We combine the deepest X-ray survey from the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) `7-Ms' survey with the deepest mid-infrared (5.6$ \mu m$) image from the JWST/MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) to study the infrared counterparts and point-source emission of 31 X-ray sources with a median, intrinsic, rest-frame X-ray luminosity of $\log_{10}(L_{\rm Xc}^{\rm 0.5-7keV})$=42.04$\pm$0.22 erg $\rm s^{-1}$. The sample includes 24 AGN with a redshift range, as set by the X-ray detectability, of $z \simeq 0.5-3$. Through a multi-wavelength morphological decomposition, employing three separate classifications (visual, parametric and non-parametric) we separate (where present) the luminosity of the point-like AGN component from the remainder of the host-galaxy emission. The unprecedented mid-infrared sensitivity and imaging resolution of MIRI allows, in many cases, the direct characterisation of point-like (i.e. unresolved) components in the galaxies' emission. We establish a broad agreement between the three morphological classifications. At least 70% of the X-ray sources, including some classified as galaxies, show unresolved emission in the MIRI images, with the unresolved-to-total flux fraction at rest-frame 2$\mu m$ ranging from $\sim$0.2 to $\sim$0.9. At high X-ray luminosities ($\log_{10}(L_{\rm Xc}$)>43 erg $\rm s^{-1}$) we derive a consistent rest-frame near-infrared 2$ \mu m$ point-source luminosity to that derived for local AGN, whilst at lower X-ray luminosity we identify an excess in the 2$ \mu m$ emission compared to pre-JWST studies. We speculate this offset may be driven by a combination of Compton-thick AGN components and nuclear starburst, merger driven activity. Our observations highlight the complex nature of X-ray sources in the distant Universe and demonstrate the power of JWST/MIRI in quantifying their nuclear infrared emission. The recently launched James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is opening new observing windows on the distant universe. Among JWST's instruments, the Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI) offers the unique capability of imaging observations at wavelengths $\lambda > 5\mu$m. This enables unique access to the rest frame near infra-red (NIR, $\lambda \ge 1$\mum) emission from galaxies at redshifts $z>4$ and the visual ($\lambda \gtrsim 5000$\AA) rest frame for $z>9$. We here report on the guaranteed time observations (GTO) from the MIRI European Consortium, of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), forming the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS), consisting of an on source integration time of $\sim41$ hours in the MIRI/F560W (5.6 $\mu$m) filter. To our knowledge, this constitutes the longest single filter exposure obtained with JWST of an extragalactic field as yet., Comment: submitted to A&A on July 30, 2024

We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at $S/N\sim6$, with $\mathrm{F1000W}\sim27$ mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, JADES, fainter than the 30.0-30.5 mag $5\sigma$ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultra-deep data ($\sim$29 mag, $5\sigma$). Analyzing the spectral energy distribution built with low-$S/N$ ($<5$) measurements in individual optical-to-mid-infrared filters and higher $S/N$ ($\gtrsim5$) in stacked NIRCam data, we discuss the possible nature of this red NIRCam-dark source using a battery of codes. We discard the possibility of Cerberus being a Solar System body based on the $<0.016$" proper motion in the 1-year apart JADES and MIDIS observations. A sub-stellar Galactic nature is deemed unlikely, given that the Cerberus' relatively flat NIRCam-to-NIRCam and very red NIRCam-to-MIRI flux ratios are not consistent with any brown dwarf model. The extragalactic nature of Cerberus offers 3 possibilities: (1) A $z\sim0.4$ galaxy with strong emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; the very low inferred stellar mass, $\mathrm{M}_\star=10^{5-6}$ M$_\odot$, makes this possibility highly improbable. (2) A dusty galaxy at $z\sim4$ with an inferred stellar mass $\mathrm{M}_\star\sim10^{8}$ M$_\odot$. (3) A galaxy with observational properties similar to those of the reddest little red dots discovered around $z\sim7$, but Cerberus lying at $z\sim15$, with the rest-frame optical dominated by emission from a dusty torus or a dusty starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, results unchanged, manuscript shortened to publish as a letter

We present a JWST/MRS spectrum of the quasar J1120+0641 at z=7.0848, the first spectroscopic observation of a reionisation-era quasar in the rest-frame infrared ($0.6<\lambda<3.4\mu$m). In the context of the mysterious fast assembly of the first supermassive black holes at z>7, our observations enable for the first time the detection of hot torus dust, the H$\alpha$ emission line, and the Paschen-series broad emission lines in a quasar at z>7. Hot torus dust is clearly detected as an upturn in the continuum emission at $\lambda_{\text{rest}}\simeq1.3\mu$m, leading to a black-body temperature of $T=1413.5^{+5.7}_{-7.4}$K. Compared to similarly-luminous quasars at 06 ($2\sigma$ significance). We measure the black hole mass of J1120+0641 based on the H$\alpha$ Balmer line, $M_{\text{BH}}=1.52\pm0.17\cdot 10^9 M_\odot$, which is in good agreement with the previous rest-UV MgII black hole mass measurement. The black hole mass based on the Paschen-series lines is also consistent, indicating no significant extinction in the rest-frame UV measurement. The broad H$\alpha$, Pa-$\alpha$ and Pa-$\beta$ emission lines are consistent with an origin in a common broad-line region (BLR) with density log$N_H/\text{cm}^{-3}\geq 12$, ionisation parameter $-7<$log$U<-4$, and extinction E(B-V)$\lesssim 0.1$mag. We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at $88$ galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at $z>8$, good fits based on $\chi^2$ calculations, and predominant solutions compared to $z<8$ alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from $z\sim13$ to $z\sim8$, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of $\sim$0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values $\alpha=-2.2\pm0.1$ and $M^*=-20.8\pm0.2$ mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses $\sim10^8$ M$_\odot$ during the first 350 Myr of the Universe, $z\sim12$, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations $\sim$150 Myr later, by $z\sim9$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, in memoriam Hans Ulrik Noorgaard-Nielsen and Olivier Le F\`evre

The Galactic Center contains some of the most extreme conditions for star formation in our Galaxy as well as many other phenomena that are unique to this region. Given our relative proximity to the Galactic Center, we are able to study details of physical processes to a level that is simply not yet possible for more distant galaxies, yielding an otherwise inaccessible view of the nuclear region of a galaxy. We recently carried out a targeted imaging survey of mid-infrared bright portions of the Galactic Center at 25 and 37 $\mu$m using the FORCAST instrument on SOFIA. This survey was one of the inaugural Legacy Programs from SOFIA cycle 7, observing a total area of 403 arcmin$^2$ (2180 pc$^2$), including the Sgr A, B, and C complexes. Here we present an overview of the survey strategy, observations, and data reduction as an accompaniment to the initial public release of the survey data. We discuss interesting regions and features within the data including extended features near the circumnuclear disk, structures in the Arched Filaments and Sickle H II regions, and signs of embedded star formation in Sgr B2 and Sgr C. We also feature a handful of less well studied mid-infrared sources located between Sgr A and Sgr C that could be sites of relatively isolated star formation activity. We report serendipitous detections of line emission with ALMA in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec of the Galactic center at an up to now highest resolution (<0.7''). Among the highlights are the very first and highly resolved images of sub-mm molecular emission of CS, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, and CH3OH in the immediate vicinity (~1'' in projection) of Sgr A* and in the circumnuclear disk (CND). The central association (CA) of molecular clouds shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) luminosity ratios than the CND suggesting a combination of higher excitation - by a temperature gradient and/or IR-pumping - and abundance enhancement due to UV- and/or X-ray emission. We conclude that the CA is closer to the center than the CND is and could be an infalling clump consisting of denser cloud cores embedded in diffuse gas. Moreover, we identified further regions in and outside the CND that are ideally suited for future studies in the scope of hot/cold core and extreme PDR/XDR chemistry and consequent star formation in the central few parsecs.

We present a pilot study of ~ 3" resolution observations of low CO transitions with the Submillimeter Array in three nearby Seyfert galaxies, which are part of the low-luminosity quasi-stellar object (LLQSOs) sample consisting of 99 nearby (z = 0.06) type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) taken from the Hamburg/ESO quasi-stellar object (QSO) survey. Two sources were observed in 12CO(2-1) and 13CO(2-1) and the third in 12CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3). None of the sources is detected in continuum emission. More than 80% of the 12CO detected molecular gas is concentrated within a diameter (FWHM) < 1.8 kpc. 13CO is tentatively detected, while HCO+ emission could not be detected. All three objects show indications of a kinematically decoupled central unresolved molecular gas component. The molecular gas masses of the three galaxies are in the range M_mol = (0.7 - 8.7) x 10^9 M_sun. We give lower limits for the dynamical masses of M_dyn > 1.5 x 10^9 M_sun and for the dust masses of M_dust > 1.6 x 10^6 M_sun. The R21 =12CO/13CO(2-1) line luminosity ratios show Galactic values of R21 ~ 5 - 7 in the outskirts and R21 > 20 in the central region, similar to starbursts and (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs; i.e. LIRGs and ULIRGs), implying higher temperatures and stronger turbulence. All three sources show indications of 12CO(2-1)/12CO(1-0) ratios of ~ 0.5, suggesting a cold or diffuse gas phase. Strikingly, the 12CO(3-2)/(1-0) ratio of ~ 1 also indicates a higher excited phase. Since these galaxies have high infrared luminosities of L_IR > 10^11 L_sun and seem to contain a circumnuclear starburst with minimum surface densities of gas and star formation rate (SFR) around {\Sigma}_mol = 50 - 550 M_sun pc^-2 and {\Sigma}_SFR = 1.1 - 3.1 M_sun kpc^-2 yr^-1, we conclude that the interstellar medium in the centers of these LIRG Seyferts is strongly affected by violent star formation and better ..., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables

The compact and, with 4.3+-0.3 million solar masses, very massive object located at the center of the Milky Way is currently the very best candidate for a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in our immediate vicinity. The strongest evidence for this is provided by measurements of stellar orbits, variable X-ray emission, and strongly variable polarized near-infrared emission from the location of the radio source Sagittarius~A* (SgrA*) in the middle of the central stellar cluster. If SgrA* is indeed a SMBH it will, in projection onto the sky, have the largest event horizon and will certainly be the first and most important target of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations currently being prepared. These observations in combination with the infrared interferometry experiment GRAVITY at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and other experiments across the electromagnetic spectrum might yield proof for the presence of a black hole at the center of the Milky Way. It is, however, unclear when the ever mounting evidence for SgrA* being associated with a SMBH will suffice as a convincing proof. Additional compelling evidence may come from future gravitational wave observatories. This manuscript reviews the observational facts, theoretical grounds and conceptual aspects for the case of SgrA* being a black hole. We treat theory and observations in the framework of the philosophical discussions about "(Anti)Realism and Underdetermination", as this line of arguments allows us to describe the situation in observational astrophysics with respect to supermassive black holes. Questions concerning the existence of supermassive black holes and in particular SgrA* are discussed using causation as an indispensable element. We report serendipitous detections of line emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec down to within 1" around Sgr A* at an up to now highest resolution (<0.5") view of the Galactic Center (GC) in the sub-millimeter (sub-mm) domain. From the 100 GHz continuum and the H39\alpha emission we obtain a uniform electron temperature around 6000 K for the minispiral. The spectral index of Sgr A* is ~ 0.5 at 100 - 250 GHz and ~ 0.0 at 230 - 340 GHz. The bright sources in the center show spectral indices around -0.1 implying Bremsstrahlung emission, while dust emission is emerging in the minispiral exterior. Apart from CS, which is most widespread in the center, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, CH3OH, 13CS and N2H+ are also detected. The bulk of the clumpy emission regions is at positive velocities and in a region confined by the minispiral northern arm, bar and the sources IRS 3 and 7. Although partly spatially overlapping with the radio recombination line (RRL) emission at same negative velocities, the relation to the minispiral remains unclear. A likely explanation is an infalling clump consisting of denser cloud cores embedded in diffuse gas. The central association of clouds (CA) shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) ratios than the circumnuclear disk (CND) suggesting a combination of higher excitation, by a temperature gradient and/or IR-pumping, and abundance enhancement due to UV- and/or X-ray emission. Hence, we conclude that this CA is closer to the center than the CND is to the center. We describe the operations concept and data reduction plan for the Mid- Infrared Instrument (MIRI) for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The overall JWST operations concept is to use Observation Templates (OTs) to provide a straightforward and intuitive way for users to specify observations. MIRI has four OTs that correspond to the four observing modes: 1.) Imaging, 2.) Coronagraphy, 3.) Low Resolution Spectroscopy, and 4.) Medium Resolution Spectroscopy. We outline the user choices and expansion of these choices into detailed instrument operations. The data reduction plans for MIRI are split into three stages, where the specificity of the reduction steps to the observation type increases with stage. The reduction starts with integration ramps: stage 1 yields uncalibrated slope images; stage 2 calibrates the slope images; and then stage 3 combines multiple calibrated slope images into high level data products (e.g. mosaics, spectral cubes, and extracted source information). Finally, we give examples of the data and data products that will be derived from each of the four different OTs.

We present an estimate of the performance that will be achieved during on orbit operations of the JWST Mid Infrared Instrument, MIRI. The efficiency of the main imager and spectrometer systems in detecting photons from an astronomical target are presented, based on measurements at sub-system and instrument level testing, with the end-to-end transmission budget discussed in some detail. The brightest target fluxes that can be measured without saturating the detectors are provided. The sensitivity for long duration observations of faint sources is presented in terms of the target flux required to achieve a signal to noise ratio of 10 after a 10,000 second observation. The algorithms used in the sensitivity model are presented, including the understanding gained during testing of the MIRI Flight Model and flight-like detectors.

The MIRI Si:As IBC detector arrays extend the heritage technology from the Spitzer IRAC arrays to a 1024 x 1024 pixel format. We provide a short discussion of the principles of operation, design, and performance of the individual MIRI detectors, in support of a description of their operation in arrays provided in an accompanying paper (Ressler et al. (2015)). We then describe modeling of their response. We find that electron diffusion is an important component of their performance, although it was omitted in previous models. Our new model will let us optimize the bias voltage while avoiding avalanche gain. It also predicts the fraction of the IR-active layer that is depleted (and thus contributes to the quantum efficiency) as signal is accumulated on the array amplifier. Another set of models accurately predicts the nonlinearity of the detector-amplifier unit and has guided determination of the corrections for nonlinearity. Finally, we discuss how diffraction at the interpixel gaps and total internal reflection can produce the extended cross-like artifacts around images with these arrays at short wavelengths, ~ 5 microns. The modeling of the behavior of these devices is helping optimize how we operate them and also providing inputs to the development of the data pipeline.

The Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides measurements over the wavelength range 5 to 28.5 microns. MIRI has, within a single 'package', four key scientific functions: photometric imaging, coronagraphy, single-source low-spectral resolving power (R ~ 100) spectroscopy, and medium-resolving power (R ~ 1500 to 3500) integral field spectroscopy. An associated cooler system maintains MIRI at its operating temperature of < 6.7 K. This paper describes the driving principles behind the design of MIRI, the primary design parameters, and their realization in terms of the 'as-built' instrument. It also describes the test program that led to delivery of the tested and calibrated Flight Model to NASA in 2012, and the confirmation after delivery of the key interface requirements.

We present the results of near-infrared (NIR) H- and K-band European Southern Observatory SINFONI integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1433. We present emission and absorption line measurements in the central kpc of NGC 1433. We detect a narrow Balmer line and several H2 lines. We find that the stellar continuum peaks in the optical and NIR in the same position, indicating that there is no covering of the center by a nuclear dust lane. A strong velocity gradient is detected in all emission lines at that position. The position angle of this gradient is at 155\deg whereas the galactic rotation is at a position angle of 201\deg. Our measures of the molecular hydrogen lines, hydrogen recombination lines, and [Feii] indicate that the excitation at the nucleus is caused by thermal excitation, i.e. shocks which can be associated with active galactic nuclei emission, supernovae or outflows. The line ratios [Feii]/Pa{\beta} and H2/Br{\gamma} show a Seyfert to LINER identification of the nucleus. The stellar continuum is dominated by spectral signatures of red-giant M stars. The stellar line-of-sight velocity follows the galactic field whereas the light continuum follows the nuclear bar. The dynamical center of NGC 1433 coincides with the optical and NIR center of the galaxy and the black hole position. Within the central arcsecond, the molecular hydrogen and the 12CO(3-2) emissions - observed in the NIR and in the sub-millimeter with SINFONI and ALMA, respectively - are indicative for a nuclear outflow originating from the galaxy's SMBH. A small circum nuclear disk cannot be fully excluded. Derived gravitational torques show that the nuclear bar is able to drive gas inwards to scales where viscosity torques and dynamical friction become important. The cross-correlation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 with the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters survey allows for a multiwavelength statistical study of radio-optical galaxy properties on a very large number of sources. The correlation we find between $L_{[20 cm]}/L_{[H\alpha]}$ and optical emission line ratios suggests that the origin of the emission in powerful radio-galaxies is of nuclear rather than of stellar origin. In particular, the spectroscopic classification in Seyferts, Low Ionization Narrow Emission Regions (LINERs) and star-forming galaxies provided by emission-line diagnostic diagrams peaks on the AGN region for higher $L_{[20 cm]}/L_{[H\alpha]}$ values. The trend differs from Seyferts to LINERs. The [NII]/H$\alpha$ vs. equivalent width of the H$\alpha$ line diagram confirms the LINER classification for most of those that have been identified with the traditional diagnostic diagrams. Sagittarius A*, the super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, is surrounded by a small cluster of high velocity stars, known as the S-stars. We aim to constrain the amount and nature of stellar and dark mass associated with the cluster in the immediate vicinity of Sagittarius A*. We use near-infrared imaging to determine the $K_\mathrm{s}$-band luminosity function of the S-star cluster members, and the distribution of the diffuse background emission and the stellar number density counts around the central black hole. This allows us to determine the stellar light and mass contribution expected from the faint members of the cluster. We then use post-Newtonian N-body techniques to investigate the effect of stellar perturbations on the motion of S2, as a means of detecting the number and masses of the perturbers. We find that the stellar mass derived from the $K_\mathrm{s}$-band luminosity extrapolation is much smaller than the amount of mass that might be present considering the uncertainties in the orbital motion of the star S2. Also the amount of light from the fainter S-cluster members is below the amount of residual light at the position of the S-star cluster after removing the bright cluster members. If the distribution of stars and stellar remnants is strongly enough peaked near Sagittarius A*, observed changes in the orbital elements of S2 can be used to constrain both their masses and numbers. Based on simulations of the cluster of high velocity stars we find that at a wavelength of 2.2 $\mu$m close to the confusion level for 8 m class telescopes blend stars will occur (preferentially near the position of Sagittarius A*) that last for typically 3 years before they dissolve due to proper motions., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, minor changes to match the published version in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The general properties of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) in the local universe are well known since large samples of these objects have been the subject of numerous spectroscopic works. There are, however, relatively few studies of large samples of LIRGs and ULIRGs using integral field spectroscopy (IFS). We analyze optical (3800-7200A) IFS data taken with the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) of the central few kiloparsecs of 11 LIRGs. To study the stellar populations we fit the optical stellar continuum and the hydrogen recombination lines of selected regions. We analyze the excitation conditions of the gas using the spatially resolved properties of the brightest optical emission lines. The optical continua of the selected regions are well fitted with a combination of evolved (~0.7-10Gyr) and ionizing (1-20Myr) stellar populations. The latter is more obscured than the evolved population, and has visual extinctions in good agreement with those obtained from the Balmer decrement. Except for NGC 7771, there is no clear evidence for an important contribution to the optical light from an intermediate-aged population (~100-500Myr). Even after correcting for the presence of stellar absorption, a large fraction of spaxels with low observed equivalent widths of Halpha in emission still show enhanced [NII]/Halpha and [SII]/Halpha ratios. These ratios are likely to be produced by a combination of photoionization in HII regions and diffuse emission. These regions of enhanced ratios are generally coincident with low surface brightness HII regions and diffuse emission detected in the Halpha and Pa-alpha images. Using the PMAS line ratios and the NICMOS Pa-alpha photometry of HII regions we find that the fraction of diffuse emission in LIRGs varies from galaxy to galaxy, and it is generally less than 60% as found in other starburst galaxies. LIRGs are an important class of objects in the low-z universe bridging the gap between normal spirals and the strongly interacting and starbursting ULIRGs. Studies of their 2D physical properties are still lacking. We aim to understand the nature and origin of the ionization mechanisms operating in the extranuclear regions of LIRGs as a function of the interaction phase and L_IR by using IFS data obtained with VIMOS. Our analysis is based on over 25300 spectra of 32 LIRGs covering all types of morphologies and the entire 10^11-10^12 L_sun range. We found strong evidence for shock ionization, with a clear trend with the dynamical status of the system. Specifically, we quantified the variation with interaction phase of several line ratios indicative of the excitation degree. While the [NII]/Ha ratio does not show any significant change, the [SII]/Ha and [OI]/Ha ratios are higher for more advanced interaction stages. We constrained the main mechanisms causing the ionization in the extra-nuclear regions using diagnostic diagrams. Isolated systems are mainly consistent with ionization caused by young stars. Large fractions of the extra-nuclear regions in interacting pairs and more advanced mergers are consistent with ionization caused by shocks. This is supported by the relation between the excitation degree and the velocity dispersion of the ionized gas, which we interpret as evidence for shock ionization in interacting galaxies and advanced mergers but not in isolated galaxies. This relation does not show any dependence with L_IR. All this indicates that tidal forces play a key role in the origin of the ionizing shocks in the extra-nuclear regions. We also showed what appears to be a common [OI]/Ha-sigma relation for the extranuclear ionized gas in interacting (U)LIRGs. In this paper we present PMAS optical (3800-7200A) IFS of the northern hemisphere portion of a volume-limited sample of 11 LIRGs. The PMAS observations typically cover the central ~5kpc and are complemented with HST/NICMOS images. For most LIRGs in our sample, the peaks of the continuum and gas (e.g., Halpha, [NII]) emissions coincide, unlike what is observed in local, strongly interacting ULIRGs. The only exceptions are galaxies with circumnuclear rings of star formation where the most luminous Halpha emitting regions are found in the rings rather than in the nuclei, and the displacements are well understood in terms of differences in the stellar populations. A large fraction of the nuclei of these LIRGs are classified as LINER and intermediate LINER/HII, or composite objects. The excitation conditions of the integrated emission depend on the relative contributions of HII regions and the diffuse emission to the line emission over the PMAS FoV. Galaxies dominated by high surface-brightness HII regions show integrated HII-like excitation. A few galaxies show slightly larger integrated [NII]/Halpha and [SII]/Halpha line ratios than the nuclear ones, probably because of more contribution from the diffuse emission. The Halpha velocity fields over the central few kpc are generally consistent, at least to first order, with rotational motions. The velocity fields of most LIRGs are similar to those of disk galaxies, in contrast to the highly perturbed fields of most local, strongly interacting ULIRGs. The peak of the Halpha velocity dispersion coincides with the position of the nucleus and is likely to be tracing mass. All these results are similar to the properties of z~1 LIRGs, and they highlight the importance of detailed studies of flux-limited samples of local LIRGs. We present Spitzer/IRS spectral mapping observations of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) Arp299 (IC694 + NGC3690) covering the central 45arcsec ~ 9kpc. The integrated mid-IR spectrum of Arp299 is similar to that of local starbursts despite its strongly interacting nature and high infrared luminosity, L_IR ~ 6x10^11 Lsun. This is explained because the star formation (probed by e.g. high [NeIII]15.56micron/[NeII]micron line ratios) is spread across at least 6-8kpc. Moreover, a large fraction of this star formation is taking place in young regions of moderate mid-IR optical depths such as the C+C' complex in the overlap region between the two galaxies and in HII regions in the disks of the galaxies. It is only source A, the nuclear region of IC694, that shows the typical mid-IR characteristics of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, L_IR > 10^12 Lsun), that is, very compact (less than 1kpc) and dust-enshrouded star formation resulting in a deep silicate feature and moderate equivalent widths of the PAHs. The nuclear region of NGC3690, known as source B1, hosts a low-luminosity AGN and is surrounded by regions of star formation. Although the high excitation [NeV]14.32micron line typical of AGN is not detected in B1, its upper limit is consistent with the value expected from the X-ray luminosity. The AGN emission is detected in the form of a strong hot dust component that accounts for 80-90% of the 6micron luminosity of B1. The similarity between the Arp299 integrated mid-IR spectrum and those of high-z ULIRGs suggests that Arp299 may represent a local example, albeit with lower IR luminosity and possibly higher metallicity, of the star-formation processes occurring at high-z., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

(Ultra)Luminous Infrared Galaxies [(U)LIRGs] are much more numerous at cosmological distances than locally, and are likely precursors of elliptical galaxies. Our goal is to carry out an integral field spectroscopic survey of a representative sample of low redshift (z < 0.26) (U)LIRGs, covering different morphologies from spirals to mergers over the entire infrared luminosity range. The present study is based on optical IFS obtained with the VIMOS instrument on the VLT. The first results of this survey are presented here with the study of two galaxies representative of the two major morphological types observed in (U)LIRGs, interacting pairs and morphologically- regular, weakly-interacting spirals, respectively. We have found that IRAS 06076-2139 consists of two low-intermediate mass (0.15 and 0.4 m*) galaxies with relative velocities of ~ 550 km/s and, therefore, it is unlikely that they will merge. The VIMOS IFS has also discovered the presence of a rapidly expanding and rotating ring of gas in the southern galaxy (Gs), likely due to a nearly central head-on passage of an intruder about 140 million years ago. IRASF 12115-4656 is a spiral for which we have found a mass of 1.2 m*. The neutral gas (traced by the NaI doublet) and ionized gas components are spatially and kinematically decoupled. The analysis presented here illustrates the full potential of IFS in two important aspects: (i) the study of the kinematics and ionization structure of complex interacting/merging systems, and (2i) the study of the kinematics of the different gas phases, neutral (cool) and ionized (warm), traced by the NaD and Halpha lines, respectively. MIRI, the Mid-InfraRed Instrument, is one of four instruments being built for the James Webb Space Telescope, and is developed jointly between an EuropeanConsortium and the US. In this paper we present a software data simulator for one of MIRI's four instruments: the Integral Field Unit (IFU) Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS), the first mid-infrared IFU spectrograph, and one of the first IFUs to be used in a space mission. To give the MIRI community a preview of the properties of the MIRI-MRS data products before the telescope is operational, the Specsim tool has been developed to model, in software, the operation of the spectrometer. Specsim generates synthetic data frames approximating those which will be taken by the instrument in orbit. The program models astronomical sources and generates detector frames using the predicted and measured optical properties of the telescope and MIRI. These frames can then be used to illustrate and inform a range of operational activities, including data calibration strategies and the development and testing of the data reduction software for the MIRI-MRS. The luminous infrared galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) is studied using optical integral field spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images. The stellar and ionized gas morphology shows lambda-dependent variations due to the combined effects of the dust internal extinction, and the nature and spatial distribution of the different ionizing sources. The two-dimensional ionization maps have revealed an off-nuclear conical structure of about 4 kpc in length, characterized by high excitation conditions and a radial gradient in the gas electron density. The apex of this structure coincides with B1 region of NGC3690 which, in turn, presents Seyfert-like ionization, high extinction and a high velocity dispersion. These results strongly support the hypothesis that B1 is the true nucleus of NGC3690, where an AGN is located. In the circumnuclear regions HII-like ionization dominates, while LINER-like ionization is found elsewhere. The Halpha emitting sources with ages from 3.3 to 7.2x10^6 years, have masses of between 6 and 680x10^6 Msun and contribute (extinction corrected) about 45% to the bolometric luminosity. The ionized (Halpha) and neutral (NaD) gas velocity fields show similar structure on scales of several hundred to about 1 kpc, indicating that these gas components are kinematically coupled. The kinematic structure is complex and on scales of about 0.2 kpc does not appear to be dominated by the presence of ordered, rotational motions. The large velocity dispersion measured in NGC3690 indicates that this galaxy is the most massive of the system. We present BV photometry centered on the globular cluster M54 (NGC 6715). The color-magnitude diagram clearly shows a blue horizontal branch extending anomalously beyond the zero age horizontal branch theoretical models. These kinds of horizontal branch stars (also called ``blue hook'' stars), which go beyond the lower limit of the envelope mass of canonical horizontal branch hot stars, have so far been known to exist in only a few globular clusters: NGC 2808, Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), NGC 6273, and NGC 6388. Those clusters, like M54, are among the most luminous in our Galaxy, indicating a possible correlation between the existence of these types of horizontal branch stars and the total mass of the cluster. A gap in the observed horizontal branch of M54 around T(eff)= 27000 K could be interpreted within the late helium flash theoretical scenario, a possible explanation for the origin of those stars., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal
