Abstract

This paper describes a decentralized low-cost system designed to reinforce personal security in big events in case of emergency. The proposal consists of using smart contracts supported by blockchain in the management of events. An alternative communication channel that does not require any cloud service is also provided with the aim of improving the coordination of emergency services. Peers may use this emergency support tool to interact with each other through a chat when additional support is required. Since information security is mandatory in this scenario, Identity-Based Signcryption schemes are here used in order to guarantee communication confidentiality, authenticity and integrity. Depending on the communication mode (peer-to-peer or broadcast), different signcryption methods are used. A first implementation of the proposal has produced promising results.

Abstract

In this paper, a collision avoidance system is presented to detect red light running and warn nearby vehicles and pedestrians in real time in order to prevent possible accidents. No complex infrastructure-based solution such as those based on radars or cameras is here required. Instead, a new solution based on smartphones carried by drivers and pedestrians is proposed so that it is the device inside the vehicle violating a traffic light, the one that self-reports the offence in order to generate alerts and warn nearby vehicles and pedestrians to prevent accidents. The proposal could also be used by road authorities to collect data on traffic lights that are most frequently violated in order to define an action plan to investigate causes and look for solutions. It includes a classifier for learning and estimating driver behaviour based on collected data, which is used to predict whether he/she is about to run a red light or detect whether that has already happened. In the first case, the system broadcasts warnings directly to close vehicles and pedestrians through Wi-Fi, while in the second case, the proposal warns vehicles and pedestrians in the neighbourhood through a server. The solution also includes a prioritization system based on changing traffic lights at intersections according to the needs and characteristics of the traffic at all times, giving the top priority to emergency vehicles. Furthermore, the proposal involves the use of cryptographic schemes to protect authenticity and integrity of messages sent from traffic lights, smartphones and servers, and privacy and anonymity to promote the use of the system. A beta version with some parts of the proposal has been implemented and the obtained results are promising.

5. Understanding the angular momentum evolution of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars

Abstract

We investigate a sample of 6 Herbig Ae/Be stars belonging to the Orion OB1 association, as well as 73 low mass objects, members of the $\sigma$ Orionis cluster, in order to explore the angular momentum evolution at early stages of evolution, and its possible connection with main-sequence Ap/Bp magnetic stars. Using FIES and HECTOCHELLE spectra, we obtain projected rotational velocities through two independent methods. Individual masses, radii, and ages were computed using evolutionary models, distance, and cluster extinction. Under the assumption that similar physical processes operate in both, T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars, we construct snapshots of the protostar's rotation against mass during the first 10 Myr with the aid of a rotational model that includes a variable disc lifetime, changes in the stellar moment of inertia, a dipolar magnetic field with variable strength, and angular momentum loss through stellar winds powered by accretion. We use these snapshots, as well as the rotational data, to infer a plausible scenario for the angular momentum evolution. We find that magnetic field strengths of a few k$G$ at 3 Myr are required to match the rotational velocities of both groups of stars. Models with masses between 2-3 $M_{\odot}$ display larger angular momentum by a factor of $\sim 3$, in comparison to stars of similar spectral types on the main-sequence. Even though some quantitative estimates on this dramatic decrease with age, for Ap/Bp magnetic main-sequence stars are presented, the results obtained for the angular momentum evolution do not explain their low rotation., Comment: 39 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for publication in AJ

14. Cut or Burnt? – Categorizing morphological characteristics of heat-induced fractures and sharp force trauma

Abstract

Distinguishing trauma from heat-induced fractures is a challenge faced by forensic anthropologists and pathologists during medicolegal investigations in which fire has been used by the perpetrators to destroy evidence. This paper aims to validate the provided identification features to distinguish between fire induced alterations and sharp force trauma. A total of 80 cremated adult individuals were used in this paper: 3 recently deceased embalmed cadavers from Cementerio Sur de Madrid for the sharp force trauma experiment in which 55 pre-burning injuries were inflicted using a machete and a serrated knife in different anatomical regions. And 77 cremated individuals from the Forensic Anthropology and Odontology Laboratory osteological collection. Five cremated long bones from this collection were selected, and 10 cuts were manually inflicted using a serrated knife to analyse post-burning trauma. Heat-induced changes and trauma morphologic characteristics were thus documented and analysed. The examination and documentation of morphological traits enabled the production of a heat-induced changes visual guide and a flow-chart. Two intraclass correlation tests were performed to validate the capacity of the observer to distinguish between fire related alterations and toolmarks. The results obtained in the statistical analysis indicate that, even if the toolmarks are visible and recognizable upon macroscopic observation by the observers, some features, such as the step and the transverse fractures can be mistaken with inflicted trauma. Abstract

PurposeThe primary purpose is to review diabetes workplace interventions and the degree to which they improve diabetes-related outcomes in employees diagnosed with or at risk for T2DM.MethodsThree electronic databases and ancestry searches were used to identify peer reviewed articles published in English from 2000 to June 2017.ResultsThe number of participants represented by the 22 selected studies, excluding one large outlier, was 4243. On average, the samples were 57% female and ethnically diverse. Interventions-healthy eating behaviors, physical activity, and/or monitoring and self-managing diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors-were delivered in group sessions of fewer than 20 employees. Programs involved 1-h weekly sessions held during lunch hour or at other times during the workday for 12 to 24 weeks. Study outcomes, commonly measured at 6 and/or 12 months, were consistently positive.ConclusionThe literature search uncovered beginning evidence that workplace interventions hold promise for preventing diabetes and/or its complications. More rigorous, creatively designed, workplace studies, are needed for employees at high-risk for developing diabetes.Practice implicationsImplications include the need for employer education about the benefits of employer support for such programs and attention to motivational strategies so employees will take full advantage of programs that are offered.

Abstract

Lyme Disease is a zoonosis transmitted by arthropods that has been described with more fre-quency in endemic zones of meridional countries. Its clinical manifestations vary according to the clinical stage of the disease. The eye can be affected in many forms including the involvement of the ocular surface and the posterior segment, with more severe inflammation of the retina and the choroid. We present a case of a 72 year male with a recent trip to EEUU who complained of decreasing vision in his left eye had cli-nical signs of nongranulomatous panuveitis with ma-cular edema and retinal vasculitis. Lyme disease was confirmed with positive antibodies in blood and Wes-tern blot test, and the patient was successfully treated using oral Doxycycline. His visual acuity improved and had a resolution of the intraocular inflammation after the specific treatment.

Abstract

[Resumen] El rendimiento académico está influido por múltiples variables, entre ellas, las estrategias de aprendizaje. Estas estrategias de aprendizaje son mecanismos conscientes e intencionales utilizados para procesar, codificar y recuperar información con la intención de aplicarla y transferirla a la consecución de un objetivo de aprendizaje. La finalidad de esta investigación era analizar la incidencia que el uso de las estrategias de aprendizaje tiene en el rendimiento académico del alumnado universitario. Siguiendo un enfoque de investigación de corte cuantitativo no experimental basado en la encuesta, se trabajó con una muestra compuesta por 639 estudiantes de primer curso de los grados de la Facultad de Educación de la Universidad de La Laguna y de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. La encuesta se realizó utilizando una versión adaptada del Cuestionario para la Evaluación de las Estrategias de Aprendizaje de los Estudiantes Universitarios (CEVEAPEU). El rendimiento académico se evaluó a partir de la nota media de los estudiantes al final del primer cuatrimestre.. Los resultados revelaron diferencias significativas en el rendimiento académico en función de la utilización por parte del alumnado de estrategias de aprendizaje cognitivas, metacognitivas y de gestión de recursos. Las conclusiones apuntan a posibles formas de educar y orientar a los estudiantes en relación con las habilidades y estrategias de aprendizaje como factor determinante para reducir las tasas de abandono y aumentar el rendimiento académico. [Abstract] Academic performance is influenced by multiple variables, including learning strategies. Learning strategies are conscious, intentional mechanisms used to process, encode and retrieve information with the intention of applying and transferring it to the achievement of a learning goal. The aim of this research was to analyse the impact that the use of learning strategies has on the academic performance of university students. The data for the study were collected using a non-experimental quantitative survey approach, based on a sample of 639 first-year students from the Faculty of Education at the University of La Laguna and the Faculty of Education Sciences at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The survey was conducted using an adapted version of the Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Learning Strategies of University Students (CEVEAPEU). Academic performance was assessed based on students’ average mark at the end of the first four- month period. The results revealed significant differences in academic performance based on students’ use of cognitive, metacognitive and resource-management learning strategies. The findings point to possible ways to educate and orient students with regard to learning skills and strategies as a determining factor in lowering drop-out rates and boosting academic performance.
