Abstract

International audience; AIS data streams provide new means for the monitoring and surveillance of the maritime traffic. The massive amount of data as well as the irregular time sampling and the noise are the main factors that make it difficult to design automatic tools and models for AIS data analysis. In this work, we propose a multi-task deep learning model for AIS data using a stream-based architecture, which reduces storage redundancies and computational requirements. To deal with noisy irregularly-sampled data, we explore variational recurrent neural networks. We demonstrate the relevance of the proposed deep learning architecture for a three-task setting, referring respectively to vessel trajectory reconstruction, abnormal behaviour detection and vessel type identification on a real AIS dataset.

Abstract

This paper is the result of a study promoted by the European Space Agency, aimed at research, design, development, and demonstration of a state-of-the-art receiver chain for telecommand (TC) links in space missions. The introduction of new, very powerful low-density parity-check codes for error correction, recently approved for the TC standard, allows to operate at significantly lower signal-to-noise ratios. This implies a number of challenges for the receivers in terms of frame synchronization, carrier acquisition, and tracking loops. Both the decoding and the receiver algorithms must be optimized as well, in view of permitting efficient hardware and software implementation, while ensuring excellent error rate performances. All these issues are faced in the present study through a fruitful co-operation between industry, research centers and universities. This paper presents a survey of the main results achieved, covering receiver enhancement investigation, simulation, implementation and breadboard description, © 2017 IEEE. Abstract

The NeXOS project aims to develop new multifunctional sensor systems supporting a number of scientific, technical and societal objectives, ranging from more precise monitoring and modelling of the marine environment to an improved management of fisheries. Several sensors will be developed, based on optical and passive acoustics technologies, addressing key environmental descriptors identified by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) for Good Environmental Status (GES). Two of the new sensors will also contribute to the European Union Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), with a focus on variables of interest to an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF). An objective is the improved cost-efficiency, from procurement to operations, via the implementation of several innovations, such as multiplatform integration, greater reliability through better antifouling management, greater sensor and data interoperability and the creation of market opportunities for European enterprises. Requirements will be further analysed for each new sensor system during the first phase of the project. Those will then be translated into engineering specifications, leading to the development phase. Sensors will then be tested, calibrated, integrated on several platform types, scientifically validated and demonstrated in the field. Translation to production and broad adoption are facilitated by participating industry. Abstract

The data suggest that slicks in cold upwelling waters are natural, and confirm that slicks are heavy oils when high sea states are present. This detection-classification methodology is validated with aircraft slick-tracking maps. In most cases, joint SAR and environmental data are sufficient to classify the slicks.

39. Analysis of the SAR imaging process of the ocean surface using Volterra models

Abstract

In this paper, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) process of the ocean surface mapping is studied using a decomposition based on a Volterra model. By a mathematical expansion of the complex exponential of the complete SAR transform, these models decompose the nonlinear distortion mechanisms of the SAR spectrum over different spectra of polynomial interactions. Thus, they offer an alternative modeling (to the exact SAR transform) giving a theoretical separation between the SAR Fourier components linearly derived from the sea surface elevation and the artifacts created by nonlinearities of. the SAR mapping of the. ocean surface. The main results of this paper consist of the systematic assessment of such an approximation of the ocean surface SAR imaging process. Higher order statistics (HOS) of the SAR transform and their calculus and implementation are presented. In fact, nonlinearity detection, location (in the Fourier domain) and quantification can only be performed by HOS, reduced here to a second-order Volterra Model. The Volterra expansion of the SAR imaging process opens new theoretical inversion schemes since under certain conditions on the linear part, Volterra models are easily invertible. Our method is first tested on simulated SAR images in order to validate the HOS tools. We then show results of this nonlinearity analysis performed on images from the ERS-1 satellite and we present cases of nonlinearity detection.

Abstract

An analysis of short-period wind fluctuations over Poker Flat, Alaska, obtained using the Poker Flat mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radar is presented. Results are shown for the troposphere and lower stratosphere as well as for the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Contours depict various levels of wind variance (m2s-2). These results pertain only to wind fluctuation periods lying between one and six hours. These particular fluctuations are generally considered to arise primarily from atmospheric gravity waves. Insofar as this is true, the figure thus describes a general climatology of gravity waves at high latitudes.

Abstract

Clear-air radar experiments were carried out on the southern coast of France during the (ALPEX) Alpine experiment program vertically directed stratosphere-troposphere-radars were set up with spacings of about 5 to 6 km. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the vertical velocity fluctuations were examined. The horizontal and vertical properties of gravity waves in the lower atmosphere were analyzed. The techniques used and the first results from this wave study are described.

Abstract

A joint France/U.S. experiment was conducted near the mouth of the Rhone river in southern France as part of the ALPEX program. This experiment used 3 vertically directed 50 MHz radars separated by 4 to 6 km. The main purpose of this experiment was to study the spatial characteristics of gravity waves. The good height resolution (750 meters) and time resolution (1 minute) and the continuous operation over many weeks have yielded high resolution vertical wind speed power spectra under a variety of synoptic conditions. Vertical spectra obtained during very quiet (low wind) conditions in the troposphere and lower stratosphere from a single site are presented.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the performance of telecommand space links affected by pulsed, continuous wave and pseudo-noise jamming. Countermeasures include coding, interleaving, and direct sequence spread spectrum. Binary and non-binary low-density parity-check codes, parallel turbo codes, and soft-decision decoded BCH codes are considered. We investigate the impact of different decoding algorithms, also taking into account the role of jamming state information, spreading processing gain and interleaving.
