Abstract We describe a method to extract an effective Lagrangian description for open bosonic strings, at zero transcendentality. The method relies on a particular formulation of its scattering amplitudes derived from color-kinematics duality. More precisely, starting from a (DF)2 + YM quantum field theory, we integrate out all the massive degrees of freedom to generate an expansion in the inverse string tension α′. We explicitly compute the Lagrangian terms through O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (α′4), and target the sector of operators proportional to F 4 to all orders in α′.

In recent years, laser scanning and other survey techniques have become popular for documenting and preserving architectural and structural heritage, including masonry bridges. These bridges require careful monitoring to ensure proper structural integrity analyses. However, analysing large datasets of complex point clouds can be challenging and time consuming. This research introduces an automated method to quickly assess the geometric characteristics of vault of bridges by means of a simple algorithm purposely developed for this application. The developed methodology was implemented in MATLAB. The main geometric features, such as length, arrow, and span, are extracted, and conditional algorithms classify the vault types based on specific thresholds. The methodology is tested on surveyed masonry bridges coming from a case study: the historical Circumetnea railway bridges in Sicily, Italy. A digital survey campaign was conducted using various survey techniques such as laser scanning and photogrammetry to obtain the vault point clouds. This research represents a step forward from previous methodologies by efficiently segmenting and analysing vaults from point clouds, enabling accurate classification and geometric analysis.

BackgroundImproving prognosis of BC patients has drawn the attention of health care professionals on disease related long-term side effects and on the multiple treatments BC patients must undergo. Despite advances in procedures, surgery still has multiple detrimental effects, including pain, edema, and limited mobility. For this reason, fostering adapted physical activity (APA) and healthy lifestyle (including a balanced diet and weight management) should become an everyday purpose of healthcare professionals. Fencing may be a well-suited activity to counteract fatigue, pain, and limited arm mobility.Method and analysisThe FENICE study is a mono-center, randomized clinical trial targeting women with BC stages I-III within four weeks from BC surgery. Participants in the control arm will receive the usual recommendations based on the good clinical practice guidelines. In the study arm, participants will be treated with the usual clinical and therapeutic recommendations together with APA and correct lifestyle suggestions.ObjectiveThe primary objective of the study is to compare whether implementation of APA and healthy lifestyle in BC patient after surgery will result in an overall improvement of physical and mental status.ConclusionFencing and its early application in postoperative period may represent a feasible strategy to be implemented in the rehabilitation journey of BC patients.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol FENICE has been approved by an Italian Ethics Committee on May 2023 (R.S 100.23 5th May 2023).

Key Clinical Message Stenotrophomonas maltophilia can cause rare odontogenic brain abscesses in immunocompetent patients, highlighting the importance of considering uncommon pathogens in central nervous system infections. With only three reported cases of cerebral abscesses and one pituitary abscess caused by this microorganism, tailored diagnostic methods and individualized treatment regimens are crucial for accurate management. Abstract Brain abscesses present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections being exceptionally rare in the central nervous system. We present a case of odontogenic brain abscesses caused by S. maltophilia in an immunocompetent patient, highlighting the rarity and complexity of such infections. A 66‐year‐old male presented with spatial–temporal disorientation and left‐sided weakness. Radiological investigations revealed an expansive lesion in the right posterior frontal region. A craniotomy and drainage were performed, identifying S. maltophilia in the purulent material. The patient responded well to tailored antibiotic therapy. S. maltophilia‐related central nervous system infections are infrequent, emphasizing the need for a heightened clinical suspicion in atypical cases. This case contributes to the literature, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for successful diagnosis and management.

Nel 1975 Rosario La Duca pubblica Cartografia generale della città di Palermo e antiche carte della Sicilia contenente 40 tavole e circa 100 schede. Tra le tavole si ritrova la Pianta geometrica secondo lo stato presente della città di Palermo capitale del Regno di Sicilia col suo porto, sobborghi, molo e campagna, disegnata nel 1822 da F.G.C.B. De Behrend. Il contributo presenta, dopo una breve nota sul modello, una recente esperienza didattica relativa al rilievo e alla rappresentazione digitale, nella quale si è deciso di studiare e indagare la cartografia del De Behrend secondo un iter che, a partire dal ridisegno di una carta storica, giunga alla costruzione di un modello fisico della struttura della città ottocentesca, in una dimensione ottico/tattile. Il modello è da intendersi nella sua doppia valenza di esito e di incipit per altri studi; se da un lato restituisce un’immagine della città nella sua interezza, risultato di stratificazioni progressive, dall’altro offre la possibilità di indagare gli aspetti morfologici del tessuto urbano per innescare processi classificatori che non tralasciano mai il contributo della Storia. La costruzione del modello fisico consente il passaggio dall’astrazione della rappresentazione bidimensionale del documento iconografico alla concretizzazione materica della struttura edilizia della città storica. Il coinvolgimento sensoriale come amplificatore della conoscenza trova nel plastico la sua dimensione concreta.

This study, starting from the representations of a number of projects kept in Palermo in public and private archives, seeks to highlight their role not only in the knowledge of little-known architecture, but above all their value as custodians of memory and bearers of knowledge. “The architecture in the drawer”, that which remains on paper and not debased by compromises, not only takes on a “material” value but above all an ethical value because making visible the thought and operative practice of an architectural scholar is a moral act.Analytical and critical redesign, in this sense, contributes with its natural slowness, which is synonymous with reflection, to nourishing knowledge of the project, of making architecture, of compositional and figurative processes and, last but not least, of the constituent principles of an architectural thought.Through the analysis of a number of drawings preserved in two archives containing projects by Salvatore Caronia Roberti and Salvatore Cardella, the aim is to show part of the points of a timeline, in this case coinciding, describing themes and modes of architecture making in Palermo, with the awareness that many significant passages are left out.Thus a drawing of a timeline, open and welcoming, which however identifies two substantial points in its development; two graphical stages that may constitute further reflections that assist architectural historiography and above all the knowledge of what has often been relegated to an unknown fate.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.31.2023.9

The architecture of the 20th century has been largely affected by changes in the field of technology. In particular, the evolution of digital representation has led to new visions of contemporary architectural space. Expressive freedoms, which in the pre-digital era stemmed from visionary approaches, now become feasible thanks to modern modelling technologies. They determine a mutation of working processes and creative elaboration, proving to be more than just a mechanical tool without theoretical-speculative implications. Transformation of reality into updatable and modifiable data flows leads towards a new weltanschauung, characterised by the modern paradigms of precariousness and flexibility. Digital world, based on processing of algorithms and information, becomes a link between art and mathematics. The theoretical universe based on the fourth dimension and non-euclidean geometries, which had produced interesting artistic effects in the avantgarde movements of the 20th century, now finds a means of expression in the field of architecture. The paper explores the assumptions of contemporary architectural expressions and the implications that digital technologies have had on changes in architecture since the 1990s: from the fluid and deconstructed shapes linked to multidimensional experiments to the most recent experiences, placed at the border between art and architecture, that are experimenting with the transfer of digital language into the real world.

Coridothymus capitatus is a perennial herb with aromatic leaves and flowers, distinct from Thymus vulgaris in its chemical composition, resulting in a unique Thymus Essential Oil (TEO). A main component of TEO, carvacrol, is known for its antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. Carvacrol has potent antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties, generating interest in traditional medicine. However, studies on its antiviral activity are limited. Given the rise in viral infections and limitations of synthetic antiviral drugs, natural antiviral agents are promising due to their efficacy, lower resistance development, and reduced side effects. This study assessed the antiviral efficacy of TEO compared to that of pure carvacrol. We tested various viruses, revealing significant inhibitory effects of TEO on the replication of only Simplexvirus humanalpha1 (HSV-1) and Simplexvirus humanalpha2 (HSV-2), with specific interference during the early stages of the viral replication cycle after the adsorption period. TEO exhibited inhibitory effects at doses below the cytotoxic threshold, with IC50 values of 47 μg/mL for HSV-1 and 40 μg/mL for HSV-2. Maximum virus inhibition was achieved when TEO was added within 90 min post-infection, indicating interference with early viral replication steps. These findings highlight the potential of TEO as a natural antiviral agent and suggest further research into its mechanisms and clinical applications.

Abstract Scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory are known to exhibit kinematic structures which hint to an underlying kinematic algebra that is dual to the gauge group color algebra. This color-kinematics duality is still poorly understood in terms of conventional Feynman rules, or from a Lagrangian formalism. In this work, we present explicit Lagrangians whose Feynman rules generate duality-satisfying tree-level BCJ numerators, to any multiplicity in the next-to-MHV sector of pure Yang-Mills theory. Our Lagrangians make use of at most three pairs of auxiliary fields (2, 1, 0-forms) — surprisingly few compared to previous attempts of Lagrangians at low multiplicities. To restrict the Lagrangian freedom it is necessary to make several non-trivial assumptions regarding field content, kinetic terms, and interactions, which we discuss in some detail. Future progress likely hinges on relaxing these assumptions.

This study, conducted on the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Adrano (CT), is part of a wider research aimed at the knowledge, valorization, and fruition of the theatrical and cinematographic heritage of Catania and its municipalities, through digital surveying techniques. This architectural heritage represents a powerful bond to the past for the city and its inhabitants. However, its typological connotations are often neglected or changed. Therefore, understanding these architectures is an essential step in their protection.The Teatro Massimo Bellini is located within a historicized urban space near the historic municipal garden, behind the ancient axis of Garibaldi Street, where the Mother Church and the Norman castle stand.Previous investigations conducted on the theater are purely historical-literary. No archival documents have currently been found to testify about its original stylistic formal and geometric characteristics, especially of the spaces that have been rearranged over time.Due to its typological and geometrical characteristics, we decided to proceed through an integrated survey, which could provide the necessary data for the graphic reconstruction of the building, ranging from an urban scale to a detailed scale.The presented study aims to experiment and integrate LIDAR (TLS) and SfM techniques (UAS) to obtain a three-dimensional data model useful to document the entire spatiality of the opera and its urban context. Sialidosis is an ultra-rare multisystemic lysosomal disease caused by mutations in the neuraminidase 1 (NEU1) gene. The severe type II form of the disease manifests with a prenatal/infantile or juvenile onset, bone abnormalities, severe neuropathology, and visceromegaly. A subset of these patients present with nephrosialidosis, characterized by abrupt onset of fulminant glomerular nephropathy. We studied the pathophysiological mechanism of the disease in 2 NEU1-deficient mouse models, a constitutive Neu1-knockout, Neu1ΔEx3, and a conditional phagocyte-specific knockout, Neu1Cx3cr1ΔEx3. Mice of both strains exhibited terminal urinary retention and severe kidney damage with elevated urinary albumin levels, loss of nephrons, renal fibrosis, presence of storage vacuoles, and dysmorphic mitochondria in the intraglomerular and tubular cells. Glycoprotein sialylation in glomeruli, proximal distal tubules, and distal tubules was drastically increased, including that of an endocytic reabsorption receptor megalin. The pool of megalin bearing O-linked glycans with terminal galactose residues, essential for protein targeting and activity, was reduced to below detection levels. Megalin levels were severely reduced, and the protein was directed to lysosomes instead of the apical membrane. Together, our results demonstrated that desialylation by NEU1 plays a crucial role in processing and cellular trafficking of megalin and that NEU1 deficiency in sialidosis impairs megalin-mediated protein reabsorption.

Breast Cancer (BC), a prominent oncological disease, has become an increasing concern for countless women across the globe. The rising incidences underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive post-treatment rehabilitation strategy to address the challenges posed by intensive treatments. This rehabilitation is not merely about physical recovery but requires a holistic lens, considering disability as an overarching loss of functional integrity. Embracing this perspective enables healthcare professionals to devise strategies that focus on the entirety of a patient's well-being. Central to this approach is the Individual Rehabilitation Project (IRP), a tailored program designed to elevate the post-treatment quality of life. It stresses the importance of early interventions, particularly after surgery, to mitigate potential complications and functional deficits. Physical activities, curated and executed under professional guidance, form a cornerstone of the rehabilitation process. Depending on each patient's specific condition and stage of recovery, a range of exercises is recommended. Beyond the immediate post-surgical phase, patients are introduced to adaptive physical endeavors like fencing and dragon boating. Such activities are not merely for physical recovery but also play a significant role in enhancing self-esteem, self-perception, and overall mental resilience. Once acute and post-acute care has been completed, and a clinical functional stability is reached, BC patients, now better defined as person with BC disability (PwBC). As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that BC rehabilitation is an intricate dance between physical recovery and psychological well-being, necessitating an individualized, patient-centric approach. Furthermore, this opinion paper highlights the urgency for rigorous research, especially randomized trials, to refine and validate the efficacy of these rehabilitation procedures, ensuring that patients not only survive but thrive post-treatment.
