Abstract

Genomic data allow an in-depth and renewed study of local adaptation. The red coral (Corallium rubrum, Cnidaria) is a highly genetically structured species and a promising model for the study of adaptive processes along an environmental gradient. Here, we used RAD-Sequencing in order to study the vertical genetic structure of this species and to search for signals of local adaptation to depth and thermal regime in the red coral. Previous studies have shown different thermotolerance levels according to depth in this species which could correspond to genetic or environmental differences. We designed a sampling scheme with six pairs of shallow vs deep populations distributed in three geographical regions as replicates. Our results showed significant differentiation among locations and among sites separated by around 20 m depth. The tests of association between genetics and environment allowed the identification of candidate loci under selection but with a potentially high rate of false positive. We discuss the methodological obstacles and biases encountered for the detection of selected loci in such a strongly genetically structured species. On this basis, we also discuss the significance of the candidate loci for local adaptation detected in each geographical region and the evolution of red coral populations along environmental gradients.

Abstract

Global change is striking harder and faster in the Mediterranean Sea than elsewhere, where high levels of human pressure and proneness to climate change interact in modifying the structure and disrupting regulative mechanisms of marine ecosystems. Rocky reefs are particularly exposed to such environmental changes with ongoing trends of degradation being impressive. Due to the variety of habitat types and associated marine biodiversity, rocky reefs are critical for the functioning of marine ecosystems, and their decline could profoundly affect the provision of essential goods and services which human populations in coastal areas rely upon. Here, we provide an up-to-date overview of the status of rocky reefs, trends in human-driven changes undermining their integrity, and current and upcoming management and conservation strategies, attempting a projection on what could be the future of this essential component of Mediterranean marine ecosystems.

Abstract

The Mediterranean Basin is experiencing major changes in environmental conditions, which can introduce new challenges to the resilience of its natural and human systems. This situation is combined with rapid and spatially diverse socio-economic development in the region, mainly in terms of demographic trends and settlement patterns, thus leading to higher exposure to environmental hazards. Abstract

Climate change and biological invasions are rapidly reshuffling species distribution, restructuring the biological communities of many ecosystems worldwide. Tracking these transformations in the marine environment is crucial, but our understanding of climate change effects and invasive species dynamics is often hampered by the practical challenge of surveying large geographical areas. Here, we focus on the Mediterranean Sea, a hot spot for climate change and biological invasions to investi- gate recent spatiotemporal changes in fish abundances and distribution. To this end, we accessed the local ecological knowledge (LEK) of small-scale and recreational fish- ers, reconstructing the dynamics of fish perceived as "new" or increasing in different fishing areas. Over 500 fishers across 95 locations and nine different countries were interviewed, and semiquantitative information on yearly changes in species abun- dance was collected. Overall, 75 species were mentioned by the respondents, mostly warm-adapted species of both native and exotic origin. Respondents belonging to the same biogeographic sectors described coherent spatial and temporal patterns, and gradients along latitudinal and longitudinal axes were revealed. This information pro- vides a more complete understanding of the shifting distribution of Mediterranean fishes and it also demonstrates that adequately structured LEK methodology might be applied successfully beyond the local scale, across national borders and jurisdic- tions. Acknowledging this potential through macroregional coordination could pave the way for future large-scale aggregations of individual observations, increasing our potential for integrated monitoring and conservation planning at the regional or even global level. These changes are usually greater for marine environments, because of their high environmental connectivity (Burrows et al., 2011) and because of the pivotal role of water temperatures, which strongly influence growth, survival, and reproduction in marine animals (Crozier & Hutchings, 2014; Reusch, 2014). In fact, even apparently modest changes in water temperature might trigger a rapid cascade of multiple pressures over marine organisms. Some species, unable to cope with these environmental alterations, or benefit from them, may change their abundances accordingly. However, mobile marine organisms also have another option: they can move to new areas where they were formerly absent (Cheung et al., 2009; Fogarty, Burrows, Pecl, Robinson, & Poloczanska, 2017). These two dynamics are not mutually exclusive, as they can be considered as different be- havioral and demographic responses that might coexist in the same species or population. Specifically, in the northern hemisphere, seawater warming has been associated with both the northward expansion of species and their increasing abundances (Fossheim et al., 2015; Perry, Low, Ellis, & Reynolds, 2005; Pörtner & Knust, 2007; Sabatés, Paloma, Lloret, & Raya, 2006). Yet, many studies provided evidence for the causal relationship between temperature, species distribution, and abun- dance (Cheung, Watson, & Pauly, 2013; Pinsky, Worm, Fogarty, Sarmiento, & Levin, 2013; Poloczanska et al., 2013) as well as their interplay with other global drivers, such as biological invasions, ma- rine overexploitation, and pollution (Stergiou, 2002; Walther et al., 2009). These changes, which are taking place across many differ- ent taxa and through different regions of the globe, have significant implications for biodiversity, ecosystems, and society (McGeoch & Latombe, 2016) and are considered to be particularly apparent in the Mediterranean, a semi-enclosed sea, which is warming faster than any other marine region in the world (Schroeder, Chiggiato, Bryden, Borghini, & Ben Ismail, 2016; Vargas-Yáñez et al., 2008). In addition, maritime traffic, mariculture, aquarium trade and above all, entries through the Suez Canal (Edelist, Rilov, Golani, Carlton, & Spanier, 2013; Parravicini, Azzurro, Kulbicki, & Belmaker, 2015) contribute to the introduction of a large number of nonindigenous species (hereafter referred as NIS) to this basin (Galil, Marchini, Occhipinti- Ambrogi, & Ojaveer, 2017; Golani et al., 2018; Zenetos et al., 2017), reshaping the structure of biological communities (Albouy et al., 2013, 2015, 2014; Katsanevakis et al., 2017) and impacting biodi- versity and fishery resources (Edelist et al., 2013). Despite the magnitude of these changes and their relevance for conservation and adaptation policy (Givan, Parravicini, Kulbicki, & Belmaker, 2017; Marras et al., 2015), observational studies are often fragmented in space (Elmendorf et al., 2015) and methodologically heterogeneous (Coll et al., 2010). This also applies to the northward expansions of warmwater species, a phenomenon that has been mostly described in the northwestern sectors of the Mediterranean basin, probably due to the uneven distribution of research ef- forts (Boero et al., 2008; Lejeusne, Chevaldonné, Pergent-Martini, Boudouresque, & Pérez, 2010; Marbà, Jordà, Agustí, Girard, & Duarte, 2015; Sabatés, Martín, & Raya, 2012). This fragmentation, together with the lack of coherent depictions of change, hampers the availability of reliable information to stakeholders and decision-mak- ers (Grafton, 2010; Pauly & Zeller, 2016). Indeed, in light of profound impacts that have already affected both people and the ecosystems they depend on, many national and transnational authorities and agencies are engaged in efforts to build adaptive capacity, seeking reliable information to enable people to anticipate and appropriately respond to the ongoing change (Coulthard, 2012). This explains the growing need of integrated monitoring and assessment systems to capture the ongoing transformations of marine ecosystems (includ- ing the effects of a changing climate) and to bring them into the pol- icy agendas (Creighton, Hobday, Lockwood, & Pecl, 2016). Certainly, our observational potential grew steadily during the last few years and increasing efforts are devoted to conceive global observation systems for up-to-date information on the state of biodiversity and the threats it faces (Tittensor et al., 2014). To achieve this, the use of standardized and cost-effective procedures is needed to underpin a large-scale observation strategy that can accommodate countries across a range of baseline knowledge levels and capabilities (Bélisle, Asselin, LeBlanc, & Gauthier, 2018; Latombe et al., 2017). These are key principles for collecting and integrating information from stake- holders across national boundaries. In this, fishers are a particularly interesting group of stakeholders, as they spend a considerable proportion of their lives in close contact with the marine environ- ment and they become familiar with local species. Therefore, their personal experience gained through individuals' observations over adapt to the ongoing biotic transformations driven by climate change and biological invaders.

Abstract

Gorgonians play an important structural and functional role promoting high diversity and biomass of associated fauna. Up to now, studies on gorgonian ecology in the Mediterranean Sea have been focused mainly on the SCUBA diving depth range. Although increased availability of remotely operated vehicles allowed access to the deeper areas, gorgonian assemblages located on continental shelf and slopes are still barely known. Gorgonian assemblages on continental shelves are extremely vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, especially bottom trawling and longline fishing. To implement effective management and conservation policies it is crucial to understand patterns of genetic structure among populations since connectivity enhances the resilience of populations. Paramuricea macrospina is a key structuring gorgonian in the Menorca Channel's (Balearic Archipelago) outer continental shelf where it covers vast extensions, reaching very high densities. Combining two mitochondrial makers and 10 microsatellites, this study gives the first insight into the genetic diversity and population structure of P. macrospina between 60 and 100 m depth in the Menorca Channel and at a horizontal spatial scale of about 60 Km. Overall, we demonstrate a low genetic diversity and a lack of genetic structure among populations, which may be explained by the geomorphology and hydrodynamic features of the Menorca Channel (e.g. internal waves, high currents). Our study suggests some connectivity among P. macrospina populations in accordance with the high recruitment rates observed. This connectivity may increase the resilience and foster the recovery of impacted populations since the study area will become a Marine Protected Area of the Natura 2000 network in the near future. Nevertheless, complementary studies based on a larger sample size should be conducted to complement our results. 26. Accounting for Life-History Strategies and Timescales in Marine Restoration

Abstract

Understanding the drivers of restoration success is a central issue for marine conservation. Here, we explore the role of life-history strategies of sessile marine species in shaping restoration outcomes and their associated timescales. A transplantation experiment for the extremely slow-growing and threatened octocoral Corallium rubrum was highly successful over a relatively short term due to high survival and reproductive potential of the transplanted colonies. However, demographic projections predict that from 30 to 40 years may be required for fully functional C. rubrum populations to develop. More broadly, a comprehensive meta-analysis revealed a negative correlation between survival after transplanting and growth rates among sessile species. As a result, simulated dynamics for a range of marine sessile invertebrates predict that longer recovery times are positively associated with survival rates. These results demonstrate a tradeoff between initial transplantation efforts and the speed of recovery. Transplantation of slow-growing species will tend to require lower initial effort due to higher survival after transplanting, but the period required to fully recover habitat complexity will tend to be far longer. This study highlights the important role of life history as a driver of marine restoration outcomes and shows how demographic knowledge and modeling tools can help managers to anticipate the dynamics and timescales of restored populations. Abstract

Coralligenous assemblages are hard bottoms of biogenic origin that are mainly produced by the accumulation of calcareous encrusting algae growing at low irradiance levels. Coralligenous harbour approximately 10% of marine Mediterranean species, most of them are long-lived algae and sessile invertebrates, which exhibit low dynamics and belong to various taxonomic groups such as sponges, corals, bryozoans and tunicates. This habitat is extended around all the Mediterranean coasts with a bathymetrical distribution ranging from 20 to 120 m depth depending on the local environmental variables, mainly light conditions. Coralligenous is affected by several pressures such as nutrient enrichment, invasive species, increase of sedimentation, mechanical impacts, mainly from fishing activities, as well as climate change. In WP3 restoration actions on coralligenous are focused on different habitat forming species including three main taxonomic groups Cnidaria/Anthozoa (Paramuricea clavata, Corallium rubrum and Eunicella spp.), Porifera/Demospongiae (Aplysina spp., Spongia spp., Petrosia ficiformis) and Bryozoa (Pentapora fascialis ; Myriapora truncata). We conducted a literature review to summarize the information available for the selected species focusing on six main topics relevant for restoration activities: i) Reproduction – Recruitment - Population dynamics, ii) Impacts and Mortality, iii) Functional role - Biodiversity, iv) Trophic interactions, v) Population genetics and vi ) Previous restoration activities. The compiled information provided key reference data to design restoration settings and to define robust indicators to monitor restoration actions as well as to evaluate expected timescales to fulfill the restoration of the habitat. Considering the life-history traits, population dynamics and genetics of the selected species the implementation of restoration action should be mainly based on transplants of small medium individuals collected from donor specimens. The spatial arrangements of transplants may include relatively small patches (0.2-1 m in diameter) separated by distances similar to the sizes of the transplant patches. The density within the transplant patches may be moderate-high in order to fit natural densities while enhancing the reproductive success and recruitment rates. Finally, bearing in mind the tradeoff between initial transplantation efforts and the speed of recovery. Transplantation efforts will require lower initial effort due to higher survival after transplanting, but the period required to fully recover habitat complexity will tend to be far longer, i.e. decades. Survival and growth of transplants and recruitment would be the most suitable indicators of the success of the restoration actions.

In order to assess the impact of the expected warming, we developed a strategy for the definition of warming scenarios in coastal habitats and their potential sub-lethal to lethal impacts on key benthic species. This was achieved by combining numerical simulations under IPCC-A2 scenario with field observations and thermo-tolerance experiments. First, a model validation was conducted for the period 2001-2008 in contrasted coastal areas. Then, scenarios forecast run temperature outputs were analyzed in order to explore the expected changes in the stratification by the end of the 21st century. These simulations were used together with species spatial distribution and thermo-tolerance functions to explore the potential risk of temperature induced mortality for the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata, considered a key-species in coastal Mediterranean ecosystems, by the end of the century
