The characterization of the coefficient of the nonlinear optical Kerr effect, the nonlinear refractive index (n(2)), of several femtosecond laser crystals with compositions derived by total or partial replacement of D(2+) in DXO(4), X = Mo or W, is presented. Tetragonal (space group I4) Na-based double tungstates NaT(WO(4))(2) (T = Y, La, Gd, Lu and Bi) and double molybdate NaY(MoO(4))(2), as well as the monoclinic (space group C2/c) Li(3)Gd(3)Ba(2)(MoO(4))(8) crystals, have been measured by the z-scan technique. All these crystals present structural local disorder, and among them the tetragonal ones exhibit significant n(2) values, which should allow their efficient laser pulsed operation by Kerr-lens mode locking, especially NaBi(WO(4))(2), 68x10(-16) cm(2)/W (for sigma light), which is about twice than for the others. En la actualidad se ha podido ver una alta oferta y demanda de construcciones civiles tanto en el sector privado como en el público, generando esto la necesidad de construir obras a una gran velocidad, y teniendo en cuenta la reducción de los costos en cuanto a materiales y mano de obra. Ante esta necesidad de optimizar un proceso de construcción con una mayor eficiencia, en el menor tiempo posible y reduciendo costos tanto de mano de obra como de material, se ha venido cambiando la técnica de construcción tradicional por nuevas técnicas como el vaciado de concreto en muros y columnas utilizando formaletas de acero y aluminio, reemplazando así la pega de ladrillo, el desperdicio de madera a la hora de formaletear y la pérdida de tiempo productivo en el proceso. Ante la costosa oferta en el mercado, algunos constructores, han preferido hacer sus propias formaletas, incurriendo en errores de distribución de los elementos que soportan las cargas; lo que por supuesto ha dado como resultado el desperdicio de materiales, pérdida de tiempo y utilización de mano de obra al tener que reemplazar las formaletas dañadas a causa de los esfuerzos internos que se generan por el vaciado del concreto; a pesar de ello, esta técnica está teniendo más acogida por parte del gremio de la construcción a causa del elevado índice de demanda de vivienda que actualmente vive satisfactoriamente tanto el eje cafetero como gran parte del país. Aunque su construcción es sencilla, es de suma importancia tener una minuciosa inspección en el ensamble de éstas, la pericia y experiencia del soldador y de los obreros juegan un valor importante a la hora de obtener un resultado óptimo. Los costos para la construcción de las formaletas son bajos si se ve desde el punto de vista costo beneficio ya que a pesar de que el acero es un material para la construcción y es de fácil acceso, hoy en día maneja precios elevados.

Continuous wave and femtosecond mode-locked laser operation of Yb3+ in the tetragonal NaLu(WO4)2 crystal host is demonstrated by pumping with a Ti:sapphire laser. Pumping with 1.8 W at 974 nm, a maximum output power of 650 mW was achieved at 1029.6 nm. The slope efficiency was in excess of 60%. The laser performance was similar for the two polarizations. By inserting a birefringent filter the output wavelength was tunable from 1010 to 1055 nm. Pulses as short as 90 fs with an average power of 50 mW were generated by passive mode locking at a repetition rate of 95 MHz. These attractive laser properties of NaLu1−xYbx(WO4)2 are related to the inhomogeneous broadening of the Yb3+ spectral features resulting from the local disorder of the host crystal. We report the spectroscopic properties of Yb3+ in the 5–300 K temperature range and the optical properties of the host at room temperature.

The continuous-wave laser operation of Nd-doped tetragonal NaLa(WO4)2 crystal is studied at room temperature by optical pumping in the spectral region overlapping AlGaAs diode laser emission. This crystal has inhomogeneously broadened optical bands. From the room-temperature spectroscopic parameters determined it is found that the optimum Nd concentration for the 4F3/2 --> 4IJ laser channels must be in the 3-5 at.% range. For J=11/2 and 13/2 channels (lambda approximate to 1.06 and 1.3 mum) the most favourable polarization configuration is parallel to the crystallographic c axis, while for J=9/2 little polarization dependence of the laser efficiency is predicted. Laser operation was achieved with a 3.35 at.% Nd-doped sample grown by the Czochralski method. The laser operation was tested in an hemispherical optical cavity pumped by a Ti:sapphire laser. Stimulated emission at lambda=1056 nm was achieved for a wide spectral pumping range, lambda=790-820 nm.
