Abstract

The development of technologies devoted to re-cycle and/or re-use wastes generated from the industrial processing of agricultural raw materials is a research topic attracting increasing attention. In this work, different carbonaceous biomass-derived materials were prepared with the aim of compare the performances of materials with different chemical surface properties as gas adsorbents. The final goal of the work is to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using a real biomass as a raw material for the preparation of gas sorbents. Different biomasses were used for the preparation of gas adsorbents: chitosan and thistle (Cirsium vulgare) to produce N-rich char types, rice husk, lemon peels and pectin to produce O-rich char types. Chemical procedures to increase the nitrogen content as well as the surface area and the porosity of the biomass-derived materials were also applied. A selection of the obtained materials, after a deep chemico-physical characterization, has been tested for gas adsorption at high pressure in a volumetric analyzer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the potential of waste pyrolysis products to act as alternative binders or additives in asphalt preparation with the ultimate goals of effective resource use, recovery and recycling, conservation of non-renewable resources, reduction of production costs and achievement of a regenerative circular economy. Char and oil deriving from the pyrolysis of civil and agricultural wastes have been considered as new-concept alternative additives for asphalt preparation. Following an in-depth chemical and structural characterization, oil and char samples have been tested as additives in asphalt binder preparation. After the standard rheological characterization, to test the possible anti-ageing effect exerted by char and oil samples used as additives, the bituminous preparations were subjected to a short-term simulated ageing (RTFOT method) and the resulting mechanical properties evaluated. The results indicate that all the biochar samples were able to strength the overall chemical structure of bitumens and are therefore suitable to be used as bitumen modifier. It is noteworthy that two char samples (char from tires and char from lemon peels) exhibited also anti-ageing properties. As concerns bio-oil samples, in one case (oil from tires pyrolysis) a rejuvenating action is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

33. CO2Capture and Gas Storage Capacities Enhancement of HKUST-1 by Hybridization with Functionalized Graphene-like Materials

Abstract

The role of graphene related material (GRM) functionalization on the structural and adsorption properties of MOF-based hybrids was deepened by exploring the use of three GRMs obtained from the chemical demolition of a nanostructured carbon black. Oxidized graphene-like (GL-ox), hydrazine reduced graphene-like (GL), and amine-grafted graphene-like (GL-NH2) materials have been used for the preparation of Cu-HKUST-1 based hybrids. After a full structural characterization, the hybrid materials underwent many adsorption–desorption cycles to evaluate their capacities to capture CO2and store CH4at high pressure. All the MOF-based samples showed very high specific surface area (SSA) values and total pore volumes, but different pore size distributions attributed to the instauration of interactions between the MOF precursors and the specific functional groups on the GRM surface during MOF growth. All the samples showed a good affinity toward both gases (CO2and CH4) and a comparable structural stability and integrity (possible aging was excluded). The trend of the maximum storage capacity values of the four MOF samples toward CO2and CH4was HKUST-1/GL-NH2> HKUST-1 > HKUST-1/GL-ox > HKUST-1/GL. Overall, the measured CO2and CH4uptakes were in line with or higher than those already reported in the open literature for Cu-HKUST-1 based hybrids evaluated in similar conditions.

Abstract

In the manifold of materials for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) sensing, graphene related materials (GRMs) gain special attention thanks to their versatility and overall chemico-physical tunability as a function of specific applications. In this work, the sensing performances of graphene-like (GL) layers, a new material belonging to the GRM family, are tested against ethanol and n-butanol. Two typologies of GL samples were produced by employing two different approaches and tested in view of their application as VOC sensors. The experiments were per-formed under atmospheric pressure, in dry air, and at room temperature and demonstrated that the sensing capabilities are related to the film surface features. The results indicated that GL films are promising candidates for the detection of low concentrations of VOCs at room temperature. The present investigation thus paves the way for VOC sensing optimization using cost-effective and easily scalable materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen structure of the plant pathogen Rhizobium radiobacter strain TT9 and its possible role in a plant-microbe interaction was investigated. The analyses disclosed the presence of two O-antigens, named Poly1 and Poly2. The repetitive unit of Poly2 constitutes a 4-α-l-rhamnose linked to a 3-α-d-fucose residue. Surprisingly, Poly1 turned out to be a novel type of biopolymer in which the repeating unit is formed by a monosaccharide and an amino-acid derivative, so that the polymer has alternating glycosidic and amidic bonds joining the two units: 4-amino-4-deoxy-3-O-methyl-d-fucose and (2′R,3′R,4′S)-N-methyl-3′,4′-dihydroxy-3′-methyl-5′-oxoproline). Differently from the O-antigens of LPSs from other pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, these two O-antigens do not activate the oxidative burst, an early innate immune response in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, explaining at least in part the ability of this R. radiobacter strain to avoid host defenses during a plant infection process.

Abstract

Graphene-like (GL) layers and eumelanin-based graphene-like (EUGL) hybrids have been investigated through THz time domain spectroscopy. The interest in these materials lies on their peculiar chemical-physical properties: the former are conductive water stable materials, whereas the latter are biocompatible materials with good conductive and adhesive properties. Both exhibit promising optoelectronic and bioelectronic applications. We measured mixtures of GL layers or EUGL hybrids with KBr, shaped in pellets with uniform thickness, in order to circumvent problems related to sample inhomogeneity and roughness. A mean field theory was applied to extract direct information on permittivity and conductivity. Data have been carefully fitted through the Drude-Smith theory, confirming the conductive nature of the hybrid materials.
