Abstract

Owing to the increasing interest in the commercialization of phase-change memory (PCM) devices, a number of TCAD models have been developed for their simulation. These models formulate the melting, amorphization and crystallization of phase-change materials as well as their extreme conductivity dependence on both electric field and temperature into a set of self-consistently-solved thermoelectric and phase-field partial-differential equations. However, demonstrations of the ability of such models to match actual experimental results are rare. In addition, such PCM devices also require a so-called selector device - such as an Ovonic Threshold Switching (OTS) device - in series for proper memory operation. However, monolithic simulation of both the PCM and OTS selector device in a single simulation is largely absent from the literature, despite its potential value for material- and design-space explorations. It is the goal of this work to first characterize a PCM device in isolation against experimental data, then to demonstrate the qualitative behavior of a simulated OTS device in isolation and finally to perform a single monolithic simulation of the PCM + OTS device within the confines of a commercially available TCAD solver: GTS Framework.

Abstract

Background: The Emoty-Com training is a 16 hours-course based on interactive teaching to increase communication and emotion-handling skills for medical students. The study aimed to describe the Emoty-Com training impact on medical students’ attitudes towards patients’ emotions and to explore the association between students’ empathy, emotional intelligence (EI), attachment style (AS) and attitudes with post-training performance scores. Methods: The Emoty-Com training was delivered to all second-year students of Medicine and Surgery Schools in Verona and Milan (Italy) Universities. Empathy, AS and EI were assessed at pre-training; attitudes towards emotions in the doctor-patient encounter were assessed at pre-training and post-training; at post-training, a final test evaluating the knowledge acquired during the training was administered. Findings: The Emoty-Com training increased the relevance attributed to doctor emotional involvement, at least by male students, and students’ perception of self-efficacy in handling their own emotions during a consultation. Students with higher final test scores were those with less perceived self-efficacy in dealing with patients’ emotions before the training, while students with lower final scores were those who tended to give scarce importance to doctors' emotions in the clinical encounter after the training. Discussion: In contrast with previous literature, the relationship between AS, EI, empathy, and communication skills measured by the final test was not confirmed. Students' acquired knowledge resulted related to their attitude towards emotions, which should be considered in adapting future training to the specific needs of medical students.

Abstract

Objective: To describe the Emoty-Com training, its impact on medical students’ attitudes towards doctors’ emotions and to explore the association between students’ empathy, emotional intelligence (EI), and attachment style (AS) with post-training performance scores. Methods: The 16-hour Emoty-Com training was delivered to all second-year medical students of Verona and Milan (Italy) Universities. At pre-training, students filled out three questionnaires assessing empathy, AS and EI and responded to three questions on attitudes towards doctors’ emotions in the doctor-patient encounter. The same three questions and a final evaluation test were proposed at post-training. Results: 264 students participated in the study. The training reduced students’ worry about managing emotions during doctor-patient relationships. Gender was associated with specific subscales of empathy, EI, and AS. Final performance scores were associated with students’ attitudes towards emotions but not with empathy, EI, and AS. Conclusion: The Emoty-Com training increased students’ self-efficacy in handling their own emotions during consultations. Students' performance scores were related to their attitude towards doctors’ emotions in clinical encounters. Practice Implications: The Emoty-Com training suggests ways to teach and evaluate emotion-handling skills for medical students. Possible links between empathy, EI, AS, and the attitudes towards doctors’ emotions during the years of education are highlighted.

Abstract

Background. Although the relationship among Emotional Intelligence (EI), Attachment Security (AS), and Empathy (E) has been previously established, the mechanism through which these three constructs relate to each other is not wholly understood. Since EI has been found to be predicted by AS and to predict E, we advanced an integrated model according to which EI mediates the relation between AS and E in undergraduate medical students. Methods. In a cross-sectional design, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and demographic questions were electronically administrated to 253 second-year medical students (56.13% female) of two medical schools in Northern Italy. Pearson’s zero-order correlation coefficients (r) were computed to examine the associations between the three dimensions. To test the indirect effect of AS on E through the variable mediator EI, a mediation analysis was performed using the Structural Equations Modelling (SEM). Findings. Abstract

This article presents the findings of a study conducted in Italy to evaluate the performance of different ultrasound-based prediction models for distinguishing between benign and malignant adnexal masses. The study included 1431 patients from 21 Italian centers, both oncological and non-oncological. The results showed that the two-step strategy with or without CA125, ADNEX with or without CA125, and SRRisk had similar performance in distinguishing between benign and malignant adnexal tumors, regardless of the expertise of the ultrasound operators. Abstract

Selector device is critical in high-density cross-point resistive switching memory arrays for suppressing the sneak leakage current path. GexSe1-x based ovonic threshold switch (OTS) selectors have recently demonstrated strong performance with high on-state current, nonlinearity and endurance. Detailed study of its reliability is still lacking and the understanding on the responsible mechanisms is limited. In this work, for the first time, the endurance degradation mechanism of Ge-rich GexSe1-x OTS is identified. Accumulation of slow defects that remain delocalized at off-state and GeSe segregation/crystallization during cycling lead to the recoverable and non-recoverable leakage current, respectively. Most importantly, a refreshing program scheme is developed to recover and prevent the OTS degradation and the endurance can be therefore improved by more than five orders without adding additional material elements or process steps.

Abstract

Objective: To explore the association of emotional intelligence (EI) and attachment security (AS) with empathy dimensions in medical students by examining the mediating role of EI. Methods: In a cross-sectional design, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and demographic questions were administrated to second-year medical students of two medical schools in Northern Italy. Results: 253 medical students (56.13% female), aged 19–29, participated in this study. AS positively correlated to Empathic Concern (r = 0.17, p = 0.008) and Perspective Taking (r = 0.24, p < 0.001), and negatively to Personal Distress (r = −0.33, p < 0.001). Individuals with the same level of AS and a higher score on EQ-i had a higher score (β = 0.072, p = 0.033) on empathy latent factor (at the basis of Empathic Concern and Perspective Taking) and a lower score (β = −0.290, p < 0.001) on Personal Distress than those with a lower EQ-i score. Conclusion: This study shows that EI completely mediated the relationship between AS and empathy dimensions among medical students. Practice implications: EI training and workshop should be considered when designing educational interventions and programs to enhance empathy and decrease interpersonal distress in medical students.

Abstract

Today's explosion of data urgently requires memory technologies capable of storing large volumes of data in shorter time frames, a feat unattainable with Flash or DRAM. Intel Optane, commonly referred to as three-dimensional phase change memory, stands out as one of the most promising candidates. The Optane with cross-point architecture is constructed through layering a storage element and a selector known as the ovonic threshold switch (OTS). The OTS device, which employs chalcogenide film, has thereby gathered increased attention in recent years. In this paper, we begin by providing a brief introduction to the discovery process of the OTS phenomenon. Subsequently, we summarize the key electrical parameters of OTS devices and delve into recent explorations of OTS materials, which are categorized as Se-based, Te-based, and S-based material systems. Furthermore, we discuss various models for the OTS switching mechanism, including field-induced nucleation model, as well as several carrier injection models. Additionally, we review the progress and innovations in OTS mechanism research. Finally, we highlight the successful application of OTS devices in three-dimensional high-density memory and offer insights into their promising performance and extensive prospects in emerging applications, such as self-selecting memory and neuromorphic computing., (© 2024. Abstract

Objective: To explore the association of emotional intelligence (EI) and attachment security (AS) with empathy dimensions in medical students by examining the mediating role of EI., Methods: In a cross-sectional design, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and demographic questions were administrated to second-year medical students of two medical schools in Northern Italy., Results: 253 medical students (56.13% female), aged 19-29, participated in this study. AS positively correlated to Empathic Concern (r = 0.17, p = 0.008) and Perspective Taking (r = 0.24, p < 0.001), and negatively to Personal Distress (r = -0.33, p < 0.001). Individuals with the same level of AS and a higher score on EQ-i had a higher score (β = 0.072, p = 0.033) on empathy latent factor (at the basis of Empathic Concern and Perspective Taking) and a lower score (β = -0.290, p < 0.001) on Personal Distress than those with a lower EQ-i score., Conclusion: This study shows that EI completely mediated the relationship between AS and empathy dimensions among medical students., Practice Implications: EI training and workshop should be considered when designing educational interventions and programs to enhance empathy and decrease interpersonal distress in medical students., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. 48. Spiking Neural Networks Based on OxRAM Synapses for Real-Time Unsupervised Spike Sorting.

Abstract

In this paper, we present an alternative approach to perform spike sorting of complex brain signals based on spiking neural networks (SNN). The proposed architecture is suitable for hardware implementation by using resistive random access memory (RRAM) technology for the implementation of synapses whose low latency (<1μs) enables real-time spike sorting. This offers promising advantages to conventional spike sorting techniques for brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and neural prosthesis applications. Moreover, the ultra-low power consumption of the RRAM synapses of the spiking neural network (nW range) may enable the design of autonomous implantable devices for rehabilitation purposes. We demonstrate an original methodology to use Oxide based RRAM (OxRAM) as easy to program and low energy (<75 pJ) synapses. Synaptic weights are modulated through the application of an online learning strategy inspired by biological Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity. Real spiking data have been recorded both intra- and extracellularly from an in-vitro preparation of the Crayfish sensory-motor system and used for validation of the proposed OxRAM based SNN. This artificial SNN is able to identify, learn, recognize and distinguish between different spike shapes in the input signal with a recognition rate about 90% without any supervision.

Abstract

Based on the regulatory framework and an overview of dentistry in supplementary health, this paper discusses the specifics of the dental sector with respect to health promotion policies and quality of health care services proposed by the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS). The State's activities in supplementary health are based on law 9.656/98, which defines the relations between operators, products and their beneficiaries, and law 9.961/2000, which created the ANS. Concomitantly there was a great increase in dentistry in the private health plan market, because of changes in the practices of the profession. This required the need to know the logic of the organization of the services regarding the assistance provided and the model of care. The ANS develops measures to encourage operators to implement health promotion programs, striving for an integral care model. At the same time, it promotes the qualification policy of supplementary health care, with emphasis on the scope of care, though in dentistry the focus of evaluation is still individual and fragmented care. Indeed, the great challenge of dentistry is making it a public health policy, accessible to all, and the qualification of dental care in supplementary health.
