Summary: Faster vegetative growth and early maturity/harvest reduce plant life cycle time and are important agricultural traits facilitating early crop rotation. GA is a key hormone governing developmental transitions that determine growth speed in plants. An EAR‐motif repressor, SlERF36 that regulates various growth transitions, partly through regulation of the GA pathway and GA levels, was identified in tomato. Suppression of SlERF36 delayed germination, slowed down organ growth and delayed the onset of flowering time, fruit harvest and whole‐plant senescence by 10–15 days. Its over‐expression promoted faster growth by accelerating all these transitions besides increasing organ expansion and plant height substantially. The plant life cycle and fruit harvest were completed 20–30 days earlier than control without affecting yield, in glasshouse as well as net‐house conditions, across seasons and generations. These changes in life cycle were associated with reciprocal changes in expression of GA pathway genes and basal GA levels between suppression and over‐expression lines. SlERF36 interacted with the promoters of two GA2 oxidase genes, SlGA2ox3 and SlGA2ox4, and the DELLA gene, SlDELLA, reducing their transcription and causing a 3–5‐fold increase in basal GA3/GA4 levels. Its suppression increased SlGA2ox3/4 transcript levels and reduced GA3/GA4 levels by 30%–50%. SlERF36 is conserved across families making it an important candidate in agricultural and horticultural crops for manipulation of plant growth and developmental transitions to reduce life cycles for faster harvest. This research examined the simultaneous influences of emotional intelligence, adjustment to university, authoritative versus other parenting style, and high school average on first year university students' grade point average (GPA) via structural equation modeling. The participants were 299 first year students from the social science faculty at Laurentian University, Canada. The sample was comprised of 86 males (28.7%) and 213 females (71%); most students (96.7%) were between the ages of 17 and 23. The results showed that high school average had a direct influence on first year university GPA. Emotional Intelligence was not directly associated with first year university GPA, but it was significantly associated with adjustment to university which in turn was significantly associated with the first year GPA. This tends to suggest that the influence of emotional intelligence on academic achievement may be mediated by adjustment to university. Furthermore, parenting style (authoritative versus other) had a significant influence on adjustment to university but not on emotional intelligence and university GPA. Students who came from families with authoritative parenting styles tended to be better adjusted than students who came from families with other parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive). Problem behaviors such as alcohol use, academic dishonesty and academic procrastination were found to have a negative influence on university GPA and adjustment to university. In conclusion, emotional intelligence and an authoritative parenting style are influential in enhancing adjustment to university which in turns affects academic achievement in university.

Youth from single-parent families report lower educational aspirations than those from two-parent families. This study explored the influence of background factors (gender, grade, parental education and SES), parental involvement with education, academic self-concept, and peer influences on educational aspirations. The participants were Canadian adolescents; 2751 from two parent and 681 from single-parent families. ANOVA results showed that adolescents from single-parent families scored significantly lower than adolescents from intact families on educational aspirations, and other predictor variables. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the pattern of relationships between educational aspirations and other factors was very similar for adolescents from both types of families; namely academic self-concept significantly predicted educational aspirations. The family involvement and background factors predicted educational aspirations via academic self-concept. Having academically oriented peers was especially beneficial to adolescents from single-parent families. Implications for intervention programs are discussed.

Structural equation modeling of data from 4,034 Canadian adolescents yielded a factor composed of academic achievement, extracurricular reading, attitudes toward school and homework, and parental educational expectations that predicted 76% of variance in educational aspirations. The purpose of the present study was to gather the perceptions of older, community-dwelling adults about factors they considered essential for them to remain living within the community. In-depth interviews were conducted with 103 men and women over the age of 65 years who were living in their own home or apartment, within an urban center. Factors such as finances, health, family support, a sense of identity, and a feeling of independence were perceived by older adults to contribute to their ability to remain living in the community. Importantly, older adults viewed threats to this continued independent living as both (a) factors connected to losses and maintenance of capability, but also (b) as impediments to further growth of their personal well-being. The paper examines the set of organizational factors that affect service delivery (job performances) in the hospitality industry. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 150 frontline hotel employees in Surat served as the study setting. Data was gathered through a self-administered questionnaire. Some of the tools used for analysis were Cronbach alpha, Mann-Whitney test, cross tabulation, and factor analysis. By reviewing literature, 22 constructs that affect service delivery in the organization were identified. Through factor analysis, the authors arrived at seven dimensions that affect service delivery, namely, organization personality, internal marketing activities, role demands and organizational leadership, employee empowerment, hygiene factors, organizational conflict and organization resources. Gender differences were found in the opinion related to dimensions such as job autonomy, empowerment, rewards, perceived organizational support, role conflict, role overload, and servant leadership. Objective: To examine factors relating to outcomes with off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) and to assess methods to improve the effectiveness of this approach, Setting: A small northern Ontario community hospital where surgical assistance, nursing familiarity with OPCAB and even anesthesiologist comfort varied, Design: Prospective collection of data with incremental audit of results and retrospective analysis of events, Methods: One hundred twenty-four consecutive patients, operated on by the same surgeon between April 1996 and June 2002, were selected on the basis of coronary anatomy. Progressively more complex multivessel revascularization, including that to the posterior wall, was undertaken over the course of the study period. Every attempt was made not to compromise use of arterial conduits, quality of anastomoses or completeness of revascularization. This represents the 'learning curve' of this study., Main Results: Approximately 6% of patients developed a hemodynamic crisis requiring acute on-pump conversion. This tended to occur in patients undergoing complex multivessel OPCAB surgery and was associated with subsequent increased blood transfusion rate, operative time and mortality (2.8%), and poorer angiographic graft patency. This has led to a more cautious strategy including making the decision to proceed with OPCAB only after intraoperative assessment., Conclusion: 'Simple' OPCAB on easily accessible coronary arteries resulted in excellent early outcomes. Complex multivessel OPCAB for triple vessel disease involving difficult to access arteries was more demanding with higher perioperative complications and less effectiveness. Early enthusiasm for complex multivessel surgery has been gradually replaced with a more conservative use of OPCAB with improved intraoperative procedures, both of which have led to more favourable outcomes.
