Let $C$ be a genus $2$ curve with Jacobian isomorphic to the square of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication by a maximal order in an imaginary quadratic field of discriminant $-d<0$. We show that if the stable model of $C$ has bad reduction over a prime $p$ then $p \leq d/4$. We give an algorithm to compute the set of such $p$ using the so-called refined Humbert invariant introduced by Kani. Using results from Kudla-Rapoport and the formula of Gross-Keating, we compute for each of these primes $p$ its exponent in the discriminant of the stable model of $C$. We conclude with some explicit computations for $d<100$ and compare our results with an unpublished formula by the third author., Comment: 31 pages, 3 tables, programs are available as ancillary files

We characterise, in terms of Dixmier-Ohno invariants, the types of singularities that a plane quartic curve can have. We then use these results to obtain new criteria for determining the stable reduction types of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 3.

In this paper we make explicit the constants of Habegger and Pazuki's work from 2017 on bounding the discriminant of cyclic Galois CM fields corresponding to genus 2 curves with CM by them and potentially good reduction outside a predefined set of primes. We also simplify some of the arguments.

In this paper we determine the conductor exponent of non-special Ciani quartics at primes of potentially good reduction in terms of the Ciani invariants. As an intermediate step in order to do so, we provide a reconstruction algorithm to construct Ciani quartics with given invariants. We also discuss how to descend the provided model to be defined over the same field as the invariants.

We give a conjectural characterisation of the stable reduction of plane quartics over local fields in terms of their Cayley octads. This results in p-adic criteria that efficiently give the stable reduction type amongst the 42 possible types, and whether the reduction is hyperelliptic or not. These criteria are in the vein of the machinery of "cluster pictures" for hyperelliptic curves. We also construct explicit families of quartic curves that realise all possible stable types, against which we test these criteria. Which integer sequences are sequences of generalized weights of a linear code? In this paper, we answer this question for linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and more generally for sum-rank metric codes. We do so under an existence assumption for MDS and MSRD codes. We also prove that the same integer sequences appear as sequences of greedy weights of linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and sum-rank metric codes. Finally, we characterize the integer sequences which appear as sequences of relative generalized weights (respectively, relative greedy weights) of linear block codes., Comment: 19 pages

This paper goes beyond Katz-Sarnak theory on the distribution of curves over finite fields according to their number of rational points, theoretically, experimentally and conjecturally. In particular, we give a formula for the limits of the moments measuring the asymmetry of this distribution for (non-hyperelliptic) curves of genus $g \geq 3$. The experiments point to a stronger notion of convergence than the one provided by the Katz-Sarnak framework for all curves of genus $\geq 3$. However, for elliptic curves and for hyperelliptic curves of every genus we prove that this stronger convergence cannot occur., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures. In this paper we introduce a new problem called the Isogenous Embedding Problem (IEP). The existence of solutions to this problem is related to the primes of bad reduction of CM curves of genus $3$ and we can detect potentially good reduction in absence of solutions. We propose an algorithm for computing the solutions to the IEP and run the algorithm through different families of curves. We were able to prove the reduction type of some particular curves at certain primes that were open cases in [LLLR21].

In this paper we inspect from closer the local and global points of the twists of the Klein quartic. For the local ones we use geometric arguments, while for the global ones we strongly use the modular interpretation of the twists. The main result is providing families with (conjecturally infinitely many) twists of the Klein quartic that at counter-examples to the Hasse principle.

For a given genus $g \geq 1$, we give lower bounds for the maximal number of rational points on a smooth projective absolutely irreducible curve of genus $g$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$. As a consequence of Katz-Sarnak theory, we first get for any given $g>0$, any $\varepsilon>0$ and all $q$ large enough, the existence of a curve of genus $g$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$ with at least $1+q+ (2g-\varepsilon) \sqrt{q}$ rational points. Then using sums of powers of traces of Frobenius of hyperelliptic curves, we get a lower bound of the form $1+q+1.71 \sqrt{q}$ valid for $g \geq 3$ and odd $q \geq 11$. Finally, explicit constructions of towers of curves improve this result, with a bound of the form $1+q+4 \sqrt{q} -32$ valid for all $g\ge 2$ and for all $q$., Comment: Minor revisions

In this paper we prove that there are finitely many modular curves that admit a smooth plane model. Moreover, if the degree of the model is greater than or equal to 19, no such curve exists. For modular curves of Shimura type we show that none can admit a smooth plane model of degree 5, 6 or 7. Further, if a modular curve of Shimura type admits a smooth plane model of degree 8 we show that it must be a twist of one of four curves.

Sum-rank metric codes have recently attracted the attention of many researchers, due to their relevance in several applications. Mathematically, the sum-rank metric is a natural generalization of both the Hamming metric and the rank metric. In this paper, we provide an Anticode Bound for the sum-rank metric, which extends the corresponding Hamming and rank-metric Anticode bounds. We classify then optimal anticodes, i.e., codes attaining the sum-rank metric Anticode Bound. We use these optimal anticodes to define generalized sum-rank weights and we study their main properties. In particular, we prove that the generalized weights of an MSRD code are determined by its parameters. As an application, in the Appendix we explain how generalized weights measure information leakage in multishot network coding.

This study's goal was to understand the extent to which providing access to media resources focused on critical science and engineering concepts can help children living in low-income households learn. The resources examined were from the PBS KIDS multi-platform property "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!" Researchers found that exposure to these resources had meaningful impacts on 4- to 5-year-old children's physical science knowledge and their ability to engage with science and engineering practices.

Let $\phi:\,X\rightarrow Y$ be a (possibly ramified) cover between two algebraic curves of positive genus. We develop tools that may identify the Prym variety of $\phi$, up to isogeny, as the Jacobian of a quotient curve $C$ in the Galois closure of the composition of $\phi$ with a well-chosen map $Y\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$. This method allows us to recover all previously obtained descriptions of a Prym variety in terms of a Jacobian that are known to us, besides yielding new applications. We also find algebraic equations for some of these new cases, including one where $X$ has genus $3$, $Y$ has genus $1$ and $\phi$ is a degree $3$ map totally ramified over $2$ points.

We study a 3-dimensional stratum $\mathcal{M}_{3,V}$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$ of curves of genus $3$ parameterizing curves $Y$ that admit a certain action of $V= C_2\times C_2$. We determine the possible types of the stable reduction of these curves to characteristic different from $2$. We define invariants for $\mathcal{M}_{3,V}$ and characterize the occurrence of each of the reduction types in terms of them. We also calculate the $j$-invariant (resp. the Igusa invariants) of the irreducible components of positive genus of the stable reduction of $Y$ in terms of the invariants., Comment: We corrected a mistake in Table 4 and expanded the appendices

This report presents the results of a first-of-its-kind national survey of parents, who were asked about the types of early science educational activities they do with their young children. It also includes a follow-up qualitative study, focused on low-income families, which sought to illuminate parents' survey responses. The purpose of the study was to provide new insights on the ways in which parents help their young children learn, as well as new information on parents' beliefs and practices related to early science learning and the use of learning media. Selected key findings: (1) Nearly all parents, regardless of income or education level, think it is important to help their young children learn, especially social skills, literacy, and mathematics; (2) Most parents say they are confident about their ability to teach their young children literacy, math, and social skills, but fewer parents are confident about science learning; and (3) Seven of 10 parents say that knowing what young children need to learn about science, and having ideas for doing science with everyday materials, would help them.

Transition planning is particularly important for dually identified English learners with disabilities, who frequently face additional challenges to postsecondary education success. This study examined postschool expectations, transition planning experiences, and supports of a nationally representative sample of English learners with disabilities, based on secondary analysis of the National Longitudinal Transition Study (NLTS) 2012. Results demonstrated that these students' experiences were similar to other students with disabilities except that, according to parents, the transition component of the individualized education program (IEP) was likely to be developed by school personnel, with little input from students and family members, and necessary information about careers and financial aid was lacking. These findings underscore the intersectional identities and related experiences of this population and the implications for policy, transition education, and school services. In this paper we give a passage formula between different invariants of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves: in particular between Tsuyumine and Shioda invariants. This is needed to get modular expressions for Shioda invariants, that is, for example, useful for proving the correctness of numerically computed equations of CM genus 3 hyperelliptic curves. On the other hand, we also get Shioda invariants described in terms of differences of roots of the equation defining the hyperelliptic curve, that has applications for studying the reduction type of the curve. Under certain conditions on its jacobian, we give a criterion for determining the type of bad reduction of a genus 3 hyperelliptic curve.

Let C/K: F = 0 be a smooth plane quartic over a complete discrete valuation field K. In a previous paper the authors togetehr with Q. Liu give various characterizations of the reduction (i.e. non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curve, hyperelliptic genus 3 curve or bad) of the stable model of C: in terms of the existence of a special plane quartic model and in terms of the valuations of the Dixmier-Ohno invariants of C. The last one gives in particular an easy computable criterion for the reduction type. However, it does not produce a stable model, even in the case of good reduction. In this paper we give an algorithm to obtain (an approximation of) the stable model when the reduction of the latter is hyperelliptic and the characteristic of the residue field is not 2. This is based on a new criterion giving the reduction type in terms of the valuations of the theta constants of C. In this article we prove an analogue of a theorem of Lachaud, Ritzenthaler, and Zykin, which allows us to connect invariants of binary oc-tics to Siegel modular forms of genus 3. We use this connection to show that certain modular functions, when restricted to the hyperelliptic locus, assume values whose denominators are products of powers of primes of bad reduction for the associated hyperelliptic curves. We illustrate our theorem with explicit computations. This work is motivated by the study of the value of these modular functions at CM points of the Siegel upper-half space, which, if their denominators are known, can be used to effectively compute models of (hyperelliptic, in our case) curves with CM.

Let $C/K$ be a smooth plane quartic over a discrete valuation field. We characterize the type of reduction (i.e. smooth plane quartic, hyperelliptic genus 3 curve or bad) over $K$ in terms of the existence of a special plane quartic model and, over $\bar{K}$, in terms of the valuations of certain algebraic invariants of $C$ when the characteristic of the residue field is not $2,\,3,\,5$ or $7$. On the way, we gather several results of general interest on geometric invariant theory over an arbitrary ring $R$ in the spirit of (Seshadri 1977). For instance when $R$ is a discrete valuation ring, we show the existence of a homogeneous system of parameters over $R$. We exhibit explicit ones for ternary quartic forms under the action of $\textrm{SL}_{3,R}$ depending only on the characteristic $p$ of the residue field. We illustrate our results with the case of Picard curves for which we give simple criteria for the type of reduction., Comment: Final version. We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof, and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.
