Some seismic models derived from tomographic studies indicate elevated shear-wave velocities (≥4.7 km/s) around 120–150 km depth in cratonic lithospheric mantle. These velocities are higher than those of cratonic peridotites, even assuming a cold cratonic geotherm (i.e., 35 mW/m2 surface heat flux) and accounting for compositional heterogeneity in cratonic peridotite xenoliths and the effects of anelasticity. We reviewed various geophysical and petrologic constraints on the nature of cratonic roots (seismic velocities, lithology/mineralogy, electrical conductivity, and gravity) and explored a range of permissible rock and mineral assemblages that can explain the high seismic velocities. These constraints suggest that diamond and eclogite are the most likely high-Vs candidates to explain the observed velocities, but matching the high shear-wave velocities requires either a large proportion of eclogite (>50 vol.%) or the presence of up to 3 vol.% diamond, with the exact values depending on peridotite and eclogite compositions and the geotherm. Both of these estimates are higher than predicted by observations made on natural samples from kimberlites. However, a combination of ≤20 vol.% eclogite and ~2 vol.% diamond may account for high shear-wave velocities, in proportions consistent with multiple geophysical observables, data from natural samples, and within mass balance constraints for global carbon. Our results further show that cratonic thermal structure need not be significantly cooler than determined from xenolith thermobarometry.

High‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphism is commonly associated with intermediate to felsic magmatism in continental orogenic belts. The heat budgets and transfer mechanisms responsible for such elevated temperatures and partial melting of the upper crust are uncertain. The Trois Seigneurs massif, French Pyrenees, preserves a structurally continuous record of Variscan high‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphism through a sequence of upper‐to‐mid‐crustal Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks. Conventional thermobarometry and phase equilibria calculations show that metamorphic conditions span ~2.5 kbar, 575°C to suprasolidus conditions of ~6 kbar, 700°C. Peak temperatures depend strongly on depth: temperature gradients of 50–60°C/km are present through the uppermost 12 km of the section; deeper portions (12–20 km) define restricted temperature conditions of ~650–700°C. The lowest‐grade metamorphic rocks preserve the largest spread in monazite 206Pb*/238U dates, from c. 325–285 Ma, while the spread in dates is restricted to c. 305–290 Ma in the highest‐grade rocks. Within this spread, each sample yields a well‐defined population of monazite 206Pb*/238U dates with peaks at c. 305 Ma in the andalusite schists, 295 Ma in the sillimanite schists, and 300 Ma in the migmatite sample. Monazite trace‐element compositions capture a systematic change with decreasing date and increasing metamorphic grade, including a more negative Eu‐anomaly and decreasing Sr concentrations, consistent with co‐crystallizing feldspar; increasing HREE and Y contents, consistent with xenotime breakdown; and decreasing Th/U, reflecting increasing U content during breakdown of inherited zircon. Zircon rims from a granite unit that formed via partial melting of the Paleozoic sedimentary package yields a 206Pb/238U‐207Pb/235U concordia age of 304.1 ± 3.73 Ma. These rims have trace‐element compositions reflecting cogenetic apatite and zircon growth during granite formation. Zircon from a calc‐alkaline granodiorite intrusion preserves a 40 Ma record of melt‐related activity in the lower crust that preceded the regional thermal climax. We interpret these petrochronological data to show that the Trois Seigneurs field gradient including andalusite schist and biotite granite samples represents a genuine geotherm through Variscan orogenic crust during the regional thermal climax at 305 Ma. When combined with constraints from other Pyrenean massifs, the form of the geotherm is consistent with a thermal scenario in which heat is advected to the upper crust by intermediate‐composition magmas generated in the lower crust. A simple thermal model for this process indicates that anatexis in the upper crust may plausibly occur within 10 Ma of the initiation of the lower‐crustal melting. Such a thermal scenario, however, requires focusing of melt through a fertile lower crust and an elevated Moho heat flux. We suggest that this process may have controlled the attainment of high‐temperature–low‐pressure metamorphic conditions along the Variscan belt and may currently be operating in zones of post‐orogenic continental extension. Ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT; >900°C) metamorphism drives crustal differentiation and is widely recognized in the rock record, but its geodynamic causes are debated. Previous work on granulite‐facies metapelite xenoliths from San Luis Potosí, Mexico suggests the lower crust experienced a protracted UHT metamorphic event that coincided with the onset of regional extension. To determine the duration, conditions, and heat sources of UHT metamorphism recorded by these xenoliths, this study characterizes the major‐element, trace‐element, and U‐Pb isotopic systematics of quartz, rutile, feldspar, garnet, and zircon by in situ electron microprobe (EPMA) and laser‐ablation inductively coupled‐plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS), and augments these data with detailed petrography, thermobarometry, phase equilibria modeling, and diffusion modeling. Thermobarometry and phase equilibria modeling suggest peak metamorphic conditions exceeded 0.7 GPa and 900°C. Zircon petrochronology confirms >15 Myr of UHT conditions since its onset at ∼30 Ma. A small population of zircon record elevated temperatures following transition from backarc compression to extension during the waning stages of orogenesis (60–37 Ma). Garnet preserves trace‐element zoning and mineral inclusions consistent with suprasolidus garnet growth and subsequent compositional modification by intracrystalline rare‐earth element diffusion during protracted heating, with diffusion chronometry timescales in agreement with zircon data, followed by fluid‐driven remobilization of trace elements along now‐healed fractures within ∼1 Myr of eruption. In sum, these data are most compatible with lithospheric mantle attenuation or removal as the dominant heat transport mechanism driving synextensional UHT metamorphism and crustal melting, which has bearing on models for crustal differentiation and formation of modern and ancient granulite terranes globally. Plain Language Summary: The production of melt in the deep crust has important implications for how continents are physically and chemically modified, which in turn controls the distribution of critical mineral resources and the expression of plate tectonics at Earth's surface. One setting where significant partial melting can occur is in a high‐temperature granulite terrane, such as the lower crust beneath the Basin and Range province of southwestern North America. The Basin and Range province is a region where the continent is actively experiencing tectonic extension and, in several places, has been interpreted to have lower crust that was (or is currently) heated to above 900°C. To understand the causality between continental extension in North America and these extreme metamorphic conditions, we study exotic rock fragments of the deep crust beneath San Luis Potosí, Mexico that were brought up by a geologically recent volcanic eruption. These rocks record chemical information that tracks the temperature of the geologically modern lower crust prior to eruption and the duration of extreme temperatures and melting in this crust over the last 60 million years. Using this chemical information, we further our understanding of how tectonic extension is actively driving deep crustal melting beneath southwestern North America. The last decade has seen a marked increase in U‐Th‐Pb petrochronological studies focused on titanite and apatite. This has motivated the need for detailed, phase‐specific method development and well‐characterised reference materials with a wide variety of ages and chemical compositions. This study presents new U‐Th‐Pb isotope and major‐, minor‐ and trace‐element mass fraction data for ten titanite and five apatite reference materials based on integrated EPMA, LA‐ICP‐MS and isotope‐dilution (ID) multi‐collector (MC)‐ICP‐MS characterisation. Cross‐comparison of EPMA and LA‐ICP‐MS data for the same titanite reference material suite demonstrates that careful selection of EPMA primary reference materials is necessary to minimise inaccuracies. We further identify a significant X‐ray interference when measuring low Ce abundances in Ti‐bearing phases and outline a method for its correction. New ID‐MC‐ICP‐MS and LA‐ICP‐MS data suggest tri‐concordance (defined as concordant ages for the 238U‐206Pb, 235U‐207Pb and 232Th‐208Pb decay systems) of the MKED‐1 titanite reference material and demonstrate the reproducibility of 208Pb/232Th measurements in some secondary titanite reference materials. Integration of 208Pb/232Th results with U‐Pb geochronology provides a meaningful tool to help interpret complex U‐Th‐Pb isotopic age spectra. We provide example applications of 208Pb/232Th LA‐ICP‐MS measurements toward interpreting Archaean titanite ages from the Acasta Gneiss Complex, Northwest Territories, Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
