This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. Progress in understanding quantum systems has been driven by the exploration of the geometry, topology, and dimensionality of ultracold atomic systems. The NASA Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station has enabled the study of ultracold atomic bubbles, a terrestrially-inaccessible topology. Proof-of-principle bubble experiments have been performed on CAL with an rf-dressing technique; an alternate technique (dual-species interaction-driven bubbles) has also been proposed. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with ESA and national space and research funding agencies., Comment: Summary of the Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space and corresponding Road-map: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1064855/

We develop an exact framework to describe the non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with an environment modeled by a generalized spectral density function. The approach relies on mapping the initial system onto an auxiliary configuration, comprising the original open system coupled to a small number of discrete modes, which in turn are each coupled to an independent Markovian reservoir. Based on the connection between the discrete modes and the poles of the spectral density function, we show how expanding the system using the discrete modes allows for the full inclusion non-Markovian effects within an enlarged open system whose dynamics is governed by an exact Lindblad master equation. Initially we apply this result to obtain a generalization of the pseudomode method [B. M. Garraway, Phys. Rev. A 55, 2290 (1997)] in cases where the spectral density function has a Lorentzian structure. For many other types of spectral density function, we extend our proof to show that an open system dynamics may be modeled physically using discrete modes which admit a non-Hermitian coupling to the system, and for such cases determine the equivalent master equation to no longer be of Lindblad form. For applications involving two discrete modes, we demonstrate how to convert between pathological and Lindblad forms of the master equation using the techniques of the pseudomode method., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, accepted version

A nonlinear analytical model for the pressure dynamics in a vacuum chamber, pumped with a sputter ion pump (SIP), is proposed, discussed and experimentally evaluated. The model describes the physics of the pumping mechanism of SIPs in the context of a cold-atom experiment. By using this model, we fit pump-down curves of our vacuum system to extract the relevant physical parameters characterizing its pressure dynamics. The aim of this investigation is the optimization of cold-atom experiments in terms of reducing the dead time for quantum sensing using atom interferometry. We develop a calibration method to improve the precision in pressure measurements via the ion current in SIPs. Our method is based on a careful analysis of the gas conductance and pumping in order to reliably link the pressure readings at the SIP with the actual pressure in the vacuum (science) chamber. Our results are in agreement with the existence of essentially two pumping regimes determined by the pressure level in the system. In particular, we find our results in agreement with the well-known fact that for a given applied voltage, at low pressures, the discharge current efficiently sputters pumping material from the pump's electrodes. This process sets the leading pumping mechanism in this limit. At high pressures, the discharge current drops and the pumping is mainly performed by the already sputtered material.

Quantum Darwinism extends the traditional formalism of decoherence to explain the emergence of classicality in a quantum universe. A classical description emerges when the environment tends to redundantly acquire information about the pointer states of an open system. In light of recent interest, we apply the theoretical tools of the framework to a qubit coupled with many bosonic sub-environments. We examine the degree to which the same classical information is encoded across collections of: (i) complete sub-environments, and (ii) residual "pseudomode" components of each sub-environment, the conception of which provides a dynamic representation of the reservoir memory. Overall, significant redundancy of information is found as a typical result of the decoherence process. However, by examining its decomposition in terms of classical and quantum correlations, we discover classical information to be non-redundant in both cases (i) and (ii). Moreover, with the full collection of pseudomodes, certain dynamical regimes realize opposite effects, where either the total classical or quantum correlations predominantly decay over time. Finally, when the dynamics are non-Markovian, we find that redundant information is suppressed in line with information back-flow to the qubit. By quantifying redundancy, we concretely show it to act as a witness to non-Markovianity in the same way as the trace distance does for nondivisible dynamical maps., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Sir Peter Knight is a pioneer in quantum optics which has now grown to an important branch of modern physics to study the foundations and applications of quantum physics. He is leading an effort to develop new technologies from quantum mechanics. In this collection of essays, we recall the time we were working with him as a postdoc or a PhD student and look at how the time with him has influenced our research.

In this chapter we review the field of radio-frequency dressed atom trapping. We emphasise the role of adiabatic potentials and give simple, but generic models of electromagnetic fields that currently produce traps for atoms at microkelvin temperatures and below. The paper aims to be didactic and starts with general descriptions of the essential ingredients of adiabaticity and magnetic resonance. As examples of adiabatic potentials we pay attention to radio-frequency dressing in both the quadrupole trap and the Ioffe-Pritchard trap. We include a description of the effect of different choices of radio-frequency polarisation and orientations or alignment. We describe how the adiabatic potentials, formed from radio-frequency fields, can themselves be probed and manipulated with additional radio-frequency fields including multi-photon-effects. We include a description of time-averaged adiabatic potentials. Practical issues for the construction of radio-frequency adiabatic potentials are addressed including noise, harmonics, and beyond rotating wave approximation effects., Comment: Review Article, 37 pages, 18 figures

Non-adiabatic decay rates for a radio-frequency dressed magnetic trap are calculated using Fermi's Golden Rule: that is, we examine the probability for a single atom to make transitions out of the dressed trap and into a continuum in the adiabatic limit, where perturbation theory can be applied. This approach can be compared to the semi-classical Landau-Zener theory of a resonant dressed atom trap, and it is found that, when carefully implemented, the Landau-Zener theory overestimates the rate of non-adiabatic spin flip transitions in the adiabatic limit. This indicates that care is needed when determining requirements on trap Rabi frequency and magnetic field gradient in practical atom traps.

In a previous paper tests for entanglement for two mode systems involving identical massive bosons were obtained. In the present paper we consider sufficiency tests for EPR steering in such systems. We find that spin squeezing in any spin component, a Bloch vector test, the Hillery-Zubairy planar spin variance test and squeezing in two mode quadratures all show that the quantum state is EPR steerable. We also find a generalisation of the Hillery-Zubairy planar spin variance test for EPR steering. The relation to previous correlation tests is discussed. This paper is based on a detailed classification of quantum states for bipartite systems. States for bipartite composite systems are categorised in quantum theory as either separable or entangled, but the states can also be divided differently into Bell local or Bell non-local states in terms of local hidden variable theory (LHVT). For the Bell local states there are three cases depending on whether both, one of or neither of the LHVT probabilities for each sub-system are also given by a quantum probability involving sub-system density operators. Cases where one or both are given by a quantum probability are known as local hidden states (LHS) and such states are non-steerable. The steerable states are the Bell local states where there is no LHS, or the Bell non-local states. These two accompanying papers treat two mode entanglement for systems of identical massive bosons and the relationship to spin squeezing and other quantum correlation effects. Entanglement is a key quantum feature of composite systems where the probabilities for joint measurements on the composite sub-systems are no longer determined from measurement probabilities on the separate sub-systems. We focus on the meaning of entanglement, the quantum paradoxes associated with entangled states, and important tests that allow an experimentalist to determine whether a quantum state - in particular, one for massive bosons is entangled. Our tests for entanglement fully utilise the symmetrisation principle and super-selection rules for bosonic massive particles. These papers provides detailed arguments necessary for the conclusions of a recent paper which presented results for rigorously demonstrating the entanglement of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). In the first paper (I), we discuss the meaning of entanglement for systems of identical particles. For such systems, the relevant quantum density operators must satisfy the symmetrisation principle and global and local super-selection rules prohibiting states in which there are coherences between differing particle numbers. We fully justify these requirements. In the second quantisation approach, both the system and sub-systems are modes (or sets of modes) rather than particles, particles being associated with different mode occupancies. In the accompanying review paper (II), we consider spin squeezing and other tests for entanglement for two-mode bosonic systems. Starting from paper (I) we determine which tests are useful for detecting entanglement in massive bosonic (BEC), as opposed to photonic, systems. Based on a multimode multilevel Jaynes-Cummings model and multiphoton resonance theory, a set of universal two- and three-qubit gates, namely the iSWAP and the Fredkin gates, has been realized where dual-rail qubits are encoded in cavities. In this way the information has been stored in cavities and the off-resonant atomic levels have been eliminated by the semi-classical theory of an effective two-level Hamiltonian. A further semi-classical model, namely the spin-$J$ model, has been introduced so that a complete population inversion for levels of interest has been achieved and periodic multilevel multiphoton models have been performed. The combination of the two semi-classical models has been employed to address two-level, three-level, four-level, and even five-level configurations. The impact of decoherence processes on the fidelity of the iSWAP and the Fredkin gates has been studied.

We develop a theory for the interaction of multi-level atoms with multi-mode cavities yielding cavity-enhanced multi-photon resonances. The locations of the resonances are predicted from the use of effective two- and three-level Hamiltonians. As an application we show that quantum gates can be realised when photonic qubits are encoded on the cavity modes in arrangements where ancilla atoms transit the cavity. The fidelity of operations is increased by conditional measurements on the atom and by the use of a selected, dual-rail, Hilbert space. A universal set of gates is proposed, including the Fredkin gate and iSWAP operation; the system seems promising for scalability.

We propose a flexible and robust scheme to create closed quasi-one dimensional guides for ultra-cold atoms through the dressing of hyperfine sub-levels of the atomic ground state. The dressing field is spatially modulated by inductive effects over a micro-engineered conducting loop, freeing the trapping region from leading wires in its proximity. We show that arrays of connected ring traps can also be created by carefully designing the shape of the conducting loop. We report on characteristics of the trap and mechanisms that limit the range of parameters available for experimental implementation, including non-adiabatic losses and heat dissipation by induced currents. We present two novel dressed inductive ring trap geometries, ideal for atom interferometry or studies of superfluidity and well-suited to utilisation in atom chip architectures. The design permits ring radii currently only accessible via near-diffraction-limited optical traps, whilst retaining the ultra-smooth magnetic potential afforded by inductive traps. One geometry offers simple parallel implementation of multiple rings, whereas the other geometry permits axial beam-splitting of the torus suitable for whole-ring atom interferometry., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, linked movies

For any quantum state representing a physical system of identical particles, the density operator must satisfy the symmetrisation principle (SP) and for massive particles also conform to super-selection rules (SSR) that prohibit coherences between differing total particle numbers. Here we consider bi-partitite states for systems of massive bosons, where both the system and subsystems are modes (or sets of modes), particles being associated with differing mode occupancies. To define non-entangled or separable states the subsystem density operators are also required to satisfy the SP and conform to SSR, in contrast to some other approaches. Whilst in the presence of these additional constraints some of the known entanglement criteria are still valid, we present a detailed treatment to establish the validity of known criteria and derive new ones., Comment: V2. 12 pages, 0 figures. The concept of entangled quantum states is considered in the context of systems of identical particles, based on the requirement that in order to represent physical states both for the overall system and the sub-systems which may be entangled, the density operators must satisfy the symmetrisation principle and global and local super-selection rules that prohibit states in which there are coherences between differing particle numbers. These requirements and their justification are fully discussed. In the second quantisation approach used, both the system and the sub-systems are modes (or sets of modes) rather than particles, particles being associated with different occupancies of the modes. The definition of entangled states is based on first defining the non-entangled states - after specifying which modes constitute the sub-systems. This paper mainly focuses on two mode entanglement for massive bosons. Several inequalities involving variances and mean values of operators involving mode annihilation, creation operators have been proposed as tests for two mode entangled states, including the inequalities that define spin squeezing. Spin squeezing criteria in two mode systems are examined, and spin squeezing is best considered for principle spin operator components where the covariance matrix is diagonal. It is shown that the presence of spin squeezing in at least one of the spin components requires entanglement of the relevant pair of modes. Several of the other proposed tests for entanglement, including ones based on the sum of the variances for two spin components are considered. All of the tests are still valid when the present concept of entanglement based on the symmetrisation and super-selection rule criteria is applied, but further tests have been obtained here. This paper shows that phase space methods using a positive P type distribution function involving both c-number variables (for the cavity mode) and Grassmann variables (for the two level atom) can be used to treat the Jaynes-Cummings model. Although it is a Grassmann function, the distribution function is equivalent to six c-number functions of the two bosonic variables. Experimental quantities are given as bosonic phase space integrals involving the six functions. A Fokker-Planck equation involving both left and right Grassmann differentiation can be obtained for the distribution function, and is equivalent to six coupled equations for the six c-number functions. The approach used involves choosing the canonical form of the (non-unique) positive P distribution function, where the correspondence rules for bosonic operators are non-standard and hence the Fokker-Planck equation is also unusual. Initial conditions, such as for initially uncorrelated states, are used to determine the initial distribution function. Transformations to new bosonic variables rotating at the cavity frequency enables the six coupled equations for the new c-number functions (also equivalent to the canonical Grassmann distribution function) to be solved analytically, based on an ansatz from a 1980 paper by Stenholm. It is then shown that the distribution function is the same as that determined from the well-known solution based on coupled equations for state vector amplitudes of atomic and n-photon product states. Atoms can be trapped using a combination of static and rotating magnetic fields. A theoretical analysis is performed of a rotating polarisation axis which is used to eliminate regions of zero coupling. A similar result is found using linear polarisation, but in the case of circular polarisation no orientational dependence in the coupling remains when on resonance., Comment: to appear in Physica Scripta, CEWQO2009 proceedings

We study the spectroscopy of atoms dressed by a resonant radiofrequency (RF) field inside an inhomogeneous magnetic field and confined in the resulting adiabatic potential. The spectroscopic probe is a second, weak, RF field. The observed line shape is related to the temperature of the trapped cloud. We demonstrate evaporative cooling of the RF-dressed atoms by sweeping the frequency of the second RF field around the Rabi frequency of the dressing field., Comment: 7 figures, 8 pages; to appear in J. According to Bell's theorem, local realism is incompatible with quantum theory. However, it depends on an implied assumption about quantum measurement. We suggest that the assumption might be removed by a detailed quantum analysis of the interaction between the measured system and measuring apparatus using Born's statistical interpretation. But it is conceivable that detailed analysis of all possible Bell experiments would allow the compatibility of quantum theory and local realism. A theoretical investigation for implementing a scheme of forced evaporative cooling in radio-frequency (rf) adiabatic potentials is presented. Supposing the atoms to be trapped by a rf field RF1, the cooling procedure is facilitated using a second rf source RF2. This second rf field produces a controlled coupling between the spin states dressed by RF1. The evaporation is then possible in a pulsed or continuous mode. In the pulsed case, atoms with a given energy are transferred into untrapped dressed states by abruptly switching off the interaction. In the continuous case, it is possible for energetic atoms to adiabatically follow the doubly-dressed states and escape out of the trap. Our results also show that when the frequencies of the fields RF1 and RF2 are separated by at least the Rabi frequency associated with RF1, additional evaporation zones appear which can make this process more efficient., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We propose a new kind of toroidal trap, designed for ultracold atoms. It relies on a combination of a magnetic trap for rf-dressed atoms, which creates a bubble-like trap, and a standing wave of light. This new trap is well suited for investigating questions of low dimensionality in a ring potential. We study the trap characteristics for a set of experimentally accessible parameters. A loading procedure from a conventional magnetic trap is also proposed. The flexible nature of this new ring trap, including an adjustable radius and adjustable transverse oscillation frequencies, will allow the study of superfluidity in variable geometries and dimensionalities., Comment: 4 figures, 10 pages ; the order of the sections has been changed ; to appear in Phys.
