Abstract

Following global trends, research to determine the presence and abundance of microplastics (MPs) in environmental matrices in Colombia has focused on the coastal and marine environments. However, little scientific information is available on the impact of this pollutant on wetlands and fish. In this study, we provided scientific data on the occurrence and abundance of MPs in water and fish from Tocagua Lake, an important wetland in the Colombian Caribbean, and the unique habitat of wild cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus). Water (72) and fish (228 individuals of six species) samples were collected during four sampling events and two climatic seasons (wet and dry). A total of 1174 microplastic particles were collected in water with an average abundance of microplastics at the six stations sampled during four sampling events of 0.96 ± 0.40 MPs/L, and 648 MPs were identified in the gastrointestinal tract of 191 individuals, corresponding to a frequency of occurrence of 83.7%. Black- and blue-colored fiber MPs were particles that predominated in both matrices (water and fish), and seven types of polymers were identified through attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. 11. Phlebotomine fauna and the first record of Lutzomyia aclydifera (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the Colombian Caribbean

Abstract

One of the most important leishmaniasis foci in Colombia is Los Montes de María, Department of Bolívar, specifically in El Carmen de Bolívar. To date, 19 species of Lutzomyia have been recognized in this department, some with antecedents as vectors of Leishmania spp. This note reports the abundance and diversity of the phlebotomine sandflies fauna in the rural area of El Carmen de Bolívar. Through the use of CDC traps, 1327 females of the genus Lutzomyia were collected between January to November 2018: Lu. evansi (81 %), Lu. panamensis (15.5 %), Lu. gomezi (2.9 %), Lu. dubitans (0.15 %), Lu. aclydifera (0.07 %), Lu. c. cayennensis (0.07 %), Lu. rangeliana (0.07 %) and Lu. serrana (0.07 %). The highest abundance of sandflies occurred in November and the lowest in April, which is consistent with the rainy and dry months, respectively; while in January there was the greatest diversity. In this research, stands out Lu. evansi, Lu. panamensis and Lu. gomezi for their antecedents as vectors of Leishmania in the Department of Bolívar and other regions of the country. We reported the species Lu. aclydifera for the first time for the Caribbean region, hence, this species should be monitored given its vector capacity for Leishmania., Uno de los focos de leishmaniasis más importante de Colombia está en Los Montes de María, Departamento de Bolívar, específicamente en El Carmen de Bolívar. A la fecha están registradas 19 especies del género Lutzomyia, en este departamento, algunas con antecedentes como vectores de Leishmania spp. La presente nota informa la abundancia y la diversidad de la flebotominofauna en la zona rural de El Carmen de Bolívar. Mediante el uso de trampas de CDC, se colectaron 1327 hembras del género Lutzomyia entre enero a noviembre de 2018: Lu. evansi (81 %), Lu. panamensis (15,5 %), Lu. gomezi (2,9 %), Lu. dubitans (0,15 %), Lu. aclydifera (0,07 %), Lu. c. cayennensis (0,07 %), Lu. rangeliana (0,07 %) y Lu. serrana (0,07 %). La mayor abundancia de flebotomíneos se presentó en noviembre y la menor en abril, coincidiendo con los meses de lluvia y sequía, respectivamente; mientras que en enero se presentó la mayor diversidad. En esta investigación sobresalen Lu. evansi, Lu. panamensis y Lu. gomezi por sus antecedentes como vectores de Leishmania en el Departamento de Bolívar y otras regiones del país. Se reporta por primera vez para el Caribe Colombiano la especie Lu. aclydifera, la cual deberá ser vigilada en cuanto a su capacidad vectorial para Leishmania.

Abstract

Estudiantes de Montería, Barranquilla, Bogotá, Santa Marta, Sincelejo, y Bucaramanga participaron activamente en el Caribe Microbial Meeting 2018 – CaMM 2018 organizado por Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar, Universidad Metropolitana, Universidad Libre seccional Barranquilla, Universidad Simón Bolívar y Universidad San Buenaventura. El evento contó con la participación de 129 asistentes, entre los que se cuentan empleados de varias empresas de la ciudad. En la reunión se presentaron 24 posters, 10 ponencias orales y 2 ponencias magistrales. CaMM buscaba conectar y fortalecer los lazos de trabajo de investigadores jóvenes en el área de microbiología, además de generar un espacio para facilitar el intercambio de conocimiento, iniciativas de investigación, desarrollo e innovación a la comunidad académica en el área de microbiología. Las dos conferencias magistrales estuvieron a cargo de ilustres ponentes. El Dr. Roberto Kolter, profesor emérito de Microbiología de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard, en Estados Unidos, abrió CaMM 2018 con la conferencia titulada Una breve historia de los antibióticos. Por su parte, la Dra. María Mercedes Zambrano, directora científica de Corpogen y docente de la Facultad de Ciencias Básicas de la Universidad de los Andes, tuvo a cargo la clausura con la conferencia titulada Diversidad microbiana y bioprospección. El evento buscaba promover la cultura de investigación y la integración de los distintos actores: investigadores, estudiantes, profesionales, universidades y asociaciones, con el fin de generar un espacio de reflexión y debate, para la inserción de la I+D+i como alternativa de solución a las problemáticas de la región Caribe, la transferencia tecnológica en los sectores productivos y la conformación de redes de conocimiento; además de contribuir al fortalecimiento de los grupos y semilleros de investigación de la Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar.

15. Triatoma maculata, the Vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, in Venezuela. Phenotypic and Genotypic Variability as Potential Indicator of Vector Displacement into the Domestic Habitat.

Abstract

Triatoma maculata is a wild vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease; its incursion in the domestic habitat is scant. In order to establish the possible domestic habitat of T. maculata, we evaluated wing variability and polymorphism of genotypic markers in subpopulations of T. maculata that live in different habitats in Venezuela. As markers, we used the mtCyt b gene, previously apply to evaluate population genetic structure in triatomine species, and the β-tubulin gene region, a marker employed to study genetic variability in Leishmania subgenera. Adults of T. maculata were captured in the period 2012-2013 at domestic, peridomestic (PD), and wild areas of towns in the Venezuelan states of Anzoátegui, Bolívar, Portuguesa, Monagas, Nueva Esparta, and Sucre. The phenotypic analysis was conducted through the determination of the isometric size and conformation of the left wing of each insect (492 individuals), using the MorphoJ program. Results reveal that insects of the domestic habitat showed significant reductions in wing size and variations in anatomical characteristics associated with flying, in relation to the PD and wild habitats. The largest variability was found in Anzoátegui and Monagas. The genotypic variability was assessed by in silico sequence comparison of the molecular markers and PCR-RFLP assays, demonstrating a marked polymorphism for the markers in insects of the domestic habitat in comparison with the other habitats. The highest polymorphism was found for the β-tubulin marker with enzymes BamHI and KpnI. Additionally, the infection rate by T. cruzi was higher in Monagas and Sucre (26.8 and 37.0%, respectively), while in domestic habitats the infestation rate was highest in Anzoátegui (22.3%). Results suggest domestic habitat colonization by T. maculata that in epidemiological terms, coupled with the presence in this habitat of nymphs of the vector, represents a high risk of transmission of Chagas disease.
