Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are nanomaterials with interesting photoluminescent properties that can be endowed with biomolecular recognition and biocompatibility when stabilized with proteins. The interplay between the optical features of AuNCs and the function added by the protein makes them perfect candidates for generating hybrid protein‐inorganic nanomaterials. Focusing on protein stabilized‐AuNCs, hitherto most of the work has covered the use of natural proteins for in situ growth of AuNCs. However, the exploitation of design proteins for such endeavors enables fine‐tuning of the photoluminescent assets of AuNCs. In this work, rational protein engineering of modular protein scaffolds is applied for capping of non‐emissive, non‐passivated naked AuNCs, resulting in a fast and easy method for the synthesis of customizable and emissive protein‐AuNC nanomaterials. Tuning of the photoluminescent properties of the final hybrid module is obtained by appropriate choice of the coordination residues grafted on the same protein scaffold. The effects of ligands and coordination bonds are studied using time‐resolved photoluminescence and X‐ray absorbance spectroscopies, shedding light on the mechanisms behind the emerging properties of these hybrid materials. Moreover, the described versatile strategy opens new avenues for the synthesis of on‐demand photoluminescent hybrids for a wide spectrum of optical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanisms of plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxial growth of GaN on muscovite mica were investigated. Using a battery of techniques, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, cathodoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, it was possible to establish that, in spite of the lattice symmetry mismatch, GaN grows in epitaxial relationship with mica, with the [11–20] GaN direction parallel to [010] direction of mica. GaN layers could be easily detached from the substrate via the delamination of the upper layers of the mica itself, discarding the hypothesis of a van der Waals growth mode. Mixture of wurtzite (hexagonal) and zinc blende (ZB) (cubic) crystallographic phases was found in the GaN layers with ratios highly dependent on the growth conditions. Interestingly, almost pure ZB GaN epitaxial layers could be obtained at high growth temperature, suggesting the existence of a specific GaN nucleation mechanism on mica and opening a new way to the growth of the thermodynamically less stable ZB GaN phase. Highly emissive Ag 2 S nanocrystals (NCs) passivated with a gradated shell incorporating Se and Zn were synthesized in air, and the temperature dependence of their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) was quantified in both organic and aqueous media at ∼1200 nm. The relevance of this parameter, measured at physiological temperatures, is highlighted for applications that rely on the near infrared (NIR) photoluminescence of NCs, such as deep NIR imaging or luminescence nanothermometry. Hyperspectral NIR imaging shows that Ag 2 S-based NCs with a PLQY in organic media of about 10% are inefficient for imaging at 40 °C through 20 mm thick tissue with low laser irradiation power densities. In contrast, water-transferred Ag 2 S-based NCs with an initial PLQY of 2% in water exhibit improved robustness against temperature changes, enabling improved imaging performance.
