SOCIAL network analysis , *SPATIAL arrangement , *HUNTING equipment , *SOCIAL networks , *SOCIAL interaction - Abstract
In this paper, we concentrate on the neolithisation process in Mediterranean Iberia through a diachronic view (from 8600–6800 cal. BP), focusing on social interaction as a factor in articulating new cultural ties. To do this, we apply techniques centred on similarities in material culture by applying Social Network Analysis (SNA). For the first time, we point to the geometric projectiles, taking into account their recurrence in both Mesolithic and Neolithic groups as part of their characteristic hunting equipment. We hypothesise that patterns of cultural variability would express the changing flow of information between communities according to their mobility strategies (last hunter-gatherer groups), including economic and social behaviour, and that these relationships will be restructured with the arrival of the newcomer farmers and herders and their new spatial and social arrangement. The results obtained allow us to describe a connected and homogeneous Late Mesolithic network dramatically structured by the Neolithic arrival. Since then, a heterogenous pattern emerged, involving connected periods, network ruptures, and small-world phenomena. The emergence of this characteristic could support the flow of information when the network presents a clustered structure, the last probably due to regionalisation events. These diachronic dynamics fit well with demographic and socioecological trends observed from regional literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the main economic activity during the Mesolithic levels at the cavity was goat hunting. Recent research conducted in the framework of the current fieldwork has allowed to identify the presence of malacological and fishing marine remains contributing to better understand the seasonal use of the site considering innercoastal movements. In this work we present the personal ornaments elaborated from mollusks, in great part unpublished, that has been documented in the different fieldworks conducted by Lluís Pericot in the 40th of the last century. The revision of the collection in the Museu de Prehistòria de Valencia allow us to identify eight marine species (tow bivalves, five gastropods and one scaphopoda) and also one continental taxa. At this point, the main relevance corresponds to collumbella rustica with more than 300 remains. At the moment, the malacological personal ornament from Cueva de la Cocina constitutes the largest assemblage attributed to the final Mesolithic in the Mediterranean Iberia.

Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula ,Geometric microliths ,Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) - Abstract
In the present article we use geometric microliths (a specific type of arrowhead) and Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) in order to evaluate possible origin points and expansion routes for the Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. In order to do so, we divide the Iberian Peninsula in four areas (Ebro river, Catalan shores, Xu´quer river and Guadalquivir river) and we sample the geometric microliths existing in the sites with the oldest radiocarbon dates for each zone. On this data, we perform a partial Mantel test with three matrices: geographic distance matrix, cultural distance matrix and chronological distance matrix. After this is done, we simulate a series of partial Mantel tests where we alter the chronological matrix by using an expansion model with randomised origin points, and using the distribution of the observed partial Mantel test’s results as a summary statistic within an Approximate Bayesian Computation-Sequential Monte-Carlo (ABC-SMC) algorithm framework. Our results point clearly to a Neolithic expansion route following the Northern Mediterranean, whilst the Southern Mediterranean route could also find support and should be further discussed. The most probable origin points focus on the Xu´quer river area.

X-ray fluorescence , *INDUCTIVELY coupled plasma mass spectrometry , *CHERT - Abstract
The present work represents the first attempt using an archaeometric approach to characterize the potential chert outcrops and retrace the provenance of the chert raw materials in the Mesolithic and Neolithic contexts of the Eastern Iberia central site of Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia). Therefore, a research project aimed at identifying and characterizing potential sources in the surroundings of the site was carried out, as a first step, to test some hypotheses related to raw material provenance. Elemental profiles of several archaeological artifacts and of geological samples collected in different local and nonlocal outcrops were obtained using X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. These chemical data were processed using multivariate statistics to investigate the possible links between the outcrops and archaeological artifacts. Preliminary results point to the use of local raw materials and also the presence of rocks outcropping in a perimeter of more than 50 km around Cueva de la Cocina, opening a new window to investigate the socioecological dynamics of the last hunter‐gatherer and the first farmer inhabitants from a diachronic point of view in this region. Newcastle upon Tyne : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2020, p. 49-61. ISBN 978-1-5275-4226-6., Studies on the function of the lithic tools of the last hunter-gatherer communities in the Western Mediterranean are very scarce. However, in recent decades, research carried out by both archaeologists and traceologists has partially filled this gap with new excavations and new analysis of both Early and Late Mesolithic assemblages. Today, we can talk of the existence of a real "Mesolithic toolkit", formed by a series of formal tools that were used in a more or less common way all over the Western Mediterranean; some of the most typical implements are microlithic trapezes and notched blades and flakes. This chapter analyses differences and similitudes, on a functional and technological level, between assemblages from the eastern Iberian Península and North of Morocco.

Ancient DNA ,Prehistory ,Genética - Congresos ,Genomics ,Population Genetics ,Iberian Peninsula - Abstract
The lberian Península provides an excellent context in which to assess the final impact of population movements entering the European continent from the east as well as prehistoric and historie connections with North Africa. We report new genome-wide data from 271 ancient individuals from Iberia, providing the most comprehensive genetic time transect of any world region over the last 8,000 years. We document population structure in the peninsula's hunter-gatherers, with northwestern but not southeastern individuals showing increased genetic affinity to central European hunter-gatherers in the centuries befare the arrival of farmers. We provide evidence of sporadic contacts from North Africa beginning at least -4,500 years ago, and by -4,000 years ago the replacement of -40% of the autosomal ancestry and 100% of the Y-chromosomes of Bronze Age groups by migrants ultimately originating in the steppe. From the lron Age, we report genome-wide data from individuals excavated in non-lndo-European speaking regions and show that they were genetically similar to contemporaries from an lndo-European-speaking region in harboring substantial proportions of steppe ancestry. With the exception of Basques who remain broadly similar to lron Age populations, during the past 2,500 years lberian populations were affected by additional gene-flow from the central/eastern Mediterranean region, probably associated with the Roman conques!, and from North Africa during the period of Muslim rule but also in earlier periods. Cocina Cave was excavated for the rst time by Llu s Pericot during the 1940s of the XX century. Due to the archaeological methodology followed at the time, some problems may arise for the sake of today's needed accuracy. The main goals of the team of the University of Valencia currently working at the site are not just providing a more detailed stratigraphic frame, but also to better understand how human and taphonomic processes are reflected in old excavations. By using some new methodologies, such as virtual 3D reconstruction, we have been able to figure out how some natural processes are deployed through Pericot's deposit. By observing the XYZ distribution of di erent types of snails {some of which belong to fresh-water habitats and others to terrestrial habitats{ through the stratigraphic record we have been able to identify flood episodes a ffecting the stratigraphy of the site. A logical next step is to proceed to the XYZ distribution of anthropological material (i.e. lithic industry). In this present communication we would like to present the results of the comparison between the afore mentioned natural deposition processes and human deposition rates, all this embedded into a chronological framework refi ned through a bayesian approach. This comparison will be deployed not only from an XY point of view, but also from a Z point of view. Analytical statistics will be implemented in order to better understand the record. Our goal is to fi nd out what (or how much) influence have natural processes had in the construction of the archaeological assemblage. Also, one of our main objectives is seeing how human distribution rates behave regarding the understanding of our archaeological record, so that we can check if a more accurate layer discrimination -and, therefore, a better understanding of the dynamics of the cave- is possible.

The neolithisation process in Europe constitutes a fundamental issue of interest in social evolutionary studies. The pioneer work of Ammerman and Cavalli-Sforza (1984) has been considered the basis for discussing the mechanisms involved in the expansion of farming and herding practices in a continental scale, assuming their spread from the Near East domestic core area. From an evolutionary perspective the introduction of agriculture and livestock implies major shifts in social dynamics including changes in demographic patterns as well as in settlement distribution and cultural models. Spatial analysis together with the use of radiocarbon data as a demographic proxy maybe one of the keys to better understand population dynamics involved in the neolithisation process. We compare if the evidence of domestic plants and animals expansion through central and western Mediterranean fit with the summed calibrated radiocarbon probability distributions (SCPD) calculated for the whole area and if the same is true for regional areas. We try to overcome the limits of the SCPD method that have criticized like sometime as imprecise and others as biased because we believe that, despite criticism, summed calibrated radiocarbon probabilities are the bare bone of any well funded paleo demographic approach to the arrival to the agriculture way of life to central and western Mediterranean. - Abstract
Mobility range and territorial control are central questions for Archaeology in the study of human groups’ life during Prehistoric Ages. A key point to get to grips with this set of problems is to understand the dynamics of supply of natural resources such as food and raw materials. Thus, the identification of the outcrops of chert and their characterisation is essential, due to the use of this particular rock as raw material for the production of several different tools. Since the nakedeye description of stone characters (colour, translucency, presence of carbonatation or patina, etc.) often lacks to identify different outcrops and to determine the provenance of a sample, in the last decades, scientists have tried to develop methods to improve the characterisation of this rock from the chemical, mineralogical and petrographic point of view [1,2]. This contribution shows the study of some chert varieties which were widely used since the Paleolithic by the inhabitants of the valley of Serpis river [3], in the southern part of the Valencian Community. Forty-three samples of Serrat, Mariola and Serreta chert were collected from different kinds of outcrops: from the wall rock, and from fluvial and colluvial deposits. The cortex or crust and the nucleus of each sample were mechanically separated and individually analysed to control the variability caused by the amount of cortex and consequently to develop a methodological approach that permits to identify different chert sources in a restricted area. For this purpose, Xray fluorescence and Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses have been carried out to determine major elements, trace elements and rare earth elements [4] of cherts affected by different depositional and post-depositional conditions. - Abstract
Rare earth elements (REE) have been employed in a variety of different scenarios in order to identify the natural or anthropogenic nature of archaeological soils [1,2] . In this study, REE signatures were employed to better understand the layers formation in a cavity called Cocina cave, a large cavity of 300 m2 located at Barranco de la Ventana, one of the ravines flowing southwards from La Canal valley, a little plateau located in the municipality of Dos Aguas (Valencia, Spain). Cocina cave is characterized of very homogenous sediment deposition where it is difficult to understand layers formation processes just employing the traditional archaeological methods and the standardized soil analyses. The archaeological sequence encompasses last hunter-gatherer Holocene occupations in the regional sequence (Mesolithic) followed by several levels attributed to the Neolithic, Bronze Age and historic occupations until the XX century, these last regarding the use of the cavity as a pen. In order to understand the development history of the strata and the anthropogenic or natural formation of soils a total of fifty samples were taken across six different sections (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) and from each section the sampling was carried out at different depths through 1-2m deep sections. All samples were recovered from current pits excavated at the cavity corresponding with some profiles that encompass different strata including natural deposits and hunter and penning activities together with other possible uses not well defined from archaeological data. Several radiocarbon dates confirm the anthropogenic use of the cavity from the IX millennium cal BP to the contemporary times. Major, minor and trace elements including REE were determined employing XRF and ICP- MS. Results were then statistically processed and cross-referenced with archaeological data to aid interpretation. The results show that REE provide interesting details regarding the strata development history, and therefore help archaeologists to better understand the occupation, use and abandonment phases of the cave. [EN] In this paper we present our procedure for digitising fieldwork information on the fly (data management), and its combination with the virtual reconstruction of the stratigraphy (virtualisation), of the Cueva de la Cocina site in Dos Aguas (Valencia, Spain). The main tool for the Geographic Information System (GIS) implementation has been OpenJUMP, whilst for the three-dimensional (3D) recreation of the cave virtual environment MeshLab, ParaView, CloudCompare and R open software have been used. According to the data recovered during the two last field seasons at the cave -2015 and 2016-, we present the current state of the stratigraphy virtualisation in the excavated sectors. We also provide not only a general view of the cave, but also different points of view to incorporate distinct geomatics tools into archaeological research. The computer treatment of the data collected in the field provides a better understanding of their spatial relations; which in turn facilitates its analysis and interpretation as well as the realisation of virtual profiles. In the same way, the differences in the frequency of materials belonging to adjacent and/or superimposed stratigraphical units, as well as the total quantities, volumetry and density of the artefacts, with respect to their own stratigraphical unit, or even the whole excavated area, can also be analysed. The combination of both approaches -data management and virtualisation- allows us to integrate geographic information technologies in the daily life of the Mesolithic and Neolithic communities, of which the virtual reconstruction of the different test pits carried out in Cueva de la Cocina constitutes a perfect example., [ES] Con este trabajo pretendemos presentar nuestro procedimiento de digitalización de información de campo (gestión de datos) y su imbricación enla reconstrucción estratigráfica virtual (virtualización) de la Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia,España).

This chapter aims to understand the stratigraphy in Cueva de la Cocina, and more specifically the interventions made by Pericot in 1941 and 1945. To do this, we will use the set of radiocarbon dating available for these interventions on which different chronological models will be elaborated using Bayesian statistics. Finally, on the results of the chronological modeling, the Mesolithic occupation of the cave along the recent Mesolithic (archaeological entity known as Geological Mesolithic) is emphasized, highlighting the different cultural phases (Geometric A and B) and their chronological ranges.

We present in this communication the preliminary results of the archaeo-statistical analysis of the lithic collection recovered during the interventions of Luís Pericot (1941-1945) in Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia) (Figure 1). To date, the studies carried out had been restricted to the intervention of the year 1945, in addition to some partial counts of the retouched lithic pieces selected during the excavation (Pericot 1945). Within the framework of the HAR2012-3311 "MESO COCINA" and HAR2015-68962 "EVOLPAST" projects, the study of artifacts and ecofacts has been the result of the different interventions carried out in the cavity (García Puchol et al. 2017). For this purpose, a virtual work laboratory has been designed that integrates spatial information into a 3D environment (R Core Team 2016). In this communication we are going to explore the spatial and temporal variability of the lithic group described by Pericot's interventions, focusing on the archaeological units related to the geometric Mesolithic. The voluminous set of materials includes a large amount of remains of size mainly residues derived from laminar production (blades and fragments of blades, including cores and preparation crests) aimed at the manufacture of geometric projectiles (Figure 2). Among the retouched tools, in addition to the geometric, there are many notched blades (Montbaní). The first phase of the work has been dedicated to the classification of the materials according to the sectors and layers referred to by the excavator. Next, the designed analytical procedure has included the generation of spatial dispersion of materials from the calculation of densities by layer and sector, and the analysis of diachronic distribution through the support of Bayesian modeling. The application of different archeo-statistical methods based on the technological and typological categorization carried out makes it possible to test explanatory hypotheses of the variability observed in response to patterns of occupation and exploitation of the territory that derive from models generated within the framework of the Ecology of Human Behavior.

In landscapes heavily modified by agricultural terraces and other modern land uses, the spatial and temporal pattern of the prehistoric settlement can be difficult to detect using traditional archaeological survey methods geared towards locating particular deposits. The flagging of the territory for its agricultural exploitation is a common norm in the work area, so it is necessary to examine the landscape as a whole, instead of trying to locate specific areas of prehistoric anthropic activity. To overcome these challenges, a stratified strategy has been used, by selecting randomly plots to survey, to examine the socio-ecological dynamics from the early Pleistocene to the Atlantic period with special attention to the key Holocene moments to understand yhe neolithization process. The study area was divided into sectors (Figure 1), taking into account the geomorphological and vegetative differences and from there in each of the sectors, a series of plots was prospected randomly. The density of surface findings is used to generate chronological prehistoric logs of occupation of the territory through Bayesian methods (Figure 2). The regional reference collections of well-dated lithic artifacts provide the "prior knowledge" required to estimate the probability of use of the area throughout prehistory. All data obtained in the survey are digitally recorded using electronic tablets in the field, thanks to a simplified data management plan in which observations of artifacts, soils, visibility of the soil and photographs are georeferenced and prepared for further analysis. in the framework of a Geographic Information System. All this, without forgetting that the main objective of systematic surveying in La Canal de Navarrés is to approach the way in which prehistoric communities have interacted with their environment since the Middle Palaeolithic until the end of the Prehistory (García Puchol et al. 2014, Diez Castillo et al. 2016). It is these socio-ecological aspects that have special relevance to understand the response of communities to local changes (Barton et al. 2002).

We present in this communication the design and development of the 3D virtualization work of the excavations in Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia) within the framework of a comprehensive research project whose objective is to raise awareness of the socio-ecological dynamics of the last hunter-gatherers and the first agriculturalists thanks to the interesting sequence provided by the site (fig. 1). The project contemplates the design of a program that integrates the archaeological information of the different interventions carried out at site in a 3D environment (García Puchol et al., 2016). The results offered correspond to the reconstruction of the fieldworks seasons carried out by Lluís Pericot in the 1940s (1941, 1942, 1943 and 1945) (Pericot, 1945). In this way, and in parallel, the work has been structured in a series of phases that include the classification and analysis of artifacts and ecofacts, the 3D reconstruction of the stratigraphy of the excavations from the available information in the field diaries, and the implementation of a radiometric program designed according to a Bayesian modeling criteria (García Puchol et al., 2017).

[EN] This paper offers an overview for the Early Neolithic of the southern coast of Andalusia (Spain). Analyses of materials recovered during the 1979-87 excavations in Nerja cave by professor Francisco Jordá Cerdá, including new radiocarbon dates on domestic taxa, allow us to examine the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. Paleoenvironmental and paleoeconomic data (stratigraphy and bioarcheological data) combined with archaeological data (ornaments, bone tools, lithics, and ceramics were analysed) to provide a regional perspective on the neolithisation of the western Mediterranean. There is an apparent 500-year gap between occupations by the last coastal foragers and the earliest Neolithic farmers, and no evidence is found to suggest a local Neolithization. [EN] At this document we present a computer protocol, designed for the development of a digital environment which will allow virtual reconstruction of both, the stratigraphic information and the material record found at Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia). By this we also mean to relate the most recent fieldwork at the site to that carried on during the 1970s. The first interventions inside the cavity date back to the first half of the XX century, when a complex sequence, which comprehended layers mainly related to the last hunter-gutherers and the first farmers, was identified. Accurateness, both describing and gathering precise information of the site was not a priority according to the methodology of older excavations. However, the fieldwork directed by Javier Fortea during the 1970s was meticulously registered using tridimensional notes of the information referring to the excavated layers and the recovered findings, although an analysis and interpretation of the site was never undertaken. Nowadays, we intend to integrate that information into a virtual working environment, so that, using specific software, data can be digitally processed for its 3D visualization and further analysis. Resorting to different statistical analysis and graphic representation packages has also been required. The results presented here refer to virtualization of the tridimensional information of one of the units excavated during the 2015 campaign, along with two adjacent units of the intervention developed by Javier Fortea.

The Emergence of Coupled Natural and Human Landscapes in the Western Mediterranean". In this paper we present a preliminary approach to the survey work carried out in La Canal de Navarrés (Valencia) since 2014 in the framework of the NSF Project 'The Emergence of Coupled Natural and Human Landscapes in the Western Mediterranean'. The programme developed follows previous protocols established by us with the novelty of the use of new technologies (electronic devices) with the goal to make more dynamic the analysis of data in a GIS environment. The results confirm the existence, in several open-air locations, of prehistoric artefacts along the valley regarding to a wide chronology (from the final Pleistocene and covering the Holocene) that can be added to the sequence known at the area including Middle Palaeolithic to Bronze Age evidences.
