1. Inclusive hadronic decay rate of the $\tau$ lepton from lattice QCD: the $\bar u s$ flavour channel and the Cabibbo angle

Abstract

We present a lattice determination of the inclusive decay rate of the process $\tau\mapsto X_{us} \nu_\tau$ in which the $\tau$ lepton decays into a generic hadronic state $X_{us}$ with $\bar u s$ flavour quantum numbers. Our results have been obtained in $n_f=2+1+1$ iso-symmetric QCD with full non-perturbative accuracy, without any OPE approximation and, except for the presently missing long-distance isospin-breaking corrections, include a solid estimate of all sources of theoretical uncertainties. This has been possible by using the Hansen-Lupo-Tantalo method [1] that we have already successfully applied in [2] to compute the inclusive decay rate of the process $\tau\mapsto X_{ud} \nu_\tau$ in the $\bar u d$ flavour channel. By combining our first-principles theoretical results with the presently-available experimental data we extract the CKM matrix element $\vert V_{us}\vert$, the Cabibbo angle, with a $0.9$\% accuracy, dominated by the experimental error., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Abstract

In the case of the intermediate window we get the value $a_\mu^{\rm W}({\rm ETMC}) = 236.3\,(1.3) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with the result $a_\mu^{\rm W}({\rm BMW}) = 236.7\,(1.4) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [3] by the BMW collaboration as well as with the recent determination by the CLS/Mainz group of $a_\mu^{\rm W}({\rm CLS}) = 237.30\,(1.46) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [4]. However, it is larger than the dispersive result of $a_\mu^{\rm W}(e^+ e^-) = 229.4\,(1.4) \cdot 10^{-10}$ [2] by approximately $3.6$ standard deviations. The tension increases to approximately $4.5$ standard deviations if we average our ETMC result with those by BMW and CLS/Mainz. Our accurate lattice results in the short and intermediate windows point to a possible deviation of the $e^+ e^-$ cross section data with respect to Standard Model predictions in the low and intermediate energy regions, but not in the high energy region., Comment: 78 pages, 22 figures, 14 tables. Abstract

We present results for the light, strange and charm quark masses using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermion ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing, including two ensembles simulated with the physical value of the pion mass. Abstract

We present a calculation of the up, down, strange and charm quark masses performed within the lattice QCD framework. We use the twisted mass fermion action and carry out simulations that include in the sea two light mass-degenerate quarks, as well as the strange and charm quarks. In the analysis we use gauge ensembles simulated at three values of the lattice spacing and with light quarks that correspond to pion masses in the range from 350 MeV to the physical value, while the strange and charm quark masses are tuned approximately to their physical values. We use several quantities to set the scale in order to check for finite lattice spacing effects and in the continuum limit we get compatible results. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI'-MOM method converted into the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme. For the determination of the quark masses we use physical observables from both the meson and the baryon sectors, obtaining $m_{ud} = 3.636(66)(^{+60}_{-57})$~MeV and $m_s = 98.7(2.4)(^{+4.0}_{-3.2})$~MeV in the $\overline{\rm MS}(2\,{\rm GeV})$ scheme and $m_c = 1036(17)(^{+15}_{-8})$~MeV in the $\overline{\rm MS}(3\,{\rm GeV})$ scheme, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are combinations of systematic errors. For the quark mass ratios we get $m_s / m_{ud} = 27.17(32)(^{+56}_{-38})$ and $m_c / m_s = 11.48(12)(^{+25}_{-19})$., Comment: 37 pages, 23 figures, 24 tables. One reference added

Abstract

We present a determination of the ratio of kaon and pion leptonic decay constants in isosymmetric QCD (isoQCD), $f_K / f_\pi$, making use of the gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavors of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks, including configurations close to the physical point for all dynamical flavors. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing ranging from $\sim 0.068$ to $\sim 0.092$ fm with linear lattice size up to $L \sim 5.5$~fm. The scale is set by the PDG value of the pion decay constant, $f_\pi^{isoQCD} = 130.4~(2)$ MeV, at the isoQCD pion point, $M_\pi^{isoQCD} = 135.0~(2)$ MeV, obtaining for the gradient-flow (GF) scales the values $w_0 = 0.17383~(63)$ fm, $\sqrt{t_0} = 0.14436~(61)$ fm and $t_0 / w_0 = 0.11969~(62)$ fm. The data are analyzed within the framework of SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) without resorting to the use of renormalized quark masses. At the isoQCD kaon point $M_K^{isoQCD} = 494.2~(4)$ MeV we get $(f_K / f_\pi)^{isoQCD} = 1.1995~(44)$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties. 10. Comparison of lattice QCD+QED predictions for radiative leptonic decays of light mesons with experimental data

Abstract

We present a comparison of existing experimental data for the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ell\nu_\ell\gamma$, where $P=K$ or $\pi$ and $\ell=e$ or $\mu$, from the KLOE, PIBETA, E787, ISTRA+ and OKA collaborations with theoretical predictions based on the recent non-perturbative determinations of the structure-dependent vector and axial-vector form factors, $F_V$ and $F_A$ respectively. These were obtained using lattice QCD+QED simulations at order $O(\alpha_{\mathrm{em}})$ in the electromagnetic coupling. We find good agreement with the KLOE data on $K\to e\nu_e\gamma$ decays from which the form factor $F^+=F_V+F_A$ can be determined. For $K\to\mu\nu_\mu\gamma$ decays we observe differences of up to 3\,-\,4 standard deviations at large photon energies between the theoretical predictions and the data from the E787, ISTRA+ and OKA experiments and similar discrepancies in some kinematical regions with the PIBETA experiment on radiative pion decays. A global study of all the kaon-decay data within the Standard Model results in a poor fit, largely because at large photon energies the KLOE and E787 data cannot be reproduced simultaneously in terms of the same form factor $F^+$. The discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental values of the form factor $F^-=F_V-F_A$ is even more pronounced. These observations motivate future improvements of both the theoretical and experimental determinations of the structure-dependent form factors $F^+$ and $F^-$, as well as further theoretical investigations of models of "new physics" which might for example, include possible flavor changing interactions beyond $V - A$ and/or non-universal corrections to the lepton couplings., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, 11 tables. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Astronomical data are gathered through a very large number of heterogeneous techniques and stored in very diversified and often incompatible data repositories. Moreover in the e-science environment, it is needed to integrate services across distributed, heterogeneous, dynamic "virtual organizations" formed by different resources within a single enterprise and/or external resource sharing and service provider relationships. The DAME/VONeural project, run jointly by the University Federico II, INAF (National Institute of Astrophysics) Astronomical Observatories of Napoli and the California Institute of Technology, aims at creating a single, sustainable, distributed e-infrastructure for data mining and exploration in massive data sets, to be offered to the astronomical (but not only) community as a web application. The framework makes use of distributed computing environments (e.g. S.Co.P.E.) and matches the international IVOA standards and requirements. The integration process is technically challenging due to the need of achieving a specific quality of service when running on top of different native platforms. Abstract

VO-Neural is the natural evolution of the Astroneural project which was started in 1994 with the aim to implement a suite of neural tools for data mining in astronomical massive data sets. At a difference with its ancestor, which was implemented under Matlab, VO-Neural is written in C++, object oriented, and it is specifically tailored to work in distributed computing architectures. Abstract

Background: Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDC) might be an inflammation inhibitor in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, BDC is almost insoluble in water, poorly absorbed by the organism, and degrades rapidly. We thus developed a new nanoformulation of BDC based on H-Ferritin nanocages (BDC-HFn). Methods: We tested the BDC-HFn solubility, stability, and ability to cross a blood-brain barrier (BBB) model. We tested the effect of BDC-HFn on AD and control (CTR) PBMCs to evaluate the transcriptomic profile by RNA-seq. Results: We developed a nanoformulation with a diameter of 12 nm to improve the solubility and stability. The comparison of the transcriptomics analyses between AD patients before and after BDC-HFn treatment showed a major number of DEG (2517). The pathway analysis showed that chemokines and macrophages activation differed between AD patients and controls after BDC-HFn treatment. BDC-HFn binds endothelial cells from the cerebral cortex and crosses through a BBB in vitro model. Conclusions: Our data showed how BDC-Hfn could improve the stability of BDC. Significant differences in genes associated with inflammation between the same patients before and after BDC-Hfn treatment have been found. Inflammatory genes that are upregulated between AD and CTR after BDC-HFn treatment are converted and downregulated, suggesting a possible therapeutic approach.

Abstract

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a mental illness characterized by aberrant synaptic plasticity and connectivity. A large bulk of evidence suggests genetic and functional links between postsynaptic abnormalities and SCZ. Here, we performed quantitative PCR and Western blotting analysis in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and hippocampus of SCZ patients to investigate the mRNA and protein expression of three key spine shapers: the actin-binding protein cyclase-associated protein 2 (CAP2), the sheddase a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10), and the synapse-associated protein 97 (SAP97). Our analysis of the SCZ post-mortem brain indicated increased DLG1 mRNA in DLPFC and decreased CAP2 mRNA in the hippocampus of SCZ patients, compared to non-psychiatric control subjects, while the ADAM10 transcript was unaffected. Conversely, no differences in CAP2, SAP97, and ADAM10 protein levels were detected between SCZ and control individuals in both brain regions. To assess whether DLG1 and CAP2 transcript alterations were selective for SCZ, we also measured their expression in the superior frontal gyrus of patients affected by neurodegenerative disorders, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Interestingly, also in Parkinson’s disease patients, we found a selective reduction of CAP2 mRNA levels relative to controls but unaltered protein levels. Taken together, we reported for the first time altered CAP2 expression in the brain of patients with psychiatric and neurological disorders, thus suggesting that aberrant expression of this gene may contribute to synaptic dysfunction in these neuropathologies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND The present study reports perioperative changes in PCT levels occuring in cardiac patients with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) undergoing laparotomy. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that PCT kinetics may confirm the presence of AMI after cardiac surgery, distinguishing between bowel infarction and diffuse ischemia. METHODS PCT values from adult patients undergoing laparotomy for AMI after elective or urgent cardiac surgery (January 2010 - December 2019) were determinated at the ICU admission after cardiac surgery, 24 hours later and at the onset of clinical symptoms. Patients affected by diffuse intestinal ischemia with no need for bowel resection were allocated to Group A (n.8), patients presented with intestinal necrosis requiring small or large bowel resection were allocated to Group B (n.12). RESULTS At the beginning of the abdominal symptoms, PCT levels increased in both group, compared to those immediately after cardiac surgery. Abstract

Background Dystonia is characterized by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions, leading to abnormal posturing and twisting movements. In pediatric patients, dystonia often negatively influences quality of life. Pharmacological treatment for dystonia is often inadequate and causes adverse effects. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) appears to be a valid therapeutic option for pharmacoresistant dystonia in children. Methods To illustrate the current clinical practice, we hereby describe two pediatric cases of monogenetic movement disorders presenting with dystonia and treated with DBS. We provide a literature review of similar previously described cases and on different clinical aspects of DBS in pediatric dystonia. Results The first patient, a 6-year-old girl with severe dystonia, chorea, and myoclonus due to an ADCY5 gene mutation, received DBS in an elective setting. The second patient, an 8-year-old boy with GNAO1 -related dystonia and chorea, underwent emergency DBS due to a pharmacoresistant status dystonicus. A significant amelioration of motor symptoms (65% on the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale) was observed postoperatively in the first patient and her personal therapeutic goals were achieved. DBS was previously reported in five patients with ADCY5 -related movement disorders, of which three showed objective improvement. Emergency DBS in our second patient resulted in the successful termination of his GNAO1 -related status dystonicus, this being the eighth case reported in the literature. Conclusion DBS can be effective in monogenetic pediatric dystonia and should be considered early in the disease course. To better evaluate the effects of DBS on patients' functioning, patient-centered therapeutic goals should be discussed in a multidisciplinary approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a lattice determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_{\mu}^{\rm HVP}$, in the so-called short and intermediate time-distance windows, $a_{\mu}^{\rm SD}$ and $a_{\mu}^{\rm W}$. We employ gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavours tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing equal to $\simeq 0.057, 0.068$ and $0.080$ fm with spatial lattice sizes up to $L \simeq 7.6$~fm. For the short distance window we obtain $a_\mu^{\rm SD} = 69.27\,(34) \cdot 10^{-10}$, in agreement with the dispersive determination based on experimental $e^+ e^-$ data. For the intermediate window we get instead $a_\mu^{\rm W} = 236.3\,(1.3) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with recent determinations by other lattice collaborations, but disagrees with the dispersive determination at the level of $3.6\,\sigma$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, LATTICE 2022

Abstract

We present a comparison of existing experimental data for the radiative leptonic decays $P\to\ell\nu_\ell\gamma$, where $P=K$ or $\pi$ and $\ell=e$ or $\mu$, from the KLOE, PIBETA, E787, ISTRA+ and OKA collaborations with theoretical predictions based on the recent non-perturbative determinations of the structure-dependent vector and axial-vector form factors, $F_V$ and $F_A$ respectively. These were obtained using lattice QCD+QED simulations at order $O(\alpha_{\mathrm{em}})$ in the electromagnetic coupling. We find good agreement with the KLOE data on $K\to e\nu_e\gamma$ decays from which the form factor $F^+=F_V+F_A$ can be determined. For $K\to\mu\nu_\mu\gamma$ decays we observe differences of up to 3\,-\,4 standard deviations at large photon energies between the theoretical predictions and the data from the E787, ISTRA+ and OKA experiments and similar discrepancies in some kinematical regions with the PIBETA experiment on radiative pion decays. A global study of all the kaon-decay data within the Standard Model results in a poor fit, largely because at large photon energies the KLOE and E787 data cannot be reproduced simultaneously in terms of the same form factor $F^+$. The discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental values of the form factor $F^-=F_V-F_A$ is even more pronounced. These observations motivate future improvements of both the theoretical and experimental determinations of the structure-dependent form factors $F^+$ and $F^-$, as well as further theoretical investigations of models of "new physics" which might for example, include possible flavor changing interactions beyond $V - A$ and/or non-universal corrections to the lepton couplings., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, 11 tables. Abstract

Not everyone has equal access to culture: significant barriers exist for consumers, amateurs and professional contributors. People with disabilities may face barriers due to the inaccessibility of cultural premises, venues or contents. People in wheelchairs for instance cannot attend a concert if the only way into a hall is up a flight of stairs. Lack of access to cultural sites reduces the ability of people with disabilities to enjoy them fully. According to the approach first proposed by Sen (1999), capability building causes individuals to improve their level of self-determination, with a positive impact on healthserving habits and practices. Both cultural access per se and capability building – which is naturally associated to it – contribute to subjective well-being in a positive way. While this by-product of cultural participation is mostly unintentional, it may however be turned into a new instance of the welfare policy once properly recognised as a systematic spillover effect of cultural participation on individual and social health. Using ISTAT data for 2016, this work provides a measure of the degree of exclusion of people with disabilities from theatres and museums in Italy. Finally, it provides economic policy recipes aimed to reduce architectural, environmental, and social barriers hindering cultural access.

Abstract

Introduction: oncololytic adenoviruses (OAds), viruses constructed to replicate in tumor cells, improve the outcome of cancer therapy in some cases, such as sarcomas. However, the molecular heterogeneity of tumors requires specific and personalized cancer treatments in order to set up more adequate and effective therapies. Methods: by using the array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array-CGH), a molecular approach method, we aimed to identify chromosomal aberrations or Copy Number Variants (CNVs) in three different tumor cell lines: HCT116, SW872 and A2058 selected for their Coxsackievirus and Adenovirus receptor (CAR) expression profile. Results: the cells showed several duplications of genes involved in replicative Adenovirus cycle (binding, internalization, escape) in the core transport, and in the escape of the viral DNA from the capsid. Conclusion: in this study, our aim was to identify chromosomal alterations in genes involved in the OAd replication cycle process. Array-CGH method could be useful to design a platform for a screening analysis in order to identify mutations that can contribute to oncolytic virotherapy approach generating a personalized strategy for tumor suppression.

Abstract

We present a determination of the ratio of kaon and pion leptonic decay constants in isosymmetric QCD (ISOQCD), fK/fπ, making use of the gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf=2+1+1 flavors of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks, including configurations close to the physical point for all dynamical flavors. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing ranging from ∼0.068 to ∼0.092 fm with linear lattice size up to L∼5.5 fm. The scale is set by the particle data group (PDG) value of the pion decay constant, fπISOQCD=130.4(2) MeV, at the ISOQCD pion point, MπISOQCD=135.0(2) MeV, obtaining for the gradient-flow scales the values w0=0.17383(63) fm, t0=0.14436(61) fm and t0/w0=0.11969(62) fm. The data are analyzed within the framework of SU(2) chiral perturbation theory without resorting to the use of renormalized quark masses. At the ISOQCD kaon point MKISOQCD=494.2(4) MeV we get (fK/fπ)ISOQCD=1.1995(44), where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties. Implications for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vus| and for the first-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the perioperative and short-term outcomes of robotic pyelolithotomy (RP) and laparoscopic pyelolithotomy (LP) for the treatment of renal stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 39 patients who underwent robotic or laparoscopic pyelolithotomy from January 2015 to December 2018. RESULTS: The preoperative characteristics of the two groups were comparable. The mean operative time was 173 ± 51 and 182 ± 62 min in the RP and LP groups, respectively (p=0.6). We present a preliminary study of the pion, kaon and D-meson masses and decay constants in isosymmetric QCD, as well as a preliminary result for the light-quark renormalized mass. The analysis is based on the gauge ensembles produced by ETMC with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 flavours of Wilson-clover twisted mass quarks, spanning a range of lattice spacings from ∼ 0.10 to 0.07 fm and include configurations at the physical pion point on lattices with linear size up to L ∼ 5.6 fm.

Abstract

Background: Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is increasing worldwide, mostly because of improved technology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current status of CSII in Italy. Materials and Methods: Physicians from 272 diabetes centers received a questionnaire investigating clinical features, pump technology, and management of patients on CSII. Results: Two hundred seventeen centers (79.8%) joined the study and, by the end of April 2013, gave information about 10,152 patients treated with CSII: 98.2% with type 1 diabetes mellitus, 81.4% adults, 57% female, and 61% with a conventional pump versus 39% with a sensor-augmented pump. CSII advanced functions were used by 68% of patients, and glucose sensors were used 12 days per month on average. Fifty-eight percent of diabetes centers had more than 20 patients on CSII, but there were differences among centers and among regions. The main indication for CSII was poor glucose control. Dropout was mainly due to pump wearability or nonoptimal glycemic control. Twenty-four hour assistance was guaranteed in 81% of centers. A full diabetes team (physician+ nurse + dietician + psychologist) was available in 23% of adult-care diabetes centers and in 53%of pediatric diabetes units. Conclusions: CSII keeps increasing in Italy. More work is needed to ensure uniform treatment strategies throughout the country and to improve pump use.
