This study was the winner of "Best Student Poster Presentation" of the 19th Conference of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) International Abstract: Currently, a large-scale restoration project aims to restore around 15 million hectares of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. This will increase forest cover and connectivity among remnant sites as well as restore environmental services. Currently, studies on recovery of fauna in restored areas of the Atlantic Forest are practically nonexistent. To address this knowledge vacuum, our study compares diversity patterns of fruit-feeding butterflies in three forest areas with different restoration ages (11, 22, and 54 years), and uses a native forest area as reference. Results showed butterfly communities in maturing restored areas becoming more similar to the ones found in the native forest, with an increase in the proportional abundance of forest species, and a decrease of edge and grassland species. Moreover, we found a higher diversity among sites at the intermediate restoration age, with a community composed of both grassland and forest species. Butterfly species composition differed significantly among sites, showing interesting patterns of potential species replacement over time. Our results indicate that, although restored sites were located in a fragmented landscape, they provide suitable habitats for recolonization by fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Embrapa - Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária A conversão de habitats naturais em áreas degradadas apresenta grande ameaça para a biodiversidade. Esse processo torna práticas de restauração cada vez mais necessárias para auxiliarem os ecossistemas a chegarem a uma condição com maior complexidade funcional ao longo tempo. Métodos ativos como a semeadura direta são empregados visando acelerar o processo de restauração na recuperação estrutural da vegetação, reestruturação da fauna e processos ecológicos. Realizamos o estudo em áreas de pastagens, em uma zona de contato Savana/Florestal Estacional. Implantamos experimentos de semeadura dividida em três partes: à lanço, em linhas e controle. Subdividimos parcelas de semeadura em duas: composição parcial de espécies de adubo verde e composição completa com as mesmas espécies e adicionando mais espécies agrícolas. Parcelas controle foram preparadas mas não semeadas. Utilizamos quatro classes sucessionais com um total de 57 espécies semeadas. Avaliamos o efeito dos diferentes tipos de semeadura no sucesso de estabelecimento de espécies arbóreas nativas e na diminuição na gramínea exótica ao longo de três anos. Plantas da classe sucessional 1 ano cobriram de 33 a 89% do solo aos três meses e foram substituídas pela classe 2-4 anos, cobrindo de 41 a 95%. Aos 36 meses a classe 1 ano já não cobria, a cobertura da classe 2-4 anos diminuiu de 15 a 75%, a classe 5-10 anos cobria 38% e a classe >10 teve baixa cobertura devido ao crescimento lento das plantas. Houveram grandes variações no estabelecimento entre espécies e nas suas respostas aos tratamentos e tempos de amostragem. Gramíneas exóticas recolonizaram em todos os tratamentos e diminuíram a densidade de plântulas arbóreas. Por outro lado, a cobertura das classes iniciais resultou em maior densidade de plântulas arbóreas. Nosso melhor tratamento, lanço parcial, com a cobertura de árvores da classe 5-10 anos alcançando 30% e uma densidade de 20.000 plântulas/m2 da classe >10 anos aos 36 meses, consideramos que a restauração está sendo bem sucedida sem manutenção química ou mecânica. Essas áreas já formam manchas de capoeira densas e estratificadas, aumentando a estrutura vegetacional inicial, podendo desencadear e favorecer a reestruturação da fauna e o retorno de processos ecológicos importantes para a dinâmica da comunidade. No segundo capítulo, comparamos a diversidade de formigas e taxas de remoção de sementes e herbivoria nas áreas de semeadura, com plantio de mudas de mesma idade e pastagens como controle. Encontramos diferenças na riqueza e na abundância relativa, refletindo na similaridade em termos de composição. Também vimos que a remoção de sementes foi maior nas áreas de semeadura, com incremento de 20% comparada ao plantio de mudas e de 31% comparada as pastagens. Taxas de herbivoria foram baixas e não diferenciaram entre as áreas, mas variaram entre espécies. Nossos resultados indicam que a maior estrutura vegetacional alcançada pelo método de semeadura direta pode ser eficaz para recuperar a diversidade de formigas, podendo modificar as redes de interações animal-planta, com resultados que podem ser favoráveis para a recuperação da comunidade ao longo da sucessão. The conversion of natural habitats into degraded areas poses a great threat to biodiversity. This process makes restoration practices increasingly necessary to help ecosystems reach a condition with greater functional complexity over time. Active methods such as direct seeding are used to accelerate the restoration process in structural vegetation recovery, fauna restructuring and ecological processes. We carried out the study in pasture areas, in a contact zone Savana/Forestry Seasonal. We implemented sowing experiments divided into three parts: broadcast, lines and control. We subdivided sowing plots into two: partial composition of green manure species and complete composition with the same species and adding more agricultural species. Control plots were prepared but not seeded. We used four successional classes with a total of 57 sown species. We evaluated the effect of different types of sowing on the successful establishment of native tree species and on the decrease in exotic grass over three years. Plants from the 1-year successional class covered 33 to 89% of the soil at three months and were replaced by the 2-4 year class, covering 41 to 95%. At 36 months the 1 year class no longer covered, the 2-4 year class coverage decreased from 15 to 75%, the 5-10 year class covered 38% and the >10 class had low cover due to slow plant growth. There were large variations in establishment between species and in their responses to treatments and sampling times. Exotic grasses recolonized but shared the cover with the sown species, which was greater in absolute terms. However, exotic grass decreased the density of tree seedlings. On the other hand, the coverage of the initial classes resulted in a higher density of tree seedlings. Our best treatment, partial-broadcast, with 5-10 year old tree cover reaching 30% and a density of 20.000 seedlings/m2 of class >10 years at 36 months, we consider the restoration to be successful without chemical maintenance or mechanics. These areas already form dense and stratified patches of capoeira, increasing the initial vegetation structure, which can trigger and favor the restructuring of the fauna and the return of ecological processes that are important for the community's dynamics. We compared ant diversity and seed and herbivory removal rates in sowing areas, with seedlings of the same age planted and pasture as control. We found differences in richness and relative abundance, reflecting similarity in terms of composition. We also saw that seed removal was higher in sowing areas, with an increase of 20% compared to planting seedlings and 31% compared to pastures. Herbivory rates were low and did not differentiate between areas, but varied between species. Our results indicate that the largest vegetation structure achieved by the direct seeding method can be effective in recovering ant diversity, modifying the animal-plant interaction networks, with results that can be favorable for community recovery throughout the succession.
