12. Enhancing Anatomical Instruction: Impact of a Virtual Canine Anatomy Program on Student Outcomes

Abstract

Innovative reforms in medical education will require instructional tools to support these changes and to give students more flexibility in where and how they learn. At Colorado State University, the software program Virtual Canine Anatomy (VCA) was developed to assist student learning both inside and outside the anatomical laboratory. The program includes interactive anatomical photographs of dissected canine cadavers, dissection instructions with accompanying videos and diagrams, radiographs, and three-dimensional models. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional tools like VCA so that decisions on pedagogical delivery can be evidence-based. To measure the impact of VCA on student outcomes in a dissection laboratory, this study compared student attitudes, quiz scores, dissection quality and accuracy, and instructor reliance between students with and without access to VCA. Students with VCA needed less time with teaching assistants (P < 0.01), asked teaching assistants fewer questions (P = 0.04), felt that the dissection was easier (P = 0.02), and were in stronger agreement that they had access to adequate resources (P = 0.02). No differences were found in the dissection quality or accuracy, quiz scores, or attitudes regarding overall enjoyment of the activity between the two groups. This study shows that VCA increases student independence and can be used to enhance anatomical instruction.

Abstract

Digitalization has created a world awash with data from sources almost unimaginable 50 years ago. Using recent examples from climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, official statistics, and artificial intelligence, the address will illustrate the importance of understanding the data generating process and the data about the data. It will be argued that statisticians and other data professionals have an increasingly important role to play as advocates for well-defined and well documented data generation—particularly as the distinction between inputs and outputs becomes blurred. 19. Relationship between the relative timing of prosection and dissection experiences and laboratory examination performance in a gross anatomy course.

Abstract

Reduced hours of instruction are reported within the gross anatomy education literature. Anatomy instruction continues to be challenged with motivating and inspiring learners to value the contribution of gross anatomy knowledge to their career development alongside increased organizational demands for efficiency and effectiveness. To address these demands, this retrospective study sought to understand how the relative timing and amount of gross anatomy instruction were related to examination performance. Undergraduate and graduate students between 2018 and 2022 were assigned to three cohorts determined by enrollment in prosection‐based anatomy only (n = 334), concurrent enrollment in prosection‐ and dissection‐based anatomy in the same semester (n = 67), or consecutive enrollment in the courses one year apart (n = 43). Concurrent students had higher prosection‐based anatomy examination scores than prosection‐only and consecutive students. Consecutively, enrolled students outperformed concurrently enrolled students on the first two dissection examinations but showed no performance differences on the third and fourth dissection examinations. While the results on the timing and presentation of anatomical instruction were inconclusive, the results do support increased instructional time using both prosection and dissection modalities concurrently to improve performance on identification‐based gross anatomy examinations. Abstract

This is a record of a journey along Ireland’s border and a portrait of its landscape and its history. I follow the line closely, no matter where it brings me. Where I cannot walk I use a canoe. At night I camp out on the land. I visit architecture on the border, forts and dykes as well as defensive building of the Troubles. The ways in which we control land is a preoccupation of The Rule of the Land. I also speak to people who live on the frontier and attempt to discover what a border culture might entail. I want to get under the borderline symbol on the map and find out what is actually happening on the ground. The Rule of the Land charts the border in inventive ways, with my own maps and photographs as well as text. The Rule of the Land may be of interest to readers of creative non-fiction, psychogeography, nature writing, travel writing and Irish history and culture.

Abstract

This thesis addresses the role of subgroups and sub-populations in drug development and regulation and includes the critical appraisal of regulatory guidance. Chapter One introduces clinical trial methodology and describes the current regulatory environment. In Chapter Two, randomisation is reviewed in relation to unbiased estimation of treatment differences and the impact of data exclusion to form subsets is described. Simpson's paradox (SP) is considered in Chapter Three. Randomisation is shown to protect against SP, while a treatment by factor interaction is not required. Balance is redefined for the odds formulation leading to identical unconditional and conditional parameters. The chances of SP (and less extreme inconsistencies) occurring are quantified using simulation, with varying sample size. Chapter Four considers treatment by subgroup interactions. Suggestions regarding the magnitude of a clinically relevant interaction are presented while a simple Bayesian approach to evaluate interactions using margins for the interaction parameter is applied to published data. Chapter Five considers non-inferiority in relation to sub-populations and covariate adjustment for binary outcomes. It is shown that the Per Protocol population is not necessarily conservative and simulation is used to demonstrate the impact on the type I and II errors. Using simulations it is shown that an increase in the type I error occurs if an important covariate is excluded from the logistic model when testing for non-inferiority. Chapter Six is directed towards the sub-population of children. The impact of off-label treatment is discussed in relation to the ethics of placebo-controlled trials, together with the importance of randomisation in evaluating long-term safety. In Chapter Seven, a therapeutic area is selected to ilJustrate the challenges raised during the previous chapters and wording changes to current regulatory guidelines are proposed. The thesis closes with personal thoughts regarding the future potential for individualised treatment.

Abstract

Magnetic excitations in an array of (VO)2P2O7 single crystals have been measured using inelastic neutron scattering. Until now, (VO)2P2O7 has been thought of as a two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder with chains running in the a-direction. The present results show unequivocally that (VO)2P2O7 is best described as an alternating spin-chain directed along the crystallographic b-direction. In addition to the expected magnon with magnetic zone-center energy gap DE = 3.1$ meV, a second excitation is observed at an energy just below 2DE. The higher mode may be a triplet two-magnon bound state.
