Abstract

This article is a case study of one Community-University Research and Action Partnership (CURAP) focused on soil lead, urban gardening, and environmental justice in Sacramento, California. We argue that creating and sustaining CURAPs requires a process of weaving together diverse strands of knowledge, resources, and lines of accountability that connect all parties involved. Like the physical process of weaving fabric, weaving CURAPs involve creative and collaborative uses and responses to tension between all elements of a partnership. This is especially true in long-term partnerships intended to address systemic environmental injustices. This case highlights the power relationships and challenges associated with such partnerships and presents several lessons to enrich the scholarship and practices of action research.

6. Problem Analysis: Challenging All Learners

Abstract

In this article, Garcia and Davis describe problem analysis as the process of examining a given mathematics exercise to find ways in which the problem can be modified and extended to create a richer learning opportunity for students. Students are often reluctant to attempt what they perceive to be higher-order thinking problems, but problem analysis helps bridge this gap. A teacher can analyze a problem, introduce scaffolding to assist students at the beginning, include intermediate steps to provide support throughout the problem, and provide extensions to challenge students to go further. In this way, students at all levels can feel challenged and experience success. By contemplating problems presented in their own classroom materials, teachers can use problem analysis to expand the learning opportunities offered by their district-adopted textbook and its ancillary materials. Procedural skill and conceptual understanding are both important in developing strong mathematics students. By implementing problem analysis, teachers are able to take skills-based problems from existing textbooks and create rich mathematical tasks. By exposing students to tasks using well-designed problem analysis, students are able to uncover and hone their abilities to reason and solve problems. A Bibliography is included.

Abstract

This portfolio was written for the Master of Second Language Teaching (MSLT) program. It reflects the author's beliefs on effective methods for teaching English as a second language (ESL) to adult learners. It includes the author's teaching philosophy, which focuses on communicative language teaching, creating an encouraging classroom environment, and providing meaningful instruction. The teaching philosophy is followed by four artifacts. First, the culture artifact is a review of complimenting behavior and how to teach pragmatics to language students. Second, the literacy artifact is a study of effective strategies for improving the writing skills of ESL learners. Third, the language artifact discusses wether listening or reading activities are better tools for teaching vocabulary. After the language artifact is an additional teacher artifact that explains the importance of teacher empathy. Finally, the annotated bibliographies provide an outline of the author's study and research throughout the MSLT program.

Abstract

Study abroad programs provide students, pursuing college degrees of all disciplines, a unique opportunity to experience cultures around the world. In teacher education programs specifically, giving students the chance to take classes, teach students, and observe cultures throughout the world can provide a first-hand knowledge in a world where cultural boundaries are being transcended in all countries. A study was conducted in survey format to freshman, sophomore, and junior level students in a teacher education program to determine their perceptions of study abroad programs. Results found that many students would be open to studying abroad but have little knowledge of other cultures. Additionally, financial and language barriers played a significant role in their decision-making processes regarding participation, as well as, ideal destination. Conclusions were drawn that greater education, information, and financial assistance from faculty and administration would be vital in students making informed decisions regarding study abroad programs.
