Abstract

A complete experimental study of temperature dependence of the total spectral emissivity has been performed, for the first time, for absorber reflector selective coatings used in concentrated solar power (CSP) systems for energy harvesting. The coating consist of double cermet layers of silicon oxide with different amounts of molybdenum over a silver infrared mirror layer. The experimental measurements were carried out by a high accurate radiometer (HAIRL) with controlled atmosphere in the mid-infrared and for temperatures between 150 and 600 C. The spectral emissivity is nearly constant in this temperature range. Therefore, the temperature dependence of the total emissivity is given by Planck function. These results were compared with those obtained with the usual calculus using room temperature reflectance spectrum. Abstract

The polyol route is a versatile and up-scalable method to produce large batches of iron oxide nanoparticles with well-defined structure and magnetic properties. Controlling parameters such as temperature and duration of reaction, heating profile, nature of polyol solvent or of organometallic precursors were reported in previous studies of literature, but none of them described yet the crucial role of water in the forced hydrolysis pathway, whose presence is mandatory for nanoparticle production. This communication investigates the influence of the water amount and temperature at which it is injected in the reflux system for either pure polyol or mixture with a poly(hydroxy) amine. Distinct morphologies of nanoparticles were thereby obtained, from ultra-ultra-small smooth spheres down to 4 nm in diameter to large ones up to 37 nm in diameter. Nanoflowers were also synthesized, which are well-defined multi-core assemblies with narrow grain size dispersity. A diverse and large library of samples was obtained by playing on the nature of solvents and amount of water traces while keeping all the other parameters fixed. Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate the level of empathy among primary care (PC) health professionals and its relationship with their approach to patients at risk due to alcohol consumption. This is an observational, descriptive, and multicenter study that included 80 PHC professionals. The professionals completed a questionnaire comprising socio-occupational questions and inquiries regarding their actions when dealing with patients suspected of risky alcohol consumption. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was used to measure their level of empathy and was completed by 80 professionals, of whom 57.5% were family physicians, 10% were nurses, and 32.5% were family- and community-medicine residents. The mean age was 39.5 ± 13.1 (SD) (range of 24–65 years) and 71.3% were females. The mean empathy level score was 112.9 ± 11.1 (95% CI: 110.4–115.4; range: 81–132 points). Actions that stood out for their frequency were providing health advice in the general population, offering advice to pregnant women, and recommending abstinence to users of hazardous machinery or motor vehicles. The level of empathy was associated with age (p = 0.029), the health center's scope (p = 0.044), systematic alcohol exploration (p = 0.034), and follow-ups for patients diagnosed with risky consumption (p = 0.037). The mean score obtained indicated a high level of empathy among professionals. Professionals with greater empathy more frequently conducted systematic screening for risky alcohol consumption. Aim: This study aimed to identify whether clinicians' gender, clinical experience, and personal attitudes influenced their perception of criminality of specific sexual behaviours, their judgments about criminal liability if mentally disordered, and the need for treatment as part of criminal settings for those having ICD-11 paraphilic disorders. Method: In a secondary analysis of data only vignettes with the least (do not meet paraphilic disorder diagnostic requirements) and most extreme (met paraphilic disorder diagnostic requirements) descriptions of ICD-11 frotteuristic, coercive sexual sadism, and exhibitionistic arousal patterns and related behavior were randomly presented to participants. A total of 1,101 clinicians rated one to three vignettes (a total of 1,884) answering questions regarding diagnosis, criminal features, and their own attitudes. Results: The ICD-11 diagnostic guidelines were adequately used to distinguish paraphilic disorders from non-pathological arousal patterns.Vignette severity was the most important predictor for clinicians' determination that a crime was committed. Results showed an interaction of the classification of paraphilic disorders, clinicians' gender, and personal attitudes with judgments about concepts associated with criminality, criminal liability if a diagnosis was indicated, and the need for treatment in forensic settings. Conclusions: Increased formal education, clinical training about these disorders, and evidence-based treatment guidelines are required to avoid biases that may come from preconceived ideas and personal attitudes. Laws and policies that unnecessarily restrict the treatment of these patients in non-forensic settings—for example, when the individual is distress about the arousal pattern but no crime has been committed—should be examined.

45. Enhancement and Tunability of Plasmonic-Magnetic Hyperthermia through Shape and Size Control of Au:Fe3O4 Janus Nanoparticles.

Abstract

Nanohyperthermia therapies have appeared as a promising alternative for the treatment of diverse cancer tumors. Multifunctional nanosystems offer a step forward in these therapies. They harness more efficient and multistimuli hyperthermia for low-dose application, as well as supplementary functions for imaging, targeting, controlled release, and sensing. Among them, Janus Au:Fe3O4 nanoparticles (JNPs) are highly versatile and a prominent example for dual photo- and magneto-thermia capabilities. To achieve the highest efficiencies of these nanomaterials, which allow low-dose applications, optimization in terms of size and shape is imperative. Here, we have expanded the synthesis of Janus nanostructures and carried out a systematic study to understand the structure–performance relationship and improve their hyperthermia efficiency. JNPs were synthesized by seed-mediated growth processes to obtain Janus nanostars (JNSs) and Janus nanospheres (JNSphs) with controlled sizes, together with initial heterodimers and indented F3O4 NPs. The hyperthermia abilities were then evaluated using AC magnetometry and under near-infrared laser irradiation. The results showed a clear effect of size and shape on the tuning of both magnetothermia and photothermia. Iron oxide size showed the biggest effect on magnetothermia, which could be tuned by the size and shape of the gold component. Likewise, for photothermia, JNSs offered the best performance and a clear correlation between the proximity of the plasmonic band to the irradiation source and their photothermal performance, modulated by the presence of iron oxide. A SARmax of 3 kW g–1 for the strongest field and frequency tested, 0.48 kW g–1 for biological safety limits in magnetothermia, and 8.3 kW g–1 per W cm–2 of applied light for photothermia were obtained. The acquired results support the proper selection of the best JNPs for dual hyperthermia and allow one to set up the design rules for obtaining more efficient multifunctional nanosystems, opening new avenues toward advanced heating-based therapies.
