This study addresses the need for high-performance and sustainable air filters by developing a bio-based, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Current HEPA filters often rely on non-biodegradable materials, creating environmental burdens. In this paper, we presented a HEPA filter fabricated from natural basalt fiber (BF) and nanocellulose fiber. The developed filter featured a sandwich structure with electrospun nanocellulose fiber deposited onto a base BF layer, followed by a second BF layer and heat treatment. Various techniques were employed to characterize the obtained sample, and the results showed that the nonwoven BF fabric significantly reduced the pressure drop of the filter by up to 60 %. The nanocellulose fiber played a crucial role in achieving a remarkable filtration efficiency of 99.99 % for PM 0.3 . BF-based filter demonstrated exceptional fire resistance, hydrophobia, durability, and ease of cleaning, maintaining its effectiveness at temperatures up to 150 °C. Notably, it exhibited significantly better biodegradability than commercially available HEPA filters. Background: Accurate preoperative prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in esophageal cancer (EC) patients is of crucial clinical significance for treatment planning and prognosis., Aim: To develop a clinical radiomics nomogram that can predict the preoperative lymph node (LN) status in EC patients., Methods: A total of 32 EC patients confirmed by clinical pathology (who underwent surgical treatment) were included. Real-time fluorescent quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the expression of B7-H3 mRNA in EC tissue obtained during preoperative gastroscopy, and its correlation with LNM was analyzed. Radiomics features were extracted from multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging of EC using Pyradiomics in Python. Feature extraction, data dimensionality reduction, and feature selection were performed using XGBoost model and leave-one-out cross-validation. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to establish the prediction model, which included radiomics features, LN status from computed tomography (CT) reports, and B7-H3 mRNA expression, represented by a radiomics nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the predictive performance and clinical application value of the model., Results: The relative expression of B7-H3 mRNA in EC patients with LNM was higher than in those without metastasis, and the difference was statistically significant ( P < 0.05). The AUC value in the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.718 (95%CI: 0.528-0.907), with a sensitivity of 0.733 and specificity of 0.706, indicating good diagnostic performance. The individualized clinical prediction nomogram included radiomics features, LN status from CT reports, and B7-H3 mRNA expression. The ROC curve demonstrated good diagnostic value, with an AUC value of 0.765 (95%CI: 0.598-0.931), sensitivity of 0.800, and specificity of 0.706. The Yellow River water of an urban area located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River was taken as the research object， in which the seasonal and along-range distribution of total culturable bacteria， typical antibiotic resistant bacteria （amoxicillin resistant bacteria and sulfamethoxazole-resistant bacteria）， and their corresponding typical resistance genes ［ β -lactam resistance gene （ bla CTX-M ） and sulfamamide resistance genes （ sulI and sulⅡ ）， as well as intⅠ1 were investigated. The results showed that the total culturable bacteria， β -lactam-resistant bacteria and sulfonamide-resistant bacteria in the Yellow River Basin were significantly affected by temperature and human activities. The composition and quantity of their genera had obvious spatiotemporal distribution characteristics， in which Bacillus and Pseudomonas were dominant in the composition and number of bacteria. The abundance of resistance genes decreased with the decrease in temperature. The proportion of β -lactam resistance genes in the total genes was higher than that of sulfanilamide genes， and sulI was the dominant gene in sulfanilamide genes. Correlation analysis showed that class Ⅰ integron played an important role in accelerating the spread of resistance genes. This study offers insight into the status quo of water resistance pollution in the Yellow River and provides theoretical support for the risk assessment of resistance genes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin.

Esophageal cancer, also referred to as esophagus cancer, is a prevalent disease in the cardiothoracic field and is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in China. Accurately determining the status of lymph nodes is crucial for developing treatment plans, defining the scope of intraoperative lymph node dissection, and ascertaining the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer. Recent advances in diffusion-weighted imaging and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have improved the effectiveness of MRI for assessing lymph node involvement, making it a beneficial tool for guiding personalized treatment plans for patients with esophageal cancer in a clinical setting. Radiomics is a recently developed imaging technique that transforms radiological image data from regions of interest into high-dimensional feature data that can be analyzed. The features, such as shape, texture, and waveform, are associated with the cancer phenotype and tumor microenvironment. When these features correlate with the clinical disease outcomes, they form the basis for specific and reliable clinical evidence. This study aimed to review the potential clinical applications of MRI-based radiomics in studying the lymph nodes affected by esophageal cancer. The kidney contains numerous mitochondria in proximal tubular cells that provide energy for tubular secretion and reabsorption. Mitochondrial injury and consequent excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production can cause tubular damage and play a major role in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases, including diabetic nephropathy. Accordingly, bioactive compounds that protect the renal tubular mitochondria from ROS are desirable. Here, we aimed to report 3,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (DHMBA), isolated from the Pacific oyster ( Crassostrea gigas ) as a potentially useful compound. In human renal tubular HK-2 cells, DHMBA significantly mitigated the cytotoxicity induced by the ROS inducer L-buthionine-(S, R)-sulfoximine (BSO). DHMBA reduced the mitochondrial ROS production and subsequently regulated mitochondrial homeostasis, including mitochondrial biogenesis, fusion/fission balance, and mitophagy; DHMBA also enhanced mitochondrial respiration in BSO-treated cells. These findings highlight the potential of DHMBA to protect renal tubular mitochondrial function against oxidative stress.

Objective: To develop a few-shot learning (FSL) approach for classifying optical coherence tomography (OCT) images in patients with inherited retinal disorders (IRDs)., Methods: In this study, an FSL model based on a student-teacher learning framework was designed to classify images. 2,317 images from 189 participants were included. Of these, 1,126 images revealed IRDs, 533 were normal samples, and 658 were control samples., Results: The FSL model achieved a total accuracy of 0.974-0.983, total sensitivity of 0.934-0.957, total specificity of 0.984-0.990, and total F1 score of 0.935-0.957, which were superior to the total accuracy of the baseline model of 0.943-0.954, total sensitivity of 0.866-0.886, total specificity of 0.962-0.971, and total F1 score of 0.859-0.885. The performance of most subclassifications also exhibited advantages. Moreover, the FSL model had a higher area under curves (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in most subclassifications., Conclusion: This study demonstrates the effective use of the FSL model for the classification of OCT images from patients with IRDs, normal, and control participants with a smaller volume of data. Metallic alloys have played essential roles in human civilization due to their balanced strength and ductility. Metastable phases and twins have been introduced to overcome the strength-ductility tradeoff in face-centered cubic (FCC) high-entropy alloys (HEAs). However, there is still a lack of quantifiable mechanisms to predict good combinations of the two mechanical properties. Here we propose a possible mechanism based on the parameter κ, the ratio of short-ranged interactions between closed-pack planes. It promotes the formation of various nanoscale stacking sequences and enhances the work-hardening ability of the alloys. Guided by the theory, we successfully designed HEAs with enhanced strength and ductility compared with other extensively studied CoCrNi-based systems. The microstructure of steel greatly influences the mechanical properties. For 9 wt% Cr steels, which are widely used in the power generation industry, the steels have a ferritic and martensitic microstructure which can be altered by heat treating and chemical composition variations. Fully martensitic steels typically having high yield strengths but low ductility. Tempering can reduce the amount of martensite in the steel lowering the yield strength but increasing the ductility of the alloy. Alloying can alter the time required for a martensitic transformation. In authors' previously published research, the authors used machine learning methodology to predict room temperature tensile properties from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the initial steel microstructures from a wide range of steel compositions. Background and Objectives: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid exchange along a brain-wide network of perivascular spaces (PVS) termed the 'glymphatic system'. The aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels abundantly expressed on astrocytic endfeet play a key role in the CSF circulation in the glymphatic system. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory demyelinating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) featured with a specific autoantibody directed against AQP4 in most of patients. Anti-AQP4 antibodies are likely resulting in the impairment of the brain glymphatic system and the enlargement of PVS in NMOSD patients. In the current study, we aimed to demonstrate the features of EPVS detected by MRI and its association with the CSF anti-AQP4 antibody titer, CNS inflammatory markers, and disease severity in NMOSD patients., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of a consecutive cohort of 110 patients with NMOSD who had brain MRI. We assessed the correlation of EPVS with markers of neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier (BBB) function and severity of neurological dysfunction in patients. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine the independent variables associated with disease severity., Results: The median number of total-EPVS was 15.5 (IQR, 11-24.2) in NMOSD patients. The number of total-EPVS was significantly related to EDSS score after correcting for the effects of age and hypertension (r=0.353, p<0.001). The number of total-EPVS was also significantly associated with the titer of CSF anti-AQP4 antibody, the albumin rate (CSF/serum ratios of albumin), the CSF albumin, IgG and IgA levels. Logistic regression analysis showed that total-EPVS and serum albumin level were two independent factors to predict disease severity in NMOSD patients (OR=1.053, p=0.028; OR=0.858, p=0.009 respectively). Furthermore, ROC analysis achieved AUC of 0.736 (0.640-0.831, p<0.001) for total-EPVS to determine severe NMOSD (EDSS 4.5-9.5)., Discussion: In our cohort, we found a relationship between EPVS and neuroinflammation and BBB function in NMOSD. Background: Neuromyelitis Optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is severe relapsing and disabling autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Its optimal first-line treatment to reduce relapse rate and ameliorate neurological disability remains unclear. We will conduct a prospective, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial to study the safety and effectiveness of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) in treating NMOSD., Methods: The trial is planned to recruit 430 AQP4-IgG seropositive NMOSD patients. It consists of three consecutive stages. The first stage will be carried out in the leading center only and aims to evaluate the safety of hUC-MSCs. Patients will be treated with three different doses of hUC-MSCs: 1, 2, or 5 × 10 6 MSC/kg·weight for the low-, medium-, and high-dose group, respectively. The second and third stages will be carried out in six centers. The second stage aims to find the optimal dosage. Patients will be 1:1:1:1 randomized into the low-, medium-, high-dose group and the controlled group. The third stage aims to evaluate the effectiveness. Patients will be 1:1 randomized into the optimal dose and the controlled group. The primary endpoint is the first recurrent time and secondary endpoints are the recurrent times, EDSS scores, MRI lesion numbers, OSIS scores, Hauser walking index, and SF-36 scores. Endpoint events and side effects will be evaluated every 3 months for 2 years., Discussion: Although hUC-MSC has shown promising treatment effects of NMOSD in preclinical studies, there is still a lack of well-designed clinical trials to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of hUC-MSC among NMOSD patients. Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) show promising applications at high temperatures. However, achieving high strengths at elevated temperatures above 1173K is still challenging due to heat softening. Using intrinsic material characteristics as the alloy-design principles, a single-phase body-centered-cubic (BCC) CrMoNbV RHEA with high-temperature strengths (beyond 1000 MPa at 1273 K) is designed, superior to other reported RHEAs as well as conventional superalloys. The origin of the high-temperature strength is revealed by in situ neutron scattering, transmission-electron microscopy, and first-principles calculations. The CrMoNbV's elevated-temperature strength retention up to 1273 K arises from its large atomic-size and elastic-modulus mismatches, the insensitive temperature dependence of elastic constants, and the dominance of non-screw character dislocations caused by the strong solute pinning, which makes the solid-solution strengthening pronounced. Metallurgy and material design have thousands of years' history and have played a critical role in the civilization process of humankind. The traditional trial-and-error method has been unprecedentedly challenged in the modern era when the number of components and phases in novel alloys keeps increasing, with high-entropy alloys as the representative. New opportunities emerge for alloy design in the artificial intelligence era. Here, a successful machine-learning (ML) method has been developed to identify the microstructure images with eye-challenging morphology for a number of martensitic and ferritic steels. Assisted by it, a new neural-network method is proposed for the inverse design of alloys with 20 components, which can accelerate the design process based on microstructure. The method is also readily applied to other material systems given sufficient microstructure images. Phase transition is one of the most important phenomena in nature and plays a central role in materials design. All phase transitions are characterized by suitable order parameters, including the order-disorder phase transition. However, finding a representative order parameter for complex systems is non-trivial, such as for high-entropy alloys. Given the strength of dimensionality reduction of a variational autoencoder (VAE), we introduce a VAE-based order parameter. We propose that the Manhattan distance in the VAE latent space can serve as a generic order parameter for order-disorder phase transitions. The physical properties of our order parameter are quantitatively interpreted and demonstrated by multiple refractory high-entropy alloys. Using this order parameter, a generally applicable alloy design concept is proposed by mimicking the natural mixing process of elements. Our physically interpretable VAE-based order parameter provides a computational technique for understanding chemical ordering in alloys, which can facilitate the development of rational alloy design strategies., (© 2021. Developing affordable and light high-temperature materials alternative to Ni-base superalloys has significantly increased the efforts in designing advanced ferritic superalloys. However, currently developed ferritic superalloys still exhibit low high-temperature strengths, which limits their usage. Here we use a CALPHAD-based high-throughput computational method to design light, strong, and low-cost high-entropy alloys for elevated-temperature applications. Through the high-throughput screening, precipitation-strengthened lightweight high-entropy alloys are discovered from thousands of initial compositions, which exhibit enhanced strengths compared to other counterparts at room and elevated temperatures. The experimental and theoretical understanding of both successful and failed cases in their strengthening mechanisms and order-disorder transitions further improves the accuracy of the thermodynamic database of the discovered alloy system. This study shows that integrating high-throughput screening, multiscale modeling, and experimental validation proves to be efficient and useful in accelerating the discovery of advanced precipitation-strengthened structural materials tuned by the high-entropy alloy concept., (© 2021. In this study, three sequence batch reactors were selected to evaluate the effects of salt-tolerant activated sludge acclimation. The effect of salinity increase rate on pollutant removal, physicochemical characteristics of activated sludge, and microbial community were investigated. The results showed that a rapid salinity increase to 30‰ (within 30 d) reduced removal efficiencies of COD and NH 4 + -N from 85.5% and 98.5% (18 d) to 72.2% and 81.7% (51 d), respectively. In comparison, a slower salinity increases to 30‰ (within 90 d) had a minor effect on COD and NH 4 + -N removal. During the rapid salinity increase, a stable shortcut nitrification occurred under 20‰ salinity, in which the effluent NO 2 - -N reached 11.13 mg·L -1 and NO 3 - -N decreased to 0.56 mg·L -1 . When salinity increased to 30‰, the nitrite accumulation rate was about 90%, and the removal efficiency of total nitrogen increased to approximately 75%. The contents of polysaccharide and protein in extracellular polymer substances increased as salinity increased, and the polysaccharide content increased significantly when the salinity was higher than 15‰. High-throughput sequencing results illustrated that microbial diversity reduced as salinity increased, following the Shannon index decrease from 8.06 (0‰ salinity) to 4.34 (rapid salinity increase) and 6.17 (slower salinity increase). As salinity increased, Micropruina , Denitromonas , TM7a , and Marinicella exhibited good salt tolerance. The relative abundance of Denitratisoma , Defluviimonas , Arenimonas , and Denitromonas decreased more significantly following the rapid salinity increase compared with that after the slower salinity increase.

Severe distortion is one of the four core effects in single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and contributes significantly to the yield strength. However, the connection between the atomic-scale lattice distortion and macro-scale mechanical properties through experimental verification has yet to be fully achieved, owing to two critical challenges: 1) the difficulty in the development of homogeneous single-phase solid-solution HEAs and 2) the ambiguity in describing the lattice distortion and related measurements and calculations. A single-phase body-centered-cubic (BCC) refractory HEA, NbTaTiVZr, using thermodynamic modeling coupled with experimental verifications, is developed. Compared to the previously developed single-phase NbTaTiV HEA, the NbTaTiVZr HEA shows a higher yield strength and comparable plasticity. The increase in yield strength is systematically and quantitatively studied in terms of lattice distortion using a theoretical model, first-principles calculations, synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction, atom-probe tomography, and scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. Single-phase solid-solution refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) show remarkable mechanical properties, such as their high yield strength and substantial softening resistance at elevated temperatures. Hence, the in-depth study of the deformation behavior for body-centered cubic (BCC) refractory HEAs is a critical issue to explore the uncovered/unique deformation mechanisms. We have investigated the elastic and plastic deformation behaviors of a single BCC NbTaTiV refractory HEA at elevated temperatures using integrated experimental efforts and theoretical calculations. The in situ neutron diffraction results reveal a temperature-dependent elastic anisotropic deformation behavior. The single-crystal elastic moduli and macroscopic Young's, shear, and bulk moduli were determined from the in situ neutron diffraction, showing great agreement with first-principles calculations, machine learning, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy results. Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Serum albumin (SA) has antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the roles of SA in NMOSD have not been studied. The current study aimed to clarify the association of SA with disease severity and prognosis in NMOSD patients., Methods: Serum levels of albumin were measured by Bromcresol Green method. Serum level measurements of interleukins were performed using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method., Results: Of all the 130 NMOSD patients, 96 patients were in the acute phase while 34 patients were in the remission phase of disease at the time of sampling. SA concentration was significantly correlated with EDSS score in patients in the acute phase but not in remission phase (r = - 0.388, p < 0.001 and r = - 0.467, p = 0.809, respectively). Logistic analysis revealed that SA was the only significant factor to predict severe NMOSD (EDSS 8.0-9.5) OR = 0.698, 95%CI 0.563-0.865, p = 0.001) after adjustment of other confounding factors. Furthermore, SA was negatively correlated with the serum level of IL-33 (r = -0.438, p = 0.016) in the acute phase of NMOSD patients., Conclusion: The current study found that low level of SA was an independent indicator of more severe neurological deficit in patients in acute phase of NMOSD. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common chronic rheumatic disorder, accompanied by the differential expression of various microRNAs (miRNAs) in patients suffering from the condition, some of which have the potential to serve as novel complementary AS biomarkers. During this study, AS patients were recruited in connection with our investigation into the correlation of microRNA-132 (miR-132) in peripheral blood and its target gene NAG-1 expressions in relation with the clinical efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) treatment in patients with AS. A total of 218 AS patients who had been previously treated with oral diclofenac sodium and were placed into either the response (n = 175) or non-response groups (n = 43) following a 16-week period of therapeutic evaluation. An additional 113 healthy patients were also recruited for the purposes of the study. AS patient peripheral blood samples were obtained at the 0th, 8th, and 16th week, with the corresponding samples of the healthy patients collected at week 0. The expressions of miR-132 and NAG-1 were detected by RT-qPCR and analyzed using a ROC curve for the elucidation of the diagnostic value of peripheral blood miR-132 expressions as well as their predictive value among AS patients undergoing NSAIDs treatment. The targeting relations of miR-132 and NAG-1 were validated by microRNA.org and luciferase assay. Greater levels of peripheral blood miR-132 expression were observed among AS patients prior to treatment, in comparison to the healthy patients in the study. Prior to treatment, the area under the miR-132 ROC curve (AUC) of AS patients was 0.965, with a critical point of 2.605. The sensitivity and specificity of miR-132 were 91.7 and 97.3%, respectively, in regard to the AS diagnostic clinical efficacy. In comparison with the non-response group, the miR-132 expression of patients in the response group exhibited descended levels while the mRNA expression of NAG-1 increased. The ROC results indicated that the AUC of miR-132 was 0.876 with its sensitivity and specificity observed to be 95.3 and 80.0%, respectively. The AUC of NAG-1 was 0.912 with its sensitivity and specificity observed to be 76.6 and 79.1%, respectively. In comparison with the high miR-132 expression group and the low NAG-1 mRNA expression group, significantly improved blood biochemistry indexes, sign indexes, blood indexes, and adverse reaction rate were observed among the low miR-132 expression group and the high NAG-1 mRNA expression group. The microRNA.org and luciferase assay revealed NAG-1 to be a target of miR-132. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that the expressions of MiR-132 and NAG-1 could serve as biological markers in the prediction of the therapeutic efficiency of NSAID treatment in AS patients.

Correlations reduce the configurational entropies of liquids below their ideal gas limits. By means of first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, we obtain accurate pair correlation functions of liquid metals, then subtract the mutual information content of these correlations from the ideal gas entropies to predict the absolute entropies over a broad range of temperatures. We apply this method to liquid aluminum and copper and demonstrate good agreement with experimental measurements; then, we apply it to predict the entropy of a liquid aluminum-copper alloy. Corrections due to electronic entropy and many-body correlations are discussed.

Objective: To design and implement a discharge timeout checklist, and to assess its effects on patients' understanding as well as the potential impact on preventable medical errors surrounding hospital discharges to home., Methods: Based on the structure successfully used for surgical procedures and using the Model for Improvement framework, we designed a discharge checklist to review and assess patients' understanding of discharge medications, catheters, home care plans, follow-up, symptoms, and who to call with problems after discharge. In parallel, we developed a process of integrating the checklist into the discharge process after routine discharge procedures were completed. We used the checklists to assess patients' level of understanding and need for additional education as well as changes in discharge documentation; we also noted whether good catches of significant errors in the discharge process occurred., Results: Over 6 months of study, 190 discharge timeouts out of 429 eligible discharges were completed. Additional education was provided in 53 of 190 discharge timeouts (27.8%), with 62% of this education being related to medications. Twenty-one (11.1%) discharge timeouts resulted in at least one change to the discharge documentation or a good catch., Conclusions: A multidisciplinary discharge timeout directly involving the patient can be effective in targeting additional areas for patient education and in potentially reducing preventable adverse events.

Aims: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Increasing evidence indicates that NMOSD is a Th2- and Th17-dominant disease. IL-25, IL-31, and IL-33 are three newly found Th2-related cytokines, and their roles in the pathogenesis of NMOSD have not been studied. This study aimed to measure the serum levels of IL-25, IL-31, and IL-33 in patients with NMOSD and evaluate their clinical implications., Methods: Serum was collected from patients with NMOSD (n = 48) and healthy controls (HC, n = 28). Serum level measurements of IL-25, IL-31, IL-33, IL-17A, and IL-6 were performed using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method., Results: The serum levels of IL-25, IL-31, and IL-33 were significantly higher in patients with NMOSD as compared to HC. The serum level of IL-31 was significantly correlated with IL-17A (r = 0.382,P = 0.009) in patients with NMOSD; the latter is a critical cytokine in the pathogenesis of NMOSD. The serum level of IL-33 was higher in patients with characteristic brain lesions than patients without (307 pg/mL vs 166 pg/mL, P = 0.028). Furthermore, the serum level of IL-33 in the acute phase of the disease was positively correlated with annualized relapse rate (r = 0.364, P = 0.04)., Conclusion: We found higher serum levels of IL-25, IL-31, and IL-33 in patient with NMOSD as compared to healthy controls. The measurement uncertainty is a non-negative parameter associated with the result of a measurement that characterizes the dispersion of the quantity values that could reasonably be attributed to the measurand. In the present study measurement uncertainty is estimated using the GUM (ISO/IEC Guide 98: 1993 Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement) bottom-up approach. The steps were followed: specifying the measurand; identifying all the associated sources of uncertainty; quantifying the uncertainty components; combining the uncertainty components; determining the extended combined standard uncertainty; reviewing the estimates and reporting the measurement uncertainty. In this process, the major uncertainty components with greater impact were identified; try to eliminate or to reduce the impact of these components can improve measurement methods. Examples were the determination of aluminum in starch and bread crumbs by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The uncertainties of aluminum contents were from measurement repeatability, variability of calibration curve, standard stock solution, dilution, solution volume and sample weighing. The data indicated that the major contributions to the uncertainty budget originating from urel(cAl)1 (the relative standard uncertainty of aluminum content derived from linear least squares calibration), urel(cAl)3 (the relative standard uncertainty of aluminum content derived from the dilution of the standard stock solutions) and urel(rep) (the relative standard uncertainty derived from the repeatability). Based on the analysis of the main individual contributions of each uncertainty source to the total uncertainty value, several modifications were proposed. Firstly helium collision mode was replaced by no gas mode to improve the sensitivity of mass spectrometry. Secondly the number of measurements was increased. Thirdly let the mean of data points in the calibration closer the measurand. Finally the relative error smaller gauges were used. After these modifications, urel(cAl)1, urel(cAl)3 and urel(rep) were from (0.035 8, 0.013 2, 0.008 5) down to (0.006 0, 0.010 5, 0.003 3), respectively; the combined relative standard uncertainty of aluminum was from 0.039 down to 0.013; the expanded uncertainty from 1.8 down to 0.4 mg·kg-1(coverage factor k=2). The improvement effect was significant.

In this data article, the pseudo-binary Cr-MoNbTaVW phase diagram is presented to show the impact of Cr content to the senary Cr-MoNbTaVW alloy system; the sub-lattice site fractions are presented to show the disordered property of the Cr-MoNbTaVW BCC structures; the equilibrium and Scheil solidification results with the actual sample elemental compositions are presented to show the thermodynamic information of the melted/solidified Cr x MoNbTaVW samples; and the raw EDS scan data of the arc-melted Cr x MoNbTaVW samples are also provided.

The alloy-design strategy of combining multiple elements in near-equimolar ratios has shown great potential for producing exceptional engineering materials, often known as 'high-entropy alloys'. Understanding the elemental distribution, and, thus, the evolution of the configurational entropy during solidification, is undertaken in the present study using the Al₁.₃CoCrCuFeNi model alloy. Here we show that, even when the material undergoes elemental segregation, precipitation, chemical ordering and spinodal decomposition, a significant amount of disorder remains, due to the distributions of multiple elements in the major phases. The results suggest that the high-entropy alloy-design strategy may be applied to a wide range of complex materials, and should not be limited to the goal of creating single-phase solid solutions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the effects of Ephedra sinica Stapf and Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis on angiogenesis in the treatment of bleomycin-induced rat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The rat models were created using bleomycin. The animals were divided into six groups: model, control, Ephedra alone, Schisandrae alone, combination of Ephedra and Schisandrae, and hydrocortisone alone. The treatments were administered for 28 days. After 7 and 28 days, the rats were sacrificed for pathological morphology examination, microvascular density determination, and angiogenesis-related cytokine examination. The Ephedra and hydrocortisone groups demonstrated significantly reduced alveolitis and pulmonary fibrosis grades compared with the model group (P < 0.05). The number of blood vessels in the Ephedra group was higher than that in the Schisandrae and combination therapy groups. At 7 days, the expression level of endothelin (ET)-1 in the model group was significantly higher than that in the normal group (P < 0.01). The level of 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α (6-keto-PGF1α) in the treatment group increased, and there were significant differences between the Ephedra group and the combination therapy and normal groups (P < 0.05). Ephedra inhibited the increase in the lung coefficient. The combination therapy prevented pulmonary artery injury and angiogenesis of the arteries by reducing the level of ET-1 and promoting the level of 6-keto-PGF1α in the blood. Ephedra and Schisandrae prevented alveolitis and the development of pulmonary fibrosis.

V is the only element in the periodic table that forms a complete solid solution with Cr and thus is particularly important in alloying strategy to ductilize Cr. This study combines first-principles density functional theory calculations and experiments to investigate the phase stability and elastic properties of Cr-V binary alloys. The cluster expansion study reveals the formation of various ordered compounds at low temperatures that were not previously known. These compounds become unstable due to the configurational entropy of bcc solid solution as the temperature is increased. The elastic constants of ordered and disordered compounds are calculated at both T = 0 K and finite temperatures. The overall trends in elastic properties are in agreement with measurements using the resonant ultrasound spectroscopy method. The calculations predict that addition of V to Cr decreases both the bulk modulus and the shear modulus, and enhances the Poisson's ratio, in agreement with experiments. Decrease in the bulk modulus is correlated to decrease in the valence electron density and increase in the lattice constant. An enhanced Poisson's ratio for bcc Cr-V alloys (compared to pure Cr) is associated with an increased density of states at the Fermi level. Furthermore, the difference charge density in the bonding region in the (110) slip plane is highest for pure Cr and decreases gradually as V is added. The present calculation also predicts a negative Cauchy pressure for pure Cr, and it becomes positive upon alloying with V. The intrinsic ductilizing effect from V may contribute, at least partially, to the experimentally observed ductilizing phenomenon in the literature.

A bidirectional phase-modulated hybrid cable television/radio-over-fiber lightwave transport system employing fiber Bragg grating tilt filter as a phase modulation-to-intensity modulation conversion scheme is proposed and demonstrated. Impressive performances of carrier-to-noise ratio, composite second-order, composite triple-beat, and bit-error rate are obtained in our proposed systems over a combination of 40 km single-mode fiber-and 1.43 km photonic crystal fiber transmission.

Background: It was still rare for the quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research of regional changes in hippocampus sclerosis (HS) in Chinese patients with epilepsy. This study aimed to study the hippocampal volumes (HVs) with quantitative MRI measurement in Chinese patients with epilepsy., Methods: Forty-six Chinese patients with epilepsy (intractable epilepsy (IE), n = 21; non-intractable epilepsy (NIE), n = 25) and 25 normal controls were collected between July 2007 and March 2008. All of the subjects underwent a 3T high-resolution MRI with oblique coronal thin sections oriented perpendicular to the hippocampal long axis. Hippocampal structures were assessed by visual detection, and HVs were quantitatively studied with a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)., Results: Our study suggested that there was no significant difference in gender (P > 0.05) while the right hippocampal head volume (HHV), hippocampal body volume (HBV), and the whole hippocampal volume (HCV) were greater than the left one (P < 0.05), but no significant difference was found in bilateral hippocampal tail volume (HTV) (P > 0.05) in normal controls. That unilateral/diffuse (64%/21%) and bilateral/focal (86%/20%) hippocampal atrophy (HA) were significant in IE and NIE patients, respectively. Anterior hippocampus, especially HHV (26% in IE and 20% in NIE) and HBV (29% in IE and 12% in NIE), had more significant atrophy than the HTV (5% in IE and 0% in NIE) in patients with epilepsy., Conclusion: By assessing the volumes of the regional hippocampus with 3T MRI, we could better define the range and distribution of HS, since regional or subtle changes in HVs could be detected earlier with 3T MRI.

Intracranial stenosis is associated with a high risk of ischemic events, even with medical treatment. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (PTAS) is an accepted intervention for addressing a moderate intracranial stenosis (≥50%) that is refractory to medical treatment. Distal emboli are seen in 34% to 70% of patients on MRI diffusion weighted images post PTAS. We present a unique case of an intracranial stenosis with a vulnerable plaque treated with PTAS under proximal flow reversal to decrease the risk of possible distal embolization.

Goose parvovirus (GPV), a small non-enveloped ssDNA virus, can cause Derzsy's disease, a highly contagious and lethal disease in goslings and muscovy ducklings, leading to a huge economic loss. However, little is known about the localization of B-cell epitopes on GPV structural protein. To address the issue, the structural protein of GPV was dissected into sets of partially overlapping fragments and expressed in Escherichia coli. Then Western blot reactivity of these glutathione S-transferase (GST) fusion short peptides to viral infected sera was surveyed. The results showed linear immunodominant epitopes, which were found in seven fragments covering amino acid residues 35-71, 123-198, 423-444, 474-491, 531-566, 616-669, 678-732. Our findings may provide the basis for the development of immunity-based prophylactic, therapeutic, and diagnostic clinical techniques for Derzsy's disease., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Objective: To observe the different effects between Mahuang (Herba Ephedra Sinicae) and Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) on the pathological changes of rats with bleomycin A(5)-induced pulmonary fibrosis., Methods: Ninety Wistar rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, model group, hydrocortisone group, Herba Ephedra Sinicae group, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group and Herba Ephedra Sinicae plus Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group. There were 16 rats in each group except the sham operation group (10 rats). Pulmonary fibrosis was induced by a single intratracheal injection of bleomycin A5. Hematoxylin and eosin straining and immunohistochemical method were used after 7- and 28-day treatment to observe the pathology of lung injury, measure the inner diameter of pulmonary arterioles and the density of nuclear membrane., Results: Compared with the sham operation group at 7 and 28 d, alveolar inflammation level was significantly increased in the model group (P<0.01). Alveolar inflammation level was decreased obviously in the hydrocortisone group (P<0.05) after 7- and 28-day treatment as compared with the model group, and that in Herba Ephedra Sinicae plus Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group was also decreased obviously (P<0.05) at 28 d. Compared with the sham operation group, nuclear density of the model group was increased, while its inner diameter was decreased (P<0.05). In the Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group, Herba Ephedra Sinicae plus Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group and hydrocortisone group, the nuclear density was decreased (P<0.05) as compared with the model group. Inner diameter in the Herba Ephedra Sinicae group, Herba Ephedra Sinicae plus Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group and hydrocortisone group was higher than that in the model group (P<0.05). Microvessel density of the model group was obviously higher than that of the sham operation group (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, Herba Ephedra Sinicae plus Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis group and hydrocortisone group had lower microvessel density (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Herba Ephedra Sinicae combined with Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis can restrain pulmonary artery injury. The nuclear density and microvessel density can be reduced by Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, while Herba Ephedra Sinicae can increase the inner diameter.

Aim: To investigate whether down-regulation of peroxiredoxin 1 (Prx1) and/or peroxiredoxin 5 (Prx5) sensitizes human esophageal cancer cells to ionizing radiation (IR)., Methods: Human esophageal carcinoma cell lines Eca-109 and TE-1 were used. Prx mRNA expression profiles in Eca-109 and TE-1 cells were determined using RT-PCR. Two highly expressed isoforms of Prxs, Prx1 and Prx5, were silenced by RNA interference (RNAi). Following IR, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis were measured using flow cytometry, the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were measured, and the radiosensitizing effect of RNAi was observed. Tumor xenograft model was also used to examine the radiosensitizing effect of RNAi in vivo., Results: Down-regulation of Prx1 and/or Prx5 by RNAi does not alter the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, but made human tumor cells more sensitive to IR-induced apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. When the two isoforms were decreased simultaneously, intracellular ROS and apoptosis significantly increased after IR., Conclusion: Silencing Prx1 and/or Prx5 by RNAi sensitizes human Eca-109 and TE-1 cells to IR, and the intracellular ROS accumulation may contribute to the radiosensitizing effect of the RNAi.

Although genetics is the most significant known determinant of human intelligence, specific gene contributions remain largely unknown. To accelerate understanding in this area, we have taken a new approach by studying the relationship between quantitative gene expression and intelligence in a cohort of 65 patients with Williams Syndrome (WS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a 1.5 Mb deletion on chromosome 7q11.23. We find that variation in the transcript levels of the brain gene STX1A correlates significantly with intelligence in WS patients measured by principal component analysis (PCA) of standardized WAIS-R subtests, r = 0.40 (Pearson correlation, Bonferroni corrected p-value = 0.007), accounting for 15.6% of the cognitive variation. These results suggest that syntaxin 1A, a neuronal regulator of presynaptic vesicle release, may play a role in WS and be a component of the cellular pathway determining human intelligence.

Down syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, is a common disorder associated with several complex clinical phenotypes. Although several hypotheses have been put forward, it is unclear as to whether particular gene loci on chromosome 21 (HSA21) are sufficient to cause DS and its associated features. Here we present a high-resolution genetic map of DS phenotypes based on an analysis of 30 subjects carrying rare segmental trisomies of various regions of HSA21. By using state-of-the-art genomics technologies we mapped segmental trisomies at exon-level resolution and identified discrete regions of 1.8-16.3 Mb likely to be involved in the development of 8 DS phenotypes, 4 of which are congenital malformations, including acute megakaryocytic leukemia, transient myeloproliferative disorder, Hirschsprung disease, duodenal stenosis, imperforate anus, severe mental retardation, DS-Alzheimer Disease, and DS-specific congenital heart disease (DSCHD). Our DS-phenotypic maps located DSCHD to a <2-Mb interval. Furthermore, the map enabled us to present evidence against the necessary involvement of other loci as well as specific hypotheses that have been put forward in relation to the etiology of DS-i.e., the presence of a single DS consensus region and the sufficiency of DSCR1 and DYRK1A, or APP, in causing several severe DS phenotypes. Our study demonstrates the value of combining advanced genomics with cohorts of rare patients for studying DS, a prototype for the role of copy-number variation in complex disease.

Characteristics of anaerobic granules before and after acclimation, removal efficiencies of 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) and performance of 3-NP wastewater treatment were investigated in a lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB). The results showed that granular sludge acclimatized to 3-NP rapidly during acclimation. Using SEM, the filamentous bacteria was the predominant bacteria on the surface of granules. Throughout the study of 3-NP wastewater anaerobic degradation, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and input COD concentration were kept constant as 26 h and 2 500 mg/L, respectively. While 3-NP concentrations increasing from 20 mg/L to 250 mg/L gradually, COD removal decreased from 95.2% to 85.1% and 3-NP removal efficiencies were always more than 99%. 3-AP was found to be the major intermediate during the degradation of 3-NP. Out of the total input of 3-NP concentration, on molar basis, about 58.7% - 111.9% of 3-NP was recovered in the form of 3-AP. With increasing 3-NP concentration, the variations of gas production were minimal. The minimum methane percentage was 65% and the maximum was 74%.

A membrane bioreactor fed with synthetic ammonium bearing inorganic wastewater was operated under the following conditions: HRT, from 30 h to 7 h; influent NH4+ -N, 500 mg/L; non-discharge of sludge. Formation of extra-cellular polymers (ECP) and their influence on the activity of nitrifiers in the membrane bioreactor was investigated. Over the whole experimental period of 200 d, the activity of nitrifiers in terms of overall ammonium-oxidizing rate decreased from 2.1 kg/(L x d) to 1.5 kg/(L x d), and the nitrifier number using INTF absorbency measurement decreased from 0.023 x 10(-3) to 0.01 x 10(-3), although the MLSS increased from 4500 mg/L to 10500 mg/L. The ECP content increased from the initial 300 mg/L to 600 mg/L. Batch tests using the extracted ECP also indicated that the activity of nitrifiers could be inhibited by the existence of ECP.

The biological removal of methanol from condensate of ammonia manufacturing processes for the purpose of reclamation using contact type reactor was studied. Methanol of 60 mg/L was removed completely under an HRT of 1.12 h. Optimal inorganic nutrient dose was determined on evaluating methanol removal performance and dehydrogenase activities (DHA) under different nutrition doses. The optimal inorganic nutrient dose only gave an increase of conductivity of ca. 10 micros/cm2 in the effluent on treating synthetic condensate containing methanol of 30 mg/L. The results demonstrated that biological removal of methanol was effective for the purpose of recovering the methanol-bearing condensate.

A sensitive analytical method has been developed for identification of ubiquinones (UQ-n(Hx)) and menaquinones (MK-n(Hx)) in activated sludge by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry in negative mode (LC-NI-APCI-MS). Extraction and clean-up of samples were carried out on Sep-Pak Plus Silica solid-phase extraction cartridges. Complete separation of quinones was achieved with an ODS analytical column and using isopropyl ether-methanol (17:83, v/v) as the mobile phase. The compositions of ubiquinones and menaquinones were determined directly using combined information on retention time, the molecular ion mass and fragment ion masses. The lowest instrument quantitative detection limits (LODinst) for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1 were estimated to be 0.4, 4 and 0.12 ng (S/N = 10) using LC-NI-APCI-MS in SIM mode, and the lowest method detection limits (LODmeth) achieved by spiking experiment were estimated to be 0.2, 2 and 0.06 microg/g for UQ-6, UQ-10 and Vitamin K1, respectively. On the other hand, the LODinst for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1 were estimated to be 10, 100 and 2 ng (S/N = 10) using LC-NI-APCI-MS in full-scan mode, and the LODmeth were estimated to be 7, 60 and 1.2 microg/g for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1, respectively. Both LC-NI-APCI-MS and LC-UV/DAD were applied in the analysis of an activated sludge extract. UQ-n (n = 6-10), MK-n (n = 6-10), MK-n(H2) (n = 7-10), MK-n(H4) (n = 8-9) and MK-8(H6) were detected by LC-NI-APCI-MS, while UQ-6, UQ-7, MK-7(H), MK-9 and MK-10(H2) were not found by LC-UV/DAD. These results suggest that LC-NI-APCI-MS is more sensitive than LC-UV/DAD for the analysis of quinones in environmental samples such as sediment, activated sludge and bio-film in biological processes and other aquatic environments.
