Past shallow-water carbonate environments of the main island of New Caledonia (NC) have been subject to high terrigenous influx derived from the erosion of ultramafic obducted nappes and are therefore a relevant case study for characterizing neritic carbonate production in mixed carbonate-siliciclastic systems under a tropical climate. More particularly, we focused on Burdigalian carbonate sedimentary records cropping out on the western coast of NC, in the Népoui area. Based on a comprehensive sedimentological study of cores and outcrops, we established a new depositional model of an alluvial fan to carbonate ramp transition. Shallow-water (euphotic) carbonate production was dominated by seagrass-related biota and corals derived from small-sized bioconstructions. Extensional tectonics and associated normal faulting, driven by post-obduction isostatic rebound, favored carbonate ramp aggradation and preservation. The carbonate ramp was incised by conglomerate-filled terminal distributary channels, which indicate that terrigenous inputs remained significant during marine transgression and did not inhibit the development of seagrass and scleractinian carbonate factories. Phytal substrates induced by seagrass and/or macro-algae seafloor colonization strongly controlled the nature of carbonate production and promoted the accumulation of foraminiferal-coralline algal sediments. Seagrass development at the front of the fan delta is interpreted to have controlled the preservation of a diverse and significant carbonate production by reducing water turbidity and by limiting the risk of suffocation for filter-feeding biota in such a high terrigenous influx setting.

Takapoto Atoll (northern Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia, Central Pacific) was selected as a test area to clarify the conditions of atoll island accretion in relation to mid- to late-Holocene sea-level changes. Surveys were conducted along two distinct cross-island profiles, on the windward coast of the atoll. In addition, the stratigraphy of an ocean-facing islet was described from an excavation in order to reconstruct the successive island accretionary stages. At both sites, the basement of the atoll-rims consists of conglomerate pavements on which lie shingle ridges, reaching 4 m in elevation. Stratigraphic analysis of the excavated ridge reveals alternation of gravelly sand-supported to gravel-dominated sediments. The chronology of island accretion is based on dating of 41 U/Th surface and excavated coral specimens. Ridge initiation occurred from about 1000 yr BP when sea level was close to its present position, shingle deposits progressively prograded from the lagoon margins oceanwards and were partially cemented at their bases. Cementation may have increased the resistance of the islets to erosion. As a result, some island lands accumulated and have persisted over the last millennium. The modern gross island morphology was acquired during the last 500 years. This model can be considered to be of regional value for the northern Tuamotu islands, adjusted for local thermal subsidence, hydroisostasy and/or lithospheric flexure. Compared to some other Indo-Pacific reef islands, island initiation at Takapoto appears to be have been delayed by 2 to 4 millennia, probably in response to retardation in the reef catching-up with mid-Holocene sea level. Dating of individual coarse-grained coral clasts allowed the major wave-surge events that have hit Takapoto to be identified for the last millennium. A morphometrical method to quantify and characterize coral corallites using Richardson Plots and Kaye's notion of fractal dimensions is presented. A Jurassic coral species (Aplosmilia spinosa) and five Recent coral species were compared using the Box-Counting Method. This method enables the characterization of their morphologies at calicular and septal levels by their fractal dimensions (structural and textural). Moreover, it is possible to determine differences between species of Montastraea and to tackle the high phenotypic plasticity of Montastraea annularis. The use of fractal dimensions versus conventional methods (e.g., measurements of linear dimensions with a calliper, landmarks, Fourier analyses) to explore a rugged boundary object is discussed. It appears that fractal methods have the potential to considerably simplify the morphometrical and statistical approaches, and be a valuable addition to methods based on Euclidian geometry
