Aim: To study the body image built by patients with breast cancer after surgery, radical mastectomy and partial mastectomy, related to body parts directly involved in surgery and not directly related to it, and to investigate how this image affects bodily self-esteem. Method: Our sample comprised 23 patients (12 had been subjected to radical mastectomy and 11 to partial mastectomy) and 24 healthy women (they served as control group). Participants were assessed with the Body Grid technique. We analyzed the differences between groups using one way ANOVA and non-parametric tests (namely, H de Kruskal Wallis and U de Mann-Whitney). Results: Our findings allowed us to identify which were the most damaged aspects about self-esteem and body image in these patients, showing that there were no significant differences in body image and bodily self-esteem between patients subjected to radical and partial mastectomy. However, we found significant differences between body parts directly involved in surgery and those not directly related to it. Finally, we found significant differences between both groups of patients and the control group regarding body image and self-esteem. Conclusions: Our results show that the Body Grid Technique is helpful to identify the most affected aspects of body image in patients subjected to mastectomy and tailor psychological treatments aimed at improving body image in these patients. Objetivo: Estudiar la imagen corporal que construyen las pacientes diagnosticadas de cáncer de mama tras someterse a intervención quirúrgica, mastectomía radical y cirugía conservadora, tanto en lo referente a aspectos corporales relacionados directamente con la lesión como a zonas corporales no relacionadas, e investigar cómo esa imagen afecta a la autoestima centrada en lo corporal. Método: Contamos con una muestra de 23 pacientes (12 mujeres mastectomizadas y 11 con cirugía conservadora) y 24 mujeres sanas que sirvieron como grupo control. El instrumento de evaluación utilizado es la Técnica de la Rejilla Corporal. Se analizaron las diferencias entre los grupos mediante ANOVA de un factor y las pruebas no paramétricas H de Kruskal Wallis y U de Mann-Whitney. Resultados y conclusiones: Los resultados del estudio han permitido identificar qué aspectos son los más dañados en la autoestima y autoimagen de las pacientes, estableciendo que no existen diferencias significativas en la imagen corporal global y la autoestima centrada en lo corporal entre mujeres mastectomizadas y mujeres sometidas a cirugía conservadora, aunque sí en la imagen que se tiene de las zonas corporales específicamente implicadas en la cirugía. Sí se han encontrado diferencias entre estos dos grupos y el grupo de mujeres sanas en imagen corporal global y autoestima. Los resultados obtenidos permitirán identificar los aspectos de la imagen corporal más afectados en las pacientes y por tanto orientar posibles intervenciones psicológicas futuras hacia la reconstrucción adaptativa y sana de los mismos.

Introducción. Aunque el elemento clave de la esquizofrenia es la sintomatología psiquiátrica, se están llevando a cabo cada vez más estudios para examinar otros aspectos de la enfermedad como las experiencias subjetivas anormales y los déficit cognitivos. Sin embargo, sigue sin conocerse cómo se relacionan entre sí estos dos aspectos y cómo interactúan en diferentes subgrupos de pacientes esquizofrénicos. Objetivos: El principal objetivo es estudiar en profundidad la relación entre las experiencias subjetivas anormales y los déficit cognitivos en dos subgrupos de pacientes esquizofrénicos crónicos (Residuales y Paranoides). Método: Se analizaron las similitudes y diferencias en la ejecución de ambos grupos de pacientes en diferentes tareas neuropsicológicas y su percepción subjetiva de los síntomas. Resultados: Aunque ambos grupos de pacientes presentaron alteraciones de memoria, los déficit cognitivos fueron más pronunciados en los pacientes Residuales. Estos sujetos también refirieron alteraciones del discurso, fallos de memoria y trastornos del pensamiento. Por otra parte, los sujetos Paranoides rindieron mejor en todas las tareas neuropsicológicas excepto en el test Stroop porque su capacidad de inhibir respuestas inapropiadas parece estar más deteriorada. En relación con este hecho, estos sujetos refirieron más alteraciones perceptuales. Conclusiones: Ambos subtipos de pacientes se caracterizan por una percepción subjetiva de los síntomas. Además, su experiencia subjetiva de la enfermedad parece estar levemente relacionada con sus déficit cognitivos específicos. Introduction. Although the defining element of schizophrenia is psychiatric symptomatology, more and more studies are being conducted to study other aspects such as abnormal subjective experiences and cognitive deficits. Nonetheless, it remains unknown how these two latter aspects affect each other throughout the illness and how they interact in different subgroups of schizophrenic patients. Aims. The primary goal is to study in depth the relationship between abnormal subjective experiences and cognitive deficits in two subgroups of chronic schizophrenic outpatients (Residual and Paranoid subjects). Method. Similarities and differences in the performance of both groups of patients in different neuropsychological tasks and their subjective perception of the symptoms were analyzed. Results. Although both groups of patients presented with memory impairments, cognitive deficits were more prominent in Residual patients. These subjects also complained about speech disturbances, memory failures and thought disorders. On the other hand, Paranoid subjects performed better in all the neuropsychological tasks except for the Stroop test because their ability to inhibit inappropriate responses seems to be more impaired. In close relation to this, these subjects complained more about perceptual disturbances. Conclusions. Both subtypes of patients are characterised by a distinctive subjective perception of symptoms. Besides, their subjective experience of the illness seems to be mildly related to their specific cognitive deficits. Mediante el análisis de un caso clínico, este trabajo analiza algunos de los factores subyacentes que contribuyen al mantenimiento de los llamados trastornos de alimentación. Aparentemente, la anorexia es una lucha despiadada contra los esfuerzos de supervivencia del cuerpo; a pesar de lo cual, dota a este tipo de paciente de una fuerte identidad. Además les proporciona un rol especial para desempeñar en sus familias y, de alguna forma, les provee de un lugar propio en los grupos sociales a los que pertenecen; siendo éste un factor crucial, especialmente en la adolescencia. Este artículo contiene además un comentario sobre los factores esenciales que, en mi opinión, deberían ser tratados en la psicoterapia. Finalmente, se estudian algunos factores sociales que intervienen en el desarrollo de los trastornos de alimentación como la anorexia, la bulimia y el trastorno por atracón. Through the analysis of a case report, this work analyses some of the underlying factors contributing to the maintenance of the so-called eating disorders. Seemingly, anorexia is a ruthless fight of the patient s with the survival efforts of the body; but, in spite of this, anorexia pro-vides this kind of patients with a strong identity. It also provides them with a special role to perform in their families and, somehow, it supplies them with their own place in the social groups to which they belong; being this a crucial factor, especially when the patient is a teenager. This article contains as well a comment on the essential factors that, from my view, should be treated in psychotherapy. Finally, some social factors intervinig in the development of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorders are studied.

En este artículo se comentan algunos ejemplos recientes del comportamiento autodestructivo y se hace un breve recorrido por algunas aproximaciones teóricas que estudian este aspecto del comportamiento humano. Tras hacer referencia a algunos estudios científicos, se analiza "La Pianista", la novela autobiográfica de Elfriede Jelinek (la actual premio Nobel de literatura). Partiendo de dicha narración en primera persona del sadomasoquismo y la automutilación, se analizan algunos aspectos claves en este tipo de pacientes como: la elección del cuerpo como campo de batalla, la relación entre conducta autolesiva y la alexitimia, su tendencia a la exoactuación y sus problemas de identidad, entre otros. In this article, some recent samples of self-destructive behaviour are commented on and a brief overview of some theoretical approaches which study this aspect of human conduct is given. After mentioning some scientific studies, "The Piano teacher", the autobiographical novel of Elfriede Jelinek (the current Nobel Prize for Literature) is analysed. On the basis of the earlier cited narration in the first person of sadomasochism and self-mutilation, some key aspects in this kind of patients such as: the choice of the body as a battlefield, the relationship between self-harmful behaviour and alexithymia, his inclination to act out their conflicts and their identity problems, among others, are analysed.

Sabido es que Virginia Woolf es considerada como una de las escritoras más importantes del siglo XX. En este trabajo, se realiza un breve análisis de los aspectos más relevantes de la vida y de la obra literaria de la escritora. Después de unos breves comentarios sobre su biografía, se estudia la relación entre su estilo literario y algunas de sus obras más conocidas con los síntomas de la psicosis maniaco-depresiva que padecía. A lo largo de este trabajo, se hace especial hincapié en la relación de Virginia con el lenguaje: su dependencia de él y la insuficiencia de éste en el último período de su vida. Por último, se hace un rápido repaso de las principales teorías psicológicas de la manía, subrayando especialmente la importancia de la teoría psicoanalítica y las llamadas teorías cognitivo-conductuales de tercera generación, debido a sus estudios sobre la relación entre el lenguaje y las enfermedades mentales. It is well-known that Virginia Woolf is considered as being one of the most important writers in the 20th century. In this work, some of the most eminent aspects of the writer´s life and literary work are analyzed briefly. After some brief comments on her biography, it is studied the relationship between her literary style and some of her well-known works with the symptoms of the manic-depressive psychosis which she suffered from. Throughout this work, her relationship with language is highlighted: her dependance on it and the insuffiency of language in the late period of her life. Finally, a quick revision of the main psychological theories concerning mania is made, especially giving relevance to the psychoanalytic approach and to the so-called "cognitive-behavioural theories of third generation", due to its studies of the relationship between language and mental illnesses.

En este trabajo se estudió la eficacia de la Terapia Psicológica Integrada (IPT) para el tratamiento de pacientes psicóticos. Las personas que participaron en este estudio eran pacientes externos que estaban siendo tratados en el Centro de Salud Mental "Delicias", situado en Valladolid (España). Todos ellos estaban diagnosticados de esquizofrenia según la CIE-10. La primera evaluación fue llevada a cabo el 15 de Octubre del 2.002. Se compararon los grupos experimental y control en cuanto a psicopatología, habilidades sociales y capacidades cognitivas. El grupo experimental recibió el tratamiento psicológico, además del farmacológico, durante nueve meses. Mientras tanto, el grupo control recibió tratamiento farmacológico. La siguiente evaluación fue llevada a cabo el 30 de Junio del 2.003. Los resultados mostraron que se produjeron importantes mejoras en el funcionamiento social y capacidades cognitivas en los miembros del grupo experimental. Por tanto, este estudio apoya la idea de que el programa IPT es eficaz en el tratamiento de pacientes psicóticos. In this work, the effectiveness of the Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT) for the treatment of psychotic patients was studied. The people who took part in this study were outpatients who were being treated in the "DELICIAS" Mental Health Center, located in Valladolid (Spain). All of them were diagnosed with schizophrenia according to ICD-10. The first assessment was carried out on October 15th, 2.002. Experimental and control groups were compared in terms of psychopathology, social skills and cognitive abilities. The experimental group received the psychological treatment, as well as the pharmacological one, during nine months. Meanwhile, the control group received the pharmacological treatment. A follow-up assessment was carried out on June 25th, 2.003. Results showed that important improvements were made in the social functioning and cognitive abilities in the members of the experimental group. Therefore, this study supports the idea that the IPT program is effective in the treatment os psychotic patients.
