Abstract

Knowledge of the distribution and extent of seagrass habitats is currently the basis of management and conservation policies of the coastal zones in most European countries. This basic information is being requested through European directives for the establishment of monitoring programmes and the implementation of specific actions to preserve the marine environment. In addition, this information is crucial for the quantification of the ecological importance usually attributed to seagrass habitats due to, for instance, their involvement in biogeochemical cycles, marine biodiversity and quality of coastal waters or global carbon budgets. The seagrass atlas of Spain represents a huge collective effort performed by 84 authors across 30 Spanish institutions largely involved in the scientific research, management and conservation of seagrass habitats during the last three decades. They have contributed to the availability of the most precise and realistic seagrass maps for each region of the Spanish coast which have been integrated in a GIS to obtain the distribution and area of each seagrass species. Most of this information has independently originated at a regional level by regional governments, universities and public research organisations, which explain the elevated heterogeneity in criteria, scales, methods and objectives of the available information. On this basis, seagrass habitats in Spain occupy a total surface of 1,541,63 km2, 89% of which is concentrated in the Mediterranean regions; the rest is present in sheltered estuarine areas of the Atlantic peninsular regions and in the open coastal waters of the Canary Islands, which represents 50% of the Atlantic meadows. Of this surface, 71.5% corresponds to Posidonia oceanica, 19.5% to Cymodocea nodosa, 3.1% to Zostera noltii (=Nanozostera noltii), 0.3% to Zostera marina and 1.2% to Halophila decipiens. Species distribution maps are presented (including Ruppia spp.), together with maps of the main impacts and pressures that has affected or threatened their conservation status, as well as the management tools established for their protection and conservation. Despite this considerable effort, and the fact that Spain has mapped wide shelf areas, the information available is still incomplete and with weak precision in many regions, which will require an investment of major effort in the near future to complete the whole picture and respond to demands of EU directives. 43. On the magnetic phase transition of Cr(II) methylphosphonate hydrate: an hybrid organic-inorganic canted antiferromagnet

Abstract

The magnetic properties of a microcrystalline powder sample of Cr[(CH3PO3)(H2O)] have been investigated by means of dc magnetization and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature, frequency and magnetic field. The magnetic measurements show the presence of a long range ordering with an hysteretic behaviour below the critical temperature TN of 40 K, which is a relatively high temperature for this class of molecule based magnets.1 The isothermal magnetization recorded at several temperatures below TN are typical of a canted antiferromagnet.2 More interesting, an analysis of the ac magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature plot reveals in the temperature region 34-40 K the presence of several features both in the ?' and ?" curves, whose nature is under investigation and will be presented and discussed. 44. Synthesis and magnetic characterization of two layered organic-inorganic hybrid Ni(II) and Mn(II) 3,4;9,10-perylenediimide bisphosphonates

Abstract

Two new layered metal(II) bis-phosphonates have been prepared by chemical assembling of a functional organic ligand with paramagnetic transition metal ions. The ligand is represented by the bifunctional R(PO3H2)2 molecule where R is the N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)perylene-3,4;9,10-tetracarboximide (hereafter PDI-BP). The latter features an extended ?- electron system, which is responsible of interesting optical properties. The PDI-BP ligand reacts with Mn(II) and Ni(II) ions to give the new metal(II) bisphosphonates of formula Mn2[(PDI-BP)(H2O)2]·0.5H2O (1) and Ni2[(PDIBP)( H2O)2]·3H2O (2). The compounds were characterized by several techniques and resulted to be scarcely crystalline red solids. The magnetic properties of both the compounds have been explored by a SQUID magnetometer in the temperature range from r. t. down to 2 K. Magnetic measurements were performed in the DC and AC modes as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The experiments in the high temperature region confirm the electronic spin configurations (d5(S = 5/2) for Mn(II) ion and d8(S = 1) for Ni(II) ion), respectively. At low temperatures, DC susceptibility vs. T measurements on compound (1) indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling and AC susceptibility experiments show two peaks in the in-phase and out-of-phase signals located at 2.5 K and 25 K. The slightly frequency dependent signal at lower temperatures might be attributed to domain wall movements in the ordered state, while the frequency dependent peak at higher temperatures may be due to disorder in the Mn(II) layer. Hysteresis cycles performed below 30 K indicate the presence of spin canting below that temperature.The magnetic behavior of compound (2) is similar to the previous one. AC susceptibility measurement vs. T shows a peak located at ca. 20 K, in both, the in-phase ?' and out-of phase ?'' components of the AC susceptibility. The signals are sligthly frequency dependent, and probably associated to disorder in the Ni(II) layer. Hysteresis loops recorded at several temperatures below 20 K together with the previous data are the signature of magnetic order.

cited By 2; International audience; Reactions of the [FeIII(CN)6]3- anion with the [CuII(tn)]2+ ion (tn = 1,3-diaminopropane) afford the compounds [CuII(tn)]2[FeII(CN) 6]3·[Na3FeIII(CN) 6]·12H2O (1) and [Cun(tn)] 2[FeII(CN)6]·KCl·5H 2O (2). Despite the differences concerning their asymmetric units, both structures present strong similar features: in both structures, the Cu(II) ion presents a square-base pyramidal CuN5 environment and each [FeII(CN)6]4- anion is linked to six Cu(II) ions through its six N atoms leading to infinite [CuII(tn)] 2[FeII(CN)6] layers which can be viewed as 2-D layered arrangement generated by the defective cubane units Cu 4Fe3 involving Fe-CN-Cu bridges. The most important differences between the two structures concern essentially the inter-layer arrangement which is occupied, in compound 1, by isolated paramagnetic [Fe(CN)6]3- anions and water molecules, while in compound 2, this interlayer space is occupied by K+, Cl- ions and water molecules. Magnetic data indicate for 1 weak antiferromagnetic interactions and presence of magnetically isolated [FeIII(CN) 6]3-anion and for 2 weak ferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) ions. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. cited By 19; International audience; Electrochemical combination of the magnetic dinuclear anion [MM′(C2O4)(NCS)8]4- (MM′ = CrIIICrIII, CrIIIFeIII) with the ET organic π-donor (ET = BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) gives rise to two new isostructural molecular hybrid salts ET5[MM′(C2O4)(NCS)8], with MM′ = CrCr (1), CrFe (2). The molecular structure of compound 1 has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The particular arrangement of the organic units consists of an unprecedented two-dimensional organic sublattice nearly similar to that observed in κ-phase structures. For both compounds, the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate (i) the ET radicals do not contribute to the magnetic moment probably due to the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between them, and (ii) in the anion, the magnetic coupling is antiferromagnetic for 1 (J = -3.65 cm-1) and ferromagnetic for 2 (J = 1.14 cm-1, J being the parameter of the exchange Hamiltonian H = -2JS1S2). The field dependence of the magnetization of compound 2 at 2.0 K gives further evidence of the S = 4 ground-state arising from the interaction between S = 3/2 Cr(III) and S = 5/2 Fe(III). EPR measurements confirm the nature of the magnetic interactions and the absence of any contribution from the organic part, as observed from the static magnetic measurement. Conductivity measurements and electronic band structure calculations show that both salts are semiconductors with low activation energies.

Abstract

For many years, the IAEA has published materials aimed at supporting the assessment of radiation impacts on human beings and the environment. Two major publications, Sediment Kd s and Concentration Factors for Radionuclides in the Marine Environment (Technical Reports Series No. 247), published in 1985, and the Handbook of Parameter Values for the Prediction of Radionuclide Transfer in Temperate Environments (Technical Reports Series No. 364), published in 1994, together provided a full set of available transfer parameter values for the marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments. For many years, these two publications have served as key references for radioecologists, modellers and authorities, providing data for use in environmental impact assessments. Since the publication of these two collections of data, a number of publications on transfer parameter values have been produced and merit consideration. Therefore, in 2000 the IAEA initiated a revision of Technical Reports Series No. 247 which resulted in the publication, in 2004, of Sediment Distribution Coefficients and Concentration Factors for Biota in the Marine Environment (Technical Reports Series No. 422), covering newly obtained data as well as changes in the regulatory framework. In 2003, within the framework of the Environmental Modelling for Radiation Safety (EMRAS) programme, the IAEA undertook a revision of Technical Reports Series No. 364. The current publication was prepared by the members of Working Group 1 of the EMRAS programme, chaired by P. Calmon (IRSN, France). This publication focuses on transfer parameter values; the models in which they are used generally are not described here. It is therefore supported by IAEA-TECDOC-1616, which accompanies this report and contains the full collection of the reviewed data and provides radioecological concepts and models facilitating the use of these values in specific situations. Abstract

For more than thirty years, the IAEA has published a set of documents aimed at the limitation of the radiation exposure of the population from various nuclear activities. In particular, in 1994 the IAEA published Technical Reports Series No. 364, Handbook of Parameter Values for the Prediction of Radionuclide Transfer in Temperate Environments. Over the years, it has proved to be a valuable reference for radioecologists, modellers and authorities in Member States, and has been quoted in numerous impact assessments. Technical Reports Series No. 364 was based on a review of available data up to the end of 1992. However, a number of high quality critical reviews have been produced in recent years for some of the transfer parameter values which merit consideration. Thus, it was assumed that there is sufficient new information available to warrant reconsideration of a significant proportion of the values given in Technical Reports Series No. 364 and to initiate an updating of Technical Reports Series No. 364 in the framework of the IAEA EMRAS (Environmental Modelling for RAdiation Safety) project. It is expected that the revision of Technical Reports Series No. 364 will initiate further updating of related IAEA publications, and international and national radiological models. The present IAEA-TECDOC is intended to be a support to the update of Technical Reports Series No. 364, overcoming the limitations of the former, and comprises both revised transfer parameter values, as well as missing data, key transfer processes, concepts and models that were found to be important for radiation safety. The publication was prepared by members of the EMRAS project Working Group 1, Theme 1 Revision of IAEA Technical Reports Series No. 364. The group was chaired initially by P. Santucci, followed by P.
