Abstract: We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

2. Evaluation of water equivalent thicknesses using the IEM-CSIC scanner prototype

Abstract: Proton imaging has been proposed as an alternative low-dose imaging technique for acquiring relative stopping power (RSP) maps and for patient positioning. In proton therapy and hadrontherapy, the water equivalent thickness (WET) of a material represents its radiological thickness, however, its calculation requires computationally intensive methods or approximate solutions. At IEM-CSIC, we have developed a scanner prototype for imaging with protons composed of two double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSSD) and fast scintillators with high energy resolution, detectors that are commonly used in Experimental Nuclear Physics. Two custom-made samples of aluminum, air, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were imaged and their proton radiography images (pRads) are presented in terms of WET. Pattern reproduction, spatial resolution, and sensitivity to di↵erent materials were studied. We present pRads of our samples obtained using a rather traditional approach to compute WET values. All three materials of the studied samples, aluminum, PMMA, and air, were well distinguished; the resulting WET values were in good agreement between samples.

Abstract: The multinucleon transfer reaction mechanism was employed to populate isotopes around the doubly-magic 208 Pb nucleus. We used an unstable 94 Rb beam on 208 Pb targets of different thickness. Transfer channels were studied via the fragment-γ and γ-γ coincidences, by using MINIBALL γ spectrometer coupled to a particle detector. Gamma transitions associated to the different Pb isotopes, populated by the neutron transfers, are discussed in terms of excitation energy and spin. Fragment angular distributions were extracted, andcompared with the reaction models.

Abstract: There are evidences that the 15C nucleus has an extended neutron distribution or a "neutron halo", but this situation is far from clear. If 15C has 1n-halo, the scattering dynamics should be affected and the angular distribution of the elastic channels should be sensitive to coupling effects due to the halo configuration. The objetive of this study is to understand the role of the halo in 15C by investigating its dynamical response in intense electric fields at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. For this purpose experiment IS619 was conducted performing the 15C + 208Pb elastic scattering reaction at HIE-ISOLDE, CERN. The beam energy was 4.37 MeV/u, which is very close to the Coulomb barrier of the system. The experimental setup used was the global detection system GLORIA, a six silicon telescopes array enable to measure the energy and angular distributions of the scattered particles. During the experiment, the 12C+208Pb scattering at 4.37 MeV/u was measured for calibration. The results of the 12C+208Pb measurement were used to fine-tune the geometry of the experimental setup and it is presented in this contribution.

Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is considered a good candidate for a Borromean two-proton halo with a 15O + p + p structure. Angular distributions of the elastic scattering and inclusive 15O production for a 136 MeV 17Ne beam incident on a 208Pb target were measured for the first time at the SPIRAL1 facility, GANIL. Use of the GLORIA detector array allowed high-resolution data over a wide angular range from 20∘ up to 95∘ in the laboratory frame to be obtained. The elastic scattering angular distribution shows similarities with those for both 6He and 20Ne at equivalent collision energies with respect to the corresponding Coulomb barriers, exhibiting the suppression of the Coulomb rainbow peak characteristic of strong coupling. Optical model and coupled channel fits suggest that this is due to a combination of coupling to low-lying quadrupole resonances and Coulomb dipole coupling to the low-lying continuum, although their relative importance depends on the relevant B(E2) values which remain to be firmly determined.

Abstract: Nucleon knockout experiments using beryllium or carbon targets reveal a strong dependence of the quenching factors, i.e., the ratio (R s) of theoretical to the experimental spectroscopic factors (C 2S), on the proton-neutron asymmetry in the nucleus under study. However, this dependence is greatly reduced when a hydrogen target is used. To understand this phenomenon, exclusive 1H (17Ne , 2p16F) and inclusive 12C(17Ne,2p16F)X , 12C (17Ne , 16F) X as well as 1H (17Ne , 16F) X (X-denotes undetected reaction products) reactions with 16F in the ground and excited states were analysed. The longitudinal momentum distribution of 16F and the correlations between the detached protons were studied. In the case of the carbon target, there is a significant deviation from the predictions of the eikonal model. The eikonal approximation was used to extract spectroscopic factor values C 2S . The experimental C 2S value obtained with C target is markedly lower than that for H target. This is interpreted as rescattering due to simultaneous nucleon knockout from both reaction partners, 17Ne and 12C .

Abstract: The first experiment using radioactive beams post-accelerated by the HIE-ISOLDE facility has enabled to obtain a precise set of B(E2) transition probabilities in neutron-rich 74,76Zn isotopes. The resulting B(E2; 21+ → 01+) values are consistent with those determined in earlier REX-ISOLDE measurements. While the B(E2; 41+ → 21+) transition probability in 76Zn is also in agreement with earlier Coulomb-excitation results, the value obtained for 74Zn is considerably lower. For the first time, a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the 21+ state was measured for an exotic nucleus in this mass region. A detailed comparison is presented with large-scale shell-model and Monte Carlo shell-model calculations.

In this paper we present an overview of the physics and ongoing technical developments.

Abstract: This paper reports on elastic scattering excitation functions for the reaction Li+He measured at backward angles in the centre of mass energy range 5 MeV ≤ E≤c.m.9.5 MeV, with the aim of investigating the possible existence of molecular resonances which have been predicted to exist in the case of neutron-rich B-isotopes. Due to the short lifetime of Li, the experiment necessitated the use of inverse kinematics on a gaseous He target. The Thick Target Inverse Kinematics technique was used which allowed for the measurement of the full excitation function in a single Li run. Broad resonances were observed in the excitation region for B 15 MeV ≤ E≤20 MeV. To understand the nature of such broad structures, various theoretical attempts are reported concerning possible reaction mechanisms for this neutron rich reaction. The most promising approach to interpret the data is within the orbiting reaction scenario.

Abstract: We measured 135 cross sections of residual nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions of C12, N14, and O13−16,20,22 projectiles impinging on a carbon target at kinetic energies of near 400A MeV, most of them for the first time, with the RB3/LAND setup at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany). The use of this state-of-the-art experimental setup in combination with the inverse kinematics technique gave the full identification in atomic and mass numbers of fragmentation residues with a high precision. The cross sections of these residues were determined with uncertainties below 20% for most of the cases. These data are compared to other previous measurements with stable isotopes and are also used to benchmark different model calculations.

Abstract: Proton therapy is a cancer treatment technique currently in growth since it offers advantages with respect to conventional X-ray and ¿ -ray radiotherapy. In particular, better control of the dose deposition allowing to reach higher conformity in the treatments causing less secondary effects. However, in order to take full advantage of its potential, improvements in treatment planning and dose verification are required. A new prototype of proton computed tomography scanner is proposed to design more accurate and precise treatment plans for proton therapy. Our prototype is formed by double-sided silicon strip detectors and scintillators of LaBr3(Ce) with high energy resolution and fast response. Here, the results obtained from an experiment performed using a 100-MeV proton beam are presented. Proton radiographs of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) samples of 50-mm thickness with spatial patterns in aluminum were taken. Their properties were studied, including reproduction of the dimensions, spatial resolution, and sensitivity to different materials. Structures of up to 2 mm are well resolved and the sensitivity of the system was enough to distinguish the thicknesses of 10 mm of aluminum or PMMA. The spatial resolution of the images was 0.3 line pairs per mm (MTF-10%). This constitutes the first step to validate the device as a proton radiography scanner.

Abstract: The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F->15O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including gamma decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the ratio of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

Abstract: 19 pags., 14 figs., 3 tabs., The decay of the neutron-rich and was investigated experimentally in order to provide new insights into the nuclear structure of the tin isotopes with magic proton number above the shell. The -delayed -ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three -decay branches of were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via rays was identified in the two daughter nuclei of and , at excitation energies exceeding the neutron separation energy by 1 MeV. The -delayed one- and two-neutron emission branching ratios of were determined and compared with theoretical calculations. The -delayed one-neutron decay was observed to be dominant -decay branch of even though the Gamow-Teller resonance is located substantially above the two-neutron separation energy of . Transitions following the decay of are reported for the first time, including rays tentatively attributed to . In total, six new levels were identified in on the basis of the coincidences observed in the and decays. A transition that might be a candidate for deexciting the missing neutron single-particle state in was observed in both decays and its assignment is discussed. Experimental level schemes of and are compared with shell-model predictions. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the , and levels in were determined. Abstract: 10 pags., 8 figs., 4 tabs., The nature of the and excited states in is studied using the transfer reaction in inverse kinematics at 10A MeV at TRIUMF ISAC-II, in particular to assess whether either of them can be considered as an excited halo state. The angular distributions for both states are extracted using deuteron- coincidences and analyzed using a transfer model taking into account one-step and two-step processes. A good fit of the angular distributions is obtained considering only the one-step process, whereby an inner neutron of is removed, leaving the halo neutron intact. Higher-order processes however cannot be rejected. The small spectroscopic factors extracted suggest that the structure of both states is not uniquely halo-like, but rather display a more complex configuration mixing cluster and halo structures. Abstract: 12 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., The structure of Ge80 has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A previous study reported for the first time a low-lying 02+ intruder state at 639 keV, based on the coincidence with a previously unobserved 1764-keV γ ray, and suggested it as evidence for shape coexistence in Ge80. We used the β decay from the 3- 22.4-keV state in Ga80 to enhance the population of low-spin states in Ge80, including any excited 0+ level, and γγ coincidences to investigate it. We observed a 1764-keV γ ray in coincidence with strong transitions in Ge80, thus not feeding the proposed 639-keV 02+. No connecting transitions from previously known levels to the 639-keV and 2403-keV 23+ states could be established either. Shell-model calculations for Ge isotopes and N=48 isotones were performed. They succeed to explain most of the experimental levels, but fail to reproduce the presence of a 02+ state below ≈1200 keV in Ge80. Abstract: A complete methodology for detector calibration and energy-loss correction in charged-particle spectroscopy is presented. This has been applied to a compact set-up of four silicon detectors used for beta-delayed particle spectroscopy. The characterisation of the set-up was carried out using GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations and standard alpha-calibration sources. The response function of the system was in this way accurately determined to be used for spectral unfolding.

Abstract: We report on the current status of the ion beam laboratory of the Centre of Micro-Analysis of Materials at the Autonomous University of Madrid. The 5 MV accelerator facility provides MeV ion beams of any stable element. Six main beam lines are under operation, allowing the analysis and modification of materials through ion beam methods. Although the most demanded ions are H and He for standard Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and particle-induced X-ray emission experiments, many other analytical techniques and specific set-ups are available for users. The facility especially highlights for the use of high-energy heavy ions and microbeams, with important applications in material science, optics and electronics, biology, cultural heritage, and astrophysics. Ongoing upgrades of the facility are oriented to improve the quality of the service for external users and to face new scientific and technological challenges in areas such as advanced materials, space, energy and health.

Abstract: The single-particle properties of Mg29 have been investigated via a measurement of the Mg28(d,p)Mg29 reaction, in inverse kinematics, using the ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer. The negative-parity intruder states from the fp shell have been identified and used to benchmark modern shell-model calculations. The systematic data on the single-particle centroids along the N=17 isotones show good agreement with shell-model predictions in describing the observed trends from stability toward O25. However, there is also evidence that the effect of the finite geometry of the nuclear potential is playing a role on the behavior of the p orbitals near the particle-emission threshold.

Abstract: The decay of the neutron-rich and was investigated experimentally in order to provide new insights into the nuclear structure of the tin isotopes with magic proton number above the shell. The -delayed -ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three -decay branches of were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via rays was identified in the two daughter nuclei of and , at excitation energies exceeding the neutron separation energy by 1 MeV. The -delayed one- and two-neutron emission branching ratios of were determined and compared with theoretical calculations. The -delayed one-neutron decay was observed to be dominant -decay branch of even though the Gamow-Teller resonance is located substantially above the two-neutron separation energy of . Transitions following the decay of are reported for the first time, including rays tentatively attributed to . In total, six new levels were identified in on the basis of the coincidences observed in the and decays. A transition that might be a candidate for deexciting the missing neutron single-particle state in was observed in both decays and its assignment is discussed. Experimental level schemes of and are compared with shell-model predictions. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the , and levels in were determined. From the lifetime of the state measured for the first time, an unexpectedly large transition strength was deduced, which is not reproduced by the shell-model calculations.

Abstract: 12 pags., 5 figs., 3 tabs., The β decay of Hg207 into the single-proton-hole nucleus Tl207 has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs1/2-1, πd3/2-1, and πh11/2-1 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with state-of-the-art large-scale shell model calculations and previous observations made in this region, and systematic underestimation of the energy of the octupole vibrational states is noted. We suggest that in order to resolve the difference in predicted energies for collective and noncollective t=1 states (t is the number of nucleons breaking the Pb208 core), the effect of t=2 mixing may be reduced for octupole-coupled states. Abstract: 4 pags., 1 fig. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The kinematics of two-neutron emission following the β-decay of Li was investigated for the first time by detecting the two neutrons in coincidence and by measuring their angle and energy. An array of liquid-scintillator neutron detectors was used to reject cosmic-ray and γ-ray backgrounds by pulse-shape discrimination. Cross-talk events in which two detectors are fired by a single neutron were rejected using a filter tested on the β-1n emitter Li. A large cross-talk rejection rate is obtained (> 95%) over most of the energy range of interest. Application to Li data leads to a significant number of events interpreted as β-2n decay. A discrete neutron line at ≈ 2 MeV indicates sequential two-neutron emission, possibly from the unbound state at 10.6 MeV excitation energy in Be.

Abstract: We measured absolute cross sections for neutron transfer channels populated in the Rb-94 + Pb-208 binary reaction. Cross sections have been extracted identifying directly the lead isotopes with the high efficiency MINIBALL gamma-ray array coupled to a particle detector combined with a radioactive Rb-94 beam delivered at E-lab = 6.2 MeV/nucleon by the HIE-ISOLDE facility. We observed sizable cross sections in the neutron-rich mass region, where the heavy partner acquires neutrons. A fair agreement between the measured cross sections with those from GRAZING calculations gives confidence in the cross-section predictions of more neutron-rich nuclei produced via a larger number of transferred nucleons.

Abstract: The main goal of this work is to study the structure of the highest energy states in 8Be populated following the ß+-decay and the electron capture (EC) of 8B. With this aim, two experiments were performed at ISOLDE-CERN in 2017 and 2018. The first experiment had the aim to resolve the 2+ doublet at 16.6 and 16.9 MeV, in order to study their isospin mixing. The second experiment aimed to determine a value or give an experimental upper limit to the branching ratio of the exotic EC-p decay. In this paper, we present the experimental setups and we discuss the analysis and present the preliminary results obtained so far.

Abstract: The neutron-deficient 115Cs was produced at ISOLDE, CERN by spallation reaction using 1.4 GeV proton on LaC2 target. The exotic decay modes were studied by using a charged particle array (DSSD and pad detectors) and a ¿-detector array (four Clovers) at the ISOLDE decay station (IDS). In this report, results on observed ß-delayed particle emission from 115Cs, a nucleus close to proton drip line, is presented. By measuring the time distribution in the delayed proton spectrum, the half-life of the ground state of 115Cs was extracted. The obtained half-life is in agreement with previous reported value. For the first time, the p-unbound states of 115Xe, obtained by measuring beta-delayed protons from 115Cs is reported.

Abstract: The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure" 2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations.

Abstract: The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z=6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed NA(p,2p)CA−1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 2 state of C. The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton 1p−1p spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent Z=6 magic number towards the neutron dripline.

Abstract: Beta decay is a primary source of information of the structure of a nucleus. An accurate measurement of the half-life of a nucleus is essential for the proper determination of the reduced Gammow-Teller transition probability B(GT). In this work, we present an experiment using a compact set-up of Si-telescope detectors to measure the half-life of the B nucleus. Three independent measurements have been analysed, obtaining the values 771.9(17) ms, 773.9(18) ms, and 770.9(27) ms. The value of the half-life obtained as the weighted averaged with the previous published measures is 771.17(94) ms which is a factor 3.2 of improvement in the uncertainty of the half-life.

Abstract: The neutron-rich carbon isotope C was postulated to be a halo nucleus (S = 1215 keV, S = 9395 keV) according to different high-energy experiments. If so, it would be the only halo nucleus exhibiting a "pure" s-wave structure of the ground state. At low collision energies, the effect of this halo structure should manifest as a strong absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section, with a total suppression of the nuclear rainbow due to the large neutron transfer and breakup probabilities, enhanced by the halo configuration. The IS619 experiment, carried out at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN (Switzerland), is the first dynamical study of this nucleus at energies around the Coulomb barrier. It aims to probe the halo structure via the measurement of the elastic cross section on a high-Z Pb target. Preliminary results of the elastic cross section are discussed and compared to Optical Model calculations.

The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of Si34 such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log(ft) values and γ-ray branching ratios, absolute β feeding intensities, and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of Si34. Abstract: 6 pags., 4 figs. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, This contribution reports on the investigation about the existence of molecular and/or exotic cluster configurations in boron and carbon n-rich isotopes. To this aim two experiments were performed: the first experimental study of exotic 9Li + 4He cluster states in 13B using the resonance scattering method at TRIUMF, and, with the same technique, the measurement of 10Be + 4He scattering at LNS in Catania, where a 10Be radioactive beam was produced for the first time. In the case of 13B, the elastic excitation function shows the presence of various peaks in an excitation energy region never explored before. In the case of 14C, our exclusive measurement of elastic scattering data with a high intensity beam, sheds some light on previously published results which seemed to be in contradiction.

Abstract: 10 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab.-- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, Excited states in Sn133 were investigated through the ß decay of In133 at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for In133, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the ß-decay branch of In133J¿=(9/2+) ground state and its J¿=(1/2-) isomer. Thanks to the large spin difference of the two ß-decaying states of In133, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, Sn133, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. We report here new ¿ transitions observed in the decay of In133, including those assigned to the deexcitation of the neutron-unbound states., We acknowledge the support of the ISOLDE Collaboration and technical teams.
