We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4-2015 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.352$). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of $r_e\lesssim100$ pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=2.063\pm0.005$ showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and is detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-19.7\pm0.2$. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer physical properties for the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star}\simeq10^{9.2} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST., Comment: Published in MNRAS. Recent JWST/NIRCam imaging taken for the ultra-deep UNCOVER program reveals a very red dropout object at $z_{\mathrm{phot}}\simeq7.6$, triply imaged by the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.308$). All three images are very compact, i.e. unresolved, with a de-lensed size upper-limit of $r_{e}\lesssim35$ pc. The images have apparent magnitudes of $m_{\mathrm{F444W}}\sim25-26$ AB, and the magnification-corrected absolute UV magnitude of the source is $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-16.81\pm0.09$. From the sum of observed fluxes and from a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis, we obtain estimates of the bolometric luminosities of the source of $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\gtrsim10^{43} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\sim10^{44}-10^{46} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$, respectively. Based on its compact, point-like appearance, its position in color-color space and the SED analysis, we tentatively conclude that this object is a UV-faint dust-obscured quasar-like object, i.e. an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at high redshift. We also discuss other alternative origins for the object's emission features, including a massive star cluster, Population III, supermassive, or dark stars, or a direct-collapse black hole. Although populations of red galaxies at similar photometric redshifts have been detected with JWST, this object is unique in that its high-redshift nature is corroborated geometrically by lensing, that it is unresolved despite being magnified -- and thus intrinsically even more compact -- and that it occupies notably distinct regions in both size-luminosity and color-color space. We compute synthetic, rest-frame optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxy populations at redshifts from z$\approx$0 to z=8 in a full cosmological framework. We achieve this by coupling, in post-processing, the cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations with new-generation nebular-emission models, accounting for line emission from young stars, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and, for the first time, fast radiative shocks. The optical emission-line properties of simulated galaxies dominated by different ionizing sources are largely consistent with those expected from classical diagnostic diagrams and reflect the observed increase in [OIII]/H$\beta$ at fixed [NII]/H$\alpha$ and the evolution of the H$\alpha$, [OIII]$\lambda5007$ and [OII]$\lambda3727$ luminosity functions from z$\approx$0 to z$\sim$2. At higher redshift, we find that the emission-line galaxy population is dominated by star-forming and active galaxies, with negligible fractions of shock- and PAGB-dominated galaxies. We highlight 10 UV-diagnostic diagrams able to robustly identify the dominant ionizing sources in high-redshift galaxies. We also compute the evolution of several optical- and UV-line luminosity functions from z=4 to z=7, and the number of galaxies expected to be detectable per field of view in deep, medium-resolution spectroscopic observations with the NIRSpec instrument on board the James Webb Space Telescope. We find that 2-hour-long exposures are sufficient to achieve unbiased censuses of H$\alpha$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emitters, while at least 5 hours are required for H$\beta$, and even 10 hours will detect only progressively smaller fractions of [OII]$\lambda3727$, OIII]$\lambda1663$, CIII]$\lambda1908$, CIV$\lambda1550$, [NII]$\lambda6584$, SiIII]$\lambda1888$ and HeII$\lambda1640$ emitters, especially in the presence of dust., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The study of galaxy evolution hinges on our ability to interpret multi-wavelength galaxy observations in terms of their physical properties. To do this, we rely on spectral energy distribution (SED) models which allow us to infer physical parameters from spectrophotometric data. In recent years, thanks to the wide and deep multi-waveband galaxy surveys, the volume of high quality data have significantly increased. Alongside the increased data, algorithms performing SED fitting have improved, including better modeling prescriptions, newer templates, and more extensive sampling in wavelength space. We present a comprehensive analysis of different SED fitting codes including their methods and output with the aim of measuring the uncertainties caused by the modeling assumptions. We apply fourteen of the most commonly used SED fitting codes on samples from the CANDELS photometric catalogs at z~1 and z~3. We find agreement on the stellar mass, while we observe some discrepancies in the star formation rate (SFR) and dust attenuation results. To explore the differences and biases among the codes, we explore the impact of the various modeling assumptions as they are set in the codes (e.g., star formation histories, nebular, dust, and AGN models) on the derived stellar masses, SFRs, and A_V values. We then assess the difference among the codes on the SFR-stellar mass relation and we measure the contribution to the uncertainties by the modeling choices (i.e., the modeling uncertainties) in stellar mass (~0.1dex), SFR (~0.3dex), and dust attenuation (~0.3mag). The UV bump is a broad absorption feature centered at 2175{\AA} that is seen in the attenuation/extinction curve of some galaxies, but its origin is not well known. Here, we use a sample of 86 star-forming galaxies at z=1.7-2.7 with deep rest-frame UV spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey to study the connection between the strength of the observed UV 2175{\AA} bump and the Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron photometry, which at the redshift range of our sample probes mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at ~6-8 micron. The sample has robust spectroscopic redshifts and consists of typical main-sequence galaxies with a wide range in stellar mass (log(Mstar/Msun) ~ 8.5-10.7) and star formation rates (SFRs; SFR ~ 1-100 Msun/yr). Galaxies with MIPS detections have strong UV bumps, except for those with mass-weighted ages younger than ~150 Myr. We find that the UV bump amplitude does not change with SFR at fixed stellar mass but increases with mass at fixed SFR. The UV bump amplitude and the PAH strength (defined as mid-IR emission normalized by SFR) are highly correlated and both also correlate strongly with stellar mass. We interpret these correlations as the result of the mass-metallicity relationship, such that at low metallicities PAH emission is weak due to a lower abundance of PAH molecules. The weak or complete absence of the 2175{\AA} bump feature on top of the underlying smooth attenuation curve at low mass/metallicities is then expected if the PAH carriers are the main source of the additional UV absorption., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in mnras

In language courses, oral skills are frequently a source of anxiety for students. Moreover, in some occasions, students are unfamiliar with the evaluation criteria used to assess their performances, increasing their level of stress when facing the oral exam. This article describes a series of activities based on the introduction of several formative and summative self- and peer-assessment activities in a Year 2 Spanish module, aimed at students in the Modern Languages Programme at the University of Nottingham. Students have varied profiles and learning styles, as their programmes include Modern Languages and some variations of Joint Honours programmes with languages. The activities aimed to give students some extra tools to allow them to better monitor their oral performance, potentially easing their concern on the linguistic elements which would be assessed and letting them autonomously identify their own strengths and the areas where they might need improvement. Shocks, modelled over a broad range of parameters, are used to construct a new tool to deduce the mechanical energy and physical conditions from observed atomic or molecular emission lines. We compute magnetised, molecular shock models with velocities $V_s=5$-$80$ km s$^{-1}$, preshock proton densities $n_{\rm H}=10^2$-$10^6$ cm$^{-3}$, weak or moderate magnetic field strengths, and in the absence or presence of an external UV radiation field. We develop a simple emission model of an ensemble of shocks for connecting any observed emission lines to the mechanical energy and physical conditions of the system. For this range of parameters we find the full diversity (C-, C$^*$-, CJ-, and J-type) of magnetohydrodynamic shocks. H$_2$ and H are dominant coolants, with up to 30% of the shock kinetic flux escaping in Ly$\alpha$ photons. The reformation of molecules in the cooling tail means H$_2$ is even a good tracer of dissociative shocks and shocks that were initially fully atomic. For each shock model we provide integrated intensities of rovibrational lines of H$_2$, CO, and CH$^+$, atomic H lines, and atomic fine-structure and metastable lines. We demonstrate how to use these shock models to deduce the mechanical energy and physical conditions of extragalactic environments. As a template example, we interpret the CH$^+$(1-0) emission from the Eyelash starburst galaxy. A mechanical energy injection rate of at least $10^{11}$ $L_\odot$ into molecular shocks is required to reproduce the observed line. The low-velocity, externally irradiated shocks are at least an order magnitude more efficient than the most efficient shocks with no external irradiation, in terms of the total mechanical energy required. We predict differences of more than 2 orders of magnitude in intensities of the pure rotational lines of CO, Ly$\alpha$, metastable lines of O, S$^+$, and N, between representative models., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present a pilot library of synthetic NUV, U, B, V, and I photometry of star clusters with stochastically sampled IMFs and ionized gas for initial masses, $M_i=10^3$, $10^4$, and $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$; $t=1$, 3, 4, and 8 Myr; $Z=0.014$ and $Z=0.002$; and log(U$_{\rm S}$) =-2 and -3. We compare the library with predictions from deterministic models and observations of isolated low-mass ($<10^4$ M$_{\odot}$) star clusters with co-spatial compact H\2 regions. The clusters are located in NGC 7793, one of the nearest galaxies observed as part of the \hst LEGUS and H$\alpha$-LEGUS surveys. 1) For model magnitudes that only account for the stars: a) the residual |deterministic mag - median stochastic mag| can be $\ge0.5$ mag, even for $M_i=10^5$ M$_{\odot}$; and b) the largest spread in stochastic magnitudes occurs when Wolf-Rayet stars are present. 2) For $M_i=10^5$ M$_{\odot}$: a) the median stochastic mag with gas can be $>$1.0 mag more luminous than the median stochastic magnitude without gas; and b) nebular emission lines can contribute with $>50\%$ and $>30\%$ to the total emission in the V and I bands, respectively. 3) Age-dating OB-star clusters via deterministic tracks in the U-B vs. V-I plane is highly uncertain at $Z=0.014$ for $M_i\sim10^3$ M$_{\odot}$ and $Z=0.002$ for $M_i\sim10^3-10^5$ M$_{\odot}$. 4) For low-mass clusters, the V-band extinction derived with stochastic models significantly depends on the value of log(U$_{\rm S}$). 5) The youngest clusters tend to have higher extinction. 6) The majority of clusters have multi-peaked age PDFs. 7) Finally, we discuss the importance of characterising the true variance in the number of stars per mass bin in nature.

This article introduces "Baby Robot", a robot aiming to improve motor skills of babies and toddlers. Authors developed a car-like toy that moves autonomously using reinforcement learning and computer vision techniques. The robot behaviour is to escape from a target baby that has been previously recognized, or at least detected, while avoiding obstacles, so that the security of the baby is not compromised. A myriad of commercial toys with a similar mobility improvement purpose are into the market; however, there is no one that bets for an intelligent autonomous movement, as they perform simple yet repetitive trajectories in the best of the cases. Two crawling toys -- one in representation of "Baby Robot" -- were tested in a real environment with respect to regular toys in order to check how they improved the toddlers mobility. These real-life experiments were conducted with our proposed robot in a kindergarten, where a group of children interacted with the toys. Significant improvement in the motion skills of participants were detected.

Multilingual Transformer-based language models, usually pretrained on more than 100 languages, have been shown to achieve outstanding results in a wide range of cross-lingual transfer tasks. However, it remains unknown whether the optimization for different languages conditions the capacity of the models to generalize over syntactic structures, and how languages with syntactic phenomena of different complexity are affected. In this work, we explore the syntactic generalization capabilities of the monolingual and multilingual versions of BERT and RoBERTa. More specifically, we evaluate the syntactic generalization potential of the models on English and Spanish tests, comparing the syntactic abilities of monolingual and multilingual models on the same language (English), and of multilingual models on two different languages (English and Spanish). For English, we use the available SyntaxGym test suite; for Spanish, we introduce SyntaxGymES, a novel ensemble of targeted syntactic tests in Spanish, designed to evaluate the syntactic generalization capabilities of language models through the SyntaxGym online platform., Comment: To be published in Findings of ACL 2021

As deep spectroscopic campaigns extend to higher redshifts and lower stellar masses, the interpretation of galaxy spectra depends increasingly upon models for very young stellar populations. Here we present new HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of seven nearby ($<120$ Mpc) star-forming regions hosting very young stellar populations ($\sim$ 4-20 Myr) with optical Wolf-Rayet stellar wind signatures, ideal laboratories in which to test these stellar models. We detect nebular C III] in all seven, but at equivalent widths uniformly $< 10$ {\AA}. This suggests that even for very young stellar populations, the highest equivalent width C III] emission at $\geq 15$ {\AA} is reserved for inefficiently-cooled gas at metallicities at or below that of the SMC. The spectra also reveal strong C IV P-Cygni profiles and broad He II emission formed in the winds of massive stars, including some of the most prominent He II stellar wind lines ever detected in integrated spectra. We find that the latest stellar population synthesis prescriptions with improved treatment of massive stars nearly reproduce the entire range of stellar He II wind strengths observed here. However, we find that these models cannot simultaneously match the strongest wind features alongside the optical nebular line constraints. This discrepancy can be naturally explained by an overabundance of very massive stars produced by a high incidence of binary mass transfer and mergers occurring on short $\lesssim 10$ Myr timescales, suggesting these processes may be crucial for understanding the highest-sSFR galaxies in the early Universe. We explore the production and escape of ionizing photons in young galaxies by investigating the ultraviolet and optical emission-line properties of models of ionization-bounded and density-bounded HII regions, active-galactic-nucleus (AGN) narrow-line regions and radiative shocks computed all using the same physically-consistent description of element abundances and depletion on to dust grains down to very low metallicities. We compare these models with a reference sample of metal-poor star-forming galaxies and Lyman-continuum (LyC) leakers at various redshifts, which allows the simultaneous exploration of more spectral diagnostics than typically available at once for individual subsamples. We confirm that current single- and binary-star population synthesis models do not produce hard-enough radiation to account for the high-ionization emission of the most metal-poor galaxies. Introducing either an AGN or radiative-shock component brings models into agreement with observations. A published model including X-ray binaries is an attractive alternative to reproduce the observed rise in HeII4686/Hbeta ratio with decreasing oxygen abundance in metal-poor star-forming galaxies, but not the high observed HeII4686/Hbeta ratios of galaxies with large EW(Hbeta). A source of harder ionizing radiation appears to be required in these extreme objects, such as an AGN or radiative-shock component, perhaps linked to an initial-mass-function bias toward massive stars at low metallicity. This would also account for the surprisingly high [OI]/[OIII] ratios of confirmed LyC leakers relative to ionization-bounded models. We find no simple by-eye diagnostic of the nature of ionizing sources and the escape of LyC photon, which require proper simultaneous fits of several lines to be discriminated against., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultraviolet (UV) observations of local star-forming galaxies have begun to establish an empirical baseline for interpreting the rest-UV spectra of reionization-era galaxies. However, existing high-ionization emission line measurements at $z>6$ ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \gtrsim 20$ {\AA}) are uniformly stronger than observed locally ($\mathrm{W_{C IV, 0}} \lesssim 2$ {\AA}), likely due to the relatively high metallicities ($Z/Z_\odot > 0.1$) typically probed by UV surveys of nearby galaxies. We present new HST/COS spectra of six nearby ($z<0.01$) extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs, $Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 0.1$) targeted to address this limitation and provide constraints on the highly-uncertain ionizing spectra powered by low-metallicity massive stars. Our data reveal a range of spectral features, including one of the most prominent nebular C IV doublets yet observed in local star-forming systems and strong He II emission. Using all published UV observations of local XMPs to-date, we find that nebular C IV emission is ubiquitous in very high specific star formation rate systems at low metallicity, but still find equivalent widths smaller than those measured in individual lensed systems at $z>6$. Our moderate-resolution HST/COS data allow us to conduct an analysis of the stellar winds in a local nebular C IV emitter, which suggests that some of the tension with $z>6$ data may be due to existing local samples not yet probing sufficiently high $\mathrm{\alpha/Fe}$ abundance ratios. Our results indicate that C IV emission can play a crucial role in the JWST and ELT era by acting as an accessible signpost of very low metallicity ($Z/Z_\odot < 0.1$) massive stars in assembling reionization-era systems., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, published in MNRAS

Measurements of the galaxy UV luminosity function at z>6 suggest that young stars hosted in low-mass star-forming galaxies produced the bulk of hydrogen-ionizing photons necessary to reionize the intergalactic medium (IGM) by redshift z~6. Whether star-forming galaxies dominated cosmic reionization, however, also depends on their stellar populations and interstellar medium properties, which set, among other things, the production rate of H-ionizing photons, $\xi_\text{ion}^\star$, and the fraction of these escaping into the IGM. Given the difficulty of constraining with existing observatories the physical properties of z>6 galaxies, in this work we focus on a sample of ten nearby objects showing UV spectral features comparable to those observed at z>6. We use the new-generation Beagle tool to model the UV-to-optical photometry and UV/optical emission lines of these Local 'analogues' of high-redshift galaxies, finding that our relatively simple, yet fully self-consistent, physical model can successfully reproduce the different observables considered. Our galaxies span a broad range of metallicities and are characterised by high ionization parameters, low dust attenuation, and very young stellar populations. Through our analysis, we derive a novel diagnostic of the production rate of H-ionizing photons per unit UV luminosity, $\xi_\text{ion}^\star$, based on the equivalent width of the bright $[\text{OIII}] \lambda 4959,5007$ doublet, which does not require measurements of H-recombination lines. This new diagnostic can be used to estimate $\xi_\text{ion}^\star$ from future direct measurements of the $[\text{OIII}] \lambda 4959,5007$ line using JWST/NIRSpec (out to z~9.5), and by exploiting the contamination by $\text{H}\beta + [\text{OIII}] \lambda 4959,5007$ of photometric observations of distant galaxies, for instance from existing Spitzer/IRAC data and from future ones with JWST/NIRCam., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Nearby dwarf galaxies provide a unique laboratory in which to test stellar population models below $Z_\odot/2$. Such tests are particularly important for interpreting the surprising high-ionization UV line emission detected at $z>6$ in recent years. We present HST/COS ultraviolet spectra of ten nearby metal-poor star-forming galaxies selected to show He II emission in SDSS optical spectra. The targets span nearly a dex in gas-phase oxygen abundance ($7.8<12+\log\mathrm{O/H}<8.5$) and present uniformly large specific star formation rates (sSFR $\sim 10^2$ $\mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$). The UV spectra confirm that metal-poor stellar populations can power extreme nebular emission in high-ionization UV lines, reaching C III] equivalent widths comparable to those seen in systems at $z\sim 6-7$. Our data reveal a marked transition in UV spectral properties with decreasing metallicity, with systems below $12+\log\mathrm{O/H}\lesssim 8.0$ ($Z/Z_\odot \lesssim 1/5$) presenting minimal stellar wind features and prominent nebular emission in He II and C IV. This is consistent with nearly an order of magnitude increase in ionizing photon production beyond the $\mathrm{He^+}$-ionizing edge relative to H-ionizing flux as metallicity decreases below a fifth solar, well in excess of standard stellar population synthesis predictions. Our results suggest that often neglected sources of energetic radiation such as stripped binary products and very massive O-stars produce a sharper change in the ionizing spectrum with decreasing metallicity than expected.
