Abstract

A combination of theoretical modelling and experiments reveals the origin of the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) that appears in nanometer-thick epitaxial Co films intercalated between graphene (Gr) and a heavy metal (HM) substrate, as a function of the Co thickness. High quality epitaxial Gr/Co\n/HM(111) (HM=Pt,Ir) heterostructures are grown by intercalation below graphene, which acts as a surfactant that kinetically stabilizes the pseudomorphic growth of highly perfect Co face-centered tetragonal ($fct$) films, with a reduced number of stacking faults as the only structural defect observable by high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM). Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements show that such heterostructures present PMA up to large Co critical thicknesses of about 4~nm (20~ML) and 2~nm (10~ML) for Pt and Ir substrates, respectively, while X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements show an inverse power law of the anistropy of the orbital moment with Co thickness, reflecting its interfacial nature, that changes sign at about the same critical values. First principles calculations show that, regardless of the presence of graphene, ideal Co $fct$ films on HM buffers do not sustain PMAs beyond around 6~MLs due to the in-plane contribution of the inner bulk-like Co layers. The large experimental critical thicknesses sustaining PMA can only be retrieved by the inclusion of structural defects that promote a local $hcp$ stacking such as twin boundaries or stacking faults. Production of sufficient numbers of multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells is a great challenge that the industry must address to meet the increasing demand for clinical size product batches. This can be understood as an opportunity to exploit existing bioprocessing technologies already tested successfully in the production of vaccines and biologicals. Herein we analyse the transition from traditional manual cell expansion 2D methodologies to scalable and automated platforms with the capacity to yield billions of cells per batch in a robust, reproducible and cost-effective manner in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices. 34. HTT gene intermediate alleles in neurodegeneration: evidence for association with Alzheimer's disease

Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the expansion of CAG repeats in the HTT gene. Intermediate alleles (IAs) are in the range of 27-35 repeats and have been associated to a normal phenotype. The aim of this work was to analyze the association between intermediate huntingtin CAG-repeat alleles (IAs) and neurodegenerative diseases, other than HD. We screened the HTT CAG repeats in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) (n = 1126), Parkinson's disease (PD) (n = 610), and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) (n = 225). We also studied 509 healthy controls (HCs). The relative frequency of IAs for each group was 6.03% in AD, 5.3% in FTLD, 3.5% in PD, and 2.9% in HCs. The frequency of IA was significantly higher among patients with AD when compared to HCs (p = 0.011, OR = 2.11, 95% CI = 1.19-3.74); no significant difference was observed in FTLD (p = 0.17; OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 0.85-4.03) and PD (p = 0.69; OR = 1.21; 95% CI (0.61-2.37) versus HCs. No atypical symptoms or clinical features distinctive of HD were found among carriers of IAs. We found 3 cases with CAG expansions within the pathological range, one diagnosed with AD, one with PD, and one with FTD. Results suggest that IAs might have a role in the pathogenesis of AD. In addition, HD patients might be misdiagnosed with other neurodegenerative diseases, particularly when CAG repeats are in the lower pathological range. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Abstract

Local people in South-east Asia are often cited as skilled forest managers. It is barely acknowledged that an essential part of this forest management does not concern natural forests, but forests that have been planted, often after the removal of pre-existing natural forests; forests that are cultivated not by professional foresters, but by sedentary or swidden farmers, on their farmlands; forests that are based not on exotic, fast-growing trees, but on local tree species, and harbour an incredible variety of plant and animal species. This book concentrates on forest cultivation by smallholder farmers in South-east Asia, not only because it constitutes altogether the most original and lesser known aspect of local forest management in the region, but also because, it represents the most promising field for the design of alternative strategies for the management of forest resources and forest lands. Natural forests are still present and actively managed in the region. So, why do people cut natural forests to replant the same species of forest trees they have just chopped down? Why have professional foresters, or the decision-makers in forest management, never seriously considered these examples of indigenous forest culture, however sustainable and profitable they may be? Many elements of the answer to these questions are given in this book, which is built on the conclusions of 10 years of multidisciplinary research and analysis on these systems. It shows how forest culture by farmers constitutes a strategy that questions the practical, conceptual and legal aspects of conventional forest management. It speaks for more scientific and political support to these systems, because they are altogether neglected, endangered and full of potential. Further it explains a why it is important to consider these examples as interesting alternative models to either forest extraction or specialized forest plantations, especially in the present context of depletion of natural forests all over the planet. Abstract

First-principles calculationsare performed to characterize the NO adsorption on large carbonaceousclusters modeling the surface of soot. Adsorption on the face andon the edges of perfect and defective clusters is considered in thecalculations. It is shown that the first situation corresponds tophysisorption and requires taking into account long-range dispersioninteractions in the calculations. In contrast, interaction of NO withthe unsaturated edge of a defective cluster leads preferentially toa C–N rather than to a C–O chemical binding. This indicatesthat soot may be an efficient sink for NO in the troposphere onlyif it contains a high number of unsaturated carbon atoms. Abstract

Cracking due to desiccation can compromise the behaviour of earth structures built with compacted clayey soils by promoting water access and consequent volume changes on further wetting. Tensile strength therefore is important to be considered when studying the behaviour of such structures, and in particular its dependence on the degree of saturation or water content. The influence of water content in tensile behaviour of compacted marls was investigated by performing diametral compression tests (Brazilian splitting tests), where axial deformations were measured besides strength. The samples were prepared by compaction at optimum point using standard compaction energy (optimum water content 16%) and then dried by vapour equilibrium to reach water contents between 5% and 16%. The correspondence between water content and suction was done by using the drying branch of the water retention curve, measured using WP4 equipment (Water Dewpoint Potentiometer). Good relationships were found between tensile strength and the water content (and suction). In addition, the study was completed with the analysis of other parameters such as the semi-contact angle created in the loaded area and the stiffness of the material, which also showed changes with water content. more...
