- Abstract

Grow your own food and medicine with a step-by-step guide from the founder of The Grow NetworkImagine cultivating enough food to slash your grocery shopping in half--all in less than an hour a day in your own backyard. Sounds impossible, right? Marjory Wildcraft says it's not: She's been homesteading for almost twenty years and founded The Grow Network to teach hundreds of thousands of others--some with very little space or time, some city dwellers with rooftop gardens--how to do the same, from gardening, to raising chickens, to composting, to medicine-making.Wildcraft started her homesteading journey in search of a more sustainable and financially secure way of life. As she says, self-sufficiency offers practical rewards, but the real payoff is'true wealth': health, family, community, meaningful work, and living a life with purpose. This empowering way of life is possible for anyone who has a patch of dirt, small or large. The Grow System includes: • Essential advice for creating a balanced ecosystem in your backyard, with a basic recipe for homemade fertilizer • Step-by-step instructions for setting up a chicken coop and information on choosing the right breed • Home remedies for 12 common ailments, with 8 must-know medicine preparations. The Grow System provides a comprehensive strategy for producing healthy food and herbal medicine at home, and reclaiming the skills our ancestors used every day. It helps connect us to the environment and empowers us to lead healthier lives, without relying on big systems that are out of our control and insecure. It offers a path to a rich, reliable, and deeply satisfying life.

- Abstract
Healer and'plant spirit whisperer'Zorah Cholmondeley seeks to revolutionize the way we view our gardens and the natural world. Introducing the faery realms, she invites us to witness the tremendous variety and interplay of life-forms connected to the earth. Beyond the fae, she speaks of gnomes, dragons, angels and entities such as the Master Pan, all of whom have a unique part to play in the dynamics and health of our planet. And, it is their fondest wish that we should become aware of them! In The Enchanted Garden, Zorah shows how we can become allies with the fae and other nature guardians – to co-create a world with infinite possibilities for love, joy and togetherness. In a series of short chapters, she portrays faery history, introduces her muse Queen Maeve, explains how to create a garden for the faeries, discusses fears of connecting to the fae and the importance of fun and reverie, suggests how crystals can be used in the garden, describes the significance of weather, the moon, seasonal festivals, and much more. In the second part of the book she presents communications from the spirit beings of dozens of plants and trees – from aconitum to the yew tree – with meditations and spiritual insights. Can we learn to be sufficiently still in order to listen with our hearts to the natural world all around us, including the subtle ecosphere of the fae? This book is for anyone who seeks to relate to nature and their gardens more consciously.'The Enchanted Garden brings you closer to nature's wisdom and will surely spark faith in the Magic that's forever around and within us!'– Calista, author of Unicorn Rising and The Female Archangels'The Enchanted Garden will help you transform your garden into a sacred portal of elemental communication. - Abstract
One of Garden & Gun's Favorite Books of 2020 A distinguished psychiatrist and avid gardener offers an inspiring and consoling work about the healing effects of gardening and its ability to decrease stress and foster mental well-being in our everyday lives. The garden is often seen as a refuge, a place to forget worldly cares, removed from the “real” life that lies outside. But when we get our hands in the earth we connect with the cycle of life in nature through which destruction and decay are followed by regrowth and renewal. Gardening is one of the quintessential nurturing activities and yet we understand so little about it. The Well-Gardened Mind provides a new perspective on the power of gardening to change people's lives. Here, Sue Stuart-Smith investigates the many ways in which mind and garden can interact and explores how the process of tending a plot can be a way of sustaining an innermost self. Stuart-Smith's own love of gardening developed as she studied to become a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. From her grandfather's return from World War I to Freud's obsession with flowers to case histories with her own patients to progressive gardening programs in such places as Rikers Island prison in New York City, Stuart-Smith weaves thoughtful yet powerful examples to argue that gardening is much more important to our cognition than we think. Recent research is showing how green nature has direct antidepressant effects on humans. Essential and pragmatic, The Well-Gardened Mind is a book for gardeners and the perfect read for people seeking healthier mental lives.

- Abstract
In December of 2016, Kristin Topping's life changed in a fraction of a second. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. She was an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, she had a charmed career that took her all over the world as an engineering specialist, and she aspired to do great and important things. A split second was all it took to wash those dreams down the drain. A concussion, or in Kristin's case a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with loss of consciousness, is a serious injury that is accompanied with changes to a person's physical well-being, cognitive abilities, and can result in an altered mental state. The training and the social pressures instilled over twenty-two years of military service were a deterrent to her seeking help right away for her injury. Kristin wallowed in despair for months before she would admit the significance of her problem. Her relationships collapsed, her ability to function in and out of the workplace deteriorated and her purpose was lost. When she finally admitted to herself that she needed help, she was thrown into a rehabilitation labyrinth with the hope of regaining simple skills that were taken for granted. This isn't a sad story though; this is a story about how Kristin's indoor garden saved her life.

- Abstract
“A generous, poignant memoir” of loss, family secrets, and a quest to shape something beautiful out of the chaos of nature (Kirkus Reviews). Just as Alex and her husband buy a house in Toronto, set atop an acre of wilderness that extends into a natural gorge in the middle of the city, she learns that her father, a Ukrainian-born immigrant, has died. Her new home's gigantic, abandoned garden, choked with weeds and crumbling antique structures, resembles a wild jungle—and it stirs cherished memories of Alex's childhood: When her home life became unbearable, she would escape to the forest. In her new home, Alex can feel the power of the majestic trees that nurtured her in her youth, but as she begins to beat back the bushes to unveil the garden's mysteries, her mother has a stroke and develops dementia. When Alex discovers an envelope of yellowed documents while sorting through her father's junk pile, offering clues to her parents'mysterious past, she reluctantly musters the courage to uncover their secrets. While discovering the plants hidden in the garden—from primroses and maple syrup–producing sugar maples to her mother's favorite, lily of the valley—she must come to terms with the circle of life around her, and find the courage to tend to her own family's future. “The land is rife with unexpected delights: a huge, decaying pagoda, underground aquifers, a pond, koi, deer, and all manner of vegetation.... As she restores the property and heals her long-troubled soul, Risen paints a vivid and exquisite portrait of nature and its profound significance.” —Publishers Weekly
