Abstract

Radiography is an important part of diagnostic imaging in veterinary medicine. It relies on X-rays to diagnose diseases in form of images. The research aims to estimate the ESD for animals undergoing X-ray diagnostic examinations at the Digital Imaging Centre (DIC), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The concepts of radiological protection specified for human beings was observed and an indirect measurement of ESD was applied (mathematical formula). The result showed that the entrance surface dose (ESD) ranges for different examinations carried out on the animals were 0.97 - 39.89 mGy, 1.68 - 7.22 mGy, 5.04 - 10.61 mGy, 17.65 - 58.11 mGy and 12.78 - 38.41 mGy respectively for chest (AP), skull (AP), cervical spine (AP), lumbar spine and pelvis. The mean ESD values are slightly higher than the mean ESD from the related study specified for human beings. This indicates that there is a need for a periodic quality control program at the DIC, to reduce the animal doses to as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).

11. Radioactivity level in water around a cement factory in north central Nigeria

Abstract

In recent times, there has been consistent demand for drinkable water to meet the growing population of Obajana environs, where cement factory is situated. The mean gross alpha and beta activities in drinkable water around the communities of the cement factory, following a continuous exposure of workers and habitants was determined using a low background Gas-less counting system with solid state silicon detector for alpha and beta detection. The average activities for gross alpha and beta water ranged between 0.002871±0.00957 to 0.05335±0.0253 Bq/l and 0.2937±0.0588 to 39.96±11.3000 Bq/l, respectively. The alpha and beta geometric mean of the whole samples were found to be 0.0156±0.01487 Bq/l and 10.9±13.8373 Bq/l, respectively. The correlation coefficient (R), was found to be R = 0.8181, which shows there is a good relationship between the measured gross Alpha and Beta (activity). The average annual committed effective dose for water intake was between 0.149 mSv to 20.100 mSv, the recommended reference level for ingested dose for drinkable water was however exceeded in most locations, thus making the water in most locations not quite safe for consumption.Keywords: Water, Cement Factory, Effective dose, Gross Alpha and Gross Beta

15. Soil –plant transfer factors of radionuclide in cassava (<italic>Manihot esculenta</italic>) around a cement factory in Kogi State, Nigeria.

Abstract

Mathematical models are typically used to predict how naturally occurring radionuclides migrate from soil to plants. A transfer factor (TF) is the ratio of radionuclide concentration (Bq kg−1) of plant to soil in dry weight. This research aimed at determining the soil to plant transfer factor of radionuclide, in order to access the level of migration of natural radionuclide from soil to a selected cultivated crop (cassava), due to cement production activity around a cement factory. Soil and cultivated plant samples were collected randomly at different locations around the factory. The collected samples were analyzed using NaI (Tl) gamma (γ) spectroscopy. The average transfer factor (TF) from soil to plant was found to be 0.428, 0.531 and 0.398 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The TF indicates that about 42.8%, 53.1% and 39.8% of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively, were transferred from soil to cassava and varies in the order of 232Th (0531) > 226Ra (0.428) and 40K (0.398). All the transfer factors were below the world standard of unity. There exists a positive Pearson correlation among the three radionuclides in the soil and plant samples. The three radionuclides were detected in soil and food samples, and a positive correlation between them suggests that they originated from the same source for each environmental matrix. The results determined the value of TF of soil to cassava (Manihot esculenta) is at a safe level to the farmland around the cement factory and have no immediate radiological health implications due to cement production.
