1. Super-Localized Orthogonal Decomposition Method for Heterogeneous Linear Elasticity

Abstract

We present the Super-Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (SLOD) method for the numerical homogenization of linear elasticity problems with multiscale microstructures modeled by a heterogeneous coefficient field without any periodicity or scale separation assumptions. Compared to the established Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) and its linear localization approach, SLOD achieves significantly improved sparsity properties through a nonlinear superlocalization technique, leading to computationally efficient solutions with significantly less oversampling - without compromising accuracy. We generalize the method to vector-valued problems and provide a supporting numerical analysis. We also present a scalable implementation of SLOD using the deal.II finite element library, demonstrating its feasibility for high-performance simulations. Numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of SLOD in addressing key computational challenges in multiscale elasticity.

2. Hierarchical Super-Localized Orthogonal Decomposition Method

Abstract

We present the construction of a sparse-compressed operator that approximates the solution operator of elliptic PDEs with rough coefficients. To derive the compressed operator, we construct a hierarchical basis of an approximate solution space, with superlocalized basis functions that are quasi-orthogonal across hierarchy levels with respect to the inner product induced by the energy norm. The superlocalization is achieved through a novel variant of the Super-Localized Orthogonal Decomposition method that is built upon corrections of basis functions arising from the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition method. The hierarchical basis not only induces a sparse compression of the solution space but also enables an orthogonal multiresolution decomposition of the approximate solution operator, decoupling scales and solution contributions of each level of the hierarchy. With this decomposition, the solution of the PDE reduces to the solution of a set of independent linear systems per level with mesh-independent condition numbers that can be computed simultaneously. We present an accuracy study of the compressed solution operator as well as numerical results illustrating our theoretical findings and beyond, revealing that desired optimal error rates with well-behaved superlocalized basis functions can still be attained even in the challenging case of coefficients with high-contrast channels., Comment: 29 pages

Abstract

We discuss some aspects of the extension to continuous systems of a statistical measure of complexity introduced by Lopez-Ruiz, Mancini and Calbet (LMC) [Phys. Lett. A 209 (1995) 321]. In general, the extension of a magnitude from the discrete to the continuous case is not a trivial process and requires some choice. In the present study, several possibilities appear available. 11. Low-Level Defective Processing of Non-Verbal Sounds in Dyslexic Children

Abstract

We compared processing of non-verbal auditory stimuli by dyslexic and non-dyslexic children using electrophysiological methods. The study included 39 children (17 with dyslexia plus 22 controls) assessed via frontal, central, parietal, and temporal electrodes. As an extension of previous P300 event-related potential studies, we analysed variations in the power values of 40-Hz oscillations (gamma-band oscillations involved in cognitive processing) during a specific time window in response to the auditory "oddball" paradigm that entail target (random 2 kHz) and standard (frequent 1 kHz) stimuli. Dyslexic children differed significantly from controls (P less than 0.001) in the mean power of the wavelet-transformed 40-Hz oscillation in a time interval starting at 25 ms after stimulus onset up to 50 ms. This means defective processing of sounds. Within groups, standard and target tones elicited significantly different power values (P less than 0.001). Correlations of values between standard and target responses at each electrode position were not significant within either group, although dyslexics showed a lower correlation than controls. Significant differences in the mean power of these oscillations detected at very early stages of auditory processing in dyslexic children and the wide range of mean values reveal impairment in processing non-verbal sounds in dyslexia. Our results also support recent findings using behavioural and electrophysiological methods suggesting that dyslexia is a general auditory deficit instead of a speech-specific deficit. Abstract

The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium reports the generation of new mouse mutant strains for over 5,000 genes from targeted embryonic stem cells on the C57BL/6N genetic background. This includes 2,850 null alleles for which no equivalent mutant mouse line exists, 2,987 novel conditional-ready alleles, and 4,433 novel reporter alleles. This nearly triples the number of genes with reporter alleles and almost doubles the number of conditional alleles available to the scientific community. When combined with more than 30 years of community effort, the total mutant allele mouse resource covers more than half of the genome. The extensively validated collection is archived and distributed through public repositories, facilitating availability to the worldwide biomedical research community, and expanding our understanding of gene function and human disease.

15. Community-acquired pneumonia in patients from two different hospitals

Abstract

Se estudiaron en forma prospectiva pacientes con diagnóstico de neumonía adquirida en la comunidad que acudieron a la consulta en un hospital general y en un centro especializado en medicina respiratoria ubicados en la provincia de Buenos Aires, y que requirieron internación. Se evaluaron la distribución por sexo y edad, las comorbilidades asociadas, los agentes etiológicos, su incidencia y la mortalidad. Se incluyeron 52 pacientes (marzo 1998-febrero 1999) del Hospital General de Agudos Manuel Belgrano (HMB) y 23 pacientes (junio 2000- mayo 2001) del Hospital del Tórax Dr. Antonio A. Cetrángolo (HCET). Se excluyeron pacientes con tuberculosis o micosis pulmonar, neoplasia de pulmón y diagnóstico serológico para HIV. Se completó una historia clínica y se realizaron estudios microbiológicos para gérmenes comunes, virus respiratorios y micobacterias. Para el estudio de los agentes productores de neumonías atípicas ( Chlamydia spp, Coxiella burnetii, Mycoplasma pneumoniae y Legionella spp.) y como complemento del estudio virológico, se utilizaron pruebas serológicas. No se observaron diferencias por sexo y edad en los dos grupos. En el HMB las comorbilidades más frecuentes fueron EPOC, diabetes e insuficiencia cardíaca, en tanto que en el HCET fueron EPOC, asma y fibrosis pulmonar. Se obtuvo un diagnóstico microbiológico en el 48% y 65.2% de los pacientes para ambos grupos. Los agentes hallados más frecuentemente fueron Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza A y Legionella spp, este último germen con una incidencia del 12% en pacientes que evolucionaron favorablemente y que en su mayoría pertenecían al HMB. La mortalidad fue similar para ambos grupos (13.3%). En el HMB estuvo relacionada con la existencia de comorbilidades en 7 de 8 casos y en el HCET con el agravamiento de la insuficiencia respiratoria crónica. Patients hospitalized with community acquired pneumonia were studied prospectively in two hospitals located in the surroundings of Buenos Aires city. Fifty two patients from General Hospital Manuel Belgrano (HMB) were included from March 1998 to February 1999 and 23 patients from Hospital Dr A. Cetrangolo (HCET) for respiratory disease, were included from June 2000 to May 2001. Patients with lung tuberculosis, lung neoplasia and HIV infection were excluded. Clinical background, signs and symptoms were recorded. Microbiological examinations performed included bacteria, respiratory viruses and mycobacteria. Studies for "atypical" bacteria ( Chlamydia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella spp.) were carried out by serological methods. No differences in age and gender were observed between both groups. Most frequently observed comorbidities in the HMB group included COPD, diabetes and cardiac failure while in the HCET group these were COPD, asthma and lung fibrosis. Etiology was established in 48% and 65.2% of the patients in the first and second group, respectively. Most frequent agents were Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza A and Legionella spp.; the last one was detected in 12% of the patients. Most of these patients were from HMB and presented a good outcome. Mortality was similar in both groups (13.3%). In the HMB group it was related to the presence of comorbidities in 7 out of 8 cases, and in the HCET group it was a consequence of the worsening of their chronic respiratory failure.
