material., Comment: 16 pages, 3 main figures

We investigate the magnetic excitations of elemental gadolinium (Gd) using inelastic neutron scattering, showing that Gd is a Dirac magnon material with nodal lines at $K$ and nodal planes at half integer $\ell$. We find an anisotropic intensity winding around the $K$-point Dirac magnon cone, which is interpreted to indicate Berry phase physics. Using linear spin wave theory calculations, we show the nodal lines have non-trivial Berry phases, and topological surface modes. We also discuss the origin of the nodal plane in terms of a screw-axis symmetry, and introduce a topological invariant characterizing its presence and effect on the scattering intensity. Together, these results indicate a highly nontrivial topology, which is generic to hexagonal close packed ferromagnets. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic exchange Hamiltonian of elemental Gadolinium. We use neutron scattering to measure the magnon spectrum over the entire Brillouin zone, and fit the excitations to a spin wave model to extract the first 26 nearest neighbor magnetic exchange interactions with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find these exchange interactions to follow RKKY behavior, oscillating from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic as a function of distance. Finally, we discuss the topological features and degeneracies in Gd, and HCP ferromagnets in general. We explore the properties of ionized gas in the nuclear and circumnuclear environment of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using spectroscopic and imaging observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Apache Point Observatory (APO)'s ARC 3.5m Telescope. We identify an unresolved moderate-density intermediate width component and a high-density broad component in the optical emission lines from the active nucleus, as well as spatially-resolved emission extending up to $\sim$1 kpc in the AGN ionized narrow-line region (NLR) and $\sim$8 kpc in the stellar ionized host galaxy. The HST narrow-band image reveals a distinct conical structure in [O III] emission towards the NE, and the ionized gas kinematics shows up to two blueshifted velocity components, indicating outflows along the edges of a cone. We introduce an improved model of biconical outflow, with our line of sight passing through the wall of the cone, which suggests that the large number of outflowing UV absorbers seen in NGC 4051 are NLR clouds in absorption. Using the de-projection factors from the biconical geometry, we measure true outflow velocities up to 680 km s$^{-1}$ at a distance of $\sim$350 pc, however, we do not find any rotational signature inside a projected distance $\leq$ 10'' ($\sim$800 pc) from the nucleus. We compare the gas kinematics with analytical models based on a radiation-gravity formalism, which show that most of the observed NLR outflows are launched within $\sim$0.5 pc of the nucleus and can travel up to $\sim$1 kpc from this low-luminosity AGN., Comment: 29 Pages, 16 Figures, 4 Tables. We present Tully-Fisher distances for 24 AGN host galaxies with black hole mass ($M_\textrm{{BH}}$) measurements from reverberation mapping, as well as the first calibration of the $V-$band Tully-Fisher relation. Combining our measurements of HI 21cm emission with $HST$ and ground-based optical and near-infrared images allows multiple distance measurements for 19 galaxies and single measurements for the remaining 5. Separation of the nucleus from its host galaxy via surface brightness decomposition yields galaxy-only luminosities, thus allowing measurements of the distance moduli free of contamination from the AGN. For 14 AGN hosts, these are the first reported distances independent of redshift, and hence independent of peculiar velocities. For the remaining galaxies, we show good agreement between our distances and those previously reported from surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) and Cepheids. We also determine the total galaxy mass enclosed within the estimated HI radius, which when compared to the baryonic content allows for constraints on the dark matter masses. We find a typical mass fraction of $M_{\textrm{DM}}$/$M_{\textrm{DYN}}$ = 62\%, and find significant correlations between $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ $-$ $M_{\textrm{DYN}}$ and $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ $-$ $M_{\textrm{DM}}$. Finally, we scale our galaxy radii based on estimated relationships between visible and halo radii and assume a flat rotation curve out to the halo radius to approximate $M_{\textrm{HALO}}$. Over the range of $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ and $M_{\textrm{HALO}}$ in this sample, we find good agreement with observationally-constrained relationships between $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ and $M_{\textrm{HALO}}$ and with hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 24 pages, 15 figures

Outflows of ionized gas driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) may significantly impact the evolution of their host galaxies. However, determining the energetics of these outflows is difficult with spatially unresolved observations that are subject to strong global selection effects. We present part of an ongoing study using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Apache Point Observatory (APO) spectroscopy and imaging to derive spatially-resolved mass outflow rates and energetics for narrow line region (NLR) outflows in nearby AGN that are based on multi-component photoionization models to account for spatial variations in the gas ionization, density, abundances, and dust content. This expanded analysis adds Mrk 3, Mrk 78, and NGC 1068, doubling the sample in Revalski (2019). We find that the outflows contain total ionized gas masses of $M \approx 10^{5.5} - 10^{7.5}$ $M_{\odot}$ and reach peak velocities of $v \approx 800 - 2000$ km s$^{-1}$. The outflows reach maximum mass outflow rates of $\dot M_{out} \approx 3 - 12$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and encompass total kinetic energies of $E \approx 10^{54} - 10^{56}$ erg. The outflows extend to radial distances of $r \approx 0.1 - 3$ kpc from the nucleus, with the gas masses, outflow energetics, and radial extents positively correlated with AGN luminosity. The outflow rates are consistent with in-situ ionization and acceleration where gas is radiatively driven at multiple radii. We present a computational method for empirically characterizing the training loss level-sets of deep neural networks. Our method numerically constructs a path in parameter space that is constrained to a set with a fixed near-zero training loss. By measuring regularization functions and test loss at different points within this path, we examine how different points in the parameter space with the same fixed training loss compare in terms of generalization ability. We also compare this method for finding regularized points with the more typical method, that uses objective functions which are weighted sums of training loss and regularization terms. We apply dimensionality reduction to the traversed paths in order to visualize the loss level sets in a well-regularized region of parameter space.
