We establish a dynamical mechanism to explain the origin of the asymmetry between the arms observed in some barred disk galaxies, where one of the two arms emanating from the bar ends is very well defined, while the second one displays a ragged structure, extending between its ridge and the bar. To this purpose, we study the invariant manifolds associated to the Lyapunov periodic orbits around the unstable equilibrium points at the ends of the bar. Matter from the galaxy center is transported along these manifolds to the periphery, forming this way the spiral arms that emanate from the bar ends. If the mass distribution in the galaxy center is not homogeneous, because of an asymmetric bar with one side stronger than the other, or because of a non-centered bulge, the dynamics about the two unstable Lagrange points at the ends of the bar will not be symmetric as well. One of their invariant manifolds becomes more extended than the other, enclosing a smaller section and the escaping orbits on it are fewer and dispersed in a wider region. The result is a weaker arm, and more ragged than the one at the other end of the bar.

The aim of this paper is to obtain closed formulas for the perfect domination number, the Roman domination number and the perfect Roman domination number of lexicographic product graphs. We show that these formulas can be obtained relatively easily for the case of the first two parameters. The picture is quite different when it concerns the perfect Roman domination number. In this case, we obtain general bounds and then we give sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the bounds to be achieved. We also discuss the case of perfect Roman graphs and we characterize the lexicographic product graphs where the perfect Roman domination number equals the Roman domination number.

We have developed a computationally competitive N-body model of a previrialized aggregation of galaxies in a flat LambdaCDM universe to assess the role of the multiple mergers that take place during the formation stage of such systems in the configuration of the remnants assembled at their centres. An analysis of a suite of 48 simulations of low-mass forming groups (of about 1E13 solar masses) demonstrates that the gravitational dynamics involved in their hierarchical collapse is capable of creating realistic first-ranked galaxies without the aid of dissipative processes. Our simulations indicate that the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) constitute a distinct population from other group members, sketching a scenario in which the assembly path of these objects is dictated largely by the formation of their host system. We detect significant differences in the distribution of Sersic indices and total magnitudes, as well as a luminosity gap between BGGs and the next brightest galaxy that is positively correlated with the total luminosity of the parent group. Such gaps arise from both the grow of BGGs at the expense of lesser companions and the decrease in the relevance of second-ranked objects in equal measure. This results in a dearth of intermediate-mass galaxies which explains the characteristic central dip detected in their luminosity functions in dynamically young galaxy aggregations. The fact that the basic global properties of our BGGs define a thin mass fundamental plane strikingly similar to that followed giant early-type galaxies in the local universe reinforces confidence in the results obtained., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. Let ${\cal G}$ be a family of graphs defined on a common (labeled) vertex set $V$. A set $S\subset V$ is said to be a simultaneous strong metric generator for ${\cal G}$ if it is a strong metric generator for every graph of the family. The minimum cardinality among all simultaneous strong metric generators for ${\cal G}$, denoted by $Sd_s({\cal G})$, is called the simultaneous strong metric dimension of ${\cal G}$. We obtain general results on $Sd_s({\cal G})$ for arbitrary families of graphs, with special emphasis on the case of families composed by a graph and its complement. We study the role of the unstable equilibrium points in the transfer of matter in a galaxy using the potential of a rotating triaxial system. In particular, we study the neighbourhood of these points for energy levels and for main model parameters where the zero velocity curves just open and form a bottleneck in the region. For these energies, the transfer of matter from the inner to the outer parts and vice versa starts being possible. We study how the dynamics around the unstable equilibrium points is driven, by performing a partial normal form scheme and by computing the invariant manifolds of periodic orbits and quasi-periodic orbits using the reduced Hamiltonian. In particular, we compute some homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits playing a crucial role. We propose a theory to explain the formation of spiral arms and of all types of outer rings in barred galaxies, extending and applying the technique used in celestial mechanics to compute transfer orbits. Thus, our theory is based on the chaotic orbital motion driven by the invariant manifolds associated to the periodic orbits around the hyperbolic equilibrium points. In particular, spiral arms and outer rings are related to the presence of heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits. Thus, R1 rings are associated to the presence of heteroclinic orbits, while R1R2 rings are associated to the presence of homoclinic orbits. Spiral arms and R2 rings, however, appear when there exist neither heteroclinic nor homoclinic orbits. We examine the parameter space of three realistic, yet simple, barred galaxy models and discuss the formation of the different morphologies according to the properties of the galaxy model. We propose a new theory for the formation of rR_1 ring structures, i.e. for ring structures with both an inner and an outer ring, the latter having the form of ``8''. We propose that these rings are formed by material from the stable and unstable invariant manifolds associated with the Lyapunov orbits around the equilibrium points of a barred galaxy. We have compiled a new sample of galaxies with published catalogs of HII region coordinates. This sample, together with the former catalog of Garcia-Gomez and Athanassoula (1991) will form the basis for subsequent studies of the spiral structure in disc galaxies. In this paper we address the problem of the deprojection of the galaxy images. For this purpose we use two deprojection methods based on the HII region distribution and compare the results with the values found in the literature using other deprojection methods. Taking into account the results of all the methods, we propose optimum values for the position and inclination angles of all the galaxies in our sample., Comment: TeX file with 16 postscript figures

We present N-body simulations of groups of galaxies with a number of very different initial conditions. These include spherical isotropic, nonspherical anisotropic collapses and virialised spherical systems. In all cases but one the merging instability leads to the formation of a giant central galaxy in the center of the group. The initial conditions of the exception are such that no galaxies are present in the central part of the group. Thus some central seed of material is necessary to trigger the formation of a giant central galaxy. We concentrate on the properties of these giant central galaxies. Spherical virialised systems give rise to relatively round and isotropic systems, while aspherical initial conditions give rise to triaxial objects with anisotropic velocity dispersion tensors. In the latter cases the orientation of the resulting central galaxy is well correlated with that of the initial cluster. We compare the projected properties of the objects formed with the properties of real brightest cluster member galaxies. The surface density profiles are in good agreement with the observed surface brightness profiles. In the case of extended virialised groups the projected properties of the giant central galaxy are the same as the properties of cD galaxies. In this paper we test the performance of explicit simulations of groups of galaxies, (i.e. simulations in which each galaxy is treated as a mass point and the physics of the interactions is modelled by specific analand the physics of the interactions is modelled by specific analytical prescriptions for merging conditions), by comparing them with fully self-consistent simulations starting from identical initial conditions.
