Search

Bars are remarkable stellar structures that can transport gas toward centers and drive the secular evolution of galaxies. In this context, it is important to locate dynamical resonances associated with bars. For this study, we used ${Spitzer}$ near-infrared images as a proxy for the stellar gravitational potential and the ALMA CO(J=2-1) gas distribution from the PHANGS survey to determine the position of the main dynamical resonances associated with the bars in the PHANGS sample of 74 nearby star-forming galaxies. We used the gravitational torque method to estimate the location of the bar corotation radius ($R_{\rm CR}$), where stars and gas rotate at the same angular velocity as the bar. Of the 46 barred galaxies in PHANGS, we have successfully determined the corotation (CR) for 38 of them. The mean ratio of the $R_{\rm CR}$ to the bar radius ($R_{\rm bar}$) is $\mathcal{R} = R_{\rm CR}/R_{\rm bar} = 1.12$, with a standard deviation of $0.39$. This is consistent with the average value expected from theory and suggests that bars are predominantly fast. We also compared our results with other bar CR measurements from the literature, which employ different methods, and find good agreement ($\rho = 0.64$). Finally, using rotation curves, we have estimated other relevant resonances such as the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) and the outer Lindblad resonance (OLR), which are often associated with rings. This work provides a useful catalog of resonances for a large sample of nearby galaxies and emphasizes the clear connection between bar dynamics and morphology.

We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of three Seyferts and showcase the intriguing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission characteristics in regions of $\sim 500\,\rm pc$ scales over or around their active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combining the model predictions and the measurements of PAH features and other infrared emission lines, we find that the central regions containing a high fraction of neutral PAHs with small sizes, e.g., those in ESO137-G034, are in highly heated environments, due to collisional shock heating, with hard and moderately intense radiation fields. Such environments are proposed to be associated with inhibited growth or preferential erosion of PAHs, decreasing the average PAH size and the overall abundance of PAHs. We additionally find that the central regions containing a high fraction of ionized PAHs with large sizes, e.g., those in MCG-05-23-016, are likely experiencing severe photo-ionization because of the radiative effects from the radiative shock precursor besides the AGN. The severe photo-ionization can contribute to the ionization of all PAHs and further destruction of small PAHs. Overall, different Seyferts, even different regions in the same galaxy, e.g., those in NGC\,3081, can contain PAH populations of different properties. Specifically, Seyferts that exhibit similar PAH characteristics to ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 also tend to have similar emission line properties to them, suggesting that the explanations for PAH characteristics of ESO137-G034 and MCG-05-23-016 may also apply generally. Utilizing JWST MIRI/MRS IFU observations of the kiloparsec scale central regions, we showcase the diversity of ionized gas distributions and kinematics in six nearby Seyfert galaxies included in the GATOS survey. Specifically, we present spatially resolved flux distribution and velocity field maps of six ionized emission lines covering a large range of ionization potentials ($15.8-97.1$ eV). Based on these maps, we showcase the evidence of ionized gas outflows in the six targets, and find some highly disturbed regions in NGC\,5728, NGC\,5506, and ESO137-G034. We propose AGN-driven radio jets plausibly play an important role in triggering these highly disturbed regions. With the outflow rates estimated based on [Ne~{\footnotesize V}] emission, we find the six targets tend to have ionized outflow rates converged to a narrower range than previous finding. Spiral arms are some of the most spectacular features in disc galaxies, and also present in our own Milky Way. It has been argued that star formation should proceed more efficiently in spiral arms as a result of gas compression. Yet, observational studies have so far yielded contradictory results. Here we examine arm/interarm surface density contrasts at ~100 pc resolution in 28 spiral galaxies from the PHANGS survey. We find that the arm/interarm contrast in stellar mass surface density (Sigma_*) is very modest, typically a few tens of percent. This is much smaller than the contrasts measured for molecular gas (Sigma_mol) or star formation rate (Sigma_SFR) surface density, which typically reach a factor of ~2-3. Yet, Sigma_mol and Sigma_SFR contrasts show a significant correlation with the enhancement in Sigma_*, suggesting that the small stellar contrast largely dictates the stronger accumulation of gas and star formation. All these contrasts increase for grand-design spirals compared to multi-armed and flocculent systems (and for galaxies with high stellar mass). The median star formation efficiency (SFE) of the molecular gas is 16% higher in spiral arms than in interarm regions, with a large scatter, and the contrast increases significantly (median SFE contrast 2.34) for regions of particularly enhanced stellar contrast (Sigma_* contrast >1.97). The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (Sigma_mol/Sigma_atom) is higher in spiral arms, pointing to a transformation of atomic to molecular gas. In conclusion, the boost in the star formation efficiency of molecular gas in spiral arms is generally modest or absent, except for locations with exceptionally large stellar contrasts. We report the detection of extended (>0.5-1kpc) high-ionization [MgIV] 4.487 $\mu$m (80 eV) emission in four local luminous infrared galaxies observed with JWST/NIRSpec. Excluding the nucleus and outflow of the Type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the sample, we find that the [MgIV] luminosity is well correlated with that of H recombination lines, which mainly trace star forming clumps in these objects, and that the [ArVI] 4.530 $\mu$m (75 eV), usually seen in AGN, is undetected. On 100-400pc scales, the [MgIV] line profiles are broader (sigma([MgIV])=90 +- 25 km/s) and shifted (Delta_v up to +- 50 km/s) compared to those of the H recombination lines and lower ionization transitions (e.g., sigma(Hu-12)=57 +- 15 km/s). The [MgIV] kinematics follow the large scale rotating velocity field of these galaxies and the broad [MgIV] profiles are compatible with the broad wings detected in the H recombination lines. Based on these observational results, extended highly ionized gas more turbulent than the ambient interstellar medium, possibly as a result of ionizing shocks associated with star-formation, is the most likely origin of the [MgIV] emission. We also computed new grids of photoionization and shock models to investigate where the [MgIV] line originates. Shocks with velocities of 100-130 km/s reproduce the observed line ratios and the [MgIV] luminosity agrees with that expected from the mechanical energy released by supernove (SNe) in these regions. Therefore, these models support shocks induced by SNe as the origin of the [MgIV] line. Future studies on the stellar feedback from SNe will benefit from the [MgIV] line that is little affected by obscuration and, in absence of an AGN, can only be produced by shocks due to its high ionization potential., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters. 6 pages, 6 figures. Polar dust has been discovered in a number of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), with radiation-driven torus models predicting a wind to be its main driver. However, little is known about its characteristics, spatial extent, or connection to the larger scale outflows. We present the first JWST/MIRI study aimed at imaging polar dust by zooming onto the centre of ESO 428-G14, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) survey of local AGN. We detect extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission within 200 pc from the nucleus. This polar structure is co-linear with a radio jet and lies perpendicular to a molecular gas lane that feeds and obscures the nucleus. Its morphology bears a striking resemblance to that of gas ionised by the AGN in the narrow-line region. We demonstrate that part of this spatial correspondence is due to contamination within the JWST filter bands from strong emission lines. Correcting for the contamination, we find the morphology of the dust continuum to be more compact, though still clearly extended out to ~ 100 pc. We estimate the emitting dust has a temperature of ~ 120 K. Using simple models, we find that the heating of small dust grains by the radiation from the central AGN and/or radiative jet-induced shocks is responsible for the extended MIR emission. Radiation-driven dusty winds from the torus is unlikely to be important. We present new optical GTC/MEGARA seeing-limited (0.9") integral-field observations of NGC 5506, together with ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) transition at a 0.2" (25 pc) resolution. NGC 5506 is a luminous (bolometric luminosity of $\sim 10^{44}$ erg/s) nearby (26 Mpc) Seyfert galaxy, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We modelled the CO(3-2) kinematics with 3D-Barolo, revealing a rotating and outflowing cold gas ring within the central 1.2 kpc. We derived an integrated cold molecular gas mass outflow rate for the ring of 8 M$_{\odot}$/yr. We fitted the optical emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components to separate rotation from non-circular motions. We detected high [OIII]$\lambda$5007 projected velocities (up to 1000 km/s) at the active galactic nucleus (AGN) position, decreasing with radius to an average 330 km/s around 350 pc. We also modelled the [OIII] gas kinematics with a non-parametric method, estimating the ionisation parameter and electron density in every spaxel, from which we derived an ionised mass outflow rate of 0.076 M$_{\odot}$/yr within the central 1.2 kpc. Regions of high CO(3-2) velocity dispersion, extending to projected distances of 350 pc from the AGN, appear to be the result from the interaction of the AGN wind with molecular gas in the galaxy's disc. Additionally, we find the ionised outflow to spatially correlate with radio and soft X-ray emission in the central kiloparsec. We conclude that the effects of AGN feedback in NGC 5506 manifest as a large-scale ionised wind interacting with the molecular disc, resulting in outflows extending to radial distances of 610 pc, Comment: 24 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a new physically-motivated model for estimating the molecular line emission in active galaxies. The model takes into account (i) the internal density structure of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), (ii) the heating associated both to stars and to the active galactic nuclei (AGN), respectively producing photodissociation regions (PDRs) and X-ray dominated regions (XDRs) within the GMCs, and (iii) the mass distribution of GMCs within the galaxy volume. The model needs, as input parameters, the radial profiles of molecular mass, far-UV flux and X-ray flux for a given galaxy, and it has two free parameters: the CO-to-H2 conversion factor $\alpha_{CO}$, and the X-ray attenuation column density $N_H$. We test this model on a sample of 24 local ($z \leq 0.06$) AGN-host galaxies, simulating their carbon monoxide spectral line energy distribution (CO SLED). We compare the results with the available observations and calculate, for each galaxy, the best ($\alpha_{CO}$, $N_H$) with a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, finding values consistent with those present in the literature. We find a median $\alpha_{CO} = 4.8$ M$_{\odot}$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$ for our sample. In all the modelled galaxies, we find the XDR component of the CO SLED to dominate the CO luminosity from $J_{\text{upp}} \geq 4$. We present the first systematic study of the molecular gas and star formation efficiency in a sample of ten narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected to have X-ray Ultra Fast Outflows and, therefore, to potentially show AGN feedback effects. CO observations were obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope in six galaxies and from the literature for four galaxies. We derived the stellar mass, star formation rate, AGN and FIR dust luminosities by fitting the multi-band spectral energy distributions with the CIGALE code. Most of the galaxies in our sample lie above the main sequence (MS) and the molecular depletion time is one to two orders of magnitude shorter than the one typically measured in local star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we found a promising correlation between the star formation efficiency and the Eddington ratio, as well as a tentative correlation with the AGN luminosity. The role played by the AGN activity in the regulation of star formation within the host galaxies of our sample remains uncertain (little or no effect? positive feedback?). Fits the infrared spectra from the nuclear regions of AGN can place constraints on the dust properties, distribution, and geometry by comparison with models. However, none of the currently available models fully describe the observations of AGN currently available. Among the aspects least explored, here we focus on the role of dust grain size. We offer the community a new spectral energy distribution (SED) library, hereinafter [GoMar23] model, which is based on the two-phase torus model developed before with the inclusion of the grain size as a model parameter, parameterized by the maximum grain size Psize or equivalently the mass-weighted average grain size < P >. We created 691,200 SEDs using the SKIRT code, where the maximum grain size can vary within the range Psize = 0.01 - 10.0um ( < P >= 0.007 - 3.41um). We fit this new and several existing libraries to a sample of 68 nearby and luminous AGNs with Spitzer/IRS spectra dominated by AGN-heated dust. We find that the [GoMar23] model can adequately reproduce up to 85-88% of the spectra. The dust grain size parameter significantly improves the final fit in up to 90% of these spectra. Statistical tests indicate that the grain size is the third most important parameter in the fitting procedure (after the size and half opening angle of the torus). The requirement of a foreground extinction by our model is lower compared to purely clumpy models. We find that 41% of our sample requires that the maximum dust grain size is as large as Psize =10um (< P >= 3.41um). Nonetheless, we also remark that disk+wind and clumpy torus models are still required to reproduce the spectra of a non-negligible fraction of objects, suggesting the need for several dust geometries to explain the infrared continuum of AGN. We present the results from the study of the resolved distribution of cold molecular gas around eight young (<10^6 yr), peaked-spectrum radio galaxies. This has allowed us to trace the interplay between the radio jets and the surrounding medium. For three of these sources we present new CO(1-0) observations, obtained with NOEMA. In two targets, we also detected CN lines, both in emission and absorption. Combining the new observations with already published data, we discuss the main results obtained. Although we found that a large fraction of the cold molecular gas is distributed in disc-like rotating structures, in most of the sources high turbulence and deviations from purely quiescent gas (including outflows) were observed in the region co-spatial with the radio continuum emission. This suggests the presence of an interaction between radio plasma and cold molecular gas. We found that newly born and young radio jets, even those with low power i.e., P_jet<10^45 erg/s), can drive massive outflows of cold, molecular gas. The outflows are, however, limited to the sub-kpc regions and likely short lived. On larger scales (a few kpc), we observed cases where the molecular gas appears to avoid the radio lobes and, instead, wraps around them. The results suggest the presence of an evolutionary sequence, consistent with simulations, where the type of impact of the radio plasma changes as the jet expands, going from a direct jet-cloud interaction on sub-kpc scales to a gentler pushing aside of the gas, increasing its turbulence and likely limiting its cooling. This effect can be mediated by the cocoon of shocked gas inflated by the jet-cloud interactions. The Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS17020+4544 is one of the few AGN where a galaxy-scale energy-conserving outflow was revealed. This paper reports on NOEMA observations addressed to constrain the spatial scale of the CO emission in outflow. The molecular outflowing gas is resolved in five components tracing approaching and receding gas, all located at a distance of 2-3~kpc on the West and East side of the active nucleus. This high velocity gas (up to v_out=~1900 km/s) is not coincident with the rotation pattern of the CO gas in the host galaxy disk. The estimated mass outflow rate shows that with a global mass output of $\dot{M}_{H_2}$=~139$\pm$20$~M_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$, this powerful galaxy-scale outflow is consistent with the wind conserving its energy, and with a momentum rate boost of a factor of ~30 compared to the momentum rate of the nuclear X-ray wind. Preliminary results from ancillary X-ray (Chandra) and radio images (e-MERLIN) are reported. While the nature of the radio source is not conclusive, the Chandra image may tentatively trace extended emission, as expected by an expanding bubble of hot X-ray gas. The outcome of the NOEMA analysis and of past and ongoing publications dedicated to the description of the outflow multi-band phenomenology in IRAS17020+4544 concur to provide compelling reasons to postulate that an outflow shocking with the galaxy interstellar medium is driving the multi-phase wind in this peculiar AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 17 pages, 7 figures

We present new HCN and HCO$^+$ ($J$=3-2) images of the nearby star-forming galaxies (SFGs) NGC 3351, NGC 3627, and NGC 4321. The observations, obtained with the Morita ALMA Compact Array, have a spatial resolution of $\sim$290-440 pc and resolve the inner $R_\textrm{gal} \lesssim$ 0.6-1 kpc of the targets, as well as the southern bar end of NGC 3627. We complement this data set with publicly available images of lower excitation lines of HCN, HCO$^+$, and CO and analyse the behaviour of a representative set of line ratios: HCN(3-2)/HCN(1-0), HCN(3-2)/HCO$^+$(3-2), HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1), and HCN(3-2)/CO(2-1). Most of these ratios peak at the galaxy centres and decrease outwards. We compare the HCN and HCO$^+$ observations with a grid of one-phase, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer models and find them compatible with models that predict subthermally excited and optically thick lines. We study the systematic variations of the line ratios across the targets as a function of the stellar surface density ($\Sigma_\textrm{star}$), the intensity-weighted CO(2-1) ($\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$), and the star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_\text{SFR}$). We find no apparent correlation with $\Sigma_\text{SFR}$, but positive correlations with the other two parameters, which are stronger in the case of $\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$. The HCN/CO-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ relations show $\lesssim$0.3 dex galaxy-to-galaxy offsets, with HCN(3-2)/CO(2-1)-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ being $\sim$2 times steeper than HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1). In contrast, the HCN(3-2)/HCN(1-0)-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ relation exhibits a tighter alignment between galaxies. We aim to shed light on the physical properties and kinematics of the molecular material in the nucleus of one of the closest type 2 active galaxies. To this end, we obtained high angular resolution ALMA observations of the nucleus of the Circinus galaxy. The observations map the emission at 350GHz and 690GHz with spatial resolutions of ~3.8pc and ~2.2pc, respectively. The continuum emission traces cold ($T\lesssim100$K) dust in a circumnuclear disk with spiral arms on scales of 25pc, plus a marginally resolved nuclear emission peak. The latter is not extended in polar direction as claimed based on earlier ALMA observations. A significant amount (of the order of 40%) of the 350GHz emission is not related to dust, but most likely free-free emission instead. We detect CO(3-2) and CO(6-5) as well as HCO$^+$(4-3), HCN(4-3), and CS(4-3). The CO emission is extended, showing a spiral pattern, similar to the extended dust emission. Towards the nucleus, CO is excited to higher transitions and its emission is self-absorbed, leading to an apparent hole in the CO(3-2) but not the CO(6-5) emission. On the other hand, the high gas density tracers HCO$^+$, HCN, and CS show a strong, yet unresolved (($\lesssim4$pc) concentration of the emission at the nucleus, pointing at a very small 'torus'. The kinematics are dominated by rotation and point at a geometrically thin disk down to the resolution limit of our observations. In contrast to several other AGNs, no HCN enhancement is found towards the nucleus. The Circinus nucleus is therefore composed of at least two distinct components: (1) an optically thin, warm outflow of ionised gas containing clouds of dust; and (2) a cold molecular and dusty disk. These findings support the most recent radiative transfer calculations of the obscuring structures in AGNs, which find a similar two-component structure. Thanks to ground-based infrared and sub-mm observations the study of the dusty torus of nearby AGN has greatly advanced in the last years. With the aim of further investigating the nuclear mid-infrared emission of the archetypal Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068, here we present a fitting to the N- and Q-band Michelle/Gemini spectra. We initially test several available SED libraries, including a smooth, clumpy and two phase torus models, and a clumpy disk plus wind model. Although, the smooth torus model describe the spectra of NGC1068 if we allow to vary some model parameters among the two spectral bands. Motivated by this result, we produced new SEDs using the radiative transfer code SKIRT. We use two concentric tori that allow us to test a more complex geometry. We test different values for the inner and outer radii, half opening angle, radial and polar exponent of the power-law density profile, opacity, and viewing angle. Furthermore, we also test the dust grains size and different optical and calorimetric properties of silicate grains. The best fitting model consists of two concentric components with outer radii of 1.8 and 28 pc, respectively. We find that the size and the optical and calorimetric properties of graphite and silicate grains in the dust structure are key to reproduce the spectra of NGC1068. We conclude that the dust in NGC1068 reaches different scales, where the highest contribution to the mid-infrared is given by a central and compact component. A less dense and extended component is present, which can be either part of the same torus (conforming a flared disk) or can represent the emission of a polar dust component, as already suggested from interferometric observations.

We present a detailed study of the molecular gas content and stellar population properties of three massive galaxies at 1 < z < 1.3 that are in different stages of quenching. The galaxies were selected to have a quiescent optical/near-infrared spectral energy distribution and a relatively bright emission at 24 micron, and show remarkably diverse properties. CO emission from each of the three galaxies is detected in deep NOEMA observations, allowing us to derive molecular gas fractions Mgas/Mstar of 13-23%. We also reconstruct the star formation histories by fitting models to the observed photometry and optical spectroscopy, finding evidence for recent rejuvenation in one object, slow quenching in another, and rapid quenching in the third system. To better constrain the quenching mechanism we explore the depletion times for our sample and other similar samples at z~0.7 from the literature. We find that the depletion times are highly dependent on the method adopted to measure the star formation rate: using the UV+IR luminosity we obtain depletion times about 6 times shorter than those derived using dust-corrected [OII] emission. When adopting the star formation rates from spectral fitting, which are arguably more robust, we find that recently quenched galaxies and star-forming galaxies have similar depletion times, while older quiescent systems have longer depletion times. Galaxies with nuclear bars are believed to efficiently drive gas inward, generating a nuclear starburst and possibly an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We confirm this scenario for the isolated, double-barred, luminous infrared galaxy ESO 320-G030 based on an analysis of Herschel and ALMA spectroscopic observations. Herschel/PACS and SPIRE observations of ESO 320-G030 show absorption/emission in 18 lines of H2O, which we combine with the ALMA H2O 423-330 448 GHz line (Eupper~400 K) and continuum images to study the nuclear region. Radiative transfer models indicate that 3 nuclear components are required to account for the H2O and continuum data. An envelope, with R~130-150 pc, T_dust~50 K, and N_H2~2x10^{23} cm^{-2}, surrounds a nuclear disk with R~40 pc and tau_100um~1.5-3 (N_H2~2x10^{24} cm^{-2}) and an extremely compact (R~12 pc), warm (~100 K), and buried (tau_100um>5, N_H2>~5x10^{24} cm^{-2}) core component. The three nuclear components account for 70% of the galaxy L_IR (SFR~16-18 Msun yr^{-1}). The nucleus is fed by a molecular inflow observed in CO 2-1 with ALMA, which is associated with the nuclear bar. With decreasing radius (r=450-225 pc), the mass inflow rate increases up to ~20 Msun yr^{-1}, which is similar to the nuclear SFR, indicating that the starburst is sustained by the inflow. At lower r, the inflow is best probed by the far-infrared OH ground-state doublets, with an estimated inflow rate of ~30 Msun yr^{-1}. The short timescale of ~20 Myr for nuclear gas replenishment indicates quick secular evolution, and indicates that we are witnessing an intermediate stage (<100 Myr) proto-pseudobulge fed by a massive inflow that is driven by a strong nuclear bar. Our aim is to explore the close environment of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and its connection to the host galaxy through the morphology and dynamics of the cold gas inside the central kpc in nearby AGN. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of AGN feeding and feedback caught in action in NGC613 and NGC1808 at high resolution (few pc), part of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project. We detected trailing spirals inside the central 100pc, efficiently driving the molecular gas into the SMBH, and molecular outflows driven by the AGN. Using ALMA data, we have studied the HC$_3$N and continuum emission in the starburst ring (SB ring) and the circumnuclear disc (CND) of the SB/AGN composite galaxy NGC 1068. We have detected emission from vibrationally excited HC$_3$N (HC$_3$N*) only towards one star-forming region of the SB ring. Remarkably, HC$_3$N* was not detected towards the CND despite its large HC$_3$N $v=0$ column density. From LTE and non-LTE modelling of HC$_3$N*, we obtained a dust temperature of $ T_\text{dust} \sim 250$ K and a density of $n_{\text{H}_2}=6\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ for this star-forming region. The estimated IR luminosity of $5.8\times10^8$ L$_\odot$ is typical of proto-Super Star Clusters (proto-SSC) observed in the SB galaxy NGC 253. We use the continuum emissions at $147$ GHz and $350$ GHz, along with CO and Pa $\alpha$, to estimate the ages of other $14$ SSCs in the SB ring. We find the youngest SSCs to be associated with the region connecting the nuclear bar with the SB ring, supporting the scenario of sequential star formation. For the CND, our analysis yields $T_\text{dust} \leqslant 100$ K and $n_{\text{H}_2}\sim(3-6)\times10^5$cm$^{-3}$. The very different dust temperatures found for the CND and the proto-SSC indicates that, while the dust in the proto-SSC is being efficiently heated from the inside by the radiation from massive proto-stars, the CND is being heated externally by the AGN, which in the IR optically thin case can only heat the dust to $56$ K. We discuss the implications of the non-detection of HC$_3$N* near the luminous AGN in NGC 1068 on the interpretation of the HC$_3$N* emission observed in the SB/AGN composite galaxies NGC 4418 and Arp 220., Comment: submitted to MNRAS on 08/08/2020

We aim at carrying out a comprehensive study of the nearby composite AGN-SB galaxy, NGC 4945, using spectroscopic and photometric data from the Herschel satellite. In particular, we want to characterize the thermal structure in this galaxy by a multi-transitions analysis of the spatial distribution of the 12^CO emission at different spatial scales using HIFI, PACS, SPIRE as well as APEX data. We combined the 12^CO/IR flux ratios and the LTE analysis of the 12^CO images to derive the thermal structure of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) for spatial scales raging from <200 pc to 2 kpc. From the 12^CO analysis we found clear trend in the distribution of the derived temperatures and the 12^CO/IR ratios. It is remarkable that at intermediate scales (360 pc-1 kpc) we see large temperatures in the direction of the X-ray outflow while at smaller scales (<200 pc-360 pc), the highest temperature, derived from the high-J lines, is not found toward the nucleus, but toward the galaxy plane. The thermal structure derived from the 12CO multi-transition analysis suggests that mechanical heating, like shocks or turbulence, dominates the heating of the ISM in the nucleus of NGC 4945 located beyond 100 pc from the center of the galaxy. This result is further supported by the Kazandjian et al. 2015 models, which are able to reproduce the emission observed at high-J (PACS) 12^CO transitions when mechanical heating mechanisms are included. We report on the results of a search for serendipitous sources in CO emission in 110 cubes targeting CO(2-1), CO(3-2), and CO(6-5) at z ~ 1-2 from the second Plateau de Bure High-z Blue-Sequence Survey (PHIBSS2). The PHIBSS2 observations were part of a 4-year legacy program at the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer aimed at studying early galaxy evolution from the perspective of molecular gas reservoirs. We present a catalog of 67 candidate secondary sources from this search, with 45 out of the 110 data cubes showing sources in addition to the primary target that appear to be field detections, unrelated to the central sources. This catalog includes the redshifts, line widths, fluxes, as well as an estimation of their reliability based on their false positive probability. We perform a search in the 3D-HST/CANDELS catalogs for the secondary CO detections and tentatively find that ~64% of these have optical counterparts, which we use to constrain their redshifts. Finally, we use our catalog of candidate CO detections to derive the CO(2-1), CO(3-2), CO(4-3), CO(5-4), and CO(6-5) luminosity functions over a range of redshifts, as well as the molecular gas mass density evolution. Despite the different methodology, these results are in very good agreement with previous observational constraints derived from blind searches in deep fields. In the optical spectra of galaxies, the separation of line emission from gas ionised by star formation and an AGN, or by star formation and shocks, are very well-understood problems. However, separating line emission between AGN and shocks has proven difficult. With the aid of a new three-dimensional diagnostic diagram, we show the simultaneous separation of line emission from star formation, shocks, and AGN in NGC 1068, and quantify the ratio of star formation, shocks, and AGN in each spaxel. The AGN, shock, and star formation luminosity distributions across the galaxy accurately align with X-ray, radio, and CO(3-2) observations, respectively. Comparisons with previous separation methods show that the shocked emission heavily mixes with the AGN emission. We also show that if the H$\alpha$ flux is to be used as a star formation rate indicator, separating line emission from as many sources as possible should be attempted to ensure accurate results., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The obscuring structure surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be explained as a dust and gas flow cycle that fundamentally connects the AGN with their host galaxies. This structure is believed to be associated with dusty winds driven by radiation pressure. However, the role of magnetic fields, which are invoked in almost all models for accretion onto a supermassive black hole and outflows, is not thoroughly studied. Here we report the first detection of polarized thermal emission by means of magnetically aligned dust grains in the dusty torus of NGC 1068 using ALMA Cycle 4 polarimetric dust continuum observations ($0.07"$, $4.2$ pc; 348.5 GHz, $860$ $\mu$m). The polarized torus has an asymmetric variation across the equatorial axis with a peak polarization of $3.7\pm0.5$\% and position angle of $109\pm2^{\circ}$ (B-vector) at $\sim8$ pc east from the core. We compute synthetic polarimetric observations of magnetically aligned dust grains assuming a toroidal magnetic field and homogeneous grain alignment. We conclude that the measured 860 $\mu$m continuum polarization arises from magnetically aligned dust grains in an optically thin region of the torus. The asymmetric polarization across the equatorial axis of the torus arises from 1) an inhomogeneous optical depth, and 2) a variation of the velocity dispersion, i.e. variation of the magnetic field turbulence at sub-pc scales, from the eastern to the western region of the torus. These observations and modeling constrain the torus properties beyond spectral energy distribution results. In the framework of understanding the gas and stellar kinematics and their relations to AGNs and galaxy evolution scenarios, we present spatially resolved distributions and kinematics of the stars and gas in the central $\sim 800$-pc radius of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. We obtained $H+K$- and $K$-band near-infrared (NIR) integral-field observations from VLT/SINFONI. Our results reveal strong broad and narrow emission-line components of ionized gas (hydrogen recombination lines Pa$\alpha $ and Br$\gamma$) in the nuclear region, as well as hot dust with a temperature of $\sim 1300$ K, both typical for type-1 AGNs.From $M_{\mathrm{BH}}-\sigma_*$ and the broad components of hydrogen recombination lines, we find a black-hole mass of $(5-10)\times 10^6 \, M_{\odot}$. In the central $\sim 800$ pc, we find a hot molecular gas mass of $\sim 615$ M$_{\odot}$, which corresponds to a cold molecular gas reservoir of $(2-8)\times 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. However, there is a molecular gas deficiency in the nuclear region.The gas and stellar-velocity maps both show rotation patterns consistent with the large-scale rotation of the galaxy. However, the gaseous and stellar kinematics show deviations from pure disk rotation, which suggest streaming motions in the central $< 200$ pc and a velocity twist at the location of the ring which indicates deviations in disk and ring rotation velocities in accordance with published CO kinematics. We detect a blueshifted emission line split in Pa$\alpha$, associated with the nuclear region only. We investigate the star-formation properties of the hot spots in the circumnuclear ring which have starburst ages of $\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{Myr}$ and find indications for an age gradient on the western side of the ring. In addition, our high-resolution data reveal further substructure within this ring which also shows enhanced star forming activity close to the nucleus.

We present the first spatially resolved (~0.5 kpc) measurements of the molecular gas depletion time $\tau_{depl}$ across the disk of the interacting spiral galaxy NGC\,2276, a system with an asymmetric morphology in various SFR tracers. To estimate $\tau_{depl}$, we use new NOEMA observations of the $^{12}$CO(1-0) emission tracing the bulk molecular gas reservoir in NGC 2276, and extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ measurements obtained with the PMAS/PPaK integral field unit for robust estimates of the SFR. We find a systematic decrease in $\tau_{depl}$ of 1-1.5 dex across the disk of NGC 2276, with a further, abrupt drop in $\tau_{depl}$ of ~1 dex along the galaxy's western edge. The global $\tau_{depl}$ in NGC 2776 is $\tau_{depl}=0.55$ Gyr, insistent with literature measurements for the nearby galaxy population. Such a large range in $\tau_{depl}$ on sub-kpc scales has never previously been observed within an individual isolated or pre-merger system. When using a metallicity-dependent molecular gas conversion factor X$\rm_{CO}$ the variation decreases by 0.5 dex. We attribute the variation in $\tau_{depl}$ to the influence of galactic-scale tidal forces and ram pressure on NGC 2276's molecular interstellar medium (ISM). We use new ALMA observations to investigate the connection between dense gas fraction, star formation rate, and local environment across the inner region of four local galaxies showing a wide range of molecular gas depletion times. We map HCN (1-0), HCO$^+$ (1-0), CS (2-1), $^{13}$CO (1-0), and C$^{18}$O (1-0) across the inner few kpc of each target. We combine these data with short spacing information from the IRAM large program EMPIRE, archival CO maps, tracers of stellar structure and recent star formation, and recent HCN surveys by Bigiel et al. and Usero et al. We test the degree to which changes in the dense gas fraction drive changes in the SFR. $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ (tracing the dense gas fraction) correlates strongly with $I_{CO}$ (tracing molecular gas surface density), stellar surface density, and dynamical equilibrium pressure, $P_{DE}$. Therefore, $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ becomes very low and HCN becomes very faint at large galactocentric radii, where ratios as low as $I_{HCN}/I_{CO} \sim 0.01$ become common. The apparent ability of dense gas to form stars, $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ (where $\Sigma_{dense}$ is traced by the HCN intensity and the star formation rate is traced by a combination of H$\alpha$ and 24$\mu$m emission), also depends on environment. $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ decreases in regions of high gas surface density, high stellar surface density, and high $P_{DE}$. Statistically, these correlations between environment and both $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ and $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ are stronger than that between apparent dense gas fraction ($I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$) and the apparent molecular gas star formation efficiency $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{mol}$. We compare the structure of molecular gas at $40$ pc resolution to the ability of gas to form stars across the disk of the spiral galaxy M51. We break the PAWS survey into $370$ pc and $1.1$ kpc resolution elements, and within each we estimate the molecular gas depletion time ($\tau_{\rm Dep}^{\rm mol}$), the star formation efficiency per free fall time ($\epsilon_{\rm ff}$), and the mass-weighted cloud-scale (40 pc) properties of the molecular gas: surface density, $\Sigma$, line width, $\sigma$, and $b\equiv\Sigma/\sigma^2\propto\alpha_{\rm vir}^{-1}$, a parameter that traces the boundedness of the gas. We show that the cloud-scale surface density appears to be a reasonable proxy for mean volume density. Applying this, we find a typical star formation efficiency per free-fall time, $\epsilon_{ff} \left( \left< \Sigma_{40pc} \right> \right) \sim 0.3{-}0.36\%$, lower than adopted in many models and found for local clouds. More, the efficiency per free fall time anti-correlates with both $\Sigma$ and $\sigma$, in some tension with turbulent star formation models. The best predictor of the rate of star formation per unit gas mass in our analysis is $b \equiv \Sigma / \sigma^2$, tracing the strength of self gravity, with $\tau_{\rm Dep}^{\rm mol} \propto b^{-0.9}$. The sense of the correlation is that gas with stronger self-gravity (higher $b$) forms stars at a higher rate (low $\tau_{\rm Dep}^{\rm mol}$). The different regions of the galaxy mostly overlap in $\tau_{\rm Dep}^{\rm mol}$ as a function of $b$, so that low $b$ explains the surprisingly high $\tau_{\rm Dep}^{\rm mol}$ found towards the inner spiral arms found by by Meidt et al. NGC 1808 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy which hosts young stellar clusters in a patchy circumnuclear ring with a radius of $\sim 240\,\mathrm{pc}$. In order to study the gaseous and stellar kinematics and the star formation properties of the clusters, we perform seeing-limited $H+K$-band near-infrared integral-field spectroscopy with SINFONI of the inner $\sim 600\,\mathrm{pc}$. From the $M_\mathrm{BH}-\sigma_*$ relation, we find a black hole mass of a few $10^7\,M_\odot$. We estimate the age of the young stellar clusters in the circumnuclear ring to be $\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{Myr}$. No age gradient along the ring is visible. However, the starburst age is comparable to the travel time along the ring, indicating that the clusters almost completed a full orbit along the ring during their life time. In the central $\sim 600\,\mathrm{pc}$, we find a hot molecular gas mass of $\sim 730\,M_\odot$ which, with standard conversion factors, corresponds to a large cold molecular gas reservoir of several $10^8\,M_\odot$, in accordance with CO measurements from the literature. The gaseous and stellar kinematics show several deviations from pure disc motion, including a circumnuclear disc and signs of a nuclear bar potential. In addition, we confirm streaming motions on $\sim 200\,\mathrm{pc}$ scale that have recently been detected in CO(1-0) emission. Due to our enhanced angular resolution of $<1\,\mathrm{arcsec}$, we find further streaming motion within the inner arcsecond, that have not been detected until now. Despite the flow of gas towards the centre, no signs for significant AGN activity are found. We present an analysis of the relationship between the CO-H$_{2}$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) and total mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm tot}$) in star-forming galaxies at $z < 1.5$. Our sample, which is drawn from the IRAM Plateau de Bure HIgh-$z$ Blue Sequence Survey (PHIBSS) and the CO Legacy Database for GASS (COLD GASS), includes 'normal,' massive star-forming galaxies that dominate the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) at this epoch and probe the $\Sigma_{\rm tot}$ regime where the strongest variation in $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is observed. We constrain $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ via existing CO observations, measurements of the star formation rate, and an assumed molecular gas depletion time ($t_{\rm dep}$=$M_{\rm gas}$/SFR) --- the latter two of which establish the total molecular gas mass independent of the observed CO luminosity. For a broad range of adopted depletion times, we find that $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is independent of total mass surface density, with little deviation from the canonical Milky Way value. This runs contrary to a scenario in which $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ decreases as surface density increases within the extended clouds of molecular gas that potentially fuel clumps of star formation in $z\sim1$ galaxies, similar to those observed in local ULIRGs. Instead, our results suggest that molecular gas, both at $z\sim0$ and $z\sim1$, is primarily in the form of self-gravitating molecular clouds. While CO observations suggest a factor of $\sim3$ reduction in the average molecular gas depletion time between $z \sim 0$ and $z\sim1$, we find that, for typical galaxies, the structure of molecular gas and the process of star formation at $z \sim 1$ is otherwise remarkably similar to that observed in local star-forming systems., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 16 pages, 8 figures

Galaxy nuclei are a unique laboratory to study gas flows. High-resolution imaging of the gas flows in galactic nuclei are instrumental in the study of the fueling and the feedback of star formation and nuclear activity in nearby galaxies. Several fueling mechanisms can be now confronted in detail with observations done with state-of-the-art interferometers. Furthermore, the study of gas flows in galactic nuclei can probe the feedback of activity on the interstellar medium of galaxies. Feedback action from star formation and AGN activity is invoked to prevent galaxies from becoming overly massive, but also to explain scaling laws like black hole (BH)-bulge mass correlations and the bimodal color distribution of galaxies. This close relationship between galaxies and their central supermassive BH can be described as co-evolution. There is mounting observational evidence for the existence of gas outflows in different populations of starbursts and active galaxies, a manifestation of the feedback of activity. We present a new survey of HCN(1-0) emission, a tracer of dense molecular gas, focused on the little-explored regime of normal star-forming galaxy disks. Combining HCN, CO, and infrared (IR) emission, we investigate the role of dense gas in Star Formation (SF), finding systematic variations in both the apparent dense gas fraction and the apparent SF efficiency (SFE) of dense gas. The latter may be unexpected, given the popularity of gas density threshold models to explain SF scaling relations. We used the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe HCN(1-0) across 29 nearby disk galaxies whose CO(2-1) emission has previously been mapped by the HERACLES survey. Because our observations span a range of galactocentric radii, we are able to investigate the properties of the dense gas as a function of local conditions. We focus on how the IR/CO, HCN/CO, and IR/HCN ratios (observational cognates of the SFE, dense gas fraction, and dense gas SFE) depend on the stellar surface density and the molecular/atomic ratio. The HCN/CO ratio correlates tightly with these two parameters across a range of 2.1 dex and increases in the high surface density parts of galaxies. Simultaneously, the IR/HCN ratio decreases systematically with these same parameters and is ~6-8 times lower near galaxy centers than in the outer regions. For fixed line-mass conversion factors, these results are incompatible with a simple model in which SF depends only on the gas mass above some density threshold. Only a specific set of environment-dependent conversion factors can render our observations compatible with such a model. Whole cloud models, such as the theory of turbulence regulated SF, do a better job of matching our data. We describe and execute a novel approach to observationally estimate the lifetimes of giant molecular clouds (GMCs). We focus on the cloud population between the two main spiral arms in M51 (the inter-arm region) where cloud destruction via shear and star formation feedback dominates over formation processes. By monitoring the change in GMC number densities and properties from one side of the inter-arm to the other, we estimate the lifetime as a fraction of the inter-arm travel time. We find that GMC lifetimes in M51's inter-arm are finite and short, 20 to 30 Myr. Such short lifetimes suggest that cloud evolution is influenced by environment, in which processes can disrupt GMCs after a few free-fall times. Over most of the region under investigation shear appears to regulate the lifetime. As the shear timescale increases with galactocentric radius, we expect cloud destruction to switch primarily to star formation feedback at larger radii. We identify a transition from shear- to feedback-dominated disruption through a change in the behavior of the GMC number density. The signature suggests that shear is more efficient at completely dispersing clouds, whereas feedback transforms the population, e.g. by fragmenting high mass clouds into lower mass pieces. Compared to the characteristic timescale for molecular hydrogen in M51, our short lifetimes suggest that gas can remain molecular while clouds disperse and reassemble. We propose that galaxy dynamics regulates the cycling of molecular material from diffuse to bound (and ultimately star-forming) objects, contributing to long observed molecular depletion times in normal disk galaxies. We present an analysis of the relation between star formation rate (SFR) surface density (sigmasfr) and mass surface density of molecular gas (sigmahtwo), commonly referred to as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) relation, at its intrinsic spatial scale, i.e. the size of giant molecular clouds (10-150 pc), in the central, high-density regions of four nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We used interferometric IRAM CO(1-0) and CO(2-1), and SMA CO(3-2) emission line maps to derive sigmahtwo and HST-Halpha images to estimate sigmasfr. Each galaxy is characterized by a distinct molecular SF relation at spatial scales between 20 to 200 pc. The K-S relations can be sub-linear, but also super-linear, with slopes ranging from 0.5 to 1.3. Depletion times range from 1 and 2Gyr, compatible with results for nearby normal galaxies. These findings are valid independently of which transition, CO(1-0), CO(2-1), or CO(3-2), is used to derive sigmahtwo. Because of star-formation feedback, life-time of clouds, turbulent cascade, or magnetic fields, the K-S relation might be expected to degrade on small spatial scales (<100 pc). However, we find no clear evidence for this, even on scales as small as 20 pc, and this might be because of the higher density of GMCs in galaxy centers which have to resist higher shear forces. The proportionality between sigmahtwo and sigmasfr found between 10 and 100 Msun/pc2 is valid even at high densities, 10^3 Msun/pc2. The nuclei of merging galaxies are often deeply buried in dense layers of gas and dust. In these regions, gas outflows driven by starburst and AGN activity are believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of these galaxies. However, to fully understand this process it is essential to resolve the morphology and kinematics of such outflows. Using near-IR integral-field spectroscopy obtained with VLT/SINFONI, we detect a kpc-scale structure of high-velocity molecular hydrogen (H2) gas associated with the deeply buried secondary nucleus of the IR-luminous merger NGC3256. We show that this structure is likely the hot component of a molecular outflow, which is detected also in the cold molecular gas by Sakamoto et al. This outflow, with a molecular gas mass of M(H2)~2x10^7 Msun, is among the first to be spatially resolved in both the hot H2 gas with VLT/SINFONI and the cold CO-emitting gas with ALMA. The hot and cold components share a similar morphology and kinematics, with a hot-to-cold molecular gas mass ratio of ~6x10^-5. The high (~100 pc) resolution at which we map the geometry and velocity structure of the hot outflow reveals a biconical morphology with opening angle ~40 deg and gas spread across a FWZI~1200 km/s. Because this collimated outflow is oriented close to the plane of the sky, the molecular gas may reach maximum intrinsic outflow velocities of ~1800 km/s, with an average mass outflow rate of at least ~20 Msun/yr. By modeling the line-ratios of various near-IR H2 transitions, we show that the H2 gas in the outflow is heated through shocks or X-rays to a temperature of ~1900K. The energy needed to drive the outflow is likely provided by a hidden Compton-thick AGN or by the nuclear starburst. We present the results of near-infrared (NIR) H- and K-band European Southern Observatory SINFONI integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1433. We present emission and absorption line measurements in the central kpc of NGC 1433. We detect a narrow Balmer line and several H2 lines. We find that the stellar continuum peaks in the optical and NIR in the same position, indicating that there is no covering of the center by a nuclear dust lane. A strong velocity gradient is detected in all emission lines at that position. The position angle of this gradient is at 155\deg whereas the galactic rotation is at a position angle of 201\deg. Our measures of the molecular hydrogen lines, hydrogen recombination lines, and [Feii] indicate that the excitation at the nucleus is caused by thermal excitation, i.e. shocks which can be associated with active galactic nuclei emission, supernovae or outflows. The line ratios [Feii]/Pa{\beta} and H2/Br{\gamma} show a Seyfert to LINER identification of the nucleus. The stellar continuum is dominated by spectral signatures of red-giant M stars. The stellar line-of-sight velocity follows the galactic field whereas the light continuum follows the nuclear bar. The dynamical center of NGC 1433 coincides with the optical and NIR center of the galaxy and the black hole position. Within the central arcsecond, the molecular hydrogen and the 12CO(3-2) emissions - observed in the NIR and in the sub-millimeter with SINFONI and ALMA, respectively - are indicative for a nuclear outflow originating from the galaxy's SMBH. A small circum nuclear disk cannot be fully excluded. Derived gravitational torques show that the nuclear bar is able to drive gas inwards to scales where viscosity torques and dynamical friction become important. The kinematic complexity and the favorable position of M51 on the sky make this galaxy an ideal target to test different theories of spiral arm dynamics. Taking advantage of the new high resolution PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS) data, we undertake a detailed kinematic study of M51 to characterize and quantify the origin and nature of the non-circular motions. Using a tilted-ring analysis supported by several other archival datasets we update the estimation of M51's position angle (PA=(173 +/- 3) deg) and inclination (i=(22 +/- 5) deg). Harmonic decomposition of the high resolution (40 pc) CO velocity field shows the first kinematic evidence of an m=3 wave in the inner disk of M51 with a corotation at R(CR,m=3)=1.1 +/- 0.1 kpc and a pattern speed of Omega_p(m=3) = 140 km/(s kpc). This mode seems to be excited by the nuclear bar, while the beat frequencies generated by the coupling between the m=3 mode and the main spiral structure confirm its density-wave nature. We observe also a signature of an m=1 mode that is likely responsible for the lopsidedness of M51 at small and large radii. We provide a simple method to estimate the radial variation of the amplitude of the spiral perturbation (Vsp) attributed to the different modes. The main spiral arm structure has =50-70 km/s, while the streaming velocity associated with the m=1 and m=3 modes is, in general, 2 times lower. Our joint analysis of HI and CO velocity fields at low and high spatial resolution reveals that the atomic and molecular gas phases respond differently to the spiral perturbation due to their different vertical distribution and emission morphology., Comment: 42 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using data from the PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS), we have generated the largest extragalactic Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) catalog to date, containing 1,507 individual objects. GMCs in the inner M51 disk account for only 54% of the total 12CO(1-0) luminosity of the survey, but on average they exhibit physical properties similar to Galactic GMCs. We do not find a strong correlation between the GMC size and velocity dispersion, and a simple virial analysis suggests that 30% of GMCs in M51 are unbound. We have analyzed the GMC properties within seven dynamically-motivated galactic environments, finding that GMCs in the spiral arms and in the central region are brighter and have higher velocity dispersions than inter-arm clouds. Globally, the GMC mass distribution does not follow a simple power law shape. Instead, we find that the shape of the mass distribution varies with galactic environment: the distribution is steeper in inter-arm region than in the spiral arms, and exhibits a sharp truncation at high masses for the nuclear bar region. We propose that the observed environmental variations in the GMC properties and mass distributions are a consequence of the combined action of large-scale dynamical processes and feedback from high mass star formation. We compare the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in M51 identified by the Plateau de Bure Interferometer Whirlpool Arcsecond Survey (PAWS) with GMCs identified in wide-field, high resolution surveys of CO emission in M33 and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We find that GMCs in M51 are larger, brighter and have higher velocity dispersions relative to their size than equivalent structures in M33 and the LMC. These differences imply that there are genuine variations in the average mass surface density of the different GMC populations. To explain this, we propose that the pressure in the interstellar medium surrounding the GMCs plays a role in regulating their density and velocity dispersion. We find no evidence for a correlation between size and linewidth in any of M51, M33 or the LMC when the CO emission is decomposed into GMCs, although moderately robust correlations are apparent when regions of contiguous CO emission (with no size limitation) are used. Our work demonstrates that observational bias remains an important obstacle to the identification and study of extragalactic GMC populations using CO emission, especially in molecule-rich galactic environments., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. (Abridged) The role of low ionization nuclear emission region (LINER) galaxies within the picture of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been controversial. It is still not clear whether they host an AGN in a low accretion mode, or whether they are not active at all but dominated by alternative ionization mechanisms, namely shocks, winds/outflows, or photoionization by a post asymptotic giant branch (p-AGB) stellar population. The detection of extended LINER-like emission was often taken as evidence of ionization by stellar components but this has not been undisputed. We performed optical integral field spectroscopic observations on the central approx. 4 kpc of NGC 5850 using VIMOS at the VLT, which provides spatially-resolved spectra for the gas emission and the stellar continuum. We derive and analyse emission line and kinematic maps. We find the central few kpc of NGC 5850 to be dominated by extended LINER-like emission. The emission-line ratios that are sensitive to the ionization parameter increase with radial distance to the nucleus. Therefore, the extended LINER-like emission in NGC 5850 is dominated by ionization from distributed ionization sources, probably by stars on the p-AGB. The LINER-like region is surrounded by emission that is classed as 'composite', likely due to a mixture of a LINER-like ionization pattern and photoionization by low-level star formation. Two star-forming regions are present in the 21"x19" field of view. One of them is located approximately in the ring surrounding the kinematically decoupled core. The second one is close to the nucleus and is the origin of a region of decreased emission line ratios oriented radially outwards. We find the interstellar gas to have areas of steep velocity gradients and a complex kinematic morphology, probably caused by the lopsided (m=1) distribution of the gas. We use the high spatial and spectral resolution of the PAWS CO(1-0) survey of the inner 9 kpc of the iconic spiral galaxy M51 to examine the effect of gas streaming motions on the star-forming properties of individual GMCs. We compare our view of gas flows in M51 -- which arise due to departures from axi-symmetry in the gravitational potential (i.e. the nuclear bar and spiral arms) -- with the global pattern of star formation as traced by Halpha and 24\mu m emission. We find that the dynamical environment of GMCs strongly affects their ability to form stars, in the sense that GMCs situated in regions with large streaming motions can be stabilized, while similarly massive GMCs in regions without streaming go on to efficiently form stars. We argue that this is the result of reduced surface pressure felt by clouds embedded in an ambient medium undergoing large streaming motions, which prevents collapse. Indeed, the variation in gas depletion time expected based on the observed streaming motions throughout the disk of M51 quantitatively agrees with the variation in observed gas depletion time scale. The example of M51 shows that streaming motions, triggered by gravitational instabilities in the form of bars and spiral arms, can alter the star formation law; this can explain the variation in gas depletion time among galaxies with different masses and morphologies. In particular, we can explain the long gas depletion times in spiral galaxies compared to dwarf galaxies and starbursts. We suggest that adding a dynamical pressure term to the canonical free-fall time produces a single star formation law that can be applied to all star-forming regions and galaxies, across cosmic time., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The PdBI (Plateau de Bure Interferometer) Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS) has mapped the molecular gas in the central ~9kpc of M51 in its 12CO(1-0) line emission at cloud-scale resolution of ~40pc using both IRAM telescopes. We utilize this dataset to quantitatively characterize the relation of molecular gas (or CO emission) to other tracers of the interstellar medium (ISM), star formation and stellar populations of varying ages. Using 2-dimensional maps, a polar cross-correlation technique and pixel-by-pixel diagrams, we find: (a) that (as expected) the distribution of the molecular gas can be linked to different components of the gravitational potential, (b) evidence for a physical link between CO line emission and radio continuum that seems not to be caused by massive stars, but rather depend on the gas density, (c) a close spatial relation between the PAH and molecular gas emission, but no predictive power of PAH emission for the molecular gas mass,(d) that the I-H color map is an excellent predictor of the distribution (and to a lesser degree the brightness) of CO emission, and (e) that the impact of massive (UV-intense) young star-forming regions on the bulk of the molecular gas in central ~9kpc can not be significant due to a complex spatial relation between molecular gas and star-forming regions that ranges from co-spatial to spatially offset to absent. We analyse the distribution of CO brightness temperature and integrated intensity in M51 at ~40 pc resolution using new CO data from the Plateau de Bure Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS). We present probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the CO emission within the PAWS field, which covers the inner 11 x 7 kpc of M51. We find variations in the shape of CO PDFs within different M51 environments, and between M51 and M33 and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Globally, the PDFs for the inner disk of M51 can be represented by narrow lognormal functions that cover 1 to 2 orders of magnitude in CO brightness and integrated intensity. The PDFs for M33 and the LMC are narrower and peak at lower CO intensities. However, the CO PDFs for different dynamical environments within the PAWS field depart from the shape of the global distribution. The PDFs for the interarm region are approximately lognormal, but in the spiral arms and central region of M51, they exhibit diverse shapes with a significant excess of bright CO emission. The observed environmental dependence of the shape of the CO PDFs is qualitatively consistent with changes that would be expected if molecular gas in the spiral arms has a larger range of average densities, gas temperatures and velocity fluctuations, though further work is required to disentangle the importance of large-scale dynamical effects versus star formation feedback in regulating these properties. We show that the shape of the CO PDFs for different M51 environments is only weakly related to global properties of the CO emission, but is strongly correlated with some properties of the local giant molecular cloud (GMC) and young stellar cluster populations. What are the main drivers of activity in the local universe? Observations have been instrumental in identifying the mechanisms responsible for fueling activity in galaxy nuclei. In this context we summarize the main results of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) survey. The aim of NUGA is to map, at high resolution and high sensitivity, the distribution and dynamics of the molecular gas in the central kiloparsec region of 25 galaxies, and to study the different mechanisms responsible for gas fueling of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGN). Gas flows in NUGA maps reveal a wide range of instabilities. The derived gravity torque maps show that only about 1/3 of NUGA galaxies show evidence of ongoing fueling. Secular evolution and dynamical decoupling are seen to be key ingredients to understand the AGN fueling cycle. To examine the role of the host galaxy structure in fueling nuclear activity, we estimated gas flow rates from several kpc down to the inner few 10 pc for seven nearby spiral galaxies, selected from the NUGA sample (NUclei of GAlaxies). We calculated gravitational torques from near-IR images and determined gas in/out-flow rates as a function of radius and location within the galactic disks, based on high angular resolution interferometric observations of molecular (CO using PdBI) and atomic (HI using the VLA) gas. The results are compared with kinematic evidence for radial gas flows and the dynamical state of the galaxies (via resonances) derived from several different methods. We show that gravitational torques are very efficient at transporting gas from the outer disk all the way into the galaxies centers at ~100 pc; previously assumed dynamical barriers to gas transport, such as the Corotation Resonance of stellar bars, seem to be overcome by gravitational torque induced gas flows from other non-axisymmmetric structures. The resulting rates of gas mass inflow range from 0.01 to 50 solar masses per year and are larger for the galaxy center than for the outer disk. Our gas flow maps show the action of nested bars within larger bars for 3 galaxies. Non-circular streaming motions found in the kinematic maps are larger in the center than in the outer disk and appear to correlate only loosely with the in/out-flow rates as a function of radius. We demonstrate that spiral gas disks are very dynamic systems that undergo strong radial evolution on timescales of a few rotation periods (e.g. 5 times 10^8 yrs at a radius of 5 kpc), due to the effectiveness of gravitational torques in redistributing the cold galactic gas., Comment: 83 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ.
