Fossils of the Ediacara Biota preserve the oldest evidence for complex, macroscopic animals. Most are difficult to constrain phylogenetically, however, the presence of rare, derived groups suggests that many more fossils from this period represent extant groups than are currently appreciated. One approach to recognize such early animals is to instead focus on characteristics widespread in animals today, for example multicellularity, motility, and axial polarity. Here, we describe a new taxon, Quaestio simpsonorum gen. et sp. nov. from the Ediacaran of South Australia. Quaestio is reconstructed with a thin external membrane connecting more resilient tissues with anterior‐posterior polarity, left‐right asymmetry and tentative evidence for dorsoventral differentiation. Associated trace fossils indicate an epibenthic and motile lifestyle. Our results suggest that Quaestio was a motile eumetazoan with a body plan not previously recognized in the Ediacaran, including definitive evidence of chirality. This organization, combined with previous evidence for axial patterning in a variety of other Ediacara taxa, demonstrates that metazoan body plans were well established in the Precambrian. The Emu Bay Shale (EBS) of South Australia is anomalous among Cambrian Lagerstätten because it captures anatomical information that is rare in Burgess Shale-type fossils, and because of its inferred nearshore setting, the nature of which has remained controversial. Intensive study, combining outcrop and borehole data with a compilation of >25,000 fossil specimens, reveals that the EBS biota inhabited a fan delta complex within a tectonically active basin. Preservation of soft-bodied organisms in this setting is unexpected and further underscores differences between the EBS and other Cambrian Lagerstätten. Environmental conditions, including oxygen fluctuations, slope instability, high suspended sediment concentrations, and episodic high-energy events, inhibited colonization of the lower prodelta by all but a few specialist species but favored downslope transportation and preservation of other largely endemic, shallow-water benthos. The EBS provides extraordinary insight into early Cambrian animal diversity from Gondwana. The Late Ordovician Tafilalt Biota of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas includes a diverse range of soft-bodied organisms, including palaeoscolecids, paropsonemid eldonioids, graptolites and cheloniellid arthropods, as well as a rich assemblage of mineralised taxa, among them conulariids, trilobites and echinoderms, often found as articulated skeletons. The new fossil locality, not far from the original Bou Nemrou site, has produced two new palaeoscolecid taxa, the new genus and species Anguiscolex africanus and the new species Wronascolex superstes. They are preserved as compression fossils in fine-grained mudstones, where the original phosphatic sclerites have been diagenetically substituted by pyrite and later weathered to iron oxides, giving them a characteristic rusty colour. This area of Gondwana was located adjacent to the Late Ordovician South Pole and both Anguiscolex africanus gen. et sp. nov. and Wronascolex superstes sp. nov. present a degree of polar gigantism, which has been suggested for other taxa in such high palaeolatitudes such as bryozoans, conulariids, trilobites and radiodonts. Lastly, the occurrence of Wronascolex extends the distribution of this typically Cambrian taxon into the Late Ordovician, indicating a total range for the genus exceeding 60 million years, more than any other palaeoscolecid genus described to date. Eoandromeda octobrachiata is a poorly understood Ediacaran organism, with spiral octoradial arms, found in South Australia and South China. The informal Nilpena member of the Rawnsley Quartzite, Flinders Ranges in South Australia preserves more than 200 specimens of Eoandromeda. Here we use the novel application of rotational geometric morphometrics together with palaeoenvironmental information to provide a better insight into their palaeobiology and ecology, and to address conflicting hypotheses regarding mode of life and taxonomic affinity. We find that Eoandromeda probably had a radially symmetrical shape in life, was cone shaped and had a high relief off the microbial mat. Analysis of the symmetric and asymmetric shape components showed that they deform strongly in the direction of palaeocurrent, therefore they are thought to be made of a flexible material. Almost all specimens are compressed flat. Specimens that appear to have not fully collapsed support the idea that Eoandromeda was probably cone shaped and suggest that they possibly collapsed spirally. Our shape analysis, along with observed morphological features, support a benthic rather than pelagic mode of life. A large enigmatic fossil is described from the early Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 3) Heatherdale Shale in the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. It has an almost circular outline about 150 mm across, with an outer rim and 27–30 evenly-spaced rays that extend about two-thirds of the distance to the centre of the structure; it shows radial symmetry. There is a featureless central area with a width about one-third that of the entire specimen. The fossil is preserved as pale-coloured material that stands out slightly above the surrounding mudstone. XRF data indicate that there is little compositional difference between the fossil and the enclosing rock. The fossil may appear to be a transverse section of a larger organism, but it does not continue down into the surrounding rock. This suggests it is a non-mineralised compression fossil that retains the remnants of a three-dimensional structure. Possible affinities with radiodont oral cones, ctenophores, eldonioids, scyphozoa and archaeocyaths are discussed, but no definite assignment can be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New fossils from Australia reveal that the Cambrian apex predator Anomalocaris possessed compound eyes more powerful than those of most living arthropods. A sharp-eyed Cambrian predator The metre-long swimming invertebrate Anomalocaris was the top predator in the Cambrian ocean more than 500 million years ago. Recent discoveries of fly-like compound eyes attributable to this creature confirm suggestions that it is related to the arthropods -- jointed-limbed creatures such as insects, crustaceans and trilobites -- and show that compound eyes evolved before hardened exoskeletons. The superbly preserved fossils from South Australia show that Anomalocaris had exceptional vision. Its compound eyes are among the largest and most acute to have ever existed; each eye is up to 3 centimetres long and contains more than 16,000 lenses. The existence of highly visual hunters during the Cambrian would have accelerated the pace of the predator-prey 'arms race' then under way. Until recently.sup.1, intricate details of the optical design of non-biomineralized arthropod eyes remained elusive in Cambrian Burgess-Shale-type deposits, despite exceptional preservation of soft-part anatomy in such Konservat-Lagerstätten.sup.2,3. The structure and development of ommatidia in arthropod compound eyes support a single origin some time before the latest common ancestor of crown-group arthropods.sup.4, but the appearance of compound eyes in the arthropod stem group has been poorly constrained in the absence of adequate fossils. Here we report 2-3-cm paired eyes from the early Cambrian (approximately 515 million years old) Emu Bay Shale of South Australia, assigned to the Cambrian apex predator Anomalocaris. Their preserved visual surfaces are composed of at least 16,000 hexagonally packed ommatidial lenses (in a single eye), rivalling the most acute compound eyes in modern arthropods. The specimens show two distinct taphonomic modes, preserved as iron oxide (after pyrite) and calcium phosphate, demonstrating that disparate styles of early diagenetic mineralization can replicate the same type of extracellular tissue (that is, cuticle) within a single Burgess-Shale-type deposit. These fossils also provide compelling evidence for the arthropod affinities of anomalocaridids, push the origin of compound eyes deeper down the arthropod stem lineage, and indicate that the compound eye evolved before such features as a hardened exoskeleton. The inferred acuity of the anomalocaridid eye is consistent with other evidence that these animals were highly mobile visual predators in the water column.sup.5,6. Studies that reveal detailed information about trilobite growth, particularly early developmental stages, are crucial for improving our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within this iconic group of fossil arthropods. Here we document an essentially complete ontogeny of the trilobite Redlichia cf. versabunda from the Cambrian Series 2 (late Stage 4) Ramsay Limestone of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, including some of the best-preserved protaspides (the earliest biomineralized trilobite larval stage) known for any Cambrian trilobite. These protaspid stages exhibit similar morphological characteristics to many other taxa within the Suborder Redlichiina, especially to closely related species such as Metaredlichia cylindrica from the early Cambrian period of China. Morphological patterns observed across early developmental stages of different groups within the Order Redlichiida are discussed. Although redlichiine protaspides exhibit similar overall morphologies, certain ontogenetic characters within this suborder have potential phylogenetic signal, with different superfamilies characterized by unique trait combinations in these early growth stages. Trilobites are one of the most diverse and abundant fossil groups from the early Palaeozoic, and as such are useful for answering important questions about early animal evolution, including developmental processes. Ontogenetic information for a large number of trilobite species has been published, but cases where multiple articulated specimens are known across the full range of developmental stages are rare. The early Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 4) Emu Bay Shale biota from Kangaroo Island (South Australia) is numerically dominated by trilobites, particularly articulated specimens of the ellipsocephaloid Estaingia bilobata, which are present in densities of >600 individuals per square metre on certain bedding planes. Here we describe the essentially complete post‐embryonic ontogenetic series of E. bilobata from the Emu Bay Shale, and investigate patterns of growth relating to articulation and segmentation in this early Cambrian arthropod. Estaingia bilobata exhibits the hypoprotomeric mode of growth, with the epimorphic phase (the cessation of trunk segment generation) reached prior to the onset of the holaspid period. The meraspid pygidium had an extended equilibrium period in which anterior segment release into the thorax was matched by subterminal segment generation. Previously undocumented morphological features of E. bilobata, including the hypostome and bispinose pleural tips in holaspides, are also described. The growth characteristics and morphological features of E. bilobata documented herein strengthen close phylogenetic relationships between the Estaingiidae, Ellipsocephalidae and Xystriduridae. The trilobite Redlichia Cossmann, 1902 is an abundant element of the lower Cambrian (Series 2, Stage 4) Emu Bay Shale (EBS) Konservat-Lagerstätte on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Well-preserved, fully articulated specimens from this deposit are known to reach lengths of up to 25 cm, representing one of the largest known Cambrian trilobites. Until now, all Redlichia specimens from the EBS have been referred to Redlichia takooensis Lu, 1950, a species originally described from South China. Previous work recognized considerable differences in exoskeletal morphology among specimens of varying sizes, which was attributed to ontogeny. However, close examination of a large collection of recently acquired specimens shows that this variation actually represents two distinct morphs, interpreted here as separate species: R. takooensis, and a large, new species, Redlichia rex sp. nov. An analysis of morphological variation in holaspides ('adults') of the more common R. takooensis reveals considerable ontogenetic change occurred even during this later phase of growth. Some specimens of both Redlichia species from the EBS also exhibit exceptionally preserved soft-part anatomy, particularly the antennae and biramous appendages. Here, appendages (antenniform and biramous) and digestive structures are described, and biramous appendage reconstructions of R. rex sp. nov. are presented, which show a striking resemblance to some early Cambrian trilobites from South China. In particular, R. rex has a tripartite exopodite, as well as a dorsoventrally deep protopodite with gnathobasic spines used to shred or crush food items. Based on recent phylogenetic analyses, it is possible that an exopodite with tripartite subdivisions represents the plesiomorphic condition for Artiopoda (trilobites and kin). The digestive system of R. takooensis exhibits a series of paired digestive glands in the cephalon and anterior thorax, similar to those described for a number of other Cambrian and Ordovician trilobites.
